Additional music today provided by Simon Panrucker www.soundcloud.com/simonpanrucker I'm releasing this VERY FUNNY podcast with my brother today because IT IS HIS BIRTHDAY! Happy Birthday to my number one muse, you are funny and brave and annoying and I love/hate when you challenge me to be courageous and the best I can be. I am largely who I am because of you. We have been speaking on the phone every day since lock down (he's in Australia), which we started to help his extreme struggle with depression and loneliness. These things are linked to, and also separate from, his mental illness, which he explains is kind of still misdiagnosed. It occurred to me I'm releasing this during Mental Health Awareness Week. My brother would probably hate that, he does not get along with things like Mental Health Awareness Week. I would encourage you to ask him why, but you probably won't like what he'll say. Things like MHAW have been really instrumental in helping me find the vocabulary to talk about my own health, and to feel comfortable talking about it to others, who are probably more open to receiving it, because of things like MHAW. I have struggled with anxiety, stress, low mood, and carry around a deep melancholy and self-loathing mostly as a result of being chronically bullied in my childhood. I have received years of low-cost therapy, attended NHS workshops, paid for mindfulness courses, and have found great strength and understanding from continuing to share my journey of growth with my friends and family. At the risk of paraphrasing and getting it wrong, I think my brother finds things like MHAW problematic because he struggles to get the right and compassionate help, care, medication, funding and general daily respect from we, the public, that is his right as a gorgeous human being. So on Mental Health Awareness Week, have a listen to this podcast, we accidentally bust some myths about people with schizophrenia/personality disorders/mental illness just through a charming bit of banter! Please join me wishing Liam Happy Birthday, because he's GLORIOUS and deserves ALL THE LOVE. AND HE IS 38 HAHAHAHA, OLD MAN!

Should we promote mental health or combat mental illness? Can we do both? In this bonus episode, Eric and Tony engage in critical dialogue about the purpose and priorities of mental health advocacy. Eric leans more in the direction of such groups as Mental Health America promoting mental health by combating stigma, as represented in this quote: This year marks Mental Health America's 70th year celebrating Mental Health Month! In 2019 we are expanding upon last year's theme of #4Mind4Body and taking it to the next level, as we explore the topics of animal companionship (including pets and support animals), spirituality, humor, work-life balance, and recreation and social connections as ways to boost mental health and general wellness.  (from the Mental Health America, May newsletter) Tony, on the other hand, sides squarely with groups and individuals who believe the best, and perhaps only way to promote well-being is to combat serious mental illness through improved treatment and rigorous research. May is being celebrated as Mental Health Awareness Week or Month (MHAW or MHAM). In celebration, well-intentioned advocates are hosting events they think reduce the “stigma” of mental illness. But they are inadvertently perpetuating it...... MHAW public service announcements never feature the homeless psychotic, eating out of garbage cans, sleeping in cardboard homes, and living with festering wounds under layer after layer of filthy clothes, or those locked behind bars or in institutions. Why? The stigma advocates fear that showing the most seriously ill will create stigma. But trying to gain sympathy for mental illness by only displaying the highest functioning, is like trying to gain support for ending hunger by only showing the well-fed.    (from "Why I Don't Celebrate Mental Health Month" by DJ Jaffe) Jaffe is Executive Director of Mental Illness Policy Org., and author of Insane Consequences: How the Mental Health Industry Fails the Mentally Ill. Which side are you on? Is it possible to be on both? How can we learn from each other? Listen and see.

In this episode Bobby talks to his guest about anorexia and puts into words for the first time on the show how body image influences his mental health. Join us as we try to unpack the complex world of eating disorders and take down some of the unhealthy pressures society places on how we look. We are proud to release this podcast during Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) 2018. The topic for MHAW 2018 is stress and how we handle it. Research by Happiness Works has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this. Here we go! Mental is the brain-child of Bobby Temps, who lives and thrives while managing his own mental health. Every Thursday we delve into a factor or condition that influences the mind and how to better manage it.
