Sara-Jayne Makwala King speaks to South African musician Majozi about his forthcoming tour.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this edition of the Sunday Show on BizNews, Neil de Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, says Deputy President Paul Mashatile - who has reaffirmed government's commitment to expropriation of land without compensation - should be hauled before court on “terrible” charges of corruption; examines the possible reasons behind the dropping of a corruption charge against former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa and lists several other cases that have been withdrawn - despite “tantamount evidence”. He gives his verdict on the war of words between ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba and political economist Phumlani M. Majozi over social media posts by the latter - and explains why he believes they are both in the wrong. He also vows to get the inside story on an apparently leaked Helen Zille video about “the ANC's manipulation (in GNU negotiations), apparently to keep international relationships and international ministries going because that's where they get most of their stuff”. Furthermore, De Beer comments on the election outcomes in Botswana - where the ruling party was peacefully ousted after 58 years in power - and in Mozambique where unrest has broken out over Frelimo's alleged rigging of the election - amid rumours that Swapo could lose the next election in Namibia.
A war of words is raging between political economist Phumlani M. Majozi and ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba. In this interview with BizNews, Majozi responds to yesterday's interview with Mashaba in which he revealed that he had consulted lawyers over social media posts made by Majozi. In our interview, we ask Majozi whether he really believes that there is “not a single black politician” in the country “who stands for basic traditional values of hard work, personal responsibility, stronger business productivity, stronger families, law and order”. We also also ask him why he labelled us at BizNews “clowns” after the Mashaba interview aired.
In this episode of BizNews NewsWrap, we delve into the heated debate surrounding capitalism and socialism, featuring insights from influential Rob Hersov, who champions the successes of capitalism, and Kevin Lings, who warns of South Africa's escalating debt crisis. We also hear from Herman Mashaba, who challenges divisive political narratives, and Phumlani Majozi, who advocates for empowering black youth to shape their futures. Join us for thought-provoking discussions tackling pressing issues affecting South Africa today.
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba is ready to take legal action over social media posts by political economist Phumlani M Majozi and some other commentators. In this interview with BizNews, he says: “…we will honestly get some of the best lawyers to put them in front of the nation to really give us evidence of the nonsense they are promoting of us as black people to really be corrupt, that we don't have values of hard work.” Mashaba's party is is also getting ready to bring a motion to get rid of former Johannesburg Mayor turned MMC Kabelo Gwamanda who is currently on special leave following his arrest over allegations of fraud. “I fail to understand why the ANC is actually failing to deal with this Gwamanda, the former mayor. Now they put him as the MMC, someone who actually cheated the poor black people in Soweto.” Furthermore, he says ActionSA is putting pressure on the ANC government to help turn around Johannesburg. He also gives an update on the governance issues in Tshwane where his party now holds the mayoral position. And he hails the return to ActionSA of dozens of formerly disgruntled activists in preparation for the 2026 municipal elections.

The outcome of the historic 2024 elections has its roots in the rift between the camps of former President Jacob Zuma and current President Cyril Ramaphosa that formed after the NASCREC conference in 2017. In this interview with BizNews, macroeconomic and political analyst Phumlani M. Majozi, who is also the author of “Lessons from Past Heroes”, explains the strategy followed by Zuma, an avid chess player. He describes how Zuma came to view the Ramaphosa faction as a group of people who were after him and who mistreated him. “And up it went and went and went and went up until to a point where Zuma said, I guess as a chess player himself, he said, I'm going to strategise it. I need to hurt these people in the 2024 election. And that is what exactly happened. ” Majozi describes how Zuma used his huge support in KZN, a province that his very popularity won for the ANC, to fight back against the ANC. He shares his theories on Zuma's end game and the benefits the former president likely wants from regaining “an influence in how things go in governance”. Majozi examines the factors that will determine the future of the ANC and Ramaphosa, and outlines the coalition formation needed to push the ANC into pro-market, pro-growth policies. He also examines the future of democracy in South Africa post May 29.

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Diversified mining company African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) is supporting postdoctoral research into water, energy and digitalisation at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg. The investment is firmly located within the university's mining precinct and dovetails with the university's broader initiatives in quantum computing, fintech and innovation. ARM will sponsor a R20-million endowment, which will be invested in perpetuity. The investment return on the endowment will be used to support research in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The ARM postgraduate fellowship programme aims to develop a critical mass of skills in South Africa through supporting a new cohort of postdoctoral fellows specialising in water resource management, digitalisation, and work towards a Just Energy Transition. ARM founder and executive chairperson, Dr Patrice Motsepe, a Wits alumnus, described partnering with South African institutions of higher learning as being of paramount importance. "Public-private partnerships are crucial in addressing the socio-economic and environmental challenges confronting our communities and country," Motsepe emphasised. "ARM works with several universities across South Africa, supporting young people from undergraduate to post-graduate studies, helping them to realise their dreams," said Motsepe. "Some of these students come from communities neighbouring our mining operations. We also contribute to the development and upliftment of poor rural and urban communities in South Africa by educating students from these communities," Motsepe added. Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, in a release to Mining Weekly, recognised the importance of digital transformation in the mining industry, and the necessity to develop the critical skills needed to advance South Africa's economy. Vilakazi expressed confidence that through more private sector partnerships such as the ARM partnership, Wits could help to make a major contribution to the development of the critical skills and research needed to secure long-term mining industry sustainability. Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment Dean, Professor Thokozani Majozi, highlighted the need for urgency in transitioning to a more sustainable and just energy system. "Research and promotion of accessible, affordable, and socio-economically just renewable energy solutions are our top priorities," said Majozi, who reiterated the university's aim to contribute to the sustainable management of water resources through research, education, increased awareness and community engagement. "This includes addressing challenges related to water scarcity, pollution and climate change," he added. ARM CEO Phillip Tobias described the postdoctoral fellowship programme as testament to ARM's commitment to addressing critical challenges in water, energy and digitalisation. "This initiative is about creating a pipeline of future critical skills that will cater for future business needs. We believe that through this collaboration, we can make a significant impact and leave a lasting legacy that will provide innovative and sustainable solutions that will benefit not only the mining industry but broader South African society as well," Tobias said. The ARM Wits partnership has resulted in the current Chamber of Mines Building on the Braamfontein West Campus, facing the M1 highway, being renamed the Wits ARM Building, an edifice which is a central component of the university's academic and research infrastructure. Opened in 1989 with the fourth quadrant completed in 2012, the building houses the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment's administration, the School of Mining Engineering, and the School of Electrical and Information Engineering. It is also home to the multidisciplinary Wits Mining Institute, DigiMine, and two other research entities.

