#560 One Ball and Boe - Richard is sad to note the death of a man who has fuelled and spoiled his erotic fantasies. His guest John Kearns, has finally been allowed into the Leicester Square Theatre on the fifth or sixth time on the pod - it's the thoughtful and measured John Kearns. In a return to endless old-school RHLSTPs it's a sprawling pod, covering very old tortoises, Raymond Briggs, Rich's dad giving a talk at the BFI, the effects of the Taskmaster bounce (or plunge in Rich's case), rumours about Top Coppers and much more. Too much more. Gloriously too much more.See RHLSTP at the Edinburgh Fringe https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/richard-herring-rhlstpSee Richard's tour http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourSee RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. We don't believe in an interventionist pod, but we know, darling, that you do. From font size to Five Guys, ogling bulges to leathering pipes, we invite Edinburgh Comedy Award double winner the Kearnel to pick over a long dark night in Nick's red right hands, moving through the flames of anarchy and the winds of tyranny and also the difference between Reiss and M&S suit sizes. It's a glorious fusion of nostalgia, tinsel and song this week in a show recorded with an audience at the BBC Radio Theatre. Clive talks to punk princess Toyah Willcox about her Xmas Party tour with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and a blistering year that's seen her perform at Glastonbury, take part in Strictly Come Dancing and join the cast of Now That's What I Call a Musical. To celebrate 30 years since boyband East 17 scaled the charts with Stay Another Day - songwriter Tony Mortimer performs the song with Edele Lynch of B*Witched for a boy and girl band treat. Find out the true origin of the song and why it almost wasn't released. There's bromance, baubles and banter with a pair of Edinburgh Comedy Award winners - Adam Riches and John Kearns - who this year are collaborating on a "once in a lifetime, yuletide extravaganza" show at the Soho Theatre. And the columnist, broadcaster and newly-announced MasterChef host Grace Dent - who knows a thing or two about comfort eating having written a book about it - on creating Christmas food memories, including loading up on yellow-stickered trophies at the supermarket late on Christmas Eve. Plus in this 40th anniversary year since the release of Wham's Last Christmas we have a gorgeous soulful version from singer and former UK Jazz Act Of The Year - Georgia Cecile. Presented by Clive Anderson Produced by Olive Clancy

Irish Stew delves into the rich world of Irish American literature through the eyes and pen of guest John Kearns, a New Yorker by way of Philadelphia and a relentless storyteller in short stories, novels, plays, poetry, screenwriting, and song. Our conversation explores John's creative processes, the importance of maintaining cultural roots, the differences between Irish American identities in Philadelphia and New York, and his long run as the curator of the monthly Irish American Writers & Artists Salon. From an early age, he's always been writing, inspired by his family story, cultural heritage, and his deep connection to Irish literature. He shares the creative process behind his novels The World and Worlds and his play Boann and the Well of Wisdom, a poetic drama inspired by Boann, the Irish goddess of poetry who created the River Boyne. John talks about the challenges bringing Boann from script to stage and his satisfaction at seeing it take top honors at the recent Origin Theatre 1st Irish Festival. And John's taking Boann and the Well of Wisdom on the road, to Ireland. It's too early to talk about gourds, right? We hold on to the last vestiges of summer by immersing ourselves in Nantucket's Perfect Couple. Anyone? Bueller?) We delve into Couples Therapy too, of course, don't worry your pretty little heads. And our guest this week! JOHN MEAGHER was recently featured in ROLLING STONE who said he was "Ireland's next great comedian." The Irish Times said “it's like watching a young Irish Billy Connolly” he won an award at last year's Edinburgh Festival and he's been a finalist at the greatest Best Act competitions including ones at The Hackney Empire, The Leicester Mercury's, the BBC AND The Leicester Square Theatre. He's also turned his hand to investigative journalism and has an explosive documentary coming out on BBC Radio 4 in April called The Devil's Own which is going to shock the world. I was lucky enough to get an inside scoop and I can't believe what he's uncovered. It's ostensibly about a crazy underground devil-worshipping cult called the White Hoods but what he uncovers is stranger than any fiction you can imagine and if it wasn't going out on the BBC I wouldn't even believe it. It's only Films To Be Buried With!Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with brilliant comic JOHN KEARNS!You may know John from his unmistakeable wig and teeth in a standup capacity, or maybe from his Taskmaster-ing, but one thing is for sure - if you haven't made his acquaintance yet you'll become fast friends during this episode. A glorious debut from John, as he and Brett go into this whole life and film thing including the perils of award winning success over early success, fear of being a rumour, being a new(ish) parent, a stint in the Houses Of Parliament, Catholicism, opening credits revelations, Charlie Chocolate and kitchen sink dramas... And so much more! Naturally said wig and teeth are not present in this episode but you can catch the whole thing in person very soon... With tipoff less than a week away, we have a great podcast for you as the head coaches of both William & Mary men's and women's basketball join us! First, hosts Brendan Doyle and John Kearns discuss what we're looking for in Monday's season-opening doubleheader, with the women playing at 5pm and the men following them at 7:30pm. Then, we kick it to Coach Erin Dickerson Davis. Coach E and the NBN crew discuss the transition into the new job, her enthusiasm for her staff, and her returning stars. After Coach E, we go to Coach Dane Fischer to ask about the Tribe's new faces, building a roster, and why this team reminds Coach Fischer of how he constructed his first team at W&M.Have a question for for us on the pod? John Kearns is out this week, but Brendan is joined by frequent guest and friend of the program Tommy Glasgow, of the Holy City Hoops podcast and blog focusing on College of