On November 5, 1936 — The Dodgers name Burleigh Grimes as their new manager. The former Brooklyn spitballer will be replacing Casey Stengel, who was fired last month during the World Series after compiling a 208-251 (.453) record during his four-year tenure. The Dodgers for a short period will be paying 3 managers, Max Carey, Grimes and Stengel. Grimes will last two seasons and win only 131 games and lose 171.On November 5, 1997 – In an unprecedented move, Davey Johnson resigns the same day he is named American League Manager of the Year. Despite the fact that Johnson ended the Baltimore Orioles' 13-year playoff drought in 1996 and led the Orioles to the league's best record in 1997 (98-64), a dispute over $10,500 in fines to second baseman Roberto Alomar ends Johnson's reign in Baltimore. Johnson directed the fines to be paid to a charity. Orioles owner Peter Angelos is upset with the way the matter is handled and Johnson resigns. On November 5, 2010 — One of the approximately 60 rare T206 Honus Wagner baseball cards, auctioned off by the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame, is acquired by a sporting card store owner Doug Walton, who pays $262,000 for the treasured piece of memorabilia. The School Sisters of Notre Dame plan to use the windfall from the sale of the valuable card of the Pirates' third baseman to benefit ministries for the poor in 35 countries.Born November 5, Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays as the second player overall in the 1978 free agent draft, Lloyd Moseby was rushed to the majors by the talent-hungry Blue Jays faster than the development of his potential would have ordinarily warranted. A talented center fielder, he combined with Jesse Barfield and George Bell to form what was sometimes called the best outfield in baseball in the late 1980s.In 1983 Moseby became the first Blue Jay to score 100 runs in a season, and tied teammate Damaso Garcia for a team-record (and league-leading) 21-game hitting streak. The following season, he tied with teammate Dave Collins for the AL lead in triples, and was a consistent run-producer and stolen base threat for the mid-80s Jays. By the end of the decade, the “best outfield” was being dismantled. Barfield was traded to the Yankees, and emerging prospect Junior Felix was gradually pushing Moseby out of center. When Moseby signed with the Detroit Tigers in December 1989, he left Toronto as the Blue Jays' career leader in games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, extra-base hits, stolen bases, strikeouts, being hit by the pitch, and sacrifice flies.

It's a big week for yours truly as I'll close out the first quarter of the year with the first of two podcasts coming your way with all that's happening in the sports universe. On deck: (4:00) We can all exhale from the Madness of March that took place over the past 96 hours. I'll get into the micro and macro of the past four days (the four #1 seeds still alive, including Houston hanging on against Texas A&M. CORRECTION: I mentioned Texas Tech, NOT Texas A&M at times as the team that faced Houston. My apologies for the egregious error. Purdue could be Final Four ready.) The Cinderella teams couldn't make it to a Sweet Sixteen (other than #11 NC State) I'll get into how the SEC & Mountain West got destroyed. Has Kentucky coach John Calipari's star fallen after another inexplicable first round exit? The three Big East teams has showed up and showed out. (UCONN, Marquette & Creighton) as we now wait for the tournament to tip off come Thursday. I'll also see what's happening with the women's tourney, although I don't have much to unpack. (26:19) The NBA is going to lay in the weeds over the next week or so, since it's being swallowed up by March Madness. Is the return of Russell Westbrook going to move the needle in the Association? I'll take a peek at a few intriguing races (the 3-5 seeds in the East, the top 3 out West and can the Rockets overtake the Warriors for the final play-in spot?) (39:41) Don't look now, but there are seven teams in the NHL that are separated by one point for the President's Trophy as the best regular season team in the league? Is this something to hang your hat on, considering that past teams who've held that distinction, haven't won a Stanley Cup? I'll check what else is happening, especially with the playoff races in both conferences as we down to about a dozen games or so in the season. (46:40) The curtain on the 2024 MLB season is on the horizon. First pitch is set for this Thursday across the sport. I'll review the over/under win totals for all teams in light of my baseball preview on Thursday, which I'll select three overs and three under. I'll share my thoughts of the Mets signing DH JD Martinez. Brewer fans will have to wait until next year to see their stud starting pitcher, Brandon Woodruff. And pay respects to former Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, who passed away at the age of 94. (56:08) A trade of note forthcoming in the NFL as the Chiefs are reported to deal CB L'Jarius Sneed to Tennessee for two draft picks in the upcoming draft next month. How big of a loss this will be for the defending Super Bowl Champions? I'm honored to welcome in a new partnership to the podcast. Are you familiar with Olipop soda? Fantasy Baseball Live – February 4, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes1.The Angelos family agreed to sell their team to a group headed by famed private equity manager David Rubenstein. Also included in the team is HOFer Cal Ripken and former NYC mayor and billionaire Mike Bloomberg. The Angelos family still has a controlling interest but has agreed to sell the team upon the passing of Peter Angelos, who is 94 and in failing health.a.While this doesn't guarantee that the new ownership group will spend money, the Angelos family was not going to. Therefore, I think it's a good thing for the Orioles franchise. Your thoughts?2.Perhaps related to the sale, the following day, the Orioles acquired Corbin Burnes from the Brewers for IF Joey Ortiz, LHP DL Hall and the Orioles 1st round competitive balance pick (Pick #34).a.What did you think of the deal? Was it a win-win or did one side get the better of the other?b.You have to like the Orioles top three starters now in Burnes, G. Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish, no?c.Do you think the Brewers had to do this deal as the likelihood of signing Burnes, a Boras client, was next to zero?d.Are you investing in either Hall or Ortiz?3.The A's acquire Ross Stripling. It's not great stuff but he throws strikes. Any interest?Segment 3 – Starting Pitching Preview (We will likely do two podcast)1.How are you approaching this position for your upcoming drafts?2.We will break down the top 30 to 45 in detail. Then, go through the next 30 in less detail. We will end by jumping around the remaining ranked players.3.Which player not in the Top 15 has a chance to emerge there next season?4.Which Top 15 player will not be there next season?5.Give me a couple of sleepers6.Give me one, maybe two guys you will just avoid drafting?

