Herman Mashaba, President of ActionSA, joins John Maytham to discuss the party’s controversial role in helping advance South Africa’s 2025 budget process. This comes after ActionSA’s Alan Beesley introduced a recommendation backed by the ANC and IFP to find alternative revenue sources within 30 days, effectively side-lining the proposed VAT hike. While ActionSA claims it spared South Africans a cost of living blow, critics like the DA accuse it of enabling unchecked ANC spending. Mashaba unpacks the reasoning behind the move, clarifies the party’s stance on the GNU, and explains why he believes ActionSA acted in the public’s best interest.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A race war of words has been raging for days over US President Donald Trump's refugee offer to Afrikaners. ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has also been drawn into that. In this interview with BizNews, he says: “what I think I find strange is that these people who are criticizing me, insulting me actually of racism, are people who are happy when I criticize ANC corruption.” As for Trump, Mashaba says: “I think it is actually quite scary the manner and the rate at which Trump is actually taking his decisions.” Mashaba blames President Cyril Ramaphosa for not engaging, “particularly AfriForum and some of the political parties in his so-called GNU, because these are the people who went out and fed this information to Trump's advisors”. As for the role being played by Elon Musk, he says: “…this has never really happened in the history of United States where someone from outside can actually, actually looks like it's more powerful than the president himself”. Meanwhile, following some by-election defeats for former President Jacob Zuma's MKP, Mashaba holds up KZN province “a good model for democracy because it says to all of us in all the provinces that let's not be married to political parties. Let us be married to what political parties stand for. We vote them in on the basis of what they promise and they fail, next time you punish them.”
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has called for an investigation into lobby group AfriForum for “pursuing treason” after it said it would approach the US to target South African politicians on the land issue.
ActionSA has made the first move to unite the opposition ahead of municipal elections next year. Herman Mashaba's ActionSA party has merged with The Forum 4 Service Delivery, and he has confirmed that it is also in informal talks with BOSA and Rize Mzansi. “…and we've agreed to let us conclude this one first and then we can then start formal discussions with them.” Mashaba says ActionSA has identified “massive opportunities throughout the country, more especially at local government level; a lot of community-based organisations register as political parties. They're sitting with five, 10 councillors and so forth. So, I'm busy negotiating to get as many as possible to do the same kind of an arrangement that we did with The Forum 4 Service Delivery.” The first merger has gained ActionSA 38 councillors in 14 municipalities in five provinces overnight. Mashaba also gives an update on the strides made with service delivery under the new ActionSA Mayor in Tshwane.
ActionSA's President Herman Mashaba has strongly criticized the government's decision to allow undocumented foreign nationals' children to attend school without producing identification. Mashaba claims this move renders South Africa's sovereignty "null and void" and legitimizes illegality. Elvis Presslin speaks to him to elaborate further on his sentiments
Lester Kiewit speaks to Herman Mashaba the president of ActionSA about his assertion that what people once thought was a xenophobic stance on foreign owned spaza shops, is now being seen in the right light. This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation about food-related deaths after purchases at local shops. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this edition of the Sunday Show on BizNews, Neil de Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, says Deputy President Paul Mashatile - who has reaffirmed government's commitment to expropriation of land without compensation - should be hauled before court on “terrible” charges of corruption; examines the possible reasons behind the dropping of a corruption charge against former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa and lists several other cases that have been withdrawn - despite “tantamount evidence”. He gives his verdict on the war of words between ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba and political economist Phumlani M. Majozi over social media posts by the latter - and explains why he believes they are both in the wrong. He also vows to get the inside story on an apparently leaked Helen Zille video about “the ANC's manipulation (in GNU negotiations), apparently to keep international relationships and international ministries going because that's where they get most of their stuff”. Furthermore, De Beer comments on the election outcomes in Botswana - where the ruling party was peacefully ousted after 58 years in power - and in Mozambique where unrest has broken out over Frelimo's alleged rigging of the election - amid rumours that Swapo could lose the next election in Namibia.
A war of words is raging between political economist Phumlani M. Majozi and ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba. In this interview with BizNews, Majozi responds to yesterday's interview with Mashaba in which he revealed that he had consulted lawyers over social media posts made by Majozi. In our interview, we ask Majozi whether he really believes that there is “not a single black politician” in the country “who stands for basic traditional values of hard work, personal responsibility, stronger business productivity, stronger families, law and order”. We also also ask him why he labelled us at BizNews “clowns” after the Mashaba interview aired.
