Buen verano.

Today we're sharing a delightful conversation that we recently had with Jimbo Mathus, a one-of-a-kind musician from North Mississippi. Back in March, Jimbo teamed up with his old bandmate Andrew Bird to release a new record called These 13, a record about the special type of human connection that can survive any distance of time or geography. As former collaborators in Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mathus and Bird's friendship dates back 25 years, and they decided to reunite to record thirteen songs live to analog tape, singing and playing opposite of each other right into an RCA 44 microphone. Jimbo shared great details about the making of that album, and a lot more, and we can't wait for you to hear. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew Bird and Jimbo Mathus have known each other for decades, going back to the beginning of Bird's solo career and Mathus' earliest days with Squirrel Nut Zippers. Most of their work together has been assistive—Bird would add his fiddle to the Zippers' records, and Mathus would return the favor with some horns. But a couple of years back, the old friends decided to write some songs together, and the result is These 13, a truly collaborative album featuring just their voices, guitar, and fiddle, for the most part. It's spare and surprising. In this Talkhouse conversation, they chat about the old days and the new, as well as a shared love of Charley Patton. Enjoy. —Josh Modell, Executive Editor This episode was produced by Kevin O'Connell. The Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.

This is an encore presentation of Alex Rawls' interview with Jimbo Mathus of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. It first appeared late last March as an accidental loosey, and Mathus, the Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Christmas Caravan, and their conversation deserve more attention than they got at the time. The band was at the height of its popularity in 1998 when it recorded Christmas Caravan at the request of their label. Even though no one in the band felt particularly excited by Christmas music, it made a memorable one that includes “Hanging Up My Stockings,” a song written by a band members’ parents. Mathus talks about the experience of recording that album, and recording a Christmas single, “Mardi Gras for Christmas,” in 2018 with the current, New Orleans-based Squirrel Nut Zippers lineup.
Larry Morrisey catches up with musician Jimbo Mathus. He is currently touring to promote Incinerator, his latest album. The record pulls together songs that Mathus has written throughout his career and features a number of guest musicians, including Andrew Bird and Lily Hiatt. Larry spoke to Mathus on location at Duling Hall in Jackson, prior to the concert that evening. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, Grammy award winning Mississippi singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and Squirrel Nut Zippers co-founder Jimbo Mathus with his “Kinfolks” recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with this musical Mississippi maverick. Jimbo Mathus is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his work with the swing revival band Squirrel Nut Zippers. Born in Oxford, Mississippi to Jimmy Mathus and Jeanella (Malvezzi) Mathus, his early life was filled with music as his father and relatives were skilled instrumentalists and singers. He began joining the family musical circle at an early age and by age eight was proficient at mandolin. By age fifteen, Jimbo had been taught the rudiments of guitar, piano and harmony singing. The family's repertoire consisted of hundreds of folk, bluegrass, country blues and pre-recorded songs passed down through the Mathus and Byrd families. “Jimbo Mathus & Kinfolks” is a project that takes Jimbo back to his earliest musical roots. Alongside lifelong friend and mentor Jimmy “Buck” Bennett on dobro, Steve Butler on fiddle, Ernie Welch guitar, and Steve Craig on bass, “Kinfolks” recreates the family and social music gatherings of Jimbo’s youth. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of banjo Jedi Jimmy Connor performing the tune “Old Ed Setser,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. From his series entitled “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the curious story of Katy Heidi, a woman of Austrian nobility who became a lifelong transplant to the early Missouri Ozarks.