Charleston basketball. Brendan and Tommy give their thoughts on the new additions to the CAA and the league's positioning before running through this year's recently released men's preseason poll. We preview each team by providing a bold prediction and focusing on some big questions - who's the best incoming team, what gives with all the roster turnover this season, and should Towson actually be the consensus favorite in the league? Then, we briefly touch on the women's preseason poll, Charleston's rapid rise in the league, and W&M's two preseason All-CAA First Team selections. Lastly, Tommy and Brendan each give their "One Thing" for the week before signing off this episode of The NBN Pod.Have a question for for us on the pod? John Kearns does art and chats to Annie McGrath. Secret Artists is a podcast hosted by comedian and artist, Annie McGrath. Each week her guest selects a subject which inspires them to create an artwork... It could be an object, a place, a person, an animal... Whilst drawing and painting, Annie and her guest enjoy a nice chat. Often silly. Sometimes serious. Mainly relaxing.https://supporter.acast.com/secretartistsTo see them painting, close ups of the "works of art" and more behind the scenes go to the Secret Artists Instagram:@secretartpodTwitter:@secretartpod#:#secretartistspodMore Annie:www.amcgrath.artTwitter:@AnnieMcTweetAnnie's Art:@mcgrath.artAnnie's Life:@mcgrath.annieMore John:Twitterhttps://www.johnkearnscomedy.co.uk/Turtle Canyon Comedy:www.turtlecanyoncomedy.comTwitter:@turtlecanyoncomInstagram:@turtlecanyoncomOther Turtle Canyon Comedy podcastsUp Your FootfallGhastly WomenCongrats on the new...The Comedy Walking TourSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/secretartists. John Kearns may not be here this week, but we eventually replace him with an All-CAA talent, so that's a win in our book. First though, Brendan and Cameron catch up before pivoting to discuss the Tribe men's recruiting outlook this summer (3:19). We go through the offers extended by the team thus far and give our takes on W&M's biggest needs in the 2022 recruiting class. After that, we briefly answer listener questions (14:35) -- except for transfer-adjacent ones, which will be their own episode. Then, Tribe star Sydney Wagner joins the program for an interview about her increased role, the team's decision to opt out, and her different nicknames (22:42). We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did!Have a question for for us on the pod? Fire it over to brendan@nobidnation.com or tweet at us @NoBidNation. Visit the blog at nobidnation.com.
John Kearns is out this week, so Cameron and Brendan jump right into talking Tribe hoops. Off the bat, we break down the good and the bad from the W&M women's split at Charleston (0:00) before moving to the men's loss at home against Drexel (12:54). After our takes on where the Tribe stands, we dive into the conference at large, first the absolute mess that is the men's CAA standings (27:46) and then the more defined tiers on the women's side (32:31) and, in both cases, what that means for the College. Following that, we quickly give our keys to the weekend for the Tribe (36:00) before finishing up with Shout-Outs and Step-Ups (40:53).Note: this episode was recorded before news dropped about the cancellation of the women's games this weekend against Towson.Have a question for for us on the pod? In which we discover that John has only driven through Harrisonburg once and didn't stop, and that Brendan has a pro-Harrisonburg bias. Before the basketball talk, Cameron, Brendan and John discuss our thoughts on the events at the Capitol last week (0:00) and then the situation around cutting sports at East Carolina University and its parallels to the Tribe 7 (5:51). Without further ado, we jump into the men's win over Delaware Saturday, how concerned we are with the pattern of slow starts, and our take on the postponement of Sunday's game (9:04). Then, we move onto the women's winless weekend at Delaware: the team's issues, just how good the Blue Hens are, and the bright spots in the losses (26:19). After that, we go around the CAA (33:16) -- news about the conference tournaments, a breakdown of last weekend's results, and a look ahead to this weekend. Finally, we bring back our weekly segment, "Shout-outs and Step-ups," to close out the show (53:45).Have a question for for us on the pod? Covid continues to wreak havoc on the basketball season, but at least we can make it entertaining! Cameron and Brendan welcome the third member of the NBN crew, John Kearns, onto the pod again. We jump right into W&M women's basketball's season-opening losses to ODU and Richmond, analyzing the team's offensive struggles (0:00). We then talk about the men's team returning from quarantine early (11:28) and its hastily rescheduled contest against Virginia, which was cancelled after recording. Speaking of Virginia, we explore W&M's "little brother complex" when it comes to U.Va., in sports but also overall in the student body. Finally, we explore John's "KYUSAG" model and how it works (35:08) before looking at how the model sees the CAA early in the season (41:50). Hint: Charleston fans might be pleased.Have a question for for us on the pod? Fire it over to brendan@nobidnation.com or tweet at us @NoBidNation. Visit the blog at nobidnation.com.
In which Brendan is joined by John Kearns on the Thornton Scott hype team, to the chagrin of Cameron. John, the third member of the No Bid Nation crew, joins us this week for the full episode. We start out talking about the state of Tribe Athletics in terms of the virus (0:00) before John gives us his thoughts on the cutting of sports at W&M (6:41). Then, we transition to discussing John's series of posts on the blog, The Fischer Effect -- dissecting the differences between Tony Shaver and Dane Fischer (19:31), the jump Thornton Scott and Luke Loewe made last season (24:46), and what the W&M men can look forward to this year (37:45). Finally, since Brendan forgot to put out a call for Q&A, John asks the two regular hosts about dark horses in the CAA this season (49:44) and the best thing Dane has done in his time at the College (53:19).Note: this episode was recorded before news dropped about the ouster of Samantha Huge and the potential covid-19 outbreak within Tribe Athletics. We'll talk about both of those next week.Have a question for Q&A or feedback for our Question of the Week? Fire it over to brendan@nobidnation.com or tweet at us @NoBidNation.