In this episode of BizNews NewsWrap, we delve into the heated debate surrounding capitalism and socialism, featuring insights from influential Rob Hersov, who champions the successes of capitalism, and Kevin Lings, who warns of South Africa's escalating debt crisis. We also hear from Herman Mashaba, who challenges divisive political narratives, and Phumlani Majozi, who advocates for empowering black youth to shape their futures. Join us for thought-provoking discussions tackling pressing issues affecting South Africa today.
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba is ready to take legal action over social media posts by political economist Phumlani M Majozi and some other commentators. In this interview with BizNews, he says: “…we will honestly get some of the best lawyers to put them in front of the nation to really give us evidence of the nonsense they are promoting of us as black people to really be corrupt, that we don't have values of hard work.” Mashaba's party is is also getting ready to bring a motion to get rid of former Johannesburg Mayor turned MMC Kabelo Gwamanda who is currently on special leave following his arrest over allegations of fraud. “I fail to understand why the ANC is actually failing to deal with this Gwamanda, the former mayor. Now they put him as the MMC, someone who actually cheated the poor black people in Soweto.” Furthermore, he says ActionSA is putting pressure on the ANC government to help turn around Johannesburg. He also gives an update on the governance issues in Tshwane where his party now holds the mayoral position. And he hails the return to ActionSA of dozens of formerly disgruntled activists in preparation for the 2026 municipal elections.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba speaks to BizNews about the “dirty political environment” in which Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink of the Democratic Alliance was ousted. He says the DA leadership at national level has been doing “everything possible to even threaten” the African National Congress to do the deal with them in Tshwane. “…the DA is still trying everything in their books, including actually using blackmail…and…according to the ANC, they find this to really be totally unacceptable because when they formed the GNU, there were no discussions around municipalities.” Mashaba adds: “Perhaps they even still succeed because we've got 14 days to form a new government. If the ANC is going to concede to blackmail, it's up to them.” Meanwhile, Mashaba is pushing for Deputy Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya to replace Brink. “All the credits that Cilliers Brink is seen to be doing, actually, it's a result of our deputy mayor.” If everything goes according to plan, he does, however have this warning for the ANC: “You want to work with us, you work with us at your own risk if ever you want to continue corruption because no one is going to be protected from corruption, including ActionSA members.”
Action SA says it intends on cutting its 'umbilical cord' with the DA today during a council meeting that will see Tshwane Mayor, Cilliers Brink face an ANC sponsored motion of no confidence. Party president, Herman Mashaba accuses the DA of trying to back stab the party in the back by allegedly trying to oust ActionSA from the multiparty coalition government in Tshwane through holding side talks with the ANC. Mashaba says as such, they held their own talks with the ANC and have decided to support today's motion against Brink
ActionSA Leader Herman Mashaba is set to enter negotiations for an alternative municipal coalition government in the capital Tshwane - after leaving the Multi-Party Coalition with the Democratic Alliance. In this interview with BizNews, Mashaba states: “The only thing that is now left is whether ActionSA will be able to put together a new government with other parties that subscribe to our values of fighting corruption, focus on service delivery to the residents of Tshwane, and ethical leadership. If we can pass this, then we'll be able to really form a new government with other parties without the DA. But in the event we fail - because we are not going to go into an arrangement with other parties for the sake of going - we've taken a decision that come the 26th, ActionSA is happy and comfortable...to really be on the opposition benches.” While Mashaba stresses that he is not going to be “unreasonable”, he is also adamant that he is fully prepared to “walk away” in the event that parties don't agree. “I think the only thing I'm asking the ANC to do is that, guys, if you're going to co-govern with us, we've got to declare corruption public enemy number one. We've got to put in professional people to run our government. We've got to save all communities, suburbs, townships, villages.” As for the DA, he states: “…one thing that we want to make clear to South Africans is that the DA coalition in Tshwane can forget about getting the support from our councillors in Tshwane.”
In this second edition of the BizNews Briefing, host Alec Hogg takes us through the business news of the day, markets and contributions from Kokkie Kooyman, Frans Cronje, Herman Mashaba and more
ActionSA has severed ties with the DA in Tshwane, leaving City mayor Cillier Brink's future in jeopardy. Party leader Herman Mashaba announced the decision at ActionSA's Gauteng Provincial Imbizo in Tshwane's Saulsville Arena over the weekend. Mashaba attributed ActionSA's disappointing election results to the Multi-Party Charter, criticizing the alliance's effectiveness. He also hinted that ActionSA councillors would support a vote of no confidence against Mayor Brink. To elaborate on the possible political bearing this may have on Mayor Brink, Elvis Presslin spoke to Kwena Moloto, Spokesperson for the DA Caucus in Tshwane
Not quite a year and a half into recovery, the Tshwane Metro is again on the brink of descending into chaos. In this interview, Tshwane's executive mayor, Cilliers Brink, unpacks why this is happening. He says the national leaders of Action SA, specifically its founder/president Herman Mashaba, are imposing their will on the party's members in the capital city. Action SA, with 19 seats, is currently in coalition with the DA (69), Freedom Front Plus (17) and a few smaller parties in the group governing the 214-member council. Taken to its logical conclusion, Mashaba's decision to withdraw Action SA from a functional alliance will re-introduce an ANC/EFF “doomsday coalition”. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.
