Clark and Barton sit down to talk swimming, preparation for big meets, how his parents influenced his success, and much more.  More on Clark SmithClark Smith is a 6'9″ freestyle and butterfly specialist and student-athlete at the University of Texas. Born April 17, 1995 in Atlanta, Ga., Smith had the ability to be a great swimmer within his genes – his parents, John and Tori, also swam for Texas and his mother was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team. Smith came within .04 seconds of breaking the National High School record in the 100 butterfly, an event he was on the USA Swimming Junior National Team for. University of Texas2013-2014In his freshman season Smith swam at the Big 12 Championships, placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, fourth in the 200-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly. The 500-yard free was Smith's first event at NCAA's, and he immediately made a statement. Smith qualified for the championship final first coming out of the preliminary heats. In the final, Smith took out the first 200 yards in 1:38.02, a quick 200-yard free time in itself, and he held on until Florida's Dan Wallace took over the lead at the 350-yard mark. But it was Smith's last 50 yards that pulled him away — he out-split Wallace 24.03 to 25.28 to win his first national championship.Smith then took on the 200-yard free — he qualified for the semi-final, and finished 11th overall just 0.41 seconds behind the heat's winer. On the same night Smith led off the 800-yard free relay for Texas that took 8th. For his final individual event of the meet Smith took on the 200-yard fly, an event that was largely expected to be won by Texas. Three Texas athletes qualified for the championship final in the 200-yard fly, including Smith. Texas went 1-2 in the event, but Smith unfortunately was disqualified for a one-hand touch in the championship final of the event.2015-2016At the Big 12 Championships Clark won the 1,650 in a new school and Big 12 record of 14:31.29. He also was a member of the Texas 800 yard freestyle relay that took gold and finished 4th in the 500 yard freestyle. At the NCAA meet, Clark didn't enjoy the same success as his sophomore year. As the defending champion and top seed in the 500 yard freestyle, Clark didn't manage to reach the finals, finishing 21st in the prelims. He was also the top seed in the mile but finished 12th in the prelims.2016 Rio Olympic GamesIn his first Olympic Games, Smith earned a gold medal for his heat swim in the 800 meter freestyle relay. He lead the team off with a 1:47.20 split. Smith, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Ryan Lotche combined in a time of 7:06.74 to put Team USA through to the final in second position.2017 World ChampionshipsOn day one Smith missed out on the 400 meter freestyle final after finishing 12th in 3:47.12. Two days later was back in action in the 800 meter freestyle where he finished 10th in the heats in 7:51.83. In his final swim, Smith won a bronze medal. It came in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay where Smith swam in the heats to put Team USA through to the final in 7th. Blake Pieroni, Townley Haas, Jack Conger and Zane Grothe combined in the final to finish third behind Great Britain and Russia.Check out more info about the Endure Tour coming to Austin, TX on March 29th: https://www.enduretour.comBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Join the Mindset Forge Premium membership for $3 / month (Donor Level) or $150 / month for Coaching: https://themindsetforge.supercast.com

On this episode of Blindsided, we welcome Helen Maroulis. She's the first Olympic gold medalist ever for the U.S. in women's wrestling. After reaching the pinnacle of her career at the 2016 Games in Rio, Helen suffered a concussion. The effects revealed themselves over time and, she says, changed her a lot — mentally and emotionally. But she was determined to heal. Helen talks about struggling with her mental health after her injury … about losing all of her confidence right after she won the gold … and about why she considers her biggest accomplishment to be her return to wrestling. Helen came back to the sport with a new perspective. She earned a second medal this past summer at the Tokyo Olympics. It was a bronze — and without question it's the medal she's most proud of. Here's Helen Maroulis on Blindsided.   *This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. Listener discretion is advised. The movie-quoting, wrestling-calling, classic humor loving Jason Bryant joins The Real Brian this week to talk about how his passion and commitment to investing in his inner nerd led him to the 2016 Olympics in Rio. In This Episode Movie quotes are just so dang quotable! Turning everything into politics makes us too uptight. Jason's fun, personal fact has to do with his daughters... The saturated book market and listening at 2x speed. What is Jason's super power? Getting geeky for stats. How the opportunity for 2016 Rio came up. Announcing at the 2016 Olympics Today I released an episode for Golden Spiral Media's Stuff I Learned Yesterday podcast about the idiom "pie in the sky". Jason's description of the journey that led him to being an announcer at the 2016 Olympics in Rio struck me as one of those things we think of being wonderful to contemplate while, at the same time, having it in the back of our minds that it is never going to happen. And that is basically what the idiom means: nice to think about, but unlikely to be realized. My purpose in discussing the idiom on Stuff I Learned Yesterday is to draw out the fact that by using idioms like pie in the sky in order to express our feelings about something, we limit ourselves from going after what we truly want. Here at The Real Brian Show, we're all about going after what you want in spite of the odds. If your vocabulary is riddled with negative words, stop and take a hard look at your situation! What is it you really want? What obstacles stand in your way of obtaining it? How can those obstacles be broken down so that this "nice to think about" achievement can become a reality? Whatever your inner nerd is going crazy over, don't be afraid to see where that passion may lead. In this episode of The Real Brian Show, we make it very clear that we won't discriminate one what anyone can nerd out about. Jason is all about wrestling and goes to great lengths to hone his craft. Recently he's developed a database where he can store stats and query it for information few other announcers have. In doing so, he sets himself apart from the crowd while also satisfying a curiosity he has for all things wrestling. Jason's pursuit of his passion and unashamed commitment to nerd out about wrestling has opened the door to some incredible opportunities. Some of the opportunities are unexpected, but Jason never lifts his foot off the accelerator! It's such great fun to hear about his love for wrestling, the confidence it provides him, and how finding this niche gives him total freedom to embrace his inner nerd. Did You Know? In April of 2016, Jason was presented with the Ed Aliverti Golden Microphone Award. The award is "given annually to honor a public address announcer who has excelled in the craft and made a major positive impact on the wrestling community." 21 and counting.  I'll take all comers!  Michael Phelps won his 21st gold medal, and 23 medals overall, had some wonderful TV time last night.  Touching images of Michael and his mom, mom and michael in the photog frenzy, his new baby “Boomer,” and fiancé, Nicole Johsnon…but, in all honesty, Some of the shots of Michael, ahead of the races, as he mentally prepped are the best. We all know that Olympian athletes are very intense. But famous Olympian, Michael Phelps, and his staring intensity is making the internet giggle with delight, because his intimidation face towards rival Chad le Clos is absolutely amazing! Let's look at some of those, along with commentary from the twitterverse The 23-time Olympic medal winner had shot South Africa's Chad le Clos a death stare ahead of the event as the swimmers prepared for the race  Phelps, wearing his Team USA warm up suit before he entered the pool, looked furious as he waited for the race: had his game face on! Old rivals, Phelps shot Chad leClos that death stare Oh my God that cupping is serious business,' one Twitter user joked as they posted a photo of Phelps as Darth Maul HeHateMe said: When You finally Know The Power of the Dark Side Mason Waugh transformed Phelps into a young Darth Vader and joked: “I have studied you, and found nothing but weakness.” Phelps' furious stare appears to set the South African's hair on fire One social media user compared Phelps' to a petulant child who didn't get his Pepsi One sports fan poked fun at the fact that Phelps was sitting inside the arena with the hook up on his jacket: “when you think it's gonna rain so you wear your raincoat but then it doesn't rain Dana Schwartz jokingly puts Phelps' angry game face down to the fact that he was unable to get coconut milk at Starbucks Coffee “Possessed By Satan” nuff said A speech bubble jokes that LeClos has never heard of Harambe, the 17 year old silverback gorilla who was shot and killed at Cincinatti Zoo after a child fell into his enclosure Phelps matches Grump cat You should Not Mess With Me, or as Yoda: Mess With Me, You should Not! All in all, great results from Phelps.  Go USA, and more to come.  Bring em on!