Should South Africans be concerned about the terrorist insurgence in Mozambique? Why is Ramaphosa only reshuffling his cabinet now? Should Zuma campaign for the ANC? Has the lockdown negatively affected the ANC's image? What is the cause of fatherlessness in the black community? What does one need to do in order to avoid or escape poverty? Dumo and Phumlani Majozi unpack these questions. Socials | Website | Shop
Majozi has new music out! Called ‘Close To You’– the song continues the beautiful love story that Majozi has been taking us on, since the days of ‘Waiting’. He’s even using the teddy bear from his 2nd anniversary with partner, Daniella, as the mascot for the song. On Saturday, 2 April 2021, Majozi joined Carl Wastie on the Kfm Top 40 to find out more about the new single, as well as to find out how his Spanish lessons were going (as his previous single, 'Falling', references getting better at Spanish). One week following the release of his latest single, 'Falling', Majozi's ultimate love song debuted on the Kfm Top 40 at no.33 on Saturday, 14 November 2020. What many don't know: when he was in-studio the week prior to promote the new single (Saturday, 7 November 2020), Majozi mentioned to Carl Wastie off-air that he loved how Jethro Tait's mom surprised him with the news when 'Dreams' first charted... and so an idea was born... The award-winning Kfm Top 40 with Carl Wastie hatched a plan to surprise Majozi in a similar fashion, should 'Falling' ever make its way onto the chart. Thanks to all your love - from requests on Kfm 94.5 to streams via your favourite reputable streaming service - the song made its way onto the Kfm Top 40 with Carl Wastie in the course of one week and so "Mission: Surprise Majozi" was given the green light and started work. As 'Falling' was written as a love song for his long-term girlfriend, Daniela, who has recently undergone her own a battle with mental health (and now an advocate for making the subject of mental health less taboo) - Carl Wastie enlisted the help of Daniela to break the news to Majozi. Meanwhile, Majozi was advised that Carl had made a remix of the song that he wanted him to hear... when it came to playing the remix though, Daniela's voice came the air to congratulate her partner on making it onto the chart - in what was a beautiful, tear-jerking moment that you have to hear to feel... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Inspired by his girlfriend’s journey with mental health, ‘Falling’ is the latest offering from Majozi, who’s also in the jersey business now - having created 100 jerseys that he's shared with fans, friends and family alike. On Saturday, 7 November 2020, Majozi joined Carl Wastie in-studio on the Kfm Top 40 for a quick chat about ‘Falling’, which he hopes will bring joy to those who relate to it. But as he does, Majozi arrived with a guitar in hand, so instead of playing the actual single, Carl Wastie got the Cape Town pop/folk singer to perform his latest single on the multiple award-winning chart show. Carl also tested Majozi's music knowledge... to see how many of his own songs he knows! How many is that? Listen to find out... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Majozi is one of South Africa's most beloved indie-pop singer-songwriters. Straight out of Durban, this musician wears his lyrical heart on his sleeve, quite literally, with his tattoos dedicated to his faith and to his mother – two defining aspects of his life that feature heavily in the music that he writes. His music is also refreshingly sincere and he has crafted heartfelt hit songs like “Fire” and “Darling” and “Falling” that artfully portray his uplifting perspective of the world around him, something that we all need a good dose of during these strange days. From his ever-changing journey alongside his record label, to soundtracking many a South African wedding, to his latest merch line that gives back to communities reeling from Covid-19, Majozi is your nice guy for every occasion with a burgeoning music career to boot. Majozi is a musician who first shot to fame in 2015 with his debut pop hit "Fire", although he originally started his music career playing in punk and metalcore bands with friends from school and church. While you may know him from the radio, I know Majozi from the moshpit which I think makes this a rather enlightening interview. In this episode, we reminisce about Majozi's early days in the Durban punk and hardcore scene before getting into the pressures that come with being a full-time musician on a major label. We learn about how crucial the church was in Majozi finding confidence in himself and also how important the support has been in his success. We also have a few laughs over him getting flooded with messages intended for Sho Madjozi and how he saw her rise through his Google Alerts. It's a fun and informative chat, enjoy. https://almostperfect.co.za/ep-65-majozi/