ActionSA Leader Herman Mashaba has the country talking as the residents of the capital Tshwane are anxiously awaiting his call on a possible coalition with the African National Congress (ANC) - after it entered into a working relationship with the ANC in Joburg, and is eyeing a similar deal in Ekurhuleni next. Speaking to BizNews from New York, Mashaba describes how - when he became aware of the Democratic Alliance (DA) trying to get the ANC to work with it in Tshwane, and remove ActionSA, he realised he was dealing with “very dangerous people”. On the other hand, he says the ANC is committed to the two parties holding each other accountable. “I know I'm dealing with a DA that will stab me without any doubt. So I've got to protect myself. Let me try other options available to me. But one thing is certain… if I don't really protect myself from being eliminated by the DA, I've got to look at other options. They might not really be ideal, but at least they're not going to look me in the face, but stab me at the back.”
ActionSA President Herman Mashaba is ready to walk away from a deal with the African National Congress (ANC) in the City of Johannesburg if his party does not get the Speaker's position in the council. This after the ANC has so far failed to make an announcement following Sunday's handshake deal. “…we are not going to be in a marriage of convenience… If they want to wait another month or so, they are the ones who are going to suffer. And we are not going to wait forever because if the City reaches a stage where it cannot really be turned around, we will not really participate…One thing for sure, I know that the voters of Johannesburg are going to punish them, punish them even further on what they've done in the previous elections.” Mashaba points out that ActionSA would not be able to hold the ANC accountable if it did not “take the Legislature”. However, should the ANC honour its undertaking, Mashaba shares a list of the programmes for immediate implementation. Meanwhile, giving an update on his party's fight against illegal immigration, Mashaba vows: “…we're not going to let the new Minister under this coalition arrangement to do what the ANC did over the last 30 years…open our borders.”
Tshidi Madia speaks to TK Nciza, the ANC Gauteng Provincial Secretary, Herman Mashaba, the Action SA leader and Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku the leader of DA Caucus in Johannesburg about the resignation of the mayor of Joburg, Kabelo Gwamanda.
Action SA founder and leader Herman Mashaba has shown pretty much anything is possible in South Africa's new-look political arena. This week the man who has maintained a virulently anti-ANC stance, turned pragmatic by striking a deal with his avowed rival - in the interests, he says, of breaking the destructive stalemate in Johannesburg, the country's largest and richest city. He argues that Action SA's previously unthinkable arrangement with the ANC is in everyone's best interests. Mashaba spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

Additionally, ACTIONSA is scheduled to hold a press briefing today to discuss their Senate outcomes related to the City of Johannesburg. Self-made entrepreneur turned politician Herman Mashaba shares some uber truths in this interview with BizNews editor Alec Hogg - including deep concerns about his predecessor as Joburg Mayor taking over the key Trade & Industry portfolio. The way Mashaba sees it, the T&I job is way beyond the competency of ANC stalwart Parks Tao whose mess Mashaba inherited in Joburg. That R35bn in corrupt deals which Tao either didn't, couldn't or wouldn't see.

ActionSA founder Herman Mashaba, was shocked at the way South Africans voted on May 29, but will not leave the political arena. Instead, the successful entrepreneur and former Joburg Mayor will be doubling down on a dream his nation will abandon race-driven political choices that shaped Election'24. However, the Black Like Me mogul admits to being “very nervous” about the outcome of coalition negotiations, fretting about the ability of the many “dishonest” politicians who're involved to counter SA's existential threat of a destructive MK. Action-SA leader, Herman Masheba says the recent election results are concerning as they reflect what he terms as 'politics of identity'. Mashaba received 1.2 percent of the national votes with just under 200-thousand votes which results in four seats in Parliament. Mashaba briefed the media a short while ago where he also confirmed that he will not be part of the party's members of parliament. Mashaba has also expressed shock at reports that the DA has been in talks with the ANC when it comes to a coalition government...
