We talk a lot about mental health and we thought it was about time to bring on a real mental health expert on the show, preferably someone who also has personal familiarity with the Asian American experience. What do you think of psychiatric medication? Do you ever see any Asian-Americans who are our parents generation (and what is THAT like???) What do your parents think about what you do? How do you deal with the stigma of mental health treatment in the Asian community? We discussed these questions and more with Grace Liu, a Stanford-trained psychologist and Chinese-American mom. She brought a very thoughtful and frank take on all of these questions and we loved having her on the show! In this episode, we're thrilled to welcome Dr. Grace Liu, also known as the Gut Goddess, as she delves into the critical role of gut health and the restoration of our natural microbes and keystone flora. She reveals a startling discovery: one-third of native gut flora has already vanished in Western populations. This depletion of the microbiome contributes to various health issues, including chronic fatigue, autoimmune disorders, and impaired toxin elimination—all of which can only be truly addressed by healing the gut.We also explore different gut testing methods, essential tools for identifying which microbes are missing and how to restore them. By understanding and correcting these imbalances, we lay the foundation for a healthier microbiome, enabling better digestion and tolerance of foods like gluten and dairy.Tune in as the Gut Goddess shares valuable insights on what we can learn from centenarians about longevity, with a focus on the power of diet and nutrition. The conversation also highlights the often-overlooked impact of environmental factors like black mold and aluminum exposure. Overall, this podcast offers a comprehensive guide for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of gut health. How can people connect with others without merging into them or letting them take over? How can we differentiate ourselves from one another while remaining connected in meaningful ways? These are some of the questions that Being Human host Steve Cuss poses to his guests, Grace Liu and Cory Elisabeth. The founders of Pursue Inner Growth, a coaching and counseling service in Indonesia, Liu and Elisabeth share rich and nuanced thoughts on how culture, place, and heritage shape who we are. Cuss speaks with Liu and Elisabeth about the unique challenges Southeast Asians face, the difference between an individualistic culture and a communal one, and how people can deal with both individual and communal shame. Their conversation covers some of the variances in Western and Asian psychology, such as what the idea of setting boundaries looks like in different cultures. Liu and Elisabeth walk through case studies of difficult interpersonal situations, discuss the implications of honor-shame culture, and share what they, as Indonesian women, wish that Cuss knew as a white man. SHR # 2990:: The Role of the Gut Microbiome in Alzheimer's Disease - Grace Liu, PharmD Several studies have shown that the gut plays a profound role in the onset of Parkinson's Disease. In fact, gut symptoms start as much as 10 years prior to the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. New research shows the same to be true of Alzheimer's. Changes in the gut may be the early warning signs in Alzheimer's as well. Most people ignore changes in gut function. Physicians advise people to take prescription and OTC drugs that mask the symptoms. Are there ways to address these changes that actually address the problem? Yes there are. - CARL RECOMMENDS: superhumanradio.net/carl-recommends - - View and download all shows at https://superhumanradio.net - Visit us on Instagram: @superhumanradio - Support SHR - https://superhumanradio.net/make-a-donation

SHR # 2968:: It's All In Your Gut - Dr. Grace Liu, PharmD - Hippocrates coined the term hypochondriac, which meant below the rib cage, or more specifically, the gut, as individuals who had illnesses that could not be pinpointed other than it was coming from this region of the body. Do you have community, a tribe, your people in your life? These last two years have been a challenge for many because we have had to be isolated. Whatever your personality, we need each other and togetherness allows us to grow and understand God better.Grace brought up the fact that community can be hard. It is no surprise we all are human and imperfect."There will be times where we rub each other the wrong way. But, if the foundation is the gospel, we all have the same thing to come back to...I don't think we should give up on each other just because we have a disagreement."Grace also challenged me to think about being in solitude. It is possible that a season of solitude is for a purpose. The quiet allows us a chance to draw closer to him in order to prepare for whatever is coming next in our life. I hope you can find something from this conversation to take away as well. E-mail me or find me on socials and let me know what you think. Reflection Questions:1. Have you been afraid of dipping your toe back into community? If so, what things from your life can you surrender? 2. Are you leading a life of authenticity? Does that flow into your friendships, with family, and with God?Connect with GraceInstagram Resource Global How to support The Parable Podcast#1 Subscribe or Follow the show so you don't miss the next episode of The Parable Podcast through your favorite podcast app (i.e. iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher). #2 Share this show with a friend, this is a perfect opportunity to start your own Parable Conversation together.#3 Join The Parable Podcast E-mail list so you can hear some of Danielle's own Parables and encouragement.

