A Pint With Seaniebee is an informal chat with creative folks who have lived, or are living brave, interesting and unconventional lives. We examine how their background and upbringing forged the path they went down; what decisions they took that made all the difference; what ideas they have to change the world in which we live; what life-wisdom they have garnered; and looking back, perhaps what they might change or what advice they might offer up to those following in their footsteps.

David Hayes began his ad career on October 4th 1982 and now runs the media company, Wavemaker in Dublin. One of Seaniebee's oldest pals, he sits down to discuss existentialism: from the future of the creative industries; to his own (following a recent brush with prostate cancer); and, in a table-turning-judo-move, quizzes Seaniebee on how he sees his own life working out going forward. The concept of “Stop Pedaling” and “Optimistic Nihilism” are also discussed. Secondly, there are 3.6m truckers in the US (not 300k as Seaniebee dumbly pronounced). And thirdly, the Wright brothers first flew in 1903 (not “1906 or 1909” as Seaniebee lazily guessed).

Returning to the pod for the fourth time, our resident future-thinker, Richard Watson, arrives in fine fettle to guide us through the global mayhem that confronts us all at every turn these days. Richard is a thoughtful, questioning, truth seeking, self-obsessed, neurotic, contrarian writer that, due to luck more than anything else, has ended up being labelled a futurist (NB: correct term is futurologist). Most days he manages to make a good living telling people that everything will turn out OK despite the fact he's not sure himself sometimes. He enjoys thinking about artificial intelligence and what (if anything) makes us human and especially likes drawing ‘maps' that provoke conversation and debate. When he's not doing all this, he can normally be found gardening, trying to book flights to Greece, drinking wine, arguing with his lawn mower, smoking cigars, or pulling dead mice out of his old sports car (they're cute, but they eat the wiring, especially over winter). Oh yeah, and somehow, he has managed to get five books published and blagged his way into both the Technology Foresight Practice at Imperial College London and the Judge School at Cambridge. Not bad for someone that got a ‘B' in English language O-level and failed maths twice. Go figure. Two of his best books are Digital Vs Human (2017), and Future Files (2007). HOW TO REACT TO ROE V WADE? The Don (aka, the activist Repeal O'Neill) unpacks last week's Supreme Court reversal of Roe V Wade and offers a unique perspective on how activists in the US might respond in kind. The fun continues with a dig down into the wider fragmentation of the US and society in general, and our continued doom-loop into a kind of psychotic tribalism. But never fear, there are some fun things towards the end, including a review of glorious Toulouse, Mick Lynch, Stewart Lee and speculation on when exactly (wo)man(tran) first decided to wipe her/his/their arses. Having come close to reigniting the Balkan conflict with their last pod, The Don & Seaniebee return to pick over the detritus that is the world today and how best one can navigate it. They discuss why world governments appear terrified of driving critical legislation to curb capitalism's global emissions: instead preferring to persist with the usual puffery that all of us have to play a part at a micro level if we are to achieve climate goals. Four sample creative macro solutions are unveiled across aviation, agriculture, telephony and energy that could begin to move the world in the right direction but will likely never be tabled until it's too late (if ever). And, if it is becoming clear that we, a species, are going to collectively fail in our climate endeavours, what are the ethics of hypocrisy surrounding eating as many burgers and flying as often as you like in the meantime? Were the "good old days" pf the 70s and 80s really any better for kids or are we destroying them today with our own narcissistic selfishness, cosseted infantilization, borderline-abusive medicalization, and un-checked digitalization? And is it finally time to just abandon the USA for the utterly broken #shitholecountry it really is, following its latest repugnant response to the latest gun massacre of terrified schoolchildren in Texas? They also talk the sudden preponderance of Doireanns; the low-down on Frankfurt; more bollocks from Ryanair, the airline that wrecks everything; were Scrabble right to ban the “N” word and why our inbuilt penchant for hatred and conflict means it's likely that we'll never fully eradicate such words designed to belittle and demean other races and nationalities. On the occasion of his 82nd birthday, Seoirse (George Boyle) joins the pod with his sidekick Gerald to share their adventure stories down the years. We discuss what it was like growing up in Dublin during the War and how his love for ventriloquism bloomed, as he made his fist dummies from papier-mâché and daub. Seoirse and Gerald represented Ireland and reached the final on The Original Gong Show with Ted Mack, and were the opening act when Ireland's TV station RTE launched in 1961. George dovetailed his ventriloquism with a successful career in engineering and shares his wisdom on the current state of the world and ideas on how we might get back on course. The world is watching and it doesn't like what it is seeing. **************************** The ironic trolling group - The Temple of Satan - have come up with seven rules for living without Religious dogma. (Check out the movie, "Hail Satan") THERE ARE SEVEN FUNDAMENTAL TENETS I. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason. II. The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions. III. One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone. IV. The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own. V. Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs. VI. People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused. VII. Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word. From almost being a professional footballer with Sheffield United and a soldier with the British Marines, Craig tells his amazing story of growing up in the class system, getting away to see the world, rising to become one of the world's great admen, only to see it all eventually unravel before his eyes. We learn a good rule of thumb is to never die on your own doorstep; why the journey is essentially one of finding your true self; and why your life is usually never as bad as your mind might be telling you it is. Craig is a man who has thrown his many regrets into the chasm of the past and really worked hard to come out much stronger and more vital. He approached this chat with a desire to be totally open about his difficult experiences in the hope that his learnings and experience may be helpful to others going through the same thing. Today Craig runs www.smithandko.com with his wife, and this spring they welcomed their first child – Scout Hana – into the world. In the aftermath of the death of John Hume, The Don and Seaniebee attempt to explain the history of the Northern Ireland situation and why he mattered so much to the world. And there is an amazing interview from the archives with the head of one of New York's most violent crime gangs. **************************************** Antonio Fernandez (KING TONE) has a pint with Seaniebee This is an astonishing story of redemption and by far the most controversial and polarizing guest we've had on the show so far. Antonio Fernandez, aka KING TONE, is the former leader of The Latin Kings, the largest Hispanic street gang in the US, with over 50,000 members worldwide. Growing up in a Brooklyn ghetto, he left school at the age of 9 to become a drug dealer and begin a life of violent crime that eventually led to crack addiction and him being incarcerated whilst still in his teens. In Riker's Island he joined The Latin Kings, at the time a primarily prison-based gang that eventually transferred itself out onto the streets of New York, where they quickly became one of the most vicious and feared operations in the city. Antonio recounts how he set out to transform the gang away from crime and into a political movement, fighting for social justice for all Hispanics. A disbelieving NYPD called him ‘a gangster with a PR campaign', and so began a long running feud with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani that ended with King Tone being put away for 13 years. In addition to his extraordinary story, we discuss how Donald Trump might feasibly be leading America towards another civil war, and how it is now time for all marginalized groups to come together and ACT to combat the growing divisiveness across the country. We also discuss the latest from the thought police, cancel culture and identity politics; the death of Big Jack; the arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell; the hot mess that is the Kanye presidential bid and why many Irish Americans are hijacking the old country to promote their inherently racist ideology. ------------------------------------------------------ Kieran McGowan has a Pint With Seaniebee Today's pod is the story of how Ireland emerged from sleepy agricultural backwater, to the modern, first world nation it is today. For over three decades, Kieran McGowan was one of the architects of this transition in his position as head of the IDA – the body responsible for attracting overseas investment and bringing jobs to the country. From humble, working class beginnings, he shares what it was like growing up in Dublin in the fifties and sixties; the corruption and graft that so blighted the seventies and eighties; and the subsequent boom and bust of the “Celtic Tiger.” We discuss lessons learnt (and not!) and what can be done to fix today's Ireland, which appears bereft of creativity and perhaps mired more than ever in procrastination and political inaction across so many important socio-economic issues. Sacred information received from angelic realms (through ayahuasca ceremonies) bestowed upon her gifts of telepathy, clairvoyance, healing, communication with the dead, and space travel through time. She believes mankind has evolved to a robotic state of amnesia, with the earth raising her vibration as a result. Stephen has worked with O&M for 33 years and is currently Business Development Director based in Istanbul. ***************************************************** A Pint With Seaniebee Please subscribe to support the podcast: www.patreon.com/seaniebee Audible Feast list of Best Podcast Series: tinyurl.com/ya5yj9vs 50 Best Podcast Episodes list: tinyurl.com/y7ryajat Release date: January 15th 2020 Runtime: 59m Recorded: Dublin (& London) Release date: January 31st 2020 Runtime: 56m Recorded: Dublin (& Istanbul)