Self-made business mogul turned politician Herman Mashaba, is confident Action SA will be the surprise package of South Africa's 2024 National and Provincial elections. He says hard work over the past three years; a campaign that resonates with all races; and a God-centred approach is set to catapult ActionSA from its excellent debut in 2021 into major player this year. He is aiming high - countering poor poll showings with on-the-ground feedback from the party's 320 000 activists suggesting even third place (behind the ANC and DA) would be “a disappointing result”. The DA should have burnt the ANC flag instead of the national flag, says ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says in a wide-ranging interview on the Sunday Times Politics Weekly podcast. The party stirred controversy earlier this week when it launched its election campaign advertisement showing the national flag in flames. The DA has defended the advert, with federal chair Helen Zille saying the alternative to being rescued is dying. The party's election slogan is “Unite to rescue South Africa”. Asked about his ambitions, Mashaba said: “Being president of the country or being a premier are the last jobs I want, but I am committed to finding a solution to our country's problems.” He said he blames former president Thabo Mbeki for many of the country's problems, saying his advice proved to be “disastrous” and “he's got the experience of destroying”. Mashaba told podcast host Mike Siluma that ActionSA has proposed renaming eThekwini after the late Mangosuthu Buthelezi. He also discussed his party's plans for economic recovery and immigration. Mashaba sê Moeng is een van talle gerespekteerde Suid-Afrikaners wat die afgelope maande by ActionSA aangesluit het.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says on-the-ground feedback reflects a very different Election'24 picture to one propagated by incumbents and the media. He points to ActionSA's double digit vote shares in rural by-elections complementing its widely acknowledged strong position in urban areas, especially Soweto where he reckons the party dominates. Mashaba predicts South Africans will punish the chaotic ANC/EFF coalitions; says the DA will lose its Western Cape majority and is making a strategic error shunning the Patriotic Alliance and its leader Gayton McKenzie.
Action SA leader Herman Mashaba paints a grim picture of what a future South Africa will look like if the African National Congress (ANC) is not unseated in this year's historic national elections. He predicts that the country will become a failed State - and says Zimbabwe will look like a Sunday school picnic by comparison. He speaks to BizNews after yet another fire gutted yet another hijacked building in Johannesburg where failing infrastructure has also resulted in gas explosions and excessive flood damage. “…if this government is elected back into power in South Africa, then we must accept it's going to become… another failed African state…I can assure you, when we fail, Zimbabwe will look like a Sunday school picnic.”

This is an interview in two parts with former Joburg Metro mayor and Action SA leader Herman Mashaba expressing his frustration in equal measure. First we discuss the tragic fire at 80 Albert Street in Marshalltown, once the commercial hub of the African continent, which killed 77 of those who lived in the decrepit building. Mashaba revisits a successful mayoral project designed to reclaim hundreds of hijacked CBD buildings - but which was reversed into criminality after his ejection by what he claims was an unholy alliance between the ANC and his own party at the time, the DA. Mashaba then shares duplicity that is bedevilling a potentially promising project by opposition parties, the Multi Party Charter of SA - and explains why, despite this, Action SA hasn't left the pact. There is a crisis of leadership amongst South Africa's ego-driven politicians who are not serving the people with “character, caring, competence, commitment, and connectedness”. This has emerged from an interview with Leadership Diagnostician Dr. Albert Wort of the University of Johannesburg (UJ). In this edition of In The Ring, I analyse Prince Mashele's responses in interviews granted to eNCA, 702 and the SABC, in light of media reports that he had, ok the face of it, been dishonest about the nature of his biography of Herman Mashaba. Herman Mashaba is leader of politica part ActionSA, and prior to that was always known as a very successful businessman in an against-all-odds tale at the height of apartheid; in recent years he a new career pivot that had also seen him becoming mayor of Johannesburg.Mashele, a well-known South African political analyst, had claimed that he had "self-funded" his book on Mashaba, and the subtitle of the book declared it to be "unauthorised".It has emerged that Mashaba had provided funding for the book, and had engaged the author on drafts of the chapter. This raises sharp ethical questions: was the work unauthorised or authtoised ? Did Mashele lie on eNCA? Did Mashele WRONGLY withheld the information from Jonathan Ball ? What, most importantly, are the consequences for the professional integrity of the author? And what are we to make of the other actors in this drama: the subject; the publisher; the researcher/former best friend Brutus Malada who 'blew the whistle'?Have a listen to my uhm unauthorised take.

In this edition of In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser, I voice an essay I had written for TimesLIVE in which I critique the bullshit idea that race-based affirmative action policies are racist, and also slay the myth of meritocracy that make many white people falsely claim that their economic successes are due to hard work and fair play. There is a cluster of explicit and hidden premises in these positions that are popular despite being spectacularly false and fallacious. Have a listen.
