On Episode 150 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis kicks off a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is DAVID GAUTREAUX, the actor perhaps best known for work he never did – the role of Vulcan science officer Xon in the proposed Star Trek: Phase II television series. When the series was aborted, he was given the role of Commander Branch in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. David has also guest-starred in numerous television series including Man From Atlantis, Search for Tomorrow, One Life to Live, T. J. Hooker, L.A. Law, ER, Rules of Engagement, Boston Legal, and The Beast. He played recurring roles on Franklin & Bash, Damages, and the latest incarnation of S.W.A.T. In this interview, David discusses with Curtis about his career in and out of Star Trek, complete with several nuggets of minutia and obscurity which you'll only hear right here on RetroZest! Dennis is joined via Zoom by photographer and director Mike Ruiz to discuss his latest project, Vanessa Williams new music video "Legs," his long friendship with Williams and how he relates to the song's theme of being fabulous at any age. Meanwhile, Dennis recalls how he once asked Vanessa Williams to dance at a Halloween party in 1986 and she said no, she was taking a break. Mike also talks about how he first fell in love with photography in his late 20's after working for years as a model. Then he recalls shooting with such A listers as Prince, Dolly Parton, Betty White, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry and most recently, Jack Reacher hunk Alan Ritchson. Other topics include: being obsessed with his dad's body-building mags when he was a kid, the perils of trying to forge friendships with celebrities, appearing on RuPaul's Drag Race, America's Next Top Model and The A List, treating his body like an art form through body building, the charity work for animals and the LGBT community, being repeatedly sexually harassed as a model, his childhood obsessions with Studio 54 and Patrick Duffy in The Man From Atlantis and why he loves to say, "Yaaassss" during his photoshoots. www.mikeruiz.com

This week on It Was a Thing on TV First, our mini-tribute to the new Aquaman cinematic release comes to an end with this series which was marine-adjacent about the last survivor from an underwater civilization. Four TV movies were made, with decent enough ratings to merit a series, one that lasted an additional 13 entries. Then, in our annual episode where you pick the topic, we gave you 3 shows from which to choose. The show with the most votes was this one, a one-season classic about an Old West bounty hunter avenging his father's death, with science fiction and steampunk elements. Finally, in 1985 and 1986, David Letterman presented two special episodes of Late Night with David Letterman around the holiday season highlighting short films by various celebrities. We analyze these short films and offer our commentary in this holiday episode of It Was a Thing on TV. Stay tuned to the end of the third episode where Greg makes an announcement regarding future drops right here on PTBN POP. Sean and Todd are back together in the studio! And what are we hitting on today? Alec Baldwin is being charged in the on-set death from his movie Rust (1:05). We offer our unprofessional opinion on the story. We talk about the Crow and Brandon Lee's death (7:31). We dip into the death of Jon-Erik Hexum and reminisce on the show Voyageurs and its star Meeno Peluce and the connection to Ronnie James Dio (19:46). What about insurance on movie sets (27:58)? Just what does that cover and what is it for? Brandon Lee's death required a whole bunch of work in post to save the film: just what did they have to do (30:36)?Voyageurs awakened the imagination of many kids in the 80's: What was this show and whatever happened to Meeno Peluce (32:48)? What were your favorite child actors of that era? (37:44) We talk about ET and it's impact on films, ensemble casts and Drew Barrymore (42:30). We reminisce about the show Buck Rogers and compare the acting to it to the film was in (48:52).Mego Toys made the coolest toys in the 70's. From Star Trek to Planet Of The Apes and various others, they were the top toy maker when we grew up (1:07:07). Others shows that captured our imagination was The Man From Atlantis (1:13:32). The problem for NBC was how to put a science-fiction show on the air without setting it in space. The solution was to set it underwater and thus "Man From Atlantis" was created and premiered on March 4, 1977. Even with TV's Patrick Duffy, top guest stars and Star Trek veterans behind the scenes, the show had a tough time staying afloat. We're creeping around a convention in Boston right now (find us at Arisia!), but we saved something special for this week's show, from a whole different convention! It's a panel from the American Sci-Fi Classics track at DragonCon 2017! Join Kevin along with Scott Viguié, Anthony Taylor, and Andrew Gaska, as they discuss... Sci-Fi TV 1977! Our science fiction options were limited back in the disco era, before a certain little movie came along and Hollywood was conquered by space ships and robots. But things were interesting in 1977, and this panel covers TV shows ranging from the classic and beloved to the obscure and problematic. Including: Space 1999, Fantasy Island, The Man From Atlantis, Logan's Run, The Amazing Spider-Man, Space Academy, Quark, Lucan (does ANYBODY remember Lucan?), and lots more. Don't you wish you could leap back 41 years and watch them all over again, on a tiny TV with poor reception and no remote? Yeah, us too...

I struck oil on the latest Nostalgia Theater show, as TV icon Patrick Duffy joins me for the hour to discuss his long career, including his start on NBC's Man From Atlantis, and his career-defining role as "good" son Bobby Ewing on CBS' long-running primetime soap Dallas. Listen as Patrick talks about how he coped with the sudden onrush of fame from the series, his lifetime friendship with J.R. Ewing himself, the late, great Larry Hagman (who passed away exactly four years ago today), and exactly what they were thinking when they put Bobby Ewing in a shower and let an entire season of Dallas continuity go down the drain. He also discusses the 2012 Dallas revival, and his feelings when he learned it had been canceled after a too-short three season run. It's a fascinating hour with a fascinating person, and I have a feeling you'll enjoy listening to it just as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.