September 27, 2021 — KZYX took a significant step forward in the quest to bring its main studio to Ukiah last week. The station now has a permit to install a tower at 390 West Clay Street, formerly the site of acupuncturist Grace Liu's clinic. KZYX will maintain a satellite studio in Anderson Valley, but the current signal is threatened by the growth of trees between Philo and the transmitter on Cold Spring Mountain. Having a main base in the county seat has also been a dream for years. Craig Schlatter, the city's zoning administrator and director of community development, approved the permit at a hearing on Thursday morning and spoke with KZYX later in the afternoon. “From a planning perspective, it's a pretty strong project,” he said. “It really made a difference because the applicant had done so much on their own to work with the neighbors, and that's a key component to any successful project.” Schlatter added that the application was accompanied by three letters of support, from the sheriff, Cal Fire, and the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority. One neighbor had an aesthetic concern about the tower, and asked that it be situated a little further back from the street and tucked behind some tasteful vegetation, which the applicant agreed to do. KZYX board president Tom Dow has spearheaded efforts to secure the building and the permits, including knocking on doors and talking to people to find out how to get off to a good start with the neighbors. On Friday afternoon, he granted the first interview from the new station — and a tour. Dow reported that one of the key elements of establishing a studio in Ukiah was getting the use permit to install a 90-foot tower to serve as a studio transmitter link. KZYX has a satellite dish that receives national programming, but the tower is necessary to transmit local programming from the studio. KZYX has been in negotiations with Grace Liu's sons, who inherited the property after her death, and Dow expects bank transactions to be completed by the end of the week. He believes it will take several months to complete the planning and designing phase, which includes updating the electrical wiring, remodeling a bathroom to meet ADA requirements, and replacing the worn-out carpet. “Then we'll have to order equipment, which will take some time to get,” he said. “Everybody knows these days supply chains are difficult...the goal will be that we'd start some work on this before the end of the year, and that we would be doing inside construction...through the first half of next year.” On that timeline, the station would be ready to operate by mid-summer of 2022. In the meantime, the interview continued with a portable field recorder, starting in a big empty room with a wall of windows and a view of City Hall. Airplane noise was audible overhead, so soundproofing will be part of the upgrade. “This will be a good room for something,” Dow concluded. “It is accessible from the front, so it will be easy for the public to come in.” The main building is basically that large room and a foyer, leading into a long skinny hallway with studio-sized rooms on either side, plus a bathroom and a kitchenette. There is also a covered courtyard with two picnic benches and a much smaller building that will probably serve as office space for operations, management, and administrative staff. “It's a solid building and a good location on a nice property,” Dow reflected. “But we are going to have to do some upgrades to make it suitable for a broadcast studio.” Listeners will be hearing more details in the near future about the capital campaign, plans for improvements, and progress on the projects involved. As for Dow, he listed a few reasons he's willing to take it on. “The more secure and reliable our signal is, the better, so that we're there when we're most needed, in terms of emergency or road closures, or nowadays, covid updates.”
Have you figured out yet what God's plan is for you? Have you truly grasped what your passion is? Often, our passion turns into a career, or our mission, or sometimes, both. Join us today for a wonderful conversation with Grace about God's direction and provision.

