What Tariffs Mean in Michigan

During his term, former U.S. President Donald Trump focused on the issue of manufacturing, specifically within the auto industry. Now he's promising more tariffs on foreign made goods and raw materials if he becomes president once again. One of the tariffs that he pursued back in 2018 was requested by a Michigan company, Whirlpool, the maker of various appliances. "Whirlpool had been petitioning the U.S. government for years that that their foreign competitors L.G. and Samsung had been unfairly dumping cheaper made and with cheaper labor, foreign labor, washing machines in the U.S. market and driving down prices to the point that Whirlpool was having a hard time competing anymore," said Chad Livengood, a politics editor for the Detroit News. Livengood wrote an analysis recently about how trade and tariffs have affected Michigan and decodes what the candidates are saying about them this season. He said, while the tariffs helped Whirpool, and created about 1,800 jobs in the U.S., the benefits came at a cost, “The price of washing machines in this country across the board went up 12% in 2018. I mean, there was instant inflation caused by tariffs.” GUEST: Chad Livengood, politics editor at the Detroit News --- Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Right this way. Kelsey Livengood, such an incredible actress who acts in the movie “Clown Motel: 2 Death Do Us Part” (2022). I was thoroughly impressed with this movie. Although filmed in the hot Nevada desert, I would have to give major props to the location scout for finding abandoned caves to film a movie. However, you would never catch me in Nevada, not even to visit Las Vegas, too much bad stuff happens in Nevada. Have you not seen “Army of the Dead” and other zombie/apocalyptic movies in deserts? Kelsey goes on to tell us what it was like on set and to act with other actors such as Tony Moran, Elissa Dowling, and Ari Lehman. Big names in the horror community and I am sure that it was great to work with them on set. Apart from other ‘Clown' movies, this one definitely sets itself apart from other independent movies that involve the scary nightmares of clowns and things that go bump in the night. Clowns are most definitely top on my list of things to be afraid of. Coulrophobia is a REAL fear in case anyone didn't know… I mean, look at Pennywise and Art. Make sure to catch Kelsey on her podcast “A Little Bit of Mischief” wherever podcasts are heard. And she also stars in the new horror short movie “Sorority Babes” alongside Jessa Flux, Angel Nicole Bradford, and Morrigan Thompson. Surrendering to Physiological Birth and Motherhood with Jessica Livengood   What does it mean to surrender to your birth experience? To surrender to motherhood?   This week's episode, we'll be speaking to my friend and Homebirth Collective student Jessica about her experiences with surrender in birth and motherhood. This conversation is so deep and SO useful- I know you're going to gain amazing insight from it.   Before we jump in, I want to share how deeply this concept relates to what we learn inside of The Homebirth Collective. You may wonder-- what makes The HBC different from other childbirth education? And the answer is that it's not strictly childbirth education. Yes, it's that, but it's so much more. Inside of The HBC we're focusing on the preparation of birth-- physical birth, and the spiritual, mental, emotional birth into motherhood. We spend weeks tending to the primal mother and learning how to lean into what we already have and have been given. If you're looking to use your birth experience as a transformational catalyst into a grounded motherhood, I'd love to have you inside of The HBC. Click the link in the show notes to join, and don't forget to use the code PODCAST for 10% off at checkout.   Episode Roundup Goodness, Jessica's story and her perspective of her birth are so beneficial to all of us. As we head into this episode roundup, she's given us so much to mull over. I'd like to start with the fact that Jessica has very clearly considered her birth and worked to integrate this experience into herself, her role as a mother and her life as a whole. My friends, this is critical. We talk about this inside of The HBC- the fact that truthfully, it matters less what the events ARE than it does how we INTEGRATE them. Jessica has considered her birth, noted how things unfolded, used her experiences to shape future decisions in motherhood and grown tremendously. This, in my opinion, is the definition of succes. I want to talk about a concept that I really love to flesh out inside of The HBC- this idea of instinct over instruction. When Jessica was shaking her belly and thighs through her waves... WOW. How powerful was this?! This was such a beautiful example of primal movement and intuitive knowing. Her body knew exactly what she needed to do to relax, and chances are it was even deeper than that- her body knew exactly how she needed to move to properly