Something awesome happened near the Embarcadero.   In Season 4 of this show, back in 2022, we featured SF born-and-raised vegan donut maker Vandor Hill. His pop-up (at the time), Whack Donuts, was gaining some new fans and new spots for him to sell his delicious sweet treats.   But now ..   Now Whack Donuts occupies a corner spot of EMB 4, just across the walkway from Osha Thai and near the padel courts and water fountain of recently renamed Embarcadero Plaza. How did this happen?   Well, Vandor got himself into two city programs: Vacant to Vibrant and Ujamaa Kitchen. And it was his acceptance to Vacant to Vibrant that helped him to get and keep his nook in EMB 4.   Vandor and I hung out one day in January to catch up on life since April 2022. This bonus episode comprises our conversation that day.   Whack Donuts is open 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., Tues.-Sat. Vandor often does special drops and monthly flavors. But if you're looking for sweetness for your sweetie (or yourself, let's be real), he'll have a red velvet cake vegan donut for Valentine's as well as a special "Love in a Box" 3-pack or half-dozen.   Follow Whack Donuts on Instagram.   Photography by Jeff Hunt   We recorded this podcast at Whack Donuts in the Embarcadero in January 2024.

I Found Moff Gideon's Location in The Mandalorian (Season 2)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2023 13:33

In the mandalorian season 2 episode 7 we went to morak to learn the location of moff Gideon's ship. In doing so, we saw this quick one second image on screen of where he is in the galaxy. I spent the last several hours trying to figure out where exactly this could be and I've narrowed it down to all possible places that he could be heading according to each direction the triangle could be pointing and how it fits in with canon and legends to maybe give us an idea of where he's going and where the season finale could end. Narshadda was the moon revolving around Nal hutta basically coruscant's underworld full of crime and violence, except the entire planet, added to that it was filled with smog and trash. It was the top spot for the Hutt's to do their business. During 10 ABY, which is exactly the time we are in, during legends, Leia and Han Solo were on this planet and ran into a lot of trouble. This is also the planet where Leia gets her ancient lightsaber from an old survivor of Order 66, vima da boda. On the planet, Boba Fett is also waiting for Solo as he hunts him down. I think if Moff Gideon is going here, we could see Leia and Han again, and Boba will maybe stop his mission with Mando to seize Solo. I could see Gideon having a base here for the child to extract his blood and transfuse it with the host or hosts that he may have. The end of the season could end with a clone body of some new species powerful in the force waking up, or, it could be a clone of someone we know, like Darth maul, Luke, Anakin, or a young palpatine, perhaps. Let's say it's not nar shadda, then he could be going downwards towards Daalang. The Now if he goes to Daalang, it would land him on a hyperspace route to Kamino. This, of course, is the hub for cloning and where the clones were created. This would make the most sense as we know there's a huge cloning project going on with the season revolving around harvesting the child's blood rich in a high midichlorian count, or in other words, high force energy count. Who knows what memories returning to the cloning facility will spike for Boba. Maybe we'll see the old kaminoans once again. Now in the plagueis novel, the kaminoans were trying to clone other beings, some with shovels for hands for digging and mining. They were experimenting with abominations, however they realized human clones were much easier and straight forward to create. In the vats we saw in the Mando episode 4, one looked like a zabrak in the concept art, and another like a twi-lek, could that be talon, perhaps? George Lucas, allegedly, wanted to make the sequels to have maul train a young apprentice named Darth talon, with Luke gathering students and survivors from order 66. Could this show take us through that journey until the sequels? Now further down, we see another planet and this could be Vandor, which in legends is another imperial outpost where they captured Lando and the Falcon. I don't see the significance of this place, but not every place has to be a place of old or to remind us of nostalgia. It can be a new world, which is cool too. If he's not headed to those locations, then he's going to what I think is Hapes near Onderron. Hapes was an inner rim planet They manufactured starship components. This is where Dr. Aphra, the archaeologist hired by Vader after episode 4, got some of the parts necessary for her ship, the ark angel. Elsbeth has a connection to ships built an industry that helped build the imperial starfleet. All locations point towards seeing some characters from the original or prequel trilogy, so I think going to Nar Shadda is probably the most likely, and if not, then Kamino. I feel like the remnants of the Empire can do what they want more freely on such a crime infested world without laws like Nar Shadda. Also seeing Han Solo and Boba together will surely make the mission go sideways, that is, if they want to stick with legends and if this is at that exact moment in time. In this podcast, Vandor picks up where he left off in Part 1. He traces his family history back to his grandfather, who moved from Mobile, Alabama, to San Francisco around the time of the Second Migration and met his wife (Vandor's grandma) here in The City. She was born and raised here; he was a quiet, strong man who learned how to dress from his new wife. When he was two, Vandor's dad left the family. But he was surrounded by relatives and loved ones, most of them living in the same Victorian in Lower Pac Heights, on the lip of the Fillmore. Because his mom was young when she had Vandor, her own parents took over raising the boy. Family gatherings in the house were common, and there was always a lot to eat. Vandor talks about those meals as well as some of the neighborhood spots they'd get their produce and meat from. They're places that aren't around anymore, but the owners were often friends of the family. We turn to Vandor's teen years. He got into art, graffiti, and break-dancing in those days. He describes the contrast once he transferred from a private high school to Galileo, for him both socially and academically. In his junior year, his sister was born, his parents were fighting, and he relocated to the East Bay because his mom and his grandma were on bad terms. He began to struggle in his schoolwork. He was working at the Exploratorium. The next year, his senior year in high school, he was told he was one credit short of what was needed to graduate. He had befriended a photographer who also worked at the Exploratorium. They were set to attend and work at an event together, but Vandor got lost and missed it. It didn't matter, though. His friend had committed suicide. Shortly after that, the family found out they were losing their house in Pac Heights over a family quarrel. Despite all this, Vandor graduated high school. We end this episode with Vandor's thoughts on what it means to still be here in San Francisco. Follow Whack Donuts on Instagram. There's a dude in the Mission who makes vegan donuts and break-dances. In this episode, we meet Vandor Hill. Vandor was born and raised in The City. He recently turned 40. He shares the story of how he came to love baking. It starts in the predominantly female house he grew up in. Surrounded by his grandma and aunt, Vandor says a lot of his baking went uncredited. No one believed that he was the one who made whatever delicious treat they were eating. Peach cobbler soon became his signature bake. Vandor shares the story of why his company is called Whack Donuts. It involves a group of young kids getting jumped in the Mission and the quiet one (Vandor) basically fending off the attackers. His buddies called him "Whacko" from that point on. As part of the story of starting his donut business, Vandor takes us back to a tough period in his life. Between 2017 and 2019, he lost his grandmother, his mom, his aunt, a mentor, and a friend. His dancing suffered. His work wasn't willing to adjust or allow him space to grieve. His living situation deteriorated. And then, the pandemic hit. We get into the early days of Whack Donuts and talk about why Vandor decided to make his product without any dairy. The story goes back to an internship he had in high school at a local donut shop. Eventually, enough people asked if the donuts were vegan, which inspired Vandor to bake his treats rather than fry them. Check back Thursday for Part 2, when Vandor shares stories about his family and his early days. We recorded this podcast at Abanico Coffee Roasters in the Mission in April 2022. On the January 12, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film editor Brad Oman and Star Wars expert Bryan Young to have a spoiler-filled discussion about The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 3 “The Streets of Mos Espa”. In The Spoiler Room: The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 3 “The Streets of Mos Espa” FeedbackMatthew F wrote in: Last episode the question was asked why it took so long for Hutts to get involved again with Tatooine after the death of Jabba. In the Star Wars comics there has recently been a crossover event called "War of the Bounty Hunters". This takes place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and in this story, Darth Vader kills all of the Grand Hutt Council except for Jaba. … I imagine it took some time for the Hutt family to sort itself out from this huge power vacuum and that there was likely some jockeying for position among the Hutts. Perhaps, Bib Fortuna was working for the Twins or wasn't working with the Hutts but considered too low priority compared to getting other things sorted out. Matt also speculated that something bad would happen to the tuskens in this weeks episode and boy was he right but also that he thinks the “Tuskens will be eventually seen in the "present day" part of the episode. To use a Dune reference, I think the Tuskens will be Boba's "desert power".” James h writes in to point out that Before they changed the setting of the train heist in Solo: a Star Wars story to Vandor, it took place in some kind of desert and the concept art in the art of book looks almost exactly like what we saw in last weeks episode.

We’re still in the world of Solo: A Star Wars Story--this time thanks to Jason Fry’s companion journal, Tales From Vandor, which recounts a series of stories and facts from Midnight, the keeper of the Fort Ypso Lodge. We discuss the books fun layout, new character insights gleaned from the book, and the heaping helping of in-universe references, both new canon and Legends, and how it expands the myth-making and storytelling surrounding Han Solo. Plus, we discuss more Resistance news and meeting Star Wars authors! All that and Josh tries to contain his excitement around a Legends character being made canon on this week’s H1R!
