Welcome back to Book Talk, everyone. In today's episode, I'm delighted to introduce you to Melissa Koslin, who writes some really great romantic suspense. Her next novel, The Lost Library, started with the hero/aka the Beast, and she built the story from him. I love how for each author and each story, the genesis of the story can be so very different. After focusing on the beast, she looked for a historical mystery to build suspense around. I don't want to give too much away, but you'll love learning more about Melissa's writing and her process. She's at at stage in life where she gets to write in short bursts and make the best of the moments she has. Because of it, Melissa is a plotter with flexibility. She gets joy in creating the background stories and interplay between characters, and it comes out in the writing. Connect with Melissa Koslin Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Pinterest

The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead Read alikes: Ban This Book by Alan Gratz Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein The Wild Book by Juan Villoro
After a long and unanticipated hiatus from podcasting, Alec and Nick return to take a long hard look in the mirror … only to inquire why exactly they possess the impulse to use music as an aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and political measure of the world. The conversation uses the metaphor of the library to chart an interrogation into where music culture, discourse, and practice is at at the dawn of 2024. The episode questions contemporary music culture's relationship to the history of 20th century experimental music, the legacy of John Cage and Sylvere Lotringer's view of him as “The American Philosopher,” historically “legitimatizing” the disparate internet music culture of the 2010s, music culture's production of “reliable disappointments,” year end list-making, holy and sacred music, and more.
The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! My daughter Blondie came to me a few days ago hoping I could share Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass' The Lost Library with you, so here we are! I can see why Blondie enjoyed this Middle-Grade tale, too. We have a by-the-rules cat determined to keep mice out of the old house's basement but refuses to eat them. Mortimer the cat is also a bit envious, for cats do not have many words while mice do. The multiple references to this in the first chapter leave us readers wondering if those abilities with words have something to do with this Middle-Grade mystery. Overall, this first chapter does a fine job establishing the story: we have a sense of our protagonist, we have a sense of how he interacts with others, and we also have a little bit of mystery established with Mortimer describing a guilty feeling about a library book cart in the house's basement. Why is there a book cart down there? How could old library books make a cat feel so guilty, guilty enough to shoo mice along instead of eating them? I'm intrigued! And hey, if you've got a young reader in your household, The Lost Library could be a fun little mystery to share with them for a little extra after-school read. And what will you find in those first five pages? Let's find out! Cheers!

The following entry was scrawled into a diary found in a house located in New Hollow - one of the towns permanently quarantined since the closure of the Great Darkness of 1999. Often simply known as "weird towns," these places are cordoned off from the public due to their "dangerous conditions." While few concrete details are ever offered, there are often rumors about what strangeness lurks in the abandoned cities.Join us on Discord!Follow us on Twitter at @maeltopiaWant to learn more about the world of Maeltopia? On June 26th, 2007, Alex Merley, - a well-known journalist and writer - was allowed into the ADX Florence Facility, a super max prison located in Florence, Colorado. The interview became notorious for many reasons, one being that it is the only known interview with a Neo-Psychotic - an individual afflicted with a unique form of psychosis that emerged only after the Great Darkness of 1999. These individuals are often rumored to be capable of strange inhuman feats, although this is a subject of great contention within various academic and medical circles.Join us on Discord!Want additional perks like extra lore, stories, art, and more? Gina Grafos, Director of Visual infrastructure for the Kranzberg Arts Foundation, stopped by to talk with Nancy about the happenings around the galleries associated with The KAF, including the exhibition "Lost Library" by Stan Strembicki at the High Low Literary Arts Center. Also discussed was the new KAF space, Sophie's Artists Lounge. Gina Grafos For the exhibition “Lost Library” at the High Low, Stan Strembicki photographed books from a flooded library in the Lower Ninth Ward — a historic, Black neighborhood hit hard by the storm — that were scattered in a field. For three years, Strembicki visited the location every few months and documented the books as they decayed. One of the Photographs from "Lost Library" Sophie's Artist Lounge and Street art gallery is an immersive art lounge servicing up high fidelity audio-visuals with a cocktail-focused menu. You can Immerse yourself in their street art gallery and listen to Resident DJs provide the music. Open Wednesday- Saturday from 5:00 PM- 1:30 AM w/ St. Louis and International DJ's from 9:00 PM- 1:00 AM. "I...cannot say that it won't be," She said shrugging. "But this feels right." "You said that about the one in Alexandria." "Well, it's supposed to be the Hidden Library of Alexandria!" Of course, she would say that, but when we found ourselves in a different antechamber beneath the sands she stated clearly that she expected the location to be a misnomer.