position and align her baby for birth. Our bodies aren't acting randomly. There is purpose to what they are inclined to do-- our biggest task? Get out of the freaking way. Get out of your thinking brain and let your feeling brain kick in. Jessica had to intentionally decide that she was going to continue to do what worked for her-- even in front of her birth team. THAT was the right decision. I love that she shared with this how she realized she was at a crossroads, and she made the decision that was most supportive of her labor, even if it felt awkward the first time she did it. And now- let's chat about what happens when instruction overrides our instinct. Jessica knew that the birthing process would be a time when her brain would be susceptible to outside opinions and instruction, and she learned firsthand how this could unfold. Despite her preparedness to listen to her body and follow her intuition when it came to all aspects of birth, particularly pushing and releasing the baby, she also felt a desire to go along with her midwife's instructions at the end. My friends, I am certainly not questioning the well-meaningness of this care provider, but I do have to remind you that NOBODY is in your body like you are. The reality is that many mothers are NOT as connected and intuitive during birth, because they haven't taken time to reconnect to the primal mother that they are-- but when you HAVE... oh my goodness. Your body knows what to do- your job is to surrender. Instinct over instruction. The two biggest liars in politics had an especially bad week. It's 5-million dollars for one of the many crimes of Donald Trump followed by a 13-count felony indictment over the Congressman currently known as George Santos. It was topped off by a truly bizarre hour organized and broadcast by CNN, which called it a Town Hall but in reality should have been labeled a Trump campaign rally. On a much more positive note, Governor Whitmer's sister is running for Congress. Lynn Whitmer Gereghty is running in a suburban New York City district - for the seat held by new Biden buddy Republican Mike Lawson who upset DCCC chair Sean Patrick Maloney in 2022. And while Congress is in a stalemate over the budget and national debt (threatening an economic disaster), Michigan's legislature is quietly moving forward on enacting Governor Whitmer's budget. Sitting in for the vacationing Jeff Timmer this week is longtime political troublemaker (and this podcast's producer) Walt Sorg. Don't put a ceiling on yourself."   YouTube: https://youtu.be/Qh-e19986zk   Check Out These Highlights:  As I write this introduction and reflect on this quote, I realize the importance of not putting a ceiling on ourselves.  This can be tough for business owners. We are often in our own worlds and minds.   Collaboration, ongoing learning, trial and error, tenacity, having a healthy mindset, and never giving up, are just some of the needed skills we need to tap into as business owners. Having an entrepreneurial mindset can help you start a business but also help you perform at a higher level in your corporate job too.    If you are thinking about starting a side hustle or launching your own business, you are in store for a treat.   About Professor Scott Livengood, a.k.a. the Seinfeld Sensei:  Scott earned his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Maryland and his Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.    He worked at KPMG, and Honeywell International along the way, but his true passion lies in education. On this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a focus on the challenge road agencies face trying to make repairs at a faster pace than the pavement deteriorates.First, Chad Livengood, senior editor at Crain's Detroit Business with a long track record reporting on transportation policy and funding in Michigan, talks about his takeaways from an in-depth story (subscription) posted this week that explores the real needs for roads and bridges owned by the state's 616 road agencies.Later, Craig Newell, administrator of MDOT's statewide planning division, talks about his division's work in monitoring pavement condition and helping with long-term decisions about investments and projects.Gov. Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan plan investing an additional $3.5 billion into state trunklines (M, US, and I-routes) is aimed at staving off deterioration and keeping more pavement in the good category.Livengood cites data from the Transportation Asset Management Council that shows how Michigan's 2015 road funding legislation did not solve the decades-long problem of underinvestment in transportation infrastructure.Livengood also recalls previous reporting that detailed the growth of outer ring suburbs and the demands they create for more publicly financed infrastructure. He asks again, "Can we afford it as we struggle to maintain what we have?" He also recalls this previous commentary: Want to fix roads? Start with the damn term limits.
