Today on Politics Friday, John MacDonald was joined by National's Matt Doocey and Labour's Tracey McLellan to wrap this week's political stories. They discussed Phase 1 of the Covid Inquiry and Kiwis' shaken trust in the government, whether Labour will commit to a capital gains tax as they head into their party conference this weekend, and Matt Doocey touched on the recently revealed texts he received from Mike King. The Mental Health Minister says he didn't reply to the texts after King's controversial comments around alcohol because he didn't want to. The I Am Hope founder told Newstalk ZB last month that alcohol is the solution for mental health issues, until a better solution is found. Minister Matt Doocey was among those to publicly reject the claim. King, who receives $24 million in government funding for his mental health charity, sent Doocey a 500 word text attempting to justify his claim. Doocey told John MacDonald he scanned the message, but doesn't reply to every text he gets, and had already stated his position. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you care about the mental health of our young people, if you are a parent of a child who is struggling or advocating to get your child or young adult diagnosed and treated, the last thing you want to hear in the news is more gotcha moments around the I Am Hope charity - and politicians reacting to it. As someone who has first-hand experience of how overwhelmed our mental health system is, and how long and hard parents must fight and wait for the life changing and often life-saving treatment our children and adolescents need, there is nothing appealing about politicising the issue. This is not the time for grandstanding. This is not the time for the opposition to count hits against the coalition Government; and this is not the time for the Government to sweep their decision-making under the carpet. These are children's lives we are talking about. This is families in distress and disarray. Please, can we do away with the sound bites and headlines and get on with the job? The Prime Minister was right when he said this week: “Do not play politics with youth mental health”. He said this in response to calls for his Government to review funding for Mike King's mental health charity I Am Hope, in the wake of an ill-considered and out-of-context comment King made about alcohol being a short-term fix for those going through a rough period with their mental health. But when you grant one charity $24 million over 4 years - more than the whole contestable Mental Health Innovation Fund promised by National - then I am sorry Prime Minister, but you have opened this issue up for scrutiny. At the beginning of October, the Auditor General raised concerns about the process in which the Ministry of Health allocated the funding, “without an open, transparent, and competitive procurement process”. The ministry took the hit, but the push to do what they did came from the Government. So it is on the Ministry and the Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey to assure this investment is achieving the performance measures set in place. That it is helping make a difference to the stretched public service by providing support for young people in distress. And if it is not, to do something about it. As for Gumboot Friday and I am Hope - forget the commentary and the politicking and get on with what you are so determined to do. Improve the mental health of our young people. We all need this to work, and we all will benefit when it does. So I strongly suggest everyone stick to their own lanes and get on with it. A professor of psychological medicine says mental health advocates shouldn't spout misinformation about alcohol. I Am Hope and Gumboot Friday campaigner Mike King yesterday told Newstalk ZB alcohol could be a solution for people with mental health issues. Labour has called on the Government to review its $24 million funding for his charity, which delivers youth counselling. Otago University's Joseph Boden says although alcohol can temporarily help people think about fewer problems, it's far from a fix. "The difficulty is - it is actually a nervous system depressant. So when misused, it can increase suicide risk." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recently, Boris was diagnosed with a rare neuroendocrine cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. Saturday Morning with Jack Tame
Jack Tame: A new high in reality TV casting

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2023 4:11

Maybe I'm just too close to it, but my sense is that a big slab of the New Zealand public is thoroughly sick of the election campaign already.  People are done. They're fed up. They're spent. And for the days of the week in between significant sporting fixtures, they're dead keen for a different kind of contest that doesn't seem so negative and bleak.   And this morning, I've got the answer. Before I share it though, you've got to understand, I'm not usually one to gush about reality TV. It's not that I'm too cerebral or hoity-toity. It's not that I spend my evenings annotating James Joyce and listening to Baroque compositions in a leather armchair, it's certainly not that I don't own a TV. It's just that sometimes I find some of the shows a bit formulaic.  This one will be different. On Monday night, a new season of Celebrity Treasure Island begins, and as much as I'm excited about the comedians, and the middle-aged sporting stars, one celebrity contestant in particular marks what I think is an extraordinary new high in reality TV casting.  Competing in the Papura team and raising money for I Am Hope, is none other than Tame Iti.  Yes, that Tame Iti. Tame Iti of the discharging-a-shotgun-at-Waitangi Tame Iti. He of Te Urewera raids. Tame Iti, former member of the NZ Communist Party. Former champion wrestler. Tame Iti, actor, artist. Tame Iti, lifelong Māori rights activist.  This is what makes New Zealand great. Only in New Zealand could a person like Tame Iti, with his extraordinary life and history, be happily cast in a survival reality show alongside the former captain of the Warriors.  To be fair, Celebrity Treasure Island has consistently set the standard for entertaining New Zealand telly. I know there will be some people rolling their eyes but trust me - that's only because you haven't seen it. The thing that makes the show so genius is how it has become such a glorious reflection of our culture. The cast is always diverse. They're always characters. And as much as they each want to compete to win, the programme as a whole never takes itself very seriously. It's incredible self-aware and self-deprecating. It's moving. It's emotional.  If you do decide to do it, to get yourself in the mood, watch Tame Iti's Ted talk on Youtube. It's a simple speech called Mana: The Power in Knowing Who You Are. It's the most moving and affecting Ted talk I've ever seen.  So that's my recommendation for you this week. If you feel like the election campaign has turned into a daily exercise in talking down New Zealand, give Celebrity Treasure Island a crack.  Tame Iti, artist. Tame Iti, activist. Could he soon be Tame Iti, Celebrity Treasure Island champion? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, Melie is not only an exceptional athlete representing the White Ferns, the renowned New Zealand women's cricket team, but she also plays for the Wellington Blaze and participates in esteemed cricket leagues worldwide. From the Australian Women's Big Bash League with the Brisbane Heat to competing in England's The Hundred with the London Spirit, Melie's passion for the sport knows no bounds. Beyond her athletic endeavors, Melie is eagerly engaged in an exciting new project called "Out of the Rough," alongside her partnership with I Am Hope. Together, they are dedicated to raising awareness and shedding light on the critical importance of seeking help, whether it's for oneself or others. If you have loved ones struggling, Melie encourages you to regularly check in on them, shower them with love and care, and most importantly, be patient. Rugby player Tai Tupou was preparing for the chance to become a NZ Warrior, chasing his dreams to represent Auckland in the NRL, when his plans were put on hold during the selection processes. Injuring his ankle threw and spanner in the works and Tai suffered a huge blow to his mental health. The subsequent depression as a result of this life change eventually lead Tai down the path of education for Kiwi youth to spread a positive message about mental health management. Ten years on, Tai now works with I Am Hope traveling around the country to educate Kiwis and reduce the stigma around discussing mental health – particularly within the sport industry and among men. Sharing his story to inspire others, Tai took his learnings to help the next generation, encouraging kids to see through the tough times – because there's always light at the end of the tunnel. With three kids of his own, Tai is driven by the need to uplift kids and let them know that you can overcome all of life's challenges.
