Thomas, welcome to Spartan Nation.Speaker 2:Thanks so much. So happy to be here.Speaker 1:Great to have you here to get to know you a little better. Why don't you start with a little bit of your background before you've come here to MSU?Speaker 2:Sure. So I started my undergraduate career as a physics major. Quickly changed to undeclared and that was sort of the perfect lens for me to explore and have new experiences as a college student. At the end of that experience, I settled on art history and film and media studies as a double major, and that pairing really kind of structured my academic journey in a lot of ways. So I did a master's in art history and then was going simultaneously to Northwestern to take classes in film and media and was approached by a faculty member who said you should really check out this new field called Visual studies. And that led me to the University of California Irvine, where I did my PhD program. It was a truly interdisciplinary experience that brought together film and media studies, art history, and then in my case, philosophy. So as I transitioned to professorship, I began to realize how much I enjoyed administrative work. I enjoyed leading committees, putting together new initiatives, even working with budgets, and really found that it was an opportunity for me to expand the area of my impact across the institution and in the community. So I soon became director for the Office of Faculty Development at UMass Dartmouth, was associate dean for the College of Visual and Performing Arts there, and then moved to the University of Rhode Island where I was associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. And that was an opportunity to work with the arts and humanities within an expanded field that included computer science, physics, criminal justice, and so on. So there was a lot of benefit in terms of understanding disciplines outside of my own, but when this job came up, it just seemed like such a perfect fit for my interest. And so that's sort of the path that led me here.Speaker 1:And have you had any past experience with either the state of Michigan or MSU by chance?Speaker 2:Not really. I will say my wife and three kids, and I have really loved the experience so far. It's such a vibrant community, shaped so much by the university. There's so many cultural events happening at any given time. It's a very family friendly place and lots of opportunities for enjoying nature. And there's parks and just green spaces to take advantage of. So it seems like a really wonderful place and a place that really supports the university. Everywhere I go and I mentioned I work at MSU, everyone has a story or a family member who's currently enrolled or as an alumni, and it's just a really nice feeling to feel that support in the community.Speaker 1:And how many times were you, did someone say Go green before you knew to say Go white? Beth probably taught you that right away then. Yeah, exactly. But say a little more about your own research interests and the scholarly activities you enjoy and will you have to put 'em on the back burner for a while maybe if you're dean now?Speaker 2:Yeah, absolutely. So my research area is pretty broad and diverse. I usually say I work in contemporary visual culture, which means any kind of visual media. I think the work that I was most excited about, and you're right, I don't get to do as much of it now, but was working across the aisle with multiple disciplines. I've collaborated with faculty in criminal justice to do conference presentations. I did a research fellowship on a botanist who was attempting to visualize smell, and that botanist was collaborating with a photographer. So I did a deep dive into their work. So it's those kinds of collaborative interdisciplinary projects that really attracted me. And I produced two books. The first was nine 11 and the Visual Culture of Disasters published by Indiana University Press. And the second was a book on drone art War as Everyday Medium. And that really looked at the way that drones were depicted in film, media, television, gallery art, and also the way they were used as media for the creation of art and so on. So a really diverse approach. I enjoyed that work very much, but I find myself pretty occupied with administration these days.Speaker 1:Thomas Stubblefield is my guest on MU today, the Dean of MSU's College of Arts and Letters. So Thomas, what attracted you to MSU? Kind of a two-part question, and why do you want to be the dean? Speaker 2:Yeah. MSU has such an international reputation of research excellence, of innovative research coupled with emphasis on student success. And I think that's rare. That's a very difficult combination to maintain. I think one of the things that really struck me in regard to the latter, that emphasis on student success was MSU is not a gatekeeper in terms of keeping out students. We have a high acceptance rate relative to our peer institutions, but we also have a high success rate and a high retention rate, which means we fully support the students in their journey with us and make sure that they're led toward that succes...

Jerry Trupiano spent nearly 15 years in the Red Sox radio booth and called the team's historic 2004 World Series victory, ironically in his hometown of St. Louis. Trupiano attended St. Louis University and grew up learning from legendary Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck. Prior to his time in Boston, Jerry was a sports talk show host for 14 years in Houston and did play-by-play for all of the city's professional teams.Early in his radio career, he gave a University of Houston student named Jim Nantz his first job in sports broadcasting. Years later at the 2021 Ouimet Banquet, Nantz surprised Trupiano by naming his endowed Ouimet Scholarship in honor of his mentor and longtime friend. In the Ouimet tradition, Jerry has continued paying it forward, teaching young broadcasters at the University of Houston and locally at Dean College.

