Jason Rosenblatt joins me on episode 47.A native of Canada but now resident in Israel, Jason is best known for his band Shtreiml, playing a mixture of Klezmer (Jewish) and Eastern European music with great use of the harmonica. His first instrument was piano before he went on to pick up the harmonica after hearing Sonny Terry and Paul Butterfield. He then took advantage of the vibrant Montreal blues scene to witness harmonica live. After hearing Howard Levy's seminal ‘New Directions in Harmonica' tutorial video, Jason knew he also wanted to take his own playing down a new path. He proceeded to take lessons with Howard, helping him to expand his sound using the overblow technique. In 2015 Jason released his album Wiseman's Rag, a slightly twisted take on the blues and jazz music that first got him started.Links:Jason's website: https://jasonrosenblatt.com/homeShtreiml band:http://www.shtreiml.com/shtreiml.phpJerusalem Harmonica Festival:https://www.facebook.com/harmony.culturalcenter/photos/a.259961650825736/2058544157634134/Joe Spiers custom harmonicas: https://spiersharmonicas.comVideos:Grand Theft Stutinki - Shtreiml CD Launch:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG9PUugB-Zs&list=PLyA_Ggl9bnME8h4rLSjdK86aK4CVzWcUpHarmonica Jazz - Paper Moon:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LyUd3gSswU&list=PL0F121BC77E9267C7Teaching: using overblows in blues context:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsfh4QF7XrYTeaching: Salt Creek:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQmoDjp32qcAlso check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains many of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQ

The Darin Olien Show

There’s a lot of pain in the world. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of frustration. Maybe the reason why nothing is getting solved is because we’re all approaching problems from a childish perspective. Growing as a person isn’t just about healing your present wounds. It’s about healing the child within us, and finally moving on from past pain. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.  If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. From the outside, it seemed like Jason Garner had made it. Jason grew up with a single mom who worked three jobs just to get by. Living in a trailer, having to sell sticks of gum to buy hot lunch at school, he equated happiness with money. Like many of us, he assumed once he had money things would be so much easier. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. In high school, Jason got his first real job working at a flea market. Being able to make twice the minimum wage and overtime meant big paychecks for a teen. He worked his way up to the beer tent, where he was tasked with recruiting local bands to bring in more customers. This organic experience gave birth to a lucrative career as a concert promoter. In 2009, Jason found himself successful, rich and the CEO of an international music company. Then the death of his beloved mother sent him into a tailspin. He began to realize that the life he created was based on a lie. Money wasn’t filling the void inside.  So he decided to completely change his life. But waking up not knowing who he was anymore was terrifying. So after some listless wandering, he found a spiritual teacher and began to meditate. That’s when the healing began. In this incredibly heartfelt conversation, Jason and I get into the hard reality that we all have a lost child inside of us calling the shots. It’s only when we explore that pain and figure out how to heal that we can start guiding our life with intention. Jason tells me why he decided to write his book And I Breathed, and how it’s facilitated his journey. This is a conversation everyone can benefit from. And it definitely parallels the woes of the world right now.  Other insightful tidbits in this episode: Jason’s story of growing up in poverty Why he equated pain with not having enough money From flea market worker to the man in charge How every argument you have with an adult is actually with a child How Jason ended up on his therapist’s floor The power of meditation Why a broken heart is a perfect place to start your transformation Why you should always ask questions in the heat of the moment Links: Jason’s Website Get in touch with Jason ...And I Breathed - The Book Jason on LinkedIn Jason on Twitter Jason on Instagram Netflix' Down To Earth' Official Trailer Download Darin's amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code "DARIN" The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. If you’re looking to give a voice to your brand, and make sure that it’s heard by the right people, head to www.mustamplify.com/darin to see what Amplify can do for you.

