Replace ego with the eternal. Trade selfishness for service—and self-absorption for unity. Together, let’s explore the spark of divinity that resides within us all.Meet Raghunath Cappo.Punk rock icon. Spiritual warrior. Bhakti yoga devotee.A teen in search of meaning, Ray Cappo fled his suburban Connecticut enclave for New York City—and found community among the misfits of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He fell in love with punk rock, so he started a band and a record label. Success soon followed. By the late 1980’s, Youth of Today had thousands of fans, cementing Ray as a leading voice and trendsetter at the bullseye of hardcore culture. However, a growing existential itch led Ray to call it quits. At just 22, he walked away from his band and label and decamped for India—a spiritual pilgrimage that led him to the holy village of Vrindavan. It was there that Ray fell in love with the wisdom and traditions of Bhakti yoga.It was there that he would remain for the next six years, living as a monk.It was there that Ray became Raghunath. This is the incredible story of a modern day yogi. But it’s also about the search we all go on. The journey for personal meaning beyond the ego. And the quest for universal consequence beyond the material. It’s about the timeless that lives and breathes within all of us—that which is eternal, and past our limited senses. It’s about transcending the illusions that hold us back. What it means to truly devote oneself to greater truth. And the modern day challenges of trudging the path towards higher consciousness. All told, it’s about what it really means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. If you’ve enjoyed my conversations with musicians John Joseph & Toby Morse, spiritual leaders Guru Singh & Radhanath Swami, or modern seekers Andy Puddicombe, Jason Garner & Russell Brand, then I’m confident this will be your jam.To read more click here. Today's Guest is Jason Garner, who I connected with immediately because of his authenticity, insight, and passion about the state of the world. Lots of people have been calling on Jason for guidance, and you will see why in this interview. Jason is a husband and father, he spent the first 37 years of his life working his way up from flea market parking attendant to former executive CEO of Global Music at Live Nation —never taking a breath in the belief that to be loved he had to be the best. He has worked with rock stars and sports legends and was twice named to Fortune magazine's list of the top 20 highest-paid executives under 40. A series of events centering on the sudden death of his mother from cancer caused him to re-evaluate what really mattered in life…and to finally breathe. He has spent thousands of hours sitting cross-legged at the feet of timeless Masters of mind, body and spirit including learning from the monks at the Shaolin Temple in China.  What you'll learn in this episode: The special powers of the musical artist to sense the collectiveHow the death of his mother changed his life trajectoryHow and why he achieved his business success early in lifeA special story about Enrique Iglesias Quotes "Most of us will not wake up without being shaken up" - Jason Garner "It's time to write when something punches me in the heart and I know I have to share it" - Jason Garner "I was at the Shaolin Temple and couldn't figure out how I got there"- Jason Garner "I wish that somewhere along the line someone had told me that 'You're making a human'. Because that's much different than 'making my kid'. There's selfishness in 'making my kid' and there's a service in 'making a human." - Jason Garner "It's okay to miss the little version of [your children], while also being supportive and proud of what they are growing in to." - Jason Garner "If everyday we focus on moving the ball down the field into some degree, you wake up at the end of the year pretty proud of what you accomplished." - Jason Garner "I have scored a lot of points; I don't think of hitting homeruns very much because the striking-out in the real world is a very painful and costly experience" - Jason Garner "Life just keeps pulling the rag from underneath you." - Jason Garner "The miracle is not walking on water. It's walking on the earth." - Jason Garner "Artists are really attuned. And they are also very attuned to pain because what is being expressed through art is a way of asking 'Do you love me now?'" - Jason Garner "Some people say 'We're on the same boat', that's not true. Not knowing our unique purpose and not realizing what we want to achieve in life may not be very comforting and may often lead us more into developing fear, anxiety and stress over time. While all of these thoughts bombard our minds constantly pushing us closer to the edge, perhaps all it takes is looking at it from a different angle. With all the struggles we face, we might simply need to change the way we think and introduce a new perspective in order to deal with all the stress and challenges that life throws at us. Valuing ourselves, first and foremost, gives so much of an impact on the way we perceive life in general and how to live it fully. But with this in mind, how exactly do we go about achieving success in all our endeavors? What routines and practices should we implement in our lives that can bring us closer to our personal goals? Today, we are graciously joined by former CEO of global music and concerts, Live Nation Entertainment Inc., Jason Garner. Join us as we deep dive into the conversation around love, purpose and self-worth despite the struggles in every aspect in our lives from grief to trauma and striking a perfect balance to come out on top. There’s a lot of pain in the world. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of frustration. Maybe the reason why nothing is getting solved is because we’re all approaching problems from a childish perspective. Growing as a person isn’t just about healing your present wounds. It’s about healing the child within us, and finally moving on from past pain. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.  If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. From the outside, it seemed like Jason Garner had made it. Jason grew up with a single mom who worked three jobs just to get by. Living in a trailer, having to sell sticks of gum to buy hot lunch at school, he equated happiness with money. Like many of us, he assumed once he had money things would be so much easier. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. In high school, Jason got his first real job working at a flea market. Being able to make twice the minimum wage and overtime meant big paychecks for a teen. He worked his way up to the beer tent, where he was tasked with recruiting local bands to bring in more customers. This organic experience gave birth to a lucrative career as a concert promoter. In 2009, Jason found himself successful, rich and the CEO of an international music company. Then the death of his beloved mother sent him into a tailspin. He began to realize that the life he created was based on a lie. Money wasn’t filling the void inside.  So he decided to completely change his life. But waking up not knowing who he was anymore was terrifying. So after some listless wandering, he found a spiritual teacher and began to meditate. That’s when the healing began. In this incredibly heartfelt conversation, Jason and I get into the hard reality that we all have a lost child inside of us calling the shots. It’s only when we explore that pain and figure out how to heal that we can start guiding our life with intention. Jason tells me why he decided to write his book And I Breathed, and how it’s facilitated his journey. This is a conversation everyone can benefit from. And it definitely parallels the woes of the world right now.  Other insightful tidbits in this episode: Jason’s story of growing up in poverty Why he equated pain with not having enough money From flea market worker to the man in charge How every argument you have with an adult is actually with a child How Jason ended up on his therapist’s floor The power of meditation Why a broken heart is a perfect place to start your transformation Why you should always ask questions in the heat of the moment Links: Jason’s Website Get in touch with Jason ...And I Breathed - The Book Jason on LinkedIn Jason on Twitter Jason on Instagram Netflix' Down To Earth' Official Trailer Download Darin's amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code "DARIN" The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. If you’re looking to give a voice to your brand, and make sure that it’s heard by the right people, head to www.mustamplify.com/darin to see what Amplify can do for you.

We experience our own lives in high definition. The frustration when we're already running late, and we can't find our keys. The moment of irrational hurt when we allow a throwaway comment from a friend to get under our skin. The dissatisfaction of not being where we want to be in life. The taste of that first cup of coffee in the morning. Those sounds and smells that remind us of holidays. This vast patchwork of feelings, emotions, sensations, macro and micro, makes up our lives. Birth and death, television and toothpaste, allergies and habits, sorrow and joy. Such an intricate mesh of details that only we are aware of. Because when we see other people, we see them in low definition. What they say and what they do. We don't see the nuance, the daily battles, the struggles and the confusion, the same things we enjoy and endure day to day, and minute to minute. This makes it easy to judge others, and hard to be compassionate. It makes celebrities the target of cruel attention when they reveal themselves to be only human. And it makes those whose values, politics or ways of life are different to our own, easy enemies. How much more powerful, valuable would it be – before we judge or go to war – to ask ourselves, what must it be like to be this person? Could this give us a way to understand where their pain, their anger and their hatred comes from? Could this gives us a way to find a constructive resolution instead of further conflict and pain? And what if we were to ask ourselves that same question, only this time pointing it in our direction? What must it be like to be us? Could we nurture a sense of awareness with enough objectivity that we might nurture some kind of compassion towards ourselves? To find a constructive solution to our own hurt – even if that is just to learn to let it be – so that we might live a more enriched life, with less suffering, and more acceptance for who we are, where we've been, and where we have the potential to go. This was just one of the topics that we got into when I chatted with Jason Garner, the author of "… And I Breathed: My Journey from a Life of Matter, to a Life that Matters." Jason was formerly the CEO of Global Music and Live Nation, and became one of America's top paid executives. But after seeking therapy following the death of this mother, he realised that his whole life had been fuelled by fear. And this led him to a journey of introspection to find peace and balance in his life. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did. www.jasongarner.com

“Simplicity boils down to two steps: Identify the essential. Eliminate the rest.”Leo Babauta As longtime listeners know well, minimalism, mindfulness & sustainable living are favorite recurring themes of this show. Guests like Andrew Morgan and Joshua Katcher have elucidated our our cultural addiction to fast fashion. Andy Puddicombe,Jason Garner,Light Watkins,Dan Harris,Charlie Knoles,Guru Singh,WuDe and others have espoused the benefits of meditation. And people like Joshua Fields Milburn have shared the strategies and value of learning to live better with less.Perhaps you even watched Joshua and Ryan Nicodemus' documentary, Minimalism*. If you did, you may recall seeing Leo Babauta featured. A husband and father of six, Leo is the creator of Zen Habits, one of the largest single-author blogs in the world with a fanatic global fanbase in the millions. Named one of TIME magazine’s Top 10 blogs, Leo was indisputably one of the first prominent voices on the internet advocating the power and beauty of embracing simplicity and mindfulness to transcend the chaos of our daily existence. Through his writing, he has taught millions how to clear mental, emotional, financial and physical clutter so we can focus on what’s most important, create something amazing, and find contentment, purpose and meaning in our lives. Count me a fan.Today finds Leo with a new goal: to end human struggle.Audacious? Sure. Naively optimistic? Maybe. But Leo is no ordinary human. Uniquely extraordinary, he might just have what it tales to help birth a new age of consciousness.Despite the fact that we had never met in person prior to this podcast, I can't overstate the extent to which Leo's work positively influenced my personal transformation and continues to this day to inspire my path. An authentic example of the powerful ideals he espouses, it was a personal thrill to finally meet him.More importantly, our exchange exceeded all expectations. This is a conversation about how to create healthy, personal boundaries. It's about the distinction between greed and ambition. It's about combating our consumerist programming through meditation, yoga, and mindfulness practices. And it's a conversation about his vegan lifestyle and why he unschools his children. But overall, this is a potent conversation about the path to self-mastery. It's about how to let go of negative habits and adopt positive practices with staying power in service to your highest, most authentic self.Because if you ask Leo, life is for living, not for productivity.Present, gracious and wise beyond measure, Leo is a rare voice worth heeding. And this is a podcast you're going to want to listen to more than once.I sincerely hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“It’s not about finding peace, it’s about being at peace with what we find.”Jason GarnerImagine yourself a top executive at the very apex of the music industry food chain. Your job requires you to travel the world first class and wine and dine the biggest musical acts on the planet like Jay Z, Beyoncé, Coldplay and John Mayer. And you're making so much cash, you've twice been named to Fortune magazine's annual list of the top 20 highest paid executives under 40.Now imagine walking away from it all. Why? Raised by a single mom in a series of unstable living situations, Jason Garner learned early and often how to look after himself. With street-wise hustle and natural salesmanship, he worked hard in school and later even harder in business.Scrapping his way from a weekend job at a flea market to owning his own concert company, by the time he was 37 Jason had become CEO of Global Music at Live Nation Entertainment — the world’s largest concert promotion company and arguably the most important corporate entity in the entire music industry. It can safely be said he made it.Unfortunately, never once did Jason pause to take a breath. Operating on the misplaced belief that in order to be loved, he had to be the best, Jason would have happily pursued his career path all the way to the grave. But then something happened. Something that would change everything. In the wake of his second divorce, the single mom that was Jason's everything contracted stomach cancer. Her sudden death brought his life to a halt and his ego to its knees. Compelled to re-evaluate his life top to bottom, Jason finally asked himself a most important question:what really matters? To answer this, Jason did the unthinkable for someone in his exalted executive position: he quit his job.And for the first time in his life, Jason actually breathed. For the next several years, he immersed himself in the study and practice of health and spirituality. He got to know himself and the inner-workings of his mind. And he met the woman of his dreams.Today he is both student and teacher of all things spiritual, mindful and meditative. A man who has spent literally thousands of hours sitting cross-legged with Masters of body, mind and spirit. A journey to wholeness that has left Jason far happier and more personally fulfilled than he ever was in his envious capacity as a prestigious CEO in perhaps the sexiest business in the world.Jason shares his fantastic voyage to self-love and self-acceptance — from living for matter to living to matter — in his quite compelling memoir … And Then I Breathed: My Journey from a Life of Matter to a Life That Matters*. Plenty of further insights can be found on his thought provoking blog at jasongarner.com.Jason is a beautiful, special soul. His courage, commitment and warmth (he signs all his e-mails with “Big Hugs”) inspires me to do and be better. It was an honor to sit in his vibration and I'm proud to share this conversation. A conversation that traverses the elegant arc of Jason's life with a focus on all things meditation & mindfulness, including:* living for matter vs. living to matter* dogma-free spirituality* spiritual entrepreneurship* radical selfishness* self-help vs. self-love* opting out of the ‘American Dream'* mindfulness in the pursuit of goals See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jason Garner, former CEO of the Global Concert Division for Live Nation, was twice listed on Forbes Highest Paid Executives Under 40 list. Jason has lived at two extremes - as a corporate executive who hung out with Rock stars and managed at least half of the world's live music, then, after his mother died of cancer, he left Live Nation and journeyed the globe to study with healers, philosophers, and spiritual masters who challenged all he held dear. Raised by a single mom, he started working on weekends at a flea market and went to owning his own concert company and then all the way to becoming an executive at a Fortune 500 company. Twice married, twice divorced, raising two children largely on his own, partied with rock stars and sports legends, and made a small fortune until a series of events around the sudden death of his mother brought his life to a halt and his ego to its knees. Through the hard lessons Jason has learned that we can be enlightened from wherever we sit, whether that's an office or an ashram.