Show Notes: 1. Overeating On Keto [2:08] Steve says: Hi Rob, I don't want to take too much of your time. But going Keto for me has found me doing exactly what I feared I could do. I have been Paleo for five or six years and so has my wife. We have no kids at home so grains and junky carbs are not and issue or even a temptation. I am in the middle of doing the keto masterclass, which I am savouring because I have been making some mistakes. I am 50 years old and work out regularly doing either mixed kettlebell workouts or if I do weight and resistance training at the moment I like to do whole body workouts 3 X a week and can mix in some cardio in between. I have kept fit most of my life, my goal is as I age to stay lean and keep mobile. Pretty simple goal. We live in Perth in Western Australia so we have great weather and lots of sun. I work as a gardener in a private school, a job I love doing as I'm outside and moving all day, not as hard as say some sort of construction worker but that can happen on a given day just not every day. Coming from eating paleo the transition for me has been pretty easy. As I went low carb and increased the fat I was eating my wife liked the sound of it so she hopped on board. She is doing great and in fact better than me. We aren't really that worried about measuring ketones at this stage, it has been more about getting the diet right. My issue is, I love the food. For some reason it has made me hungrier. Stocking our fridge and cupboards I made sure that we had all we needed and I wanted to see what I liked to eat also. So I have blown it on all sorts of things. I have had days where I ate too much thickened cream, one tub has 800 calories and it is so easy to eat. I have blown it on nut butter and blown it on cheese. I can't believe it. At first it was wrapping my head around the fat content. I think I get it now. But I have put on body fat, which is so annoying. It's not a train wreck but I feel like I am in a rut now and it's hard to get out. I don't want to quit because I can see and have felt the benefits. It's just with the fat content and my physiology there seems to be no room for error. I listen to your podcast and since listening I have gone to the ketogains website and worked out my macros. I was still tracking somewhat but some days I may have blown it by 5 or 6 hundred calories. I have come so close to quitting as for me it seems to have been an easy way to get fat rather the leaner. I'm not sure that you can help and not sure what else that I could tell you. Diet wise I have intermittent fasted for 3 or more years with differing protocols. Doing 16 - 20 hours is pretty comfortable. I workout in the mornings and often don't eat until lunch time or when I get home from work. My diet hasn't changed too much except I have eaten cream, which I am now over. Adding more fat to my meals. Cooking in butter eating nuts and doing other keto style things. Apart from that my diet is still pretty primal. I love veggies. I have for years done a version of Mark Sisson's big ass salad. Which would be my daily staple. Evening veggies could be broccoli with brussel sprouts maybe some Kale and mushrooms. Also we do milk Kefir but I try to keep that to a minimum. If you have any suggestions that would be great. Are there others that have had this sort of issue, going keto has made them fatter? Really enjoy your podcast and thanks for all of the really useful info that you have put out. I have also read your books. Best regards Steve 2. What's Up With Fiber & Kids? [8:58] Rory says: As part of restoring my own gut health, I've used prebiotic fibers in various doses based somewhat on Grace Liu's advice, and I'm curious if and when supplemental fiber would be beneficial for my daughter? Again assuming that she started off at a disadvantage because of the antibiotics, it seems to follow logically that prebiotic fiber would help her gut bacteria develop, and increase her overall health and resilience. Is that actually logical? And are there any cautions? Is there a certain dose that's age-appropriate, or do I just slowly increase until she has digestive upset? Should I mix fibers in order to feed a variety of bacteria, or are there certain fibers that are optimal for a young gut (i.e. what would a cavebaby be most likely to eat chew on for fun?). 3. Tips For Increasing Testosterone [13:07] Mads says: Hey Robb, In a previous Q&A, you talked about how muscle gain/hypertrophy is caused by calorie surplus and progressive overload. You also mentioned that gaining muscle is, without a doubt, easier if you have High testosterone. Calorie surplus and PO is easy, but how do I increase my testosterone? You mentioned that there are a number of different tactics that you can use? My testosterone is not low, but definitely not high either. I'm 27 and my testosterone is 640 ng/dL and my free testosterone is 16.36 4. SHBG Elevated On Keto/Carnivore [19:47] Eoin says: Since switching to keto I've noticed an increase in SHBG levels which brings down my free test. Total test has stayed high normal but was wondering how functional it is with the free portion bound up. DHEA is a bit low too. I feel great all in all but was just wondering what your thoughts are on that 5. Are Chicharrones (pork rinds) a Healthy Snack? [22:47] Isaac says: Hi Rob, Chicarones (pork rinds): are they a healthy snack? I've heard you indirectly mention them on the podcast some time ago, but I wasn't able to infer whether your opinion is favorable or cautionary. I'm an ultra-runner, and during peak training season will spend