SummaryIn this Change the Story, Good Trouble “Weather Report” episode, Michael Bobbit, Executive Director of the Mass Cultural Council, joins host BC to examine the turbulent climate for arts and social change under the Trump regime. From the erosion of DEI policies to looming threats against public arts funding, Bobbit underscores the urgent need for advocacy and proactive engagement across the arts sector. This compelling conversation offers both a diagnosis of the current cultural storm and a call to action for artists, organizers, and institutions to reclaim their power in the public square.BioMichael J. Jerry Trupiano spent nearly 15 years in the Red Sox radio booth and called the team's historic 2004 World Series victory, ironically in his hometown of St. Louis. Trupiano attended St. Louis University and grew up learning from legendary Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck. Prior to his time in Boston, Jerry was a sports talk show host for 14 years in Houston and did play-by-play for all of the city's professional teams.Early in his radio career, he gave a University of Houston student named Jim Nantz his first job in sports broadcasting. Years later at the 2021 Ouimet Banquet, Nantz surprised Trupiano by naming his endowed Ouimet Scholarship in honor of his mentor and longtime friend. In the Ouimet tradition, Jerry has continued paying it forward, teaching young broadcasters at the University of Houston and locally at Dean College.

As John has spoken of many times on this podcast, he spent 1999-2002 coaching soccer at University of Vermont. So needless to say when the Catamounts won the 2024 NCAA Championship, he was over the moon. And he was even more excited when Head Coach Rob Dow and Associate Head Coach Brad Cole agreed to join him on the podcast. 2024 was Head Coach Rob Dow's 8th as Head Coach and 13th overall at Vermont, and it was a doozy, winning his second America East Championship and oh yeah, the 2024 NCAA Championship in thrilling fashion. In eight seasons at the helm, Dow has accumulated a 95-40 record, producing a winning record in each season since taking over in 2017. The Catamounts have finished in the America East top two in six of his seven seasons, including two regular season titles and two tournament titles, and 4 straight NCAA appearances. Prior to Vermont Dow was the asst. coach at Southern New Hampshire and head coach at Dean College, helping his teams achieve tremendous success. In our podcast today, we talk with Rob and Brad and break down the program they have built and their keys to success this season. We also discuss the thrilling Final 4 and NCAA tourney run, and how that success was built many months prior through love, vulnerability, and the relentless pursuit of championship behaviors. This is a remarkable story of a 15 year overnight success, and success leaves clues. PUT IN YOUR BULK BOOK ORDERS FOR OUR BESTSELLING BOOKS! Today on Up In Your Business you will be swept away as art history professor Gayle Seymour, Associate Dean at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, teaches us about Arkansas's history and culture. Gayle wrote the grant that led to the 60-year Central High Little Rock Nine reunion where President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker. We will hear how Gayle commissioned the Cuban born composer, Tania Leon, to score a dramatic opera about the “Little Rock Nine” and enlisted Henry Louis Gates to write the libretto (words). This project has been stalled due to the pandemic of 2020, but we will preview a little of the opera on today's show. We will also learn about Japanese American Internment art and get an excerpt from its most famous Arkansas resident Star Trek's Mr. Sulu, George Takei. Other areas of Gayle's expertise inclued American art, Women in Art, and my favorite, Depression-era post office murals (think Norman Rockwell on a wall). Over 1400 murals were painted during the 1930's and 40's, as part of the New Deal, nineteen of which are located in Arkansas. And if that is not enough, she is an avid collector of antique Dolls! Listen and get a lesson on an array of interesting topics from this very interesting person.