Read the full story with photos at https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/detail.php?id=224&date=2015-08-30   On the final day of the 15th IAAF World Championships held in Beijing, Mai Ito from the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Track & Field Team ran for Japan in the Women’s Marathon. Although the final day was cloudy compared to the blazing weather throughout the games, Ms. Ito ran confidently in hot conditions and finished first among all Japanese runners, earning her the right to run in the 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ms. Ito focused on training and overcame harsh conditions in preparation for her second time competing in the World Championships. For this marathon, she concentrated on strengthening her muscles, with particular focus on training her lower body by performing squats with weights – a workout that she endured even after suffering a stress fracture in her foot. Paying close attention to everyday diet and hydration prior to the competition was another factor contributing to her strong performance. She consumed more protein and carbohydrates, chose jellied food if she felt that this was a better choice for her digestion, and took amino acid supplements in addition to her meals to counter fatigue. Careful hydration before and during running is just as important as daily diet. Ms. Ito chose ion supply drinks with optimum amounts of sugars to prevent dehydration throughout and to support her spurt in the latter part of her run.She was careful about hydration during training and at competitions, and the results of her daily adjustments were obvious from her performance at the marathon beyond the 30 kilometers point. While many runners down-paced by trying to catch up with the fastest spurting group, Ms. Ito’s determined run earned her a ticket to the upcoming Olympics after she finished 7th, the highest among Japanese runners. Otsuka Pharmaceutical Track & Field Team’s athletes receive physical training and instructions on diet & hydration from instructors, coaches and a dietitian, all with a scientific approach tailored to each athlete’s physical features and conditions. “It is crucial that each of our athletes recognize the science behind the various support they receive during their training and apply it towards international competitions,” commented Mr. Tadasu Kawano, Team Coach. “Ms. Ito is an ideal role model for other team members. She understands the data very well. Her physical abilities may be compared unfavorably with Western and African competitors, but her perseverance will surely lead her through the competition for medals.” Ms. Ito joined Otsuka’s Track & Field Team, envisioning becoming a world-class athlete after she started running during her high school years. During the daytime away from track & field, Ms. Ito plays an important role in quality assurance at Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc., and she finds pleasure in contributing to the wellbeing of people and patients around the world. “You can find many world-class athletes on the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Track & Field Team. We have an environment here that supports international competition,” says Ms. Ito. “I anticipated the Beijing World Championships race would be held in hot and harsh conditions, so I concentrated on not dragging fatigue after my rehearsals. I communicated actively with the staff members supporting me, to make sure my condition was monitored from all angles. What I have experienced during training for this marathon is an asset, and it will most certainly help me in conditioning towards the Rio de Janeiro Olympics to bring out the best performance of my career and to run in the top tier.” On August 30, the same day that Mai Ito confirmed her place at the Olympics, a younger athlete from Otsuka’s team made a bright debut in Japan. Yui Okada, who joined Otsuka 4 years ago, championed in her very first full marathon in Hokkaido. This was her second victory following a winning run in a half marathon, also her first time competing at that distance. “If there is anything I am uncertain of, I ask. I ask my teammates and dietitian what I should be doing to take care of myself. At Otsuka, I get the support I need to improve myself,” says the young debutante. Otsuka’s younger generation athletes are striving for world-class results, and Otsuka Track & Field Team is proud of supporting promising young athletes through its vast knowledge and experience of wellbeing.

Those who clapped and cheered when news came that Chicago didn't get the 2016 Olympics were not glad America lost, they were glad that Obama lost and was exposed as less popular and less the world leader his PR machine has tried to convince the world he is. They cheered for reality hitting Obama in the face and because it showed he is not all that. They cheered because maybe his sway on health care reform and cape-and-trade and more big spending - policies that many believe are harmful to America - may have a chance of defeat. They cheered against an ego run amuck and a president running for the world leader rather than one whose priority is to run America. They cheered because Obama thought he could just ride in on his white horse and get credit for getting the 2016 because he was Obama the great. They cheered because the loss for Obama showed a chink in his armor and perpetuation of his myth of hypnotizing charisma that causes women to faint and men to have chills run up their legs. It shows that the world isn't falling for it hook line and sinker. It showed that maybe there are brakes on what some see as a run away train off the track and heading over the cliff. Americans want a better America and a better future and many do not believe dear leader is taking us there. They were cheering for America not against it. They were cheering that finally there was some truth about Obama that could not be concealed. The media can't always provide the magic carpet.

A talk by Larry Bennett, Political Science Department, DePaul University. Chicago is one of seven finalists seeking the designation as host city for the 2016 summer Olympic Games. Eight years in advance of the Games, several major components of the Chicago proposal have been worked out and have drawn the attention of local residents and the media. Many other parts of the Chicago Olympic plan remain unspecified at this time. Among the uncertainties associated with the Chicago Olympic bid, and if Chicago wins the contest to host the 2016 Games, with the Games themselves, are the following: How will the Games be financed? What kind of overall economic boost can Chicago anticipate from hosting the 2016 Olympics? Are the city's neighborhoods where major Olympic facilities will be located--notably the mid-South Side Washington Park area, and the near-South Side lakefront--likely to benefit in any fundamental, long-term way from the Games?