On November 13, 2017, the room of Luke Stremholdt at the Wilmore Psychiatric Hospital in Manchester, England was found empty. Upon inspection, he left a letter on his desk recounting the childhood experience (and delusions) that earned him his place in the hospital. No one in the facility claimed to have seen him, except for the few patients who said they saw him outside their windows, attached to a series of strings and being lifted into the sky.Want to learn more about the world of Maeltopia? On May 27th of 2017, the apartment of reporter Elliot Reynard was investigated due to his prolonged absence from both work and social life. Testimony from neighbors said that he had grown isolated and quiet in recent weeks. According to one woman, the last person seen coming from his apartment wore a wide brimmed hat and long coat, not unlike those worn by The Dark Hats - a pejorative term for citizens of the city of Nighthead. The only other clue to his whereabouts was an article, of sorts, saved on his laptop. It was dated only a few weeks before his disappearance and describes Reynard's most recent work. Hosted by Joe Shemtov and Andrea Lemoins Our first season will be dedicated to artifacts kept at the Free Library of Philadelphia. In this episode, we speak with Jim Wright, who recently wrote the book, "The Real James Bond: A True Story of Identity Theft, Avian Intrigue and Ian Fleming." In his book, Wright explores a case of stolen identities and dives into how Fleming “stole” the name of James Bond, a real-life well-known Philadelphia Ornithologist. This episode is timely not only because Sean Connery recently passed away, but also since the latest James Bond movie is to be released next year. A significant part of Wright's book is based on his research at the Free Library of Philadelphia, which keeps the James Bond collection (given by his widow, Mary Wickham Bond). We also talk to Katie Birkwood, Rare Books and Special Collections librarian at the Royal College of Physicians in London, England. In 2016, she curated the exhibition Scholar, Courtier, Magician: the Lost Library of John Dee. Birkwood discusses the alleged origin of the term "007" -- rumors have it that it originated from Dee, a 16th-century advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. We have a rare map of the Northwest West Passage made by John Dee in the Rare Book Department. The opening narration by Raphael Corkhill is from the Audible version of "The Real James Bond," published by Schiffer Publishing. This podcast was edited by Hannah Cho.

The Rotten Pumpkin Man After the Great Darkness of 1999, many towns that were once occupied were discovered abandoned. One such town, Harvest Creek, is located just outside the borders of Autumn City. One of the many artifacts discovered after the hamlet's apparent desertion was a journal located in one of the empty residence. The small book, which contained an account of a supposed mass murder at the hands of a strange folklore figure, became infamous for its similarities to Autumn City's own killer - Jack Lantern. Some have speculated that Jack Lantern was once a citizen of the small town, while others believe that the killer based his haunting persona on the antagonist of the bloody tale. There are even those who have come to believe that Jack Lantern isn't human at all, but the Rotten Pumpkin Man himself. The Breath-Taker Interview On June 26th, 2007, Alex Merley, - a well-know journalist and writer - was allowed into the ADX Florence Facility, a super max prison located in Florence, Colorado. The interview became notorious for many reasons, one being that it is the only known interview with a Neo-Psychotic - an individual afflicted with a unique form of psychosis that emerged only after the Great Darkness of 1999. These individuals are often rumored to be capable of strange inhuman feats, although this is a subject of great contention within various academic and medical circles. Mr Shroud and His Shadow The following account was discovered on a hard drive left in the attic of an apartment in Bakewell, England. No name was attached to the uncovered file, although it has been theorized the individual was a student of the famed Mistoric University - a well-known institution for its high level of educational standards, as well as its large offering of esoteric studies, including "dark studies" (studies focusing on the history and scientific discoveries revolving around the Great Darkness of 1999). However, a search of the university's faculty has never turned up the name "Shroud" as anyone who has ever been employed there. The authenticity of the account remains a mystery and largely regarded as a work of fiction. The Amniotic Sea The following letter was found in the wall of one of the rooms located in the now closed Highland Gardens Sanitarium. The individual in the letter seemed to have been one of many people victimized by the infamous Dr. Abernasus Coldglow. Coldglow was known to use hypno-regressive therapy on his patients in order to recover memories from the Great Darkness of 1999. However, when it was found that such attempts often caused permanent neurological damage or death, the practice was outlawed. Despite this, Coldglow continued his practice illegally, leaving a trail of dead and/or mad patients behind him. The current letter seems to be from yet another of his victims. The Journal of The Thrice Mad Silus Olmes In 1952, a strange individual by the name of Silus Olmes was admitted into the Piedmont Sanitarium located just outside Boston (Before Boston was destroyed by "The Tempest" and was re-built into New Victoria). The middle-to-late aged man was remanded into the custody of the institution after his family verified that he had lost touch with reality and was no longer able to function in day-to-day activities. While many mentally ill patients were in Piedmont Sanitarium