Episode Notes Jason Fitzgerald is a runner who has seen huge changes with strength training and helped many achieve results through his coaching and training. He's been running the strengthrunning.com website since 2010 where there are tons of resources. He found strength training helped him recover from a serious ITB injury and he's studied it in depth and put it into practice. He knows all about strength and conditioning for runners. We chat about why you would want to incorporate strength training - it will give you performance improvements but it will also make you more resilient with fewer injuries. We also talk in detail about some of the myths around strength training (and you’ll get plenty out of the chat even if running is not your bag). Strength training is an option for everyone: men and women. Strength training has definitely been one of the biggest changes I’ve made in my physical activity over the past few months. There's great evidence strength training is one of the single best ways to reduce the risk of injury. And some of the benefits and underlying gains are not just about being stronger: it can help you run more economically, improve coordination, and you'll get wider health benefits as well. You don't have to life weights either: you might do a bodyweight strength routine a couple of times per week and that will be tremendously beneficial. And, as we discuss in the podcast you are not going to build big muscles and bulk up with the compound, multi-muscle movements runners will be doing. This is one interview you're going to want to listen to because there are many takeaways for us all, whether you're on Wall Street or making good money or trying to be successful in whatever enterprise you choose. Jason upholds the definition of consistency, of slow and steady, and of working smarter (not necessarily harder) as an approach to business. We're so excited to share this interview with you and hope you will take a little extra time to check out Jason's websites. In This Episode Welcome, Jason! The 2-track approach Great mentorship yielded a successful slow and steady mindset Investment: Thou shalt maintain control Some excellent advice Wall Street You know what they say... When you mess with the bull, you get the horns. I took this picture of the famous Wall Street Bull on my first trip to New York last year. When my small, Northeast Minneapolis company was acquired by an international company, my eyes were opened to a whole new world of business. Wall Street is no joke. New York City itself is no joke, at that. Our office in New York is a handful of blocks north of Wall Street, but well within smelling-distance, and close enough to see just how serious people are about trying to make it in the big world. While it's not necessarily my scene, I do see the attraction to a life spent at that pace. I could never keep up with what would be required to live and work in New York, but it is stimulating to me in small doses. It's kind of a wake up call to the normal and steady pace that I like to enjoy. But my goals have never been around making money, they've been in trying to go places where I'm most effective, where I'm needed, and where I can make a difference. Honestly, if Wall Street is your game, or if you want it to be your game, there is no judgment from us. But there are, inevitably, certain requirements, certain sacrifices, that will need to be made when playing that game. In a world obsessed with money and making it to the big time, Wall Street is just another cog in that machine. Whether it's the sacrifice of time, or something a bit more costly, there are prices to pay for playing on that scale. But what if there was another way? A better way? A way that we could work with people and create a mutually-beneficial situation which enhanced the culture and the lives of everyone you touch! A dream, you say? I don't know. My belief has always been that the most effective gestures [can be] made at the 1:1 level, when goods and services are exchanged on a personal level. (Of course, with any sort of customer-facing services, we also run the risk of making very ineffective or detrimental gestures.) Like Jason, I am all for capitalism, but I have a huge heart for small business. Because when you're known by someone, it makes a difference. Doesn't it? Jason's advice to us about investment (Commandment #3) is "thou shalt maintain control". As much as he means this about investing our hard-earned money, I don't see any reason it should stop there. Monday's episode was about being responsible and finding solutions that create mutually beneficial outcomes for everyone whom policies affect, and that applies as much to the investment of our time and energy (involvement in business) as it does to the government "investing" in our lives. When we start putting everything on auto-pilot, when we give more fuel to the bulls, we have fewer opportunities to wield the most important tool of business we have: the personal touch. I don't believe humans are inherently good, but I believe humans are capable of great good. Even more importantly, I believe that when we practice goodness we see inexplicable, wonderful outcomes that motivate us, and others, to do more good. The truth is, New York is a crowded place... and the Earth we live on is quite large. Don't stop looking for what your niche is; pursue it and bring your unique skill set to an area of this world that needs it most. The movie-quoting, wrestling-calling, classic humor loving Jason Bryant joins The Real Brian this week to talk about how his passion and commitment to investing in his inner nerd led him to the 2016 Olympics in Rio. In This Episode Movie quotes are just so dang quotable! Turning everything into politics makes us too uptight. Jason's fun, personal fact has to do with his daughters... The saturated book market and listening at 2x speed. What is Jason's super power? Getting geeky for stats. How the opportunity for 2016 Rio came up. Announcing at the 2016 Olympics Today I released an episode for Golden Spiral Media's Stuff I Learned Yesterday podcast about the idiom "pie in the sky". Jason's description of the journey that led him to being an announcer at the 2016 Olympics in Rio struck me as one of those things we think of being wonderful to contemplate while, at the same time, having it in the back of our minds that it is never going to happen. And that is basically what the idiom means: nice to think about, but unlikely to be realized. My purpose in discussing the idiom on Stuff I Learned Yesterday is to draw out the fact that by using idioms like pie in the sky in order to express our feelings about something, we limit ourselves from going after what we truly want. Here at The Real Brian Show, we're all about going after what you want in spite of the odds. If your vocabulary is riddled with negative words, stop and take a hard look at your situation! What is it you really want? What obstacles stand in your way of obtaining it? How can those obstacles be broken down so that this "nice to think about" achievement can become a reality? Whatever your inner nerd is going crazy over, don't be afraid to see where that passion may lead. In this episode of The Real Brian Show, we make it very clear that we won't discriminate one what anyone can nerd out about. Jason is all about wrestling and goes to great lengths to hone his craft. Recently he's developed a database where he can store stats and query it for information few other announcers have. In doing so, he sets himself apart from the crowd while also satisfying a curiosity he has for all things wrestling. Jason's pursuit of his passion and unashamed commitment to nerd out about wrestling has opened the door to some incredible opportunities. Some of the opportunities are unexpected, but Jason never lifts his foot off the accelerator! It's such great fun to hear about his love for wrestling, the confidence it provides him, and how finding this niche gives him total freedom to embrace his inner nerd. Did You Know? In April of 2016, Jason was presented with the Ed Aliverti Golden Microphone Award. The award is "given annually to honor a public address announcer who has excelled in the craft and made a major positive impact on the wrestling community."