about 20 hours per week running. In the bad old days I would top off my calories with a gigantic bowl of cold cereal in the evening, or an enormous serving of lentils and rice. But then I got woke, started monitoring my blood sugar, and started looking for low-carb options to fuel. I'm already having two salads each day, huge amounts of veggies, and as much meat as I can stomach. So I'm just looking for some calories to fuel the movement. So are pork rinds okay? I avoid the flavored variety - the bags I buy just say "fried pork skin" on the ingredients list, and I dip them in sour cream. The best part is how easy it is to get an extra 1000 calories. And the flavor. Am I headed towards clogged arteries? Are pork rinds actually healthy in the way that bacon is healthy...? Thanks!! Love the show. -Isaac After submitting my question about whether pork rinds are an acceptable snack, I realized that Robb's answer might be 'we'd need to see your lab work'... So, in case it is relevant (and in case my question is selected for the show), here are some details. (I'd be glad to share the rest of the lab results, if they're relevant.) KANGSON. We have the (probable) location of North Korea's original enrichment site: Kangson, now called Chollima. This is probably the spot where the DPRK has been enriching uranium since the early 2000's, which has previously not been openly identified! Jeffrey, Grace Liu, and Dave Schmerler combed over information dropped by friend-of-the-pod Ankit Panda. Dr. Grace Liu, the Gut Goddess is on the podcast with us today. We’re exploring how having a healthy gut can lead to having a great butt. Dr. Grace Liu was in conventional pharmacy with drugs and prescriptions. Like a lot of her patients, she was following the SAD (standard American diet), and was getting fatter and fatter every year. She ended up having some very bad medical problems due to birth control, adrenal dysregulation, Hashimoto’s (but naturally reversed it), and became very overweight, fatigued and tired. She figured out that pharmaceuticals were not helping her health, and completely dived into bugs vs. drugs. We have good and bad bacteria growing in our guts. Dr. Liu teaches a microbiome protocol and brings back what is missing to regrow our tissues, all these things we need to restore our health. What do ladies need to know about the gut microbiome? Dr. Liu works with a lot of female executives, multi-tasking moms and athletes, sharing how to have the perfect microbiome. Our microbiome builds our health, and diversity is always better. She looks at what is a liability in the gut with testing. Technology is in its infancy, it can only tell us so much. At least the cost is coming down, but it’s still at around $5,000 for this testing. She looks at what is dragging the gut down. Antibiotics can wipe out a lot of good things and we need to replenish with probiotics and foods that contain lots of probiotics. Same with exercise. We need to go hiking, go to the gym, different things in nature where there’s different types of soils and bacteria. Many executives now work from home and may never leave the house. So our immunity isn’t helped when we are not exposing our guts to these bacteria. People used to care for ranches, and grow their own veggie gardens, weed their own yard, mow the lawn and not add stuff to water. Not anymore. Dandelions are a superfood and yet we have created a bunch of pesticides to kill them. The Biggest Mistake We’re Making to our Microbiome in Modern Day There is a strain that most of us don’t have. We can only get it from the legacy of our mother because we get it through vaginal birth. So many people today are missing this because of regularly scheduled c-sections. This same bacteria makes us happy and keeps us in a good mood. This bacteria, if we have it can get lost over time, but we can resurrect it with the right probiotics. Autoimmune conditions, cancer and diabetes are just a few diseases that start in our gut. Top 3 Tips to Improve our Gut Health We need to move. Most of us are very sedentary, especially those of us who are working from home. We’re talking aerobic infusion, get to 60 to 80% of heart rate. It makes our microbiome happy. Take a probiotic. Doesn’t matter what time of day you take it, just take it. There are some that are better on an empty stomach. Our ancestors took probiotics too…it’s called DIRT! Fuel it. Bad flora likes sugar. Dr. Grace gives us a list of superfoods that make our gut happy. Great Superfoods for Good Gut Health Brown or red rice or quinoa, these become fibers for us. Lentils or beans when they’re combined with rice. Red potatoes, yams, root/tuber vegetables. Lemon juice, or vinegars with green salad. Berries, multicolored vegetables and greens. Spirulina, chlorella and sea weed (algae) are also GREAT for the gut and awesome source for minerals. Check out this interview with Catharine Arnston, all about algae and it’s benefits. In this article you can read all the nutrition you can find in spirulina algae tablets, ENERGYbits, helps eliminate fatigue and hunger instantly, improves energy, wellness and your waistline all at the same time. What is SIBO and How do You Recognize it? SIBO is an acronym for Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth. It means the small intestine has a lot of overgrowth in it. We can clean it very slowly over time. We can tell we have it with cravings because we’re not absorbing our nutrients when we eat. How to Cure SIBO – Dr. Grace’s 7-Steps Step One – Eat Fermented Foods Step Two – Eat Resistant-Starch-Rich