at the time, Olmes came to be recognized as unique, as the likes of his pathology, at least its specifics, were anything but textbook. Specifically, Olmes claimed he could traverse beyond the lands of sleep, and explore the deeper, darker dimensions it had to offer. He came to name this realm “The Great Unconscious.” Throughout the years, Olmes claimed there was an encroaching doom “swelling beneath the pillow of every sleeping Bostonian,” and that the benighted denizens of the Great Unconscious were poised to enter our world. Another uniquity granted to Olmes, which couldn’t be explained (as he was, for the most part, relegated to the confines of his cell, or carefully monitored when he wasn’t) was that he seemed to have intimate knowledge of other strange events occurring in Boston – events that only a small circle of Piedmont Sanitarium psychiatrists knew about. The Journal from which the following excerpts were extracted were written in all manner of fluids, as Olmes was not allowed a proper writing utensil. He scrawled his accounts on the walls in blood, urine, feces, and even insect remains. It was all later transcribed and came to be known as the notorious "Mad Script of the Thrice Mad Silus Olmes." Considering what eventually transpired in New Victoria, some view Olme's words as prophecies. Others believe they are the ramblings of a terribly sick mind. Monsterhood The following was scrawled into a diary found in a house located in New Hollow - one of the towns permanently quarantined since the closure of the Great Darkness of 1999. Often simply known as "weird towns," these places are cordoned off from the public due to their "dangerous conditions." While few concrete details are ever offered, there are often rumors about what strangeness lurks in the abandoned cities. After being closed in 2001, New Hollow was the subject of many such rumors. Some stated that time worked differently in the city, while others claimed consciousness interacted with the town in some bizarre way. In 2007, a group of brave (or stupid) urban explorers trespassed the city's borders. Exploring various places, the adventurers found a strange diary in one of the many houses in the city. While the house seemed to be the same one described in the diary, the small book was found in a child's bedroom full of toys, old clothing, and a small library of children's books. Curiously, all the books were face out except one - "The Hag in the Hut" - which, when flipped over, revealed a haggard looking witch on its cover. Additionally, and to the explorers' chagrin, they also reportedly found a pile of human bones living beneath the room's bed. After missing for a week, only 2 of the 5 trespassers came back from the town. Authorities took the individuals into custody, and the diary the individuals brought back with them was eventually given to researchers at Mistoric university, as few artifacts from the quarantined zones are available for research. As for the remaining explorers, it was never discovered, or at least revealed, what became of them. The Elvicsteins and the Deadnaut The following interview was recorded by the famed “weird” journalist, Arthur W. Hague, in Norwich, Britain 1964. Mr. Hague had tracked down and found an individual claiming to have information regarding the strange rumors surrounding the Elvicsteins—a reclusive German family surrounded by rumors of mysticism and forbidden scientific experimentation, especially as it pertains to their activities during the second World War. The individual whose testimony you will hear requested that Mr. Hague not divulge his identity, and so his name was never tendered in his report. The Disappearance of the Garden City of Wrotha As many people know, the City of Wrotha was discovered in 2010 by a farmer in Greenland. However, after a lengthy legal battle regarding the ownership of the ruins, the ancient city eventually came under the ownership of the Government of Denmark. As such, a research team was sent in to investigate the site’s historical significance. However, in late January of 2015 the impossible happened: the half mile long city disappeared, along with the research team that was in it. Upon investigation of the site, the journal of a one Dr. Timothy Fisker, the lead archeologist of the research team, was found buried near the site. The following is the content of that journal. Post Traumatic Nightmare On March 16th of 2005, a man wearing a military uniform was discovered wandering just outside the borders of New Victoria. The man was quickly quarantined, like the city he came from, and it was later discovered that he was part of one of several military units sent into New Victoria during its evacuation in 1993. The men and women of the man's platoon were thought to have died during the chaos of the mass exit. After being quarantined, the soldier was monitored for four days until, upon the morning of the fifth day, he was found dead - he had died in his sleep. The following content was written in a journal he was given for the purpose of writing down what he remembered. It was his only entry. The Scream Eater After friends suspected something was wrong, police stormed the home of Geoffrey Paisley (a difficult task given its level of security). However, their search found the place abandoned. While Mr. Paisley was gone, a cursory evaluation of his bedroom drawers led to the discovery of his journal. Examinations of its content, primarily its last entries, were seen by most to be the delusions of a reality-detached man, creating fantasies to deal with his recent trauma. The following are the last known words of the now missing Mr. Geoffrey Paisley. Looking for a way to support us and receive perks like early access to podcast episodes and behind-the-scenes videos? The Journal of Dr. Neiman Dietrich The following journal entries are thought to be the notes and writings of