It's been over a week of the 16 playoff team format. How has this format worked and has it been enjoyable for us? We discuss the ways it helps, how it has hurt, and if this is something that works for the consumer of baseball. Next, we dive into the shakeup the Pirates front office saw this past week. Then lastly, we discuss the departure of JT Riddle as well as the retirement of Francisco Cervelli.
Francisco Cervelli is retiring after a 13-year career. Cervelli was an above-average player, but a long string of injuries (mostly concussions) nagged him throughout his career. The Phillies are getting a new GM. It's been a disappointing two years in Philadelphia as they are still seeking a return to October. All this (and more) on today's episode.

The Pirates have yet again stumbled out of the All-Star break after getting swept by the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley this weekend, and it doesn't get easier as the Bucs head to St. Louis for another pivotal divisional series. What if we told you in the offseason that going into the break the Pirates would be 2.5 games out of 1st place? Well we answer that for you, though it may not be as glorious of an answer as it was in 2015.Also, we thank everyone again for their contribution to the NS9 Pirates Charities Backpack Raffle where we collected $2,250 and were able to raffle off 9 backpacks. We also talk about the revamping of our Patreon where you can help support us while getting some pretty cool things in return.Onto more baseball...The Pirates hammered the Brewers & Cubs this past week and have played very well since June and this rough stretch vs teams above .500 (and likely with higher run differentials and Ivan Nova's pitching for them). What does this mean for the club and should they be buyers or sellers if the trade deadline were today?Josh Bell and Felipe Vazquez will be heading to Cleveland to partake in the All Star game, while Josh Bell will also be part of the Home Run Derby. Ryan & DiNardo give their predictions on the event. Francisco Cervelli has announced that he will no longer play catcher in his MLB career. As we all know the person comes before the player (and this is a very wise move for Cervelli's health concerns) what does this mean for the Pirates? Where is Cervelli's place on this team going forward and what does it mean to the current players on the 25 man right now?Are the Wolves of Federal Street back? The bullpen has been pitching better lately, but we aren't certain it's at the level we all expected them to be at. Who has surprisingly been much better lately? Worse? We will tell you what we can likely expect from this unit going forward and if there is any more help on the way.If you feel generous enough, you can check out our Patreon below:www.patreon.com/northshorenineMakes sure to check us out on twitch for NS9LIVE Thursdays at 10PMwww.twitch.tv/northshorenineAlso, check out our website for all of the podcasts, live streams, merchandise, free graphics & phone wallpapers, & more:www.northshorenine.com

The Pirates didn’t get off to the start they hoped for on Thursday dropping a 5-3 loss on the road to the Reds. Jose Iglesias opened the game’s scoring with a double to bring home Jose Peraza in the second inning. It would take the Pirates until the 6th inning to get on the board when a Jung Ho Kang single brought in Josh Bell and Francisco Cervelli, thanks to some very aggressive base coaching by Joey Cora. However, the Reds would hit a pair of home runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a 5-2 lead and ultimately end the game. The Pirates were able to tack on one more run in the 8th and threatened with the bases loaded in the 9th, but it wouldn’t be enough. WRSP Radio presents the final episode of Weekend Sports Huddle from WRSP Radio with co-hosts Tom Pollin, Hunter Hodies and producer Dave Holcomb. While the Chicago Cubs trounced rival St. Louis on Friday night, the Cubs lost their first series versus the Milwaukee Brewers this week and dropped into second place in the NL Central. Pollin will explain what happened in the two shutout losses for Chicago versus Milwaukee. Right after discussing the young hitter struggles for the Pittsburgh Pirates last week, manager Clint Hurdle dropped Gregory Polanco and Josh Bell in the batting order. Can a Pirates club with Corey Dickerson and Francisco Cervelli batting third and fourth, respectively, find ways to score enough runs to win games despite a struggling pitching staff? Behindthesteelcurtain.com brings you the Black and Gold tonight at 9:00PM with Christopher Carter and Jeff Hartman as your hosts. Tonight's show reviews an amazing turnaround of a season for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they looked like they would miss the playoffs at the halfway point, but turned it around and became the best team in hockey to win their fourth Stanley Cup. You can call in to listen to the show or join us to celebrate by dialing 347-850-8581. The Pittsburgh Steelers inch closer to training camp and the team is pitting their new recruits at defensive backs up against their outstanding wide receiver group to test their abilities early. Meanwhile offensive coordinator Todd Haley says reiterates the 30 points per game goal for the Steelers' offense and we talk why or why not that's realistic. The Steelers also saw their second player mentioned on the NFL Network's Top 100 list in Le'Veon Bell at 41. We talk about his ranking and where we expect others to fall. While the City of Champions celebrates the Penguins, the Pittsburgh Pirates' struggles continue as they have now lost five in a row and dropped to third place in the NL Central with a 32-31 record, all while losing catcher Francisco Cervelli until the all-star break due to injury. Jeff goes off on the Pirates over their woes. The duo wrap up the show with a SeaWolves shout out that looks at the upcoming schedule, the Akron RubberDucks, Dean Green destroying baseball's for the Wolves, and JaCoby Jones returning to the SeaWolves' lineup.

While snow fell in Kansas City, the Royals were busy getting spring training underway and taking the field against the rest of the Cactus League. We did our best not to overreact to the action so far, but did discuss Luis Mendoza's potential as a starter, John Lamb's comeback and velocity (as well as that of Noel Arguelles) and Alex Gordon's day off. Then we welcomed the voice of Kauffman Stadium to the show. Mike McCartney's a name you might not know but if you get to see the Royals at home, you'll know his voice. We caught up with him to talk about the All Star break, his philosophy behind how to work within the game and the crowd in calling up a player, what he does with the weird names (and we tested a few with him), and what it's like to work at the ballpark all summer. After a brief interlude to talk about the Chiefs and their search for a quarterback (we try not to go there unless it's a big story), we talked with Elliot Johnson, the newest Royal in camp. Johnson shared a lot about his climb towards the big leagues, including the disappointments of being kept in the minors, bad timing, and his dustup with Francisco Cervelli (and he had a nice take on the overreaction to that 2008 collision). He also talked about the leadership the Royals should expect from former-and-once-again teammates James Shields and Wade Davis as well as his adjustment to a new clubhouse and coaching staff and playing every position on the diamond.
Alex recaps the first 2 games of 3 against the Yankees and asks the question, "why does this rivalry not have the same juice it used to have?" Is it because winning the AL East means virtually nothing, or is it more than that? The top storylines from the first two games, including John Lackey vs. Francisco Cervelli are touched upon too. Today is September 1st which means that rosters expand. Who will be activated for the Red Sox? How will Terry Francona handle the roster throughout September? How will he balance winning the division with doing the right thing for getting the team prepared for success in the playoffs? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex shares more of his thoughts on a "division race" that doesn't really matter. Andy MacPhail possibly leaving the Orioles, as well as what looks to be a rather dull September across baseball are talked about as well. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards...participate in the show! Signing up to the message boards is free, quick, and easy. Schedule notes: "The Alex Reimer Show" returns to the airwaves on Saturday 9/10 from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM 900 AM Nashua, 1250 AM Manchester, and www.wgamradio.com.