Tubers, Grains, Legumes and Pulses Step Three – Eat Soil-Based Probiotics Step Four – Eat BIONIC FIBER and Burn Body Fat Step Five – Exercise low-moderate intensity one hour daily continuously (10,000 steps) Step Six – Avoid allergenic foods (corn, soy, gluten/wheat, dairy, nuts, egg whites, etc). Avoid GMO products and livestock/poultry fed GMO crops (corn, soy, etc) Step Seven – Heal hormones and immunity — take adrenal support, liver support, antioxidants etc SIFO- Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth. No one is talking about it yet, but this is far worse. People who have had antibiotics have a lot more overgrowth than other people. They don’t necessarily have symptoms. It comes up as mental fog, PMS, cystic ovarian disease, fibroids, acne, schizophrenia, etc. Does Wine and Alcohol affect our Gut Health? Studies show that even a little bit of alcohol can hurt the gut if it’s already unhealthy. If gut health is good, then it’s no problem. Alcohol can cause brain fog. Dr. Grace offers some ideas of what you can take to protect yourself before you drink so you don’t feel the effects in your stomach and head. Same tips can be applied when eating gluten and dairy, especially when traveling. Check out this interview for more information on organic, non-toxic wines, and this article to find out what the toxins in wine does to our bodies. Dr. Grace’s take on Vaccinations Babies don’t have an immune system. Babies immune system is mom’s milk. So there’s no sense in giving babies vaccines from day one. Studies show that flu vaccines are not effective to do what they say they’re doing, compared to the placebo. When we inject all the mercury and aluminum that is in the vaccination, it’s really bad for our bodies. Sometimes they even contain allergens that some of us are sensitive to like dairy and gluten. To protect from flu, have a great microbiome. There’s a lot we can do to fix it. We can even do it on our own. Dr. Grace uses a lot of mushrooms, it’s good fungus and are super anti-candida and anti-fungal. Dr. Grace’s Ebook, Magic in Your Microbiome offers some great insight. 3 Habits the Gut Goddess has Developed to Ensure Healthy Gut Microbiome Lost of fiber Probiotics- Control is a great one that helps control weight as well Workout daily- tries for one hour a day, even if it’s just walking the dog, gym, lifting, running, kickboxing, dance to music and meditation.

In January 2014, young and talented Romanian engineer Fabian Popa was feeling fine when pneumonia struck from nowhere. He remembers coming home from work and feeling a burning sensation in his chest. After a short time coping with the coughing, severe fatigue set in and Fabian found himself unable to work. Having heard about the potential for unwanted effects caused by antibiotics, Fabian held out hoping the coughing would subside. After ten days he relented, and upon listening to his lungs, the doctor said: “Well, you have pneumonia. Take this antibiotic.” And that’s what he did. Fabian took Bayer brand Avelox, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. In the United States, similar drugs Ciprofloxacin ("Cipro") and Levofloxacin are more commonly prescribed. Everything was fine for a month, but then things started to go wrong in mysterious ways. The biggest signs that something was wrong were neurological in nature, and he experienced muscle weakness and twitching. Chronic diarrhoea set in and Fabian began to gain weight. After exhausting his options in Romania, Fabian moved on to to Germany where he eventually got a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this interview, Fabian speaks candidly about his recovery from "iatrogenic" injury. Iatrogenesis (from the Greek for "brought forth by the healer"), doesn't necessarily imply an error, but rather an unintended outcome. Had he not taken the medicine, Fabian might not have been here to talk about his recovery. But still, the unwanted effects of the antibiotics were severe. Fabian's story of recovery is incomplete but still inspiring. As an engineer, he applied his analytical and problem solving skills to blood chemistry, urinary organic acids, and stool culturomics to design a solution that consisted of diet and lifestyle modification and nutritional supplements. At the end of this interview, I asked Fabian: "Let me just check, you are feeling better than before aren’t you?" to which he replied: "Yes, of course [...] Maybe next time we talk, I can report that there’s autoimmune no more." Here’s the outline of this interview with Fabian Popa: 0:05:07 Fluoroquinolone antibiotics. 0:07:47 Hashimoto's thyroiditis. 0:18:43 Dr. Grace Liu, PharmD. 0:18:46 Dr. Tommy Wood, MD is the CMO at Nourish Balance Thrive. 0:19:33 Haptoglobin. 0:22:32 Diamine oxidase is one of the two enzymes that break down histamine, the other being Histamine N-methyltransferase. 0:23:06 Complement component 3 blood test. 0:23:59 Tumor necrosis factor alpha blood test. 0:25:37 Fabian used the autoimmune Paleo diet, my favourite guide is called A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol. 0:29:58 The Marshall Protocol (please don’t do this!) 0:30:48 Tim Ferriss podcast. 0:33:58 Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) at the Taymount clinic. 0:37:03 Justin Sonnenburg presentation at the UCSF Paleo Symposium. 0:37:04 Diet-induced extinctions in the gut microbiota compound over generations. 0:38:54 Stool culturomics can be superior to metagenomics [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8] 0:39:46 uBiome and my report tool. 0:40:32 Iatrogenic injury.