Dr. Neiman Dietrich—a now notorious historical figure best known for his crimes against humanity during the Wasting House epidemic, which took place directly after the Great Darkness of 1999, between the years 2000 and 2002. Upon investigation of the Barlow Wasting House facilities, located in Pennsylvania, authorities found evidence of all manner of hideous cruelty. But it was only in 2005, when a certain anthropological team of researchers thoroughly explored the premises, that a half-rotted journal was discovered in a hidden cubby beneath an unsuspecting office desk. The following is the content of that journal. Looking for a way to support us and receive perks like early access to podcast episodes and behind-the-scenes videos? Check out our Patreon! What Lies Beneath Recently, Detective Andrew Ratterton of Watertyne Township Police Department was reported missing. The interior of his home showed signs of a break-in, as much of his furniture and belongings were found strewn across the house and property. Strangely, his living room floor had been torn up, and a large hole dug deep into the ground below the house. The only sign of the detective's presence were his eye glasses, which were found in the dirt of the aforementioned cavity. While Ratterton was not found, a thorough sweep of the house revealed a journal and wrapped up cassette tape found in one of his ceiling panels. The following is the last excerpt from Ratterton’s journal, and the audio recording it references. The Skeleton Kids On the Halloween of 2002, a strange and grotesque slew of events transpired in the small town of Candleton, Minnesota. While rumors of repeat happenings and subsequent cover-ups have circulated for years, on October 31, 2017, authorities were faced with a genuine replay of those 2002 incidents. The following account was the last journal entry of the victim, Wallace Ackerman, which was penned the morning of October 31st, only hours prior to his death. Aside from the journal entry, the only other clue left at the scene was the fact that the backdoor lock has been picked. Nightmare Zero The following account was retrieved from the journal of Dr. Neil Zaveri, a prominent psychiatrist and director of New Saint's Hospital's psychiatric unit in New Victoria. The doctor was known to be studying various strains of the strange New Victoria sleeping disease that first emerged in the city during the early 1990's. However, after the epidemic sleeping syndrome threatened to spread beyond the borders of New Victoria, the whole city soon became quarantined. The journal was retrieved during one of several government funded exploration missions after the city's abandonment in 1993. While Zaveri’s journal was found in the bottom drawer of his office desk, long abandoned and covered in cob webs, Zaveri himself was nowhere to be found. The Spirit Photographer In October of 2006, Miles Tammer was the only remaining witness to an odd mass disappearance that took place at the annual Nemeroff Masquerade - a yearly costume party thrown by millionaire, Stanley Nemeroff, at his lake house in Camden, Maine. While Mr. Tammer was initially held as a person of interest, the lack of evidence tying him to any wrong-doing eventually lead to his release. Shortly after, Mr. Tammer disappeared from the country, but had left a letter tacked to the wall of his apartment's entryway. The note was a telling of the events of the night in question, which drastically differed from his account tendered to the police, where he claimed the guests had simply disappeared after he returned from his smoke break. The following is the content of Mr. Tammer's letter. Looking for a way to support us and receive perks like early access to podcast episodes and behind-the-scenes videos? Check out our Patreon! Still Born Exploring the mess of her deceased grandfather's attic, Lindsey Jacobs happened upon her late elder's journal. While much of it was filled with the mundane on-goings of his daily life, she stumbled upon a strange and morose account concerning a certain tragic citizen of Mercy Ridge. The story only spanned the life of a couple of pages and was peculiarly never mentioned again anywhere in the rest of the journal. Greener Pastures On July 31, 2008, a strange journal was found near the banks of Green Lake in Thunderburg, Ohio. The small diary belonged to a one Joseph Harland. Harland was reported missing, along with his wife and kids, only a few days before the journal was recovered. The following excerpts are, presumably, the last few entries that were logged into the tiny book before the owner and his family went missing. The Journal of Dr. Theodore Willard While murderous doctors are certainly a common archetype used in both past and contemporary horror stories, few compare to the actually events that took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s in a small English town called Willard. A direct descendent of the city’s founders, which was established sometime during the late 1500s, Dr. Theodore Willard was the town physician and medical expert. In fact, his surgical expertise was known far and wide, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to travel long distances in order to receive his care. However, in the summer of 1917, Dr. Willard’s hospital was burnt to the ground (the cause of the fire was never determined), and what responders found in the debris was nothing short of horrifying: strange writings, bizarre torture devices, and countless bodies (in various states of hideous disrepair). While little is known about the specifics of Dr. Willard’s misdeeds, hints of his atrocities were left in a small personal journal recovered from the site of the fire. The following are excerpts from the journal of Dr. Willard himself. Looking for a way to support us and receive perks like early access to podcast episodes and behind-the-scenes videos?