This session shares the audio for the Davis Thayer Reuse Advisory Subcmte meeting held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The meeting was conducted in the Council Chambers. The second meeting of the month, and last of the time period per the Committee Charge. This session was a more ‘formal' review of the Expression of Interests in the building/property. Four were scheduled to present this night. Two joined together to collaborate on a single proposal. After hearing the brief presentations from the three proposals, the committee reviewed and revised the draft report to the Council with their recommendation. The recommendations were high level (keep building, lease land, etc.) and not picking or recommending a specific proposal. The report will be presented to the Town Council in a future meeting for the next steps (Council likely to authorize a formal Request for Proposal (RFP)) to get into the real selection process. Cost remains a driving factor, hence what can one of the proposals do with their financing and little (if any) assistance from the Town. The recording runs about almost 2 hours, so let's listen in.--------------The Franklin TV video is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cruuseXmHqc1. This session of the radio show shares my recorded conversation with Barbara Steele, Nancy Rappa and Terry Robbins, all with FISH of Franklin. We had our conversation in the Franklin TV Studio conference room on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. The FISH of Franklin organization will be celebrating 50 years of community service this coming October 18 at Dean College. A “Save the Date” mailing was sent to the current list of volunteers and those they were able to find records for from prior years. However, they fear they may be missing some. Hence our conversation to get the word out so those who have volunteered in the past 50 years can get on the listing. Secondly, the FISH of Franklin are also looking for volunteers. We discussed their origin story, how the service they provide has evolved over the years, and that volunteering really is only a commitment for driving or handling the phone calls once a month. We talked of the three blessings for this volunteer effort. The recording runs about 35 minutes so let's listen in and learn about the three blessings of volunteering for FISH of Franklin.--------------FISH of Franklin volunteers provide rides to Franklin neighbors for medical or social service related appointments. This session shares part of the Franklin, MA Town Council meeting held on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format: members of the Town Council and Town Administration personnel were in the Council Chambers, some of the public participated in person, some were remote via the Zoom conference bridge, as we move to come out of this pandemic period. I've split the almost 3 hour meeting into three logical segments: First - covers the opening with 3 recognitions, and the public hearing on the tasting room definition zoning bylaw change (~37 mins) Second - covers the Dean College alcohol license discussion and new vote. Dean had been denied in 2020, appealed to the ABCC, and the ABCC determined the Council had improperly denied the license. (~1:09 or 69 mins) Third - covers the legislation for action including funding approval and acceptance of the first right of refusal for the Maple Hill purchase with CPA funds. They enter Executive Session and return about 30 minutes later. The update on the Town Administrators contract was provided, approved via vote, and then the meeting closed. (~44 minutes) The show notes contain links to the meeting agenda including documents released for this meeting. Mary Keleher was born and raised in Manchester, NH. Mary holds a degree in dance from Dean College and is the current titleholder for the Miss Berlin-Gorham Scholarship Program, a preliminary competition through the Miss New Hampshire and Miss America Scholarship Programs. She chose "Understanding ADHD" for her Social Impact Initiative as the current Miss Berlin-Gorham because of the lack of understanding people have of the disorder. Mary has a diagnosis of ADHD inattentive type and was not diagnosed until she was 18 years old. It is her belief that she didn't receive a diagnosis until she was an adult because she didn't fit the hyperactive stereotype, and because she had OCD and anxiety as a child that masked a lot of her symptoms. When Mary finally received a diagnosis of ADHD, she had a hard time believing that it was “just ADHD.” She thought that she had to have additional learning or neurological disorders because of the amount of impairment she felt, and that is when she realized that ADHD is a lot bigger deal than society makes it out to be. The goal of her platform is to help people understand what ADHD is and that it is not made up. The Wit And Wisdom Of Legendary Actor & Comedian Richard Belzer (Original broadcast 2017) The Outer Limits of Inner Truth sits down with legendary actor, brilliant comedian and bestselling author Richard Belzer. Belzer is well known for his portrayal of Detective John Munch, one of the longest-running roles in television history. After the introspective interview, Mr. Belzer is analyzed by Psychic Medium Kerrie O’Connor and Astrologer Constance Stellas. We learn about Mr. Belzer’s past-lives as well as his mission here on earth. Born in Connecticut in 1944, Richard Belzer wound his way toward New York City, and by the early 1970s had established himself on the comedy scene with his biting wit. After two decades’ worth of appearances onstage, in television and in film, in 1993 he landed the role for which he is best known, as Detective John Munch in the hit NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street. Belzer’s Munch was then incorporated into the crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a role that has lasted for more than 15 seasons. During this period, Belzer has also appeared in numerous other TV series and films and has also authored several conspiracy-theory themed books. Unruly Richard Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on August 4, 1944, and displayed a penchant for mischief early on. Though these tendencies would serve him well in his later career, as a youth they led to expulsions from numerous schools, including Dean College, which he attended briefly before being asked to leave following his participation in several student demonstrations. The early deaths of his parents only contributed to the chaos that neither a stint in the army, numerous day jobs nor his first marriage could tame. However, by the early 1970s, Belzer’s wanderings took him to New York City, where his rabble-rousing finally proved