This episode is a little different. A joint experiment. A nebulous mission. In this inspiring international discussion, I was honored to be joined by two co-hosts: Dawna Jones of Vancouver and Gert Penne of Belgium. And three guests: Willow Bumby and Lindsey Henwood of Vancouver, and Josh Shaffer of Tampa. With 6+ participants, spanning 3+ countries, 3 continents, and 3 generations we explored not only the future of work, but also the future of education. Dawna Jones is the AUTHOR of DECISION-MAKING for DUMMIES. Her book appears on Steve Denning's (Forbes) list of 8 Noteworthy Books for 2014. Dawna is also the host of the “Evolutionary Provocateur” podcast. Gert Penne, an account executive in the tech industry, is a an Empathic Problem Solver, who takes a principle-centered approach to teaming across cultures, disciplines, and generations. At the end of a 2-continent, 3-country Skype call, Dawna, Gert, and I found ourselves talking about generational differences globally. With the goal to learn how the next generation sees the Future of Work, we decided to invite 3 Millennials to a follow-up call. This show is that call. Millennials fall just after the Gen-Xers. They were born between 1982 and 2004. We were fortunate to have 3 Millennials join us. Josh Shaffer is an early Millennial, and works for Accenture in Talent Acquisition in Tampa. Willow Bumby is an iOS Engineer, designer, and writer, as well as a teacher at Lighthouse Labs in Vancouver. Lindsay Henwood is a User Experience Design Instructor at Red Academy, a rapidly growing Tech School startup in Vancouver. Two other Millennials joined us virtually. Lauren Kirmil is a Marketing and Media Specialist and a former technical recruiter in the San Francisco Bay Area. During her extensive travels throughout Southeast Asia she worked as a freelance travel writer. Grace Liu is a former Outreach Support Officer at the British Consulate in Guangzhou, China. She recently received funding to start a venture in Shenzhen. With the assistance of her NYU professor she also plans to start an NGO incorporating ancient contemplative practices, including meditation. In this discussion we covered a wide range of topics. Distributed workforces and workplace flexibility and the big American offensive to change the workplace. Self-responsibility, self-awareness, self-perception. Cultural fit: the “techie” mold and the pressure to fit in. The dying days of the industrial model, the irrelevant university degree and the rise of bootcamp style education. The need to understand the next generation, and the companies which will die. The rise of the robots and the growing fear of job loss. Capitalism and its schizophrenic booms and busts: do we want an economy based on self-interest or creativity and collaboration? Tribalism and the need to belong: do we become global citizens or nationalists? Surviving the industrial model and designing the new workplace. The need to shift easily into different industries and the costly risk in over-specialization. The silliness of our current system and people's inability to work with power. And the power coming from the “Millennial values”.

I couldn’t help laughing when former UFC fighter Kyle Kingsbury described the trouble he was having deadlifting 525 lb when 495 came so easily. 180 is a problem for me! The ketogenic diet has removed Kyle’s “low gear”, but the sacrifice is worth it because, in the ketogenic state, Kyle enjoys an enormous cognitive benefit and less systemic inflammation. Having suffered two orbital fractures that ultimately lead to his retirement, I wonder if Kyle is an example of how ketosis can help with traumatic brain injury