Irish writer and "craictivist", The Don, commences her countdown of her top 20 picks from the 144 episodes of A Pint With Seaniebee over the past four years. (A perfect starting point for those who want to start exploring the series). THE DON: Laura's interview should be listened to by men to gain valuable insight into some of the things that are difficult for women in the workplace; but also female listeners need to ask themselves which career-woman they are: "do you hold the ladder for women coming up behind you, or do you pull it up after you?" ******************************************** Laura Jordan-Bambach has a pint with Seaniebee Former head of The D&AD, and labeled a “Digital female icon” by The Guardian, Laura Jordan-Bambach's legacy is likely to be less about titles and more about her drive to effect change by DOING, rather than just talking about it. Apart from founding Mr President, one of the UK's most progressive advertising agencies, Laura has also spent most of her life fighting for women in the notoriously patriarchal and misogynistic ad industry. In 2007, she helped set up the SheSays mentoring programme (now 40,000 strong and about to launch in Afghanistan), that encourages women to pursue careers in advertising and design. She is also a founder of the "Cannt Festival", a more practical and grounded version of Cannes. We talk Gillette, Petersen, the current state of feminism and ideas on how we might get out of this looming Climate Catastrophe, which current predictions suggest may be upon us by the end of the next decade. The podcast turns 4 years old today and to celebrate, Seaniebee and The Don hack through the search for truth: how hard it is to find these days and how we need to start accepting that none of the ancient texts of the major Abrahamic religions will ever provide us with the answer. As the relevance and plausibility of faith continues to dissipate, perhaps it is time for the world to collectively create “Religion 4.0” – a new belief system predicated around the stored knowledge and realities of being a human in the 21st Century. It's Time for a New Kind of Advertising Agency Dave Dye has just launched a new ad agency in London – Love or Fear – focused on a return to common sense and emotionally big ideas when it comes to selling stuff. Having worked for many of the best agencies in the world, he and his team have set about attempting to answer the million-dollar question: how do you run an agency if you aspire to do really great work? He also shares the results of a fascinating, 6-week experiment he did with the chalkboards outside his local delicatessen, where he endeavoured to apply his thirty years experience to see if he could increase their sales of fine foods and other cheesy comestibles. “They were saying ‘certain stories shouldn't be told'…that was the reason they wanted it to be removed…like a quarter of a million people…there was one festival in the UK, they got so much hate mail, people saying they were going to boycott the festival if they were going to show the film, they ended up dropping it.” Filmmaker Vincent Lambe was the centre of much controversy earlier this year, when his short film – Detainment - was nominated for an Oscar. The movie charts the immediate aftermath of the arrest of two young boys charged with, and subsequently found guilty of, the 1993 murder of a two-year-old toddler named Jamie Bulger in Liverpool. The case was so disturbing it left a nation floundering for answers that never really came, and it remains a raw wound to the degree that a film such as this can cause the visceral backlash it did with many believing it should never have been made, not to mind being accepted into the Oscars. Vincent came under huge criticism for not engaging with Jamie Bulger's mother prior to making the film. The tabloid media eviscerated him and his film (including spreading many mistruths about its content), and more mainstream journalists found themselves gagged by editors when it came to reviews and any attempts to divorce content from hysteria. Detainment is a powerful work that is difficult to watch, and raises many questions about what constitutes responsible film-making around such sensitive subjects. From humble farming beginnings, Roger Burton's career took him from selling antiques and clothes at Leicester Market, to one of the leading voices on the UK fashion scene. He had a huge role in the styling of early MTV videos and movies like Quadrophenia and Hackers, and is also the driving force behind the restoration of The Horse Hospital complex in Central London, where his huge clothes archive is currently housed.
