A Great Showcase for UnityThe SSE Arena in Belfast was buzzing with positivity last Saturday as several thousand people participated in one of the largest public discussions held recently on constitutional change and the potential for Irish Unity. Over ten thousand more joined online. The organisers did a remarkable job in bringing together a first class panel of academics, political leaders, artists, economists, protestant voices, comedians, trade unionists and Gaels. Their success can be measured in part by the fact that the audience remained interested and engaged for over four hours.I was delighted to be there. Malachy McCourt – a Great IrishmanLast week a packed gathering of friends and family met in New York to say goodbye to Malachy McCourt.  Malachy died in March aged 91. Malachy was a brother of Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes. Malachy himself was an accomplished writer.

From 2003 - Malachy McCourt (younger brother of best-selling author Frank McCourt) discusses his book "The Claddagh Ring: Ireland's Cherished Symbol of Friendship, Loyalty and Love."

During the course of his life, Malachy McCourt was a pioneer in talk radio, a soap opera star, a best-selling author; a political activist, and a candidate for governor of the state of New York. Born in Brooklyn in 1931, McCourt was raised in Limerick, Ireland, and returned to the United States in 1952. He died Monday at the age of 92.Malachy McCourt was a friend of the station - speaking with Joe Donahue often. He was last on The Roundtable in 2017 around the release of his book “Death Need Not Be Fatal.”We share a portion of that interview this morning in memoriam.

New York's most famous Irish man tells Brendan about his life and times and how he is not dead yet

Off The Meter represents the culmination of a forty-year career of driving a yellow cab while trying to make a difference in the world.John McDonagh is currently producer and host of Radio Free Eireann and Talk Mac, We and Thee with Malachy McCourt and Corey Kilgannon, a weekly radio shows heard on Pacifica station WBAI, New York. John began his career as a NYC Yellow cab driver after serving in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War.  He has been writing and performing at Caroline's, the Comic Strip, the Huntington Cinema Arts Center, NY Society for Ethical Culture, the Puffin Room SOHO, and Rocky Sullivan's pub among others.  He is an active member of Irish American Writers and Artists.  As a political activist, John was a monitor in the Nicaraguan elections in 1990, organized “Cabbies Against Bush” campaign in NYC during the 2004 republican convention, was editor of the Irish People newspaper, hosted an Irish radio show in Perth, Australia, works with Veterans for peace, and is the go-to voice of Irish American activism.  John joins Mick and Mook on September 21st.
