Aliyah Boston was sensational, Caitlin Clark was drastically better in Game 2 than she was in Game 3, NaLyssa Smith got benched for Temi Fagbenle, Kelsey Mitchell had her moments and Lexie Hull competed hard on both ends of the floor. The Sun's defense was too much for the Fever, and their experience/late game shot making abilities are what lifted them in this one. Detroit Tigers 3 – 10 Innings Chicago Cubs 7, New York Yankees 4 St. Louis Cardinals 4, Chicago White Sox 3 – 10 Innings Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3 – F/10 – Jansen, Lukes lead Blue Jays to dramatic win over Tigers Nathan Lukes’ RBI double in the 10th inning helped the Toronto Blue Jays finish off a 4-3 comeback victory over the Detroit Tigers. The Blue Jays trailed 3-1 with two out in the ninth, but Matt Chapman walked and Danny Jansen hit his 11th homer over the Toronto bullpen in left-centerfield. The home run came off Tigers closer Alex Lange, who finished Detroit’s combined no-hitter with a perfect ninth inning on Saturday. Daulton Varsho started the 10th with a grounder to second and Zack Short threw out extra runner Alejandro Kirk at third, but Lukes followed with an RBI double off José Cisnero (2-2). Cubs 7, Yankees 4 – Cubs score 6 runs late to rally for 7-4 win over Yankees Yan Gomes hit a tying pinch-hit two-run single in the seventh inning following a fielding error by second baseman Gleyber Torres and Seiya Suzuki hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth and the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 7-4 victory over the New York Yankees. Mike Tauchman opened the eighth with a single off Ron Marinaccio before Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ walked. Suzuki, who homered in the fifth for Chicago’s only hit off Domingo Germán, followed with a sacrifice fly off Clay Holmes and Tauchman easily scored when right fielder Giancarlo Stanton’s throw was slightly up the line. Hoerner scored the sixth run when Holmes threw a wild pitch over catcher Kyle Higashioka’s glove to the backstop and Tucker Barnhart added an RBI double in the ninth. Skenes went 12-3 as a pitcher, with 209 strikeouts in 122 innings in helping lead the Tigers to the College World Series championship. The pick was announced by Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., the top pick of the 1987 draft by the Seattle Mariners. For the second time in three years, the Pirates held the top overall selection after selecting catcher Henry Davis at the top of the 2021 draft. Davis made his major league debut last month for Pittsburgh. LSU teammate Dylan Crews went No. 2 to Washington with high school outfielder Max Clark being selected third by Detroit.  Clark was the 2023 High School Player of the Year. NHL – Red Wings trade for Michigan native Alex DeBrincat, send 2 and picks to Senators The Detroit Red Wings acquired Michigan native Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators on Sunday in exchange for two players and draft picks. The Red Wings then signed the 25-year-old DeBrincat, a two-time 41-goal scorer from Farmington Hills, to a four-year extension worth about $7.8 million annually. In exchange for DeBrincat, the Senators acquired forward Dominik Kubalik, defensive prospect Donovan Sebrango, who played in Grand Rapids last season, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and Detroit’s 2024 fourth-round selection.   DeBrincat spent last season with Ottawa, before that he spent five seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks.   Kubalik, who played with DeBrincat in Chicago for three seasons had 20 goals and 25 assists for the Red Wings last year.  The 21-year-old Sebrango, a native of Ottawa, split last season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye. He recorded 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) in 23 games with Toledo and seven points (four goals, three assists) in 39 games with Grand Rapids. Indiana had a chance to win after Teaira McCowan missed two free throws with 16 seconds to play but Lexie Hull’s 3-pointer from the left corner bounced off the rim as time expired. Dream 88, Sky 77 – Rhyne Howard scores 32, Dream beat the Sky 88-77, pulling away in the 4th quarter Rhyne Howard scored 32 points and the Atlanta Dream pulled away in the closing minutes to beat the Chicago Sky for the second time in three days, getting an 88-77 victory on Sunday night.  Up one midway through the fourth quarter the Dream surged ahead by cashing in on three turnovers en route to their fifth straight win. Cheyenne Parker had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Atlanta, which last won five straight games five years ago. Danielle Robinson and Allisha Gray both added 11. Howard had six rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. Kahleah Copper led Chicago (8-11) with 28 points. For his second act in Las Vegas, Wembanyama showed some fire. The No. 1 pick in this year’s draft looked much more like himself in his second game of Summer League on Sunday. He finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, but the Spurs lost 85-80 to the Portland Trail Blazers. NBA – Video shows Spears inadvertently hit herself in the face in encounter with Wemby Police say no charges will be filed following a brief investigation of the altercation involving pop star Britney Spears, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama and a member of the player’s security team. Spears said she was struck by a security guard as she tried to approach Wembanyama near a restaurant in a Las Vegas casino complex on Wednesday night. Wembanyama said a person, who he later found out was Spears, grabbed him from behind. Spears filed a police report, alleging battery. But police say surveillance video shows Spears inadvertently hit herself in the face after her hand was pushed off Wembanyama. Tennis – Swiatek reaches the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Djokovic’s match suspended Top-seeded Iga Swiatek saved two match points and came back to beat Belinda Bencic 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. Sunday’s victory extended Swiatek’s unbeaten run to 14 matches. That included a run to her fourth Grand Slam title at the French Open last month. Swiatek has won three championships at Roland Garros and one at the U.S. Open. But she never had been past the fourth round at the All England Club. Swiatek had a 37-match winning streak snapped during a third-round loss at Wimbledon a year ago. Bencic won the singles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Tennis –Azarenka of Belarus booed at Wimbledon after loss to Svitolina of Ukraine Victoria Azarenka says it “wasn’t fair” that she was booed at Wimbledon after her loss to Ukrainian rival Elina Svitolina. Azarenka is from Belarus. She knew that Svitolina does not shake hands with Russian and Belarusian players because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, so she walked directly to the umpire to shake hands. She also seemed to give a slight wave to Svitolina, who won in a third-set tiebreaker. But boos rained down from the crowd at No. 1 Court as Azarenka gathered her equipment. Azarenka said she’s not sure the crowd understood what was happening. She says she was trying to be respectful of Svitolina. NCAAFB – Northwestern will gather more information on football hazing allegations Uncertainty continues to swirl around the Northwestern football program after allegations of hazing led to the suspension of coach Pat Fitzgerald this week. One day after the suspension, The Daily Northwestern published a story that detailed some of the allegations while claiming that Fitzgerald “may have known that hazing took place.” That led university president Michael Schill to write an open letter to the community acknowledging he may have erred in the level of punishment handed down and that he planned to speak to university leaders to determine his next steps. Meanwhile, football practice begins in just a few weeks with the season opener Sept. 3 at Rutgers quickly approaching. Golf – PGA –Straka wins John Deere Classic with final-round 62 despite double bogey Sepp Straka won the John Deere Classic with a final-round 9-under 62 that could have been much better, making double bogey on the final hole but taking the title when Brendon Todd and Alex Smalley were unable to catch him. The 30-year-old Austrian who played in college at Georgia won for the second time on the PGA Tour. He moved to No. 27 in the world and increased his chances of representing Europe in the Ryder Cup this fall in Rome. Straka played the front nine in 7-under 28 and ran off four straight birdies on the back nine to reach 11 under for the day and 23 under for the tournament. His approach found the water on the par-4 18th and he made a 6. Golf – LPGA –Corpuz wins the US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach for her first LPGA title Allisen Corpuz picked the right time and the right place for her first big win. She won the first U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach, shooting a final-round 69 for a three-shot victory. The 25-year-old from Hawaii is the first American in 20 years to make the U.S. Women’s Open her first LPGA win. And she made it look easy. Corpuz was the only player to break par all four days at Pebble Beach. And she kept her emotions in check the whole way until wiping away tears on the 18th green. Charley Hull and Jiyai Shin finished second. Soccer – US beats Canada 3-2 on PK’s after 2-2 tie to reach CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal Matt Turner stopped two penalty kicks, and the United States beat Canada 3-2 in a shootout after a 2-2 draw for a berth in a CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal against Panama. In a game scoreless until the 88th minute, the U.S. tied the score on Scott Kennedy’s 115th minute own goal, six minutes after Jacob Shaffelburg put Canada ahead. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Texas Rangers 10, Detroit Tigers 6 Chicago White Sox 7, Los Angeles Angels 3 Chicago Cubs 2, Tampa Bay Rays 1 Rangers 10, Tigers 6 – Grant Anderson wins in relief in MLB debut, Rangers beat Tigers 10-6 Reliever Grant Anderson won in an overpowering major league debut and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 10-6 on Tuesday night to improve to 35-19, the best record in franchise history at the one-third mark. Anderson stuck out seven of the nine batters he faced after taking over for starter Martín Pérez in the fifth inning. Texas second baseman Marcus Semien extended his hitting streak to a career-best 19 games with a fifth-inning single. Jonah Heim drove in four runs, Josh Jung homered and had three runs and Aroldis Garcia had four hits and three runs. Miguel Cabrera had three hits and drove in two runs for Detroit. Cabrera passed Ken Griffey Jr. for 15th place with 5,272 total bases. White Sox 7, Angels 3 – Vaughn drives in 3, González homers to help White Sox beat Angels 7-3 Andrew Vaughn drove in three runs, Romy González homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3. The White Sox looked as if they were headed toward their fourth straight loss after Los Angeles raced out to a 3-1 lead against Lucas Giolito. But the White Sox turned it around in a big way, scoring five in the fourth against Tyler Anderson. Vaughn smacked a three-run double to put Chicago on top. González drove him in with a double, stole third and scored when Urshela allowed catcher Chad Wallach’s throw to wind up in left field, stretching Chicago’s lead to 6-3. González made it a four-run game with a solo homer in the sixth against Chase Silseth. Taylor Ward and Shohei Ohtani homered for Los Angeles. Cubs 2, Rays 1 – Hoerner homers, bullpen shines as Cubs beat McClanahan, Rays 2-1 Nico Hoerner homered and the Chicago Cubs made the most of a rare gaffe by Tampa Bay, handing Shane McClanahan his first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Rays. The game was tied at 1 when Ian Happ led off the sixth with a shallow fly ball that dropped between Tampa Bay second baseman Brandon Lowe and right fielder Josh Lowe in a miscommunication between the fielders. After Seiya Suzuki struck out and Trey Mancini bounced to second, Mike Tauchman hit a tiebreaking RBI single into left field. That was enough for Chicago, which topped the majors’ best team for the second straight day after entering the series with a four-game losing streak. Hours after starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez went on the 15-day disabled list with a ruptured pulley in his left index finger, centerfielder Riley Greene came out of the game in the third inning. Greene is hitting .294 in his second season and leads the team with 60 hits and 29 runs. Rodriguez is 4-4 in 11 starts with a 2.13 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings. NHL – Cup Finals between Vegas and Florida will end with a first-time NHL champion Stanley isn’t just getting a tan. He’s getting a new home. The Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers pits teams against each other who have never won the NHL championship. It’s the first time that has happened since 2018 when Vegas made it in its inaugural season before losing to Washington. While ratings aren’t expected to be stellar, the series is a chance to for the league to show off its expansion beyond traditional hockey hotbeds. Game 1 is Saturday in Las Vegas. NBA – The NBA Finals are set: It’s the Heat and the Nuggets for the Larry O’Brien Trophy Cancel that flight plan, Denver. Turns out, the NBA Finals are starting in the Mile High City after all. And Jimmy Butler was proven right. Finally, we have a title-series matchup: The Miami Heat, champions of the Eastern Conference even after getting in as only the No. 8 seed, will take on the Western Conference champion Nuggets in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The series starts in Denver on Thursday night. The Heat got there by winning Game 7 of the East title series in Boston on Monday night. It came one year to the day after the Celtics won a Game 7 on Miami’s floor to win the East title a year ago. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Atlanta Dream 83, Chicago Sky 65 Connecticut Sun 81, Indiana Fever 78 Dream 83, Sky 65 – Howard scores 20, Dream cruise past Sky 83-65 Rhyne Howard scored 20 points, Allisha Gray and rookie Haley Jones each added 13 points and the Atlanta Dream eased past the Chicago Sky 83-65. Cheyenne Parker had 10 points and eight rebounds for Atlanta (2-2). The Dream made 18 of 24 free throws compared to 9 of 11 makes for the Sky. The Dream led 40-25 at halftime after Chicago shot just 28% and turned it over eight times. The Sky finished the game 25 for 77 (33%) with 15 turnovers. Dana Evans scored 11 points to lead Chicago (3-2). Kahleah Copper, Marina Mabrey and Kristine Anigwe each added 10. Sun 81, Fever 78 – Jones gets key block, Connecticut holds off Fever 81-78 Tiffany Hayes scored 22 points, Brionna Jones had 19 points and 11 rebounds and the Connecticut Sun held off the Indiana Fever 81-78. Rookie Aliyah Boston made her first career 3-pointer to pull Indiana within 79-76 with 48.1 seconds left. After a timeout, DeWanna Bonner missed a contested layup and Indiana raced the other way, but Jones blocked a shot at the rim. Indiana retained possession and Boston made a putback to make it 79-78. Hayes was fouled with 9.4 seconds left and made two free throws for a three-point lead. Indiana found Lexie Hull open in the corner for a potential tying shot but her 3-pointer came up short. Alyssa Thomas added 13 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists and Natisha Hiedeman scored 11 for Connecticut. NCAAMBB – North Carolina transfer Caleb Love commits to Arizona Caleb Love is now headed to Arizona. The North Carolina transfer tweeted that he will play next season with the Wildcats, less than a month after decommitting from Michigan. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 14.6 points and 3.3 assists in three seasons at North Carolina. He averaged 17.6 points in seven NCAA Tournament games, helping lead the Tar Heels to the 2022 national championship game. Love entered the transfer portal after leading North Carolina with 73 3-pointers as a junior and initially committed to Michigan. He decommitted from the Wolverines earlier this month, reportedly due to an admissions issue involving academic credits. NCAABB – Kentucky to house teams in dorms for regional due to hotel room shortage A shortage of hotel rooms in the Lexington area this weekend will require visiting baseball teams in the NCAA Tournament’s Lexington Regional to stay in dormitories on the Kentucky campus or in hotels more than 30 miles away. Kentucky is the No. 12 seed for the 64-team tournament and earned the right to host Ball State, Indiana and West Virginia for double-elimination play Friday through Monday. Several previously scheduled events in the Lexington area created a room shortage. Ball State and West Virginia spokesmen said their teams and staff would stay in the dorms.