Peter Angelos has agreed to sell the Baltimore Orioles after owning them for 31 years. The new ownership group is led by private equity executive and Baltimore native David Rubenstein. It includes Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Grant Hill, as well as former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, and prompts questions on how this will alter team operations and whether it will lead to the sale of the Washington Nationals. Sam Dingman, co-host of the Orioles podcast The Rumor, joins the show to discuss what this means for the team and their fans. Plus, the PGA Tour has secured a $1.5 billion investment that could rise to $3 billion as it continues to negotiate with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The deal bolsters the future of the leading golf organization as it works to determine the future of the sport.

It takes a special quality to thumb your nose at a city, a state and a culture to hold out for just what you want just the way you want it. Call it persistence. Call it self-confidence. Call it arrogance. Whatever it is, Orioles CEO John Angelos has it in abundance. That quality has been on display for quite some time in the Angelos family, John's father, Peter, a supremely gifted attorney and the longtime chairman of the Orioles, never suffered fools gladly. Peter Angelos made it clear that during his working life and in his time as the chief executive of the Orioles that he knew what he wanted and would do what it took to get it, even at the expense of his image. I witnessed it first-hand 27 years ago when the contract of Orioles radio announcer Jon Miller was coming to an end. Miller, who is on the short list of the most gifted play-by-play men in baseball broadcast history, was beloved in this city and dearly wanted to stay. But Peter Angelos decided that Miller's on-air work wasn't sycophantic enough. He told me that he wanted Miller to quote bleed a little black and orange unquote, those being the Orioles' team colors. Miller bolted for San Francisco, where he has been ever since. His departure cast a pall over the reputation of all who have followed him in the booth. Flash forward to the present day where John Angelos is in charge. Another gifted Orioles announcer, Kevin Brown, apparently ran afoul of the boss Bird by having the temerity to express that the team hadn't played well recently in Tampa and with facts to back it up. For that, he was suspended for two weeks. We say apparently because, unlike his father, John Angelos didn't step forward to claim his handiwork, leaving it for others to surmise, given the family history, that he was offended by Brown's trip to the land of truthfulness. The team's attempt to stifle honest dialogue, though universally condemned in and out of town, could have been waived away as, well, just weird if not for revelations about the ongoing negotiations to get the Birds to commit to Baltimore long term. The city's major newspapers traded reporting about dealings between John Angelos and the Maryland Stadium Authority, which owns Oriole Park. First, the Baltimore Sun reported that John Angelos halted negotiations until the new Maryland governor, Wes Moore, took office in January. The clear implication was that Moore, who received campaign contributions from John Angelos, would treat the club more fairly. The paper later added that Thomas Kelso, the former stadium authority director, accused Angelos and Moore of keeping him in the dark about negotiations. The Baltimore Banner reported that John Angelos has tried to extract more money as well as land from the state above the $600 million the club will get in bonds for stadium renovations once it signs a long term lease. If the Orioles sign a new lease before the December 31 expiration date, all of this may be forgotten. But history suggests that John Angelos probably isn't done putting into practice the lessons he's learned from his father. And that's how I see it for this week. The full team is rested and ready as they meander and laugh through a minefield of topics. It is a business show so they start by talking numbers. NBA playoff ratings having a "No LeBron" factor, the entire world attending the NFL Draft in Nashville and why are MLB parks empty in its opening month. This starts them gabbing about Peter Angelos, Jeffrey Loria, and well…a themed emerged. They continue hammering at the theme as they talk the curse of the ex-athlete owner and the Orioles shady dealings blowing up in their faces looking at whopping $100 Million settlement to the Nationals over local media coverage. They end any show like they should, by piling on Jason Whitten, ESPN and the travesty that has become the MNF broadcast booth.