As John has spoken of many times on this podcast, he spent 1999-2002 coaching soccer at University of Vermont. So needless to say when the Catamounts won the 2024 NCAA Championship, he was over the moon. And he was even more excited when Head Coach Rob Dow and Associate Head Coach Brad Cole agreed to join him on the podcast. 2024 was Head Coach Rob Dow's 8th as Head Coach and 13th overall at Vermont, and it was a doozy, winning his second America East Championship and oh yeah, the 2024 NCAA Championship in thrilling fashion. In eight seasons at the helm, Dow has accumulated a 95-40 record, producing a winning record in each season since taking over in 2017. The Catamounts have finished in the America East top two in six of his seven seasons, including two regular season titles and two tournament titles, and 4 straight NCAA appearances. Prior to Vermont Dow was the asst. coach at Southern New Hampshire and head coach at Dean College, helping his teams achieve tremendous success. In our podcast today, we talk with Rob and Brad and break down the program they have built and their keys to success this season. We also discuss the thrilling Final 4 and NCAA tourney run, and how that success was built many months prior through love, vulnerability, and the relentless pursuit of championship behaviors. This is a remarkable story of a 15 year overnight success, and success leaves clues. PUT IN YOUR BULK BOOK ORDERS FOR OUR BESTSELLING BOOKS! Today on Up In Your Business you will be swept away as art history professor Gayle Seymour, Associate Dean at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, teaches us about Arkansas's history and culture. Gayle wrote the grant that led to the 60-year Central High Little Rock Nine reunion where President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker. We will hear how Gayle commissioned the Cuban born composer, Tania Leon, to score a dramatic opera about the “Little Rock Nine” and enlisted Henry Louis Gates to write the libretto (words). This project has been stalled due to the pandemic of 2020, but we will preview a little of the opera on today's show. We will also learn about Japanese American Internment art and get an excerpt from its most famous Arkansas resident Star Trek's Mr. Sulu, George Takei. Other areas of Gayle's expertise inclued American art, Women in Art, and my favorite, Depression-era post office murals (think Norman Rockwell on a wall). Over 1400 murals were painted during the 1930's and 40's, as part of the New Deal, nineteen of which are located in Arkansas. And if that is not enough, she is an avid collector of antique Dolls! Listen and get a lesson on an array of interesting topics from this very interesting person.

This session shares the audio for the Davis Thayer Reuse Advisory Subcmte meeting held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The meeting was conducted in the Council Chambers. The second meeting of the month, and last of the time period per the Committee Charge. This session was a more ‘formal' review of the Expression of Interests in the building/property. Four were scheduled to present this night. Two joined together to collaborate on a single proposal. After hearing the brief presentations from the three proposals, the committee reviewed and revised the draft report to the Council with their recommendation. The recommendations were high level (keep building, lease land, etc.) and not picking or recommending a specific proposal. The report will be presented to the Town Council in a future meeting for the next steps (Council likely to authorize a formal Request for Proposal (RFP)) to get into the real selection process. Cost remains a driving factor, hence what can one of the proposals do with their financing and little (if any) assistance from the Town. The recording runs about almost 2 hours, so let's listen in.--------------The Franklin TV video is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cruuseXmHqc1. Mary Keleher was born and raised in Manchester, NH. Mary holds a degree in dance from Dean College and is the current titleholder for the Miss Berlin-Gorham Scholarship Program, a preliminary competition through the Miss New Hampshire and Miss America Scholarship Programs. She chose "Understanding ADHD" for her Social Impact Initiative as the current Miss Berlin-Gorham because of the lack of understanding people have of the disorder. Mary has a diagnosis of ADHD inattentive type and was not diagnosed until she was 18 years old. It is her belief that she didn't receive a diagnosis until she was an adult because she didn't fit the hyperactive stereotype, and because she had OCD and anxiety as a child that masked a lot of her symptoms. When Mary finally received a diagnosis of ADHD, she had a hard time believing that it was “just ADHD.” She thought that she had to have additional learning or neurological disorders because of the amount of impairment she felt, and that is when she realized that ADHD is a lot bigger deal than society makes it out to be. The goal of her platform is to help people understand what ADHD is and that it is not made up.
