Oh my! It's Ludie Sextons new “O” Anthology from Warden Comics! We sat down with, the always too humble, indie work-horse Ludie Sexton as he Kickstarts yet another project from his imprint, Warden Comics. Always creating new opportunities for budding writers and sequential artists to showcase their storytelling, he's put together the “O” Anthology as a collection of octopod based stories.Bucking the all to familiar Lovecraftian tropes, this cephalopod themed collection has a story for everyone from horror to comedy to sci-fi, . Boasting an array of creative storytellers from all walks of life. “O” shines a light on a plethora of up and coming student creators and emerging voices from the indies. Even a few seasoned hats of the comic game show up, like longtime comic academic Michael Kraiger and the voice you're reading now, Tadd Galusha. Not to make this write-up too personal, but it was an absolute pleasure taking part in this project. Ludie brought me in to the fold with a very unique proposition, to illustrate a poem that specifically played to the fiddle of my heart. With story written by him, poetry provided by Grace Crocker, and Sophie Lee assisting me on colors; we put together a pretty wonderful little short, titled “Rage.” “Rage” angrily chews at the fat of time from the perspective of a creature that very well could be the result of panspermia. Some real deal science fiction, folks! “O” Anthology is Kickstarting right now, and through the month of February. So if you can, spare a few bucks and support the octo-fueled tales from a new wave of indie creators. It's the catch of the day with something fresh for everyone!A note from Tadd: The “NOW” is the resurgence of the independent creator through crowd sourcing and self-publishing availability. As the veil gets pulled back ever further and the predatory practices of corporate models get revealed, it is more and more important to support those who actually create the stories and art that we as consumers enjoy. So SUPPORT INDIE PROJECTS and their CREATORS. Help make the indies the mainstream. Even the smallest of gestures can be of the biggest help.Have you experienced the elusive and majestic energy of the Blue Tiger? Had a sighting in the wilderness of the eternal forest? Drank the blue milk of it's revenge? Then let the people know it exists! And check out “TAIGA”, Tadd's latest graphic novel with new pages weekly. As fire managers, we have a duty to consider everyone who is going to be impacted by our actions, whether it be the neighbors adjacent to your burn or a town three counties away where the smoke is settling down. In this episode of Friends of Fire, Ludie Bond, Public Information Officer (PIO) / Wildfire Mitigation Specialist with the Florida Forest Service, imparts that “You may not be a communications professional, but you are a fire professional, you are a prescribed burn professional, and as such, communications is key to being able to have that successful prescribed burn program.” As a trusted messenger to many communities through building relationships and adaptive messaging, Ludie describes key factors to a successful communications plan that benefits the community, your work, and ecosystem restoration as a whole. Successful Communication Plan: 1. Identify your audience[s] 2. Build a relationship with your audience 3. Learn about what kind of information your audience needs / is interested in 4. Determine where your audience gets their information 5. Identify their trusted messengers 6. Act as the trusted messenger or work with your audience's trusted messenger to disseminate information to the community 7. Use the communication methods that your audience prefers to share the information that they should and/or want to know 8. Be transparent, honest, patient, and understanding 9. Establish a year-round communications plan in preparation for, during, and after fire operations

What had the most impactful effect on your app's growth besides the people who make up your team? How do you categorize a micro-influencer? Today we're talking about Horton Foote (1916-2009), the award-winning playwright and screenwriter. In the recently released documentary Horton Foote: The Road to Home, the celebrated screenwriter Anne Rapp helps us to learn more about this unsung Texas and American legend. Foote was born and raised in Wharton, Texas, and he went on to become a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, the winner of two Academy Awards for screenwriting, an Emmy Award for television writing, and was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts among numerous other theatrical and literary prizes. His best known works are the Oscar-winning screenplays for To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and Tender Mercies (1983). Ann Rapp met Foote on the set of Tender Mercies, where she worked as a screenplay supervisor. She developed a life-long friendship with this unsung gentleman playwright. With this documentary, she wants to share with everybody her inside look into Foote's humanity, integrity and empathy that played into his work during his whole life. “To be a good writer, you don't have to be educated, you don't even need to speak good grammar. If you are an observer and a listener, and you find a voice to reflect that, then you can write. Horton was the best listener I've ever known.” - Anne Rapp Time Stamps: 3:40 - Introducing Anne Rapp and her film Horton Foote: the Road to Home. 5:00 - When and where the film will be released to a wider audience. 9:08 - Who Horton Foote was. 13:14 - The first clip from the film: people talking about his writing and personality. 15:32 - What the film is really about. 20:35 - How it was for Anne to spend time visiting Horton Foote and recording him. 25:05 - What is Foote's home town Wharton, Texas like. 32:56 - The second clip: Ludie's monologue from the play The Trip to Bountiful. 34:09 - Why it took 13 years for Anne to release this documentary. 42:00 - How Foote's daughters reacted to the film. 50:10 - The experience of supervising Foote's scripts. 55:33 - What it was like for Anne to work with Robert Duvall. 59:55 - What it was like to work with Robert Altman and how Anne became a screenwriter. 1:04:30 - The storytelling tradition in Texas. 1:09:22 - What Anne's writing process looks like. 1:13:40 - What is the essence of Foote's writing genius. 1:18:50 - How young people can get to know his work better. 1:21:10 - What Anne's wish for the documentary is and what her next projects are. Have you ever wondered about your family history, and how family traditions or secrets through the years may affect you, your behavior, and major aspects of your life? Velvet (AuthorHouse, 2013) begins with Ludie, a young, unwed mother escaping reality down a dusty Southern road. Author Holly Charles also found a way to escape reality; or, rather, found a means to cope with reality years ago when she first began to write about her complicated relationship with her mother. It was through her own extensive research and many meaningful conversations with her grandmother that she identified several common themes in mother/daughter relationships particularly in (but not exclusive to) the African American community. All mothers, regardless of race and culture, seek to protect their children from the demons and disappointments they themselves have been hindered by. Trying to spare their own daughters the pangs of womanhood and colorist ideals causes African American mothers to reproduce their own personal feelings of inferiority, fear and lack of esteem. Velvet is series of vignettes that chronicles poignant conversations and pivotal moments in the lives of four generations of women, all connected by blood, circumstance and the common tug-of-war that exists between mother and daughter. Holly Charles was raised just north of Chicago and attended Purdue University for her undergraduate studies. She later earned a graduate degree in English from Prairie View A&M University. Writing has been a therapeutic outlet for her since childhood, whether through music, poetry or prose. Her personal journey to find herself as a woman and as a writer became her graduate thesis: Velvet: the Burden of Melanin and Motherhood, which has now been transformed into her first book, Velvet. In addition to her work as a writer, Charles teaches English to high school students through a Houston-area community college. She will debut her first stage play, In All Thy Getting, this spring at Houston’s Ensemble Theater. James Stancil is an independent scholar, freelance journalist, and the President and CEO of Intellect U Well, Inc. a Houston-area non-profit dedicated to increasing the joy of reading and media literacy in young people.