an asset, earning him a spot in the Channel One sketch-comedy group, which included rising comedic star Chevy Chase and resulted in Belzer’s screen debut in its 1974 film The Groove Tube. Meanwhile, Belzer was becoming a regular at New York City comedy clubs, sharpening his biting, sarcastic wit, eventually becoming the regular emcee at Catch a Rising Star and landing a role in the 1975 off-Broadway production of the National Lampoon stage show. When fellow cast members—including Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner—went on to form the core of Saturday Night Live! Belzer followed, with three appearances on the program between 1976 and 1978, a period during which Belzer’s second marriage came and went. Branching Out By the early 1980s, Belzer’s growing network of connections—which included his cousin Henry Winkler—helped his career get to the next level, with small parts in such iconic films of the era as Fame (1980), Author! Author! (1982) and Scarface (1983). His comic endeavors continued to flourish as well, leading to the Cinemax series The Richard Belzer Show in 1984 and a spot as the host of the late-night television show Hot Properties, on which he was once famously knocked unconscious by wrestler Hulk Hogan, whom he later sued. Wrestling injuries aside, by the latter half of the decade things were looking up for Belzer, who married actress Harlee McBride and began his career as an author with the satirical How to Be a Stand-Up Comic. He also continued to land parts in television and film, including on the series Miami Vice and The Flash and in Fletch Lives (1987) and Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), as well as making regular stand-up appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman. Becoming John Munch Sarcastic, conspiratorial, self-deprecating and smooth, in 1993 Belzer was able to infuse his real-life personality into the fictional role for which he is best known—as Detective John Munch. Created for the much-acclaimed NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street, Belzer’s Detective Munch served as the comic relief to Ned Beatty’s gruff Detective Stanley Bolander for the show’s successful seven-season run. However, by the time Homicide came to an end in 1999, the character had become so popular that—after several cameos in earlier seasons—it was incorporated permanently into Dick Wolf’s Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit. Appearing as the partner of Ice-T’s Detective Tutuola, Belzer’s Detective John Munch remained a central character on the popular show for 15 seasons before it was retired in 2013, making it one of the longest-running roles in television history. During this period, Belzer also appeared as Munch on several other series, including Sesame Street, The X-Files, The Wire and 30 Rock, among others. In May 2016, Belzer and Munch returned to Law & Order: SVU in a guest appearance for a new episode. Lone Nut Despite the demands of his duties as Detective John Munch, Belzer has simultaneously maintained his successful callings as a comedian, author and conspiracy theorist. In 1997 he starred in the HBO comedy special Richard Belzer: Another Lone Nut, and he has been a regular guest on the Howard Stern Show. He was cast as the president in the 1998 horror film Species II and appeared as himself in the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon (1999). Among his literary offerings are the novels I Am Not a Cop (2008) and I Am Not a Psychic (2009), as well as the conspiracy-theory titles Hit List: An In-Depth Investigation into the Mysterious Deaths of Witnesses to the JFK Assassination (2013), Dead Wrong (2013) and Someone Is Hiding Something: What Happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370? (2015). He also hosts the conspiracy-centered series The Belzer Connection and the popular YouTube series Richard Belzer’s Conversation. Website:

E21: Writing Your First Book & How Down Syndrome Could Change Your Outlook W/ Tori Swillum Today we take a look inside my family to introduce my sister Victoria Swillum. Tori is a dance major at Dean College who specializes in studio management and focuses on adaptive dance in the Down Syndrome community. Tori recently wrote her first book while at college on Down Syndrome awareness and how dance can play a role in the mental ability community. When Tori isn’t writing or doing her classes she works at the Boston Ballet and does adaptive dance courses at a local senior center for adults with a range of abilities. This episode dives into our mindset development from growing up with our brother Dylan who has Down Syndrome and what we’ve taken from the experience. Dylan has played an absolutely pivotal role in our mindset and outlook on life and we cannot be more passionate to share this feeling with people who haven’t had the chance to get involved with the community. Lastly we talk about writing your first book and some of the steps to take to make it happen. In this episode: Write a book! You can do it and distribute it for real! Self accountability Fighting procrastination or knowing how you work best Framing a book out, how to get started Technology gives you the access, distribution is ours now Dance in public if you want to, live like no one is watching Don’t let other people determine what you do as a person Creating friendships with the mental abilities community Stopping judgement, awareness of our own built in bias Progressing the disabled community with modern times Art is an unspoken language, how does this help non-verbal people? The hardest job I’ve had in my life was my first job out of college. I worked regular 80-90 hour weeks – 106 was my record. The customers had widely varying backgrounds and expectations. My bosses required regular reports, but didn’t provide me much support at all. It required every ounce of my brain. Every day was survival. And I loved it. I taught high school. In many ways, I became the poster child for teacher burnout. I went in ready to change the world. Instead, I washed out at the same point so many teachers do – after three years. People across the nation, and across the state, have been working for at least the past 20 years to figure out what it takes to get more teachers to stay in the classroom longer. Today, as the next school year cranks up, we talk with the dean of NC State’s College of Education, Dr. Mary Ann Danowitz, about the newest ideas schools of education have to raise up new teachers, find people from other professions who want to teach, and get teachers to stay longer in the profession. As you listen, try to think to yourself. Are there really many jobs in the world more complicated – or more important – than being a kindergarten teacher?