Previously, on Sidequest Episode 2, most of the crew of the Drunken Mynock were relaxing back on their asteroid base in the Socorro sector. It had been a hectic few days, filled with adventure, danger and mroe danger, and they were enjoying their time off. Mathus had received a message from a contact on Tatooine, letting him know his old mentor, Honwoo, was being accosted by local thugs. Accompanied by Lowrick, the madcap wookie, and Jerry, the even crazier assassin droid, Mathus returns home for the first time since they blew up Teemo the Hutt and escaped with Trex's YT-1300 light freighter. After finding out that Thresh and his gang are living on a farmstead a few hours outside of town, the gang decides to ambush his men as they return home from a cantina late at night. The ambush is going off without a hitch, as Lowrick's well-placed grenade put one of their speeders out of commission and their blades do the rest of the work. Unfortunately, it seems that Mathus has angered a Gundark, which has taken a special dislike to Mathus's R5 droid Eco...
Previously, on Sidequest Episode 1, our heroes were taking a much-deserved break on their asteroid station in the Socorro sector when they received a holo message from Tatooine. Mathus's old mentor Honwoo was being shaken down by local thugs and criminals who had popped up in the vacuum of Teemo's death. Feeling doubly responsible, Mathus, Lowrick and Jerry flew the Drunken Mynock to Mos Shuuta, a small town a few hours drive from Mos Eisley. There, they found Honwoo hurt but alive, victim of a vicious beating delivered by Thresh, a local gang leader who claimed ties to Jabba. Not wanting to upset Jabba if he was indeed on the Hutt's payroll, our heroes loudly asked around in the local cantina and found a Twi'Lek who was eager to throw Thresh to the wolves. After discovering his gang's whereabouts, the crew went back to Honwoo's in order to upgrade their equipment for the fight ahead. Mathus, working closely with Honwoo, flawlessly improved Lowrick's Vibro-Axe, Jerry's Vibro-Rapier and Mathus's shock gloves. Ready for whatever is to come, the group watches the double suns set over Tatooine and think of revenge.
In Season 1 of Star Wars: Beyond the Edge, our heroes have managed to finally leave the planet of Naboo after a number of harrowing adventures. The crew of the Drunken Mynock discovered that the sinister cult operating on Naboo was actually the front for an Imperial research facility until it was taken over by a crazed force-wielding cult leader. The cult had kidnapped a number of orphans, who after being rescued were promptly kidnapped again, this time by shady Imperials! After dealing with stormtroopers and a sociopathic governor, the crew was taken aboard a star destroyer and interrogated by the Imperial Security Bureau. Finally returning home, they discovered their asteroid station under attack, and swiftly murdered the would-be invaders. With their asteroid base safely under their control, our heroes finally have some time to relax and expand their ever-growing criminal empire. Their relaxation is soon interrupted by a holographic message for Mathus, from an old friend on Tatooine...
Previously, on Episode 12, the crew of the Drunken Mynock arrived at their asteroid base in the socorro system only to discover it was under attack by unknown assailants. As the assassin Droid Jerry deftly piloted the Drunken Mynock through the asteroid field, mechanic Mathus began repairing damage while wookie warrior and Opera singer Lowrick inspired the crew. Kader ran and Sasha, flying their starfighters, engaged the enemy ships and blew a number of them to pieces before taking a scout ship captive. As they dock inside their hangar Bay, the crew prepares to assault the assaulters.
Previously, on Episode 10, the crew of the Drunken Mynock had been taken aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Rentless after rescuing a group of orphaned children on Naboo! While waiting in a conference room aboard the enormous starship, Mathus quietly sliced into the ship’s systems while the rest of the group discussed their precarious situation. After being politely interrogated by Imperial Security Bureau agent Jaden Cross about their actions on the planet below, our heroes were left to ponder their fate.
Previously, on Episode 8, the crew of the Drunken Mynock raced through the forests of Naboo in pursuit of the local governor and the kidnapped children. After disabling the Stormtroopers landspeeders and bravely stunning the children unconscious, our heroes confronted the shaken troopers. While Mathus and Sasha are busy saving the orphans, Jerry and Kader Rhan duel a scout trooper pilot on speeder bikes. Can Jerry and Kader Rhan defeat a well trained Imperial pilot? Do Sasha and Mathus have what it takes to take on a squad of stormtroopers and survive?
In Episode 2, Mathus, Sasha and Jerry were shopping on Naboo when an ion bomb exploded in a market. After giving chase to a pair of robed figures, a quick brawl erupted in an alley, with our heroes leaving victorious. A local security agent has promised to meet them back at their ship, as there is a potential reward for anyone who is daring enough to put an end to the cultists. Our band of brigands regroups at their ship, the Drunken Mynock, as Pash, the drug-addled smuggler, Lowrick, the always-angry Wookie and Vex, the fretful medical droid rejoin the party.
S1E2 ‘Klaatu…Barada…Nikto’ In Episode 1, Mathus, Sasha and Jerry wandered into a large open air marketplace on Naboo when a massive blast rocks the market. A large ion bomb exploded outside the local Naboo security garrison, sending our heroes flying and seriously injuring a number of people. Mathus helped Jerry regain his footing (and remove some tar) while Sasha gave first aid to a family nearby. Spotting a couple of red-robed figures running away with Naboo security in pursuit, the group chases after them. After a furious fistfight, the group discovers the cult of Nikto is active on Naboo and is hiding out nearby. A security agent arrives and explains that while they have complained numerous times to the local imperial garrison, nothing has been done about the cult – he suggests the locals would be very generous if the group is able to root out the cultists, and offers to meet them at their ship with some weapon permits later on. Please feel free to comment, like or subscribe to RSD’s podcasts.
Having finalized their agreement with the leader of a criminal organization on Socorro, the group decided to shore up their cash reserves by answering a call from Anata, Jabba’s contact and spy on Tattooine. Anata had a lead on the credits that some of Teemo’s old henchmen had stolen when the group had blown up his palace, and everyone decided to kill two birds with one stone by pleasing Jabba and taking a cut of the credits. With rumours that Teemo’s Kubaz spy, Thweek, had stolen the credits, they tracked him down to his family home on Naboo. The group split up, with the medical droid Vex, angry wookie Lowhhrick and smuggler Pash heading after Thweek, while their mechanic, Mathus, assassin droid Jerry and scout Sasha went to the marketplace for supplies. Vex managed to get the location of Thweek’s family summer home, on the edge of a nearby forest, from Thweek’s mother and using other clues found the location in short order. After managing to talk down Thweek from within the cottage, Vex and the group convinced him to join their crew and give over the credits, in exchange for protection against those that were chasing him. They came to the arrangement just as another group of Teemo’s former thugs showed up looking for the credits – they fought the group off, killing half of them before the rest surrendered. Meanwhile, Mathus, Sasha and Jerry wander into the large open air market and begin heading towards the equipment and weapon stalls when a massive blast rocks the market…
