The latest climate outlook from the Bureau of Meterology is forecasting the month of May to be dry across the entire country.
As South East Queensland awaits Tropcial Cyclone Alfred, here is the latest information from the Bureau of Meterology as of Friday 2pm. Daniel Hayes from the Bureau of Meterology told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "The system is still a Category 2 out there moving towards the coast." "The expectation is we'll see it cross over the Moreton Bay Islands, later or early hours of tomorrow morning before making its way across the bay and crossing over the mainland sometime later tomorrow morning," Mr Hayes continued. Weather is a key driver in energy markets – from trading in the day ahead markets to weather events that can disrupt operations for months on end. Accurate forecasting has always been an edge. New technologies are making some aspects of forecasting ever more accurate. At the same time, climate change is making extreme events more frequent and significant. What keeps a meteorologist up at night? Why do energy traders employ meteorologists? How is technology changing the profession? Our guest is Matt Lanza, who has over 20 year's experience working on trading floors as a meteorologist .
Acknowledgement of Country//Headlines// Vikki John on Tuesday Hometime//Jan Bartlett from Tuesday Hometime, spoke with longtime activist Vikki John with updates from Bougainville. Including, the Class Action against Rio Tinto (and subsidiary: Bougainville Copper Ltd.), as well as the 'Panguna Mine Legacy Impact Assessment' by Melbourne's Human Rights Law Centre. This November marks 5 years since Bougainvilleans cast their ballots in a non-binding referendum vote on independence. The referendum was a key part of the 2001 Peace Agreement that ended the war between Papua New Guinea and the Bougainville Revolutionary Army, which killed up to 20 000 people or 8-10% of the population, and in which Australia played a negative role supporting PNG. Tune into Tuesday Hometime every Tuesday from 4-6pm on 3CR,and listen back to past episodes of the program here.// Professor Mark Howden and Emma Bacon// Last Thursday 31 October, CSIRO and the Bureau of Meterology released the State of the Climate 2024 report, which shows Australians are already living through the severe consequences of climate change and pollution caused by fossil fuel emissions, including a rise in extreme fire seasons, extreme heat events, intense heavy rainfall and sea level rise. To discuss the report's findings and contextualise them within Australia's climate change mitigation and adaptation obligations both at the domestic level and internationally, we were joined by Professor Mark Howden, Director of the Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions at The Australian National University, and Emma Bacon, Executive Director and Founder of Sweltering Cities.// Leon Wiegard, ASU Assistant Branch Secretary// Leon Wiegard, Assistant Branch Secretary of the Australian Services Union, joined us to discuss how employers are attempting to make it lawful for community and disability support workers to be at work for up to 28 hours without overtime pay, and seeks to classify sleepovers at as ‘breaks' between shifts, rather than as part of a continuous shift with the ordinary hours - a move the Australian Services Union has condemned as reckless, arrogant and unjust.// Dario Mujkic, UWU Executive Director// Dario Mujkic, Executive Director of the United Workers' Union, joins us to unpack Woolworths' controversial Coaching and Productivity Framework, currently the subject of complaint to the Fair Work Commission. The Framework, introduced in late 2023, sits within a broader field of workforce management strategies employed in warehousing to drive up worker productivity rates and increase companies' profit margins, initiatives which come at a significant cost to workers' health, safety and wellbeing.// Event: Murnong Gathering This Saturday 9 Nov 11am - 4pmCome along for a beautiful afternoon along the Merri Creek in Coburg for a celebration of Wurundjeri culture. With performances from the Djirri Djirri and Allara. Please BYO picnic to share with friends and family. Topics Covered Stephanie Abrams grew up in Florida and the first time she considered a career in meteorology was after witnessing the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew's impact to south Miami Dade County in 1992. Some of the most memorable storms she has covered in the past include Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hurricane Michael in 2018, and Hurricane Laura during the historic 2020 hurricane season. Another memorable event Stephanie covered for the Weather Channel was the 2017 Solar Eclipse in the U.S., her love of the sciences as a kid from participating in NASA's science camp, and by chasing an eclipse with her dad culminated into an emotional event while witnessing the 2017 eclipse. Stephanie prefers the humid Florida summers to the cold and snowy winters in New York.
Our first episode is all about the monster tornado that hit London in 1091. You'll learn all about TORRO Scale Zero, how stormchasers in the US memorialized Bill Paxton, the Benedictine historians Florence and William, the safest part of St. Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside, how much a Norman helmet weighed, and what medieval London (probably) smelled like. From Solar Flares, the Starlink and Cone Cells, we peek planning, providing, and variability of perception. Coming back down to earth we face some hard truths on climate change. But when the science is presented as it is, facts are neutral. We have the opportunity to enlighten our way of life.

In 2014, Rolling Stone referred to Eric Holthaus as “the Rebel Nerd of Meteorology”, mainly in regards to his reputation for being defiantly optimistic in the world of science. His work as a meteorologist and writing has highlighted the belief that climate change is the most important and consequential story of our time. Furthermore, Eric’s transparency about living with autism and advocating for self-care have changed the way he interacts with the rest of the world. In this conversation, Branden and Eric discuss how weather unites us in unique ways — and how this notion should be celebrated. More: http://soundsgoodpodcast.com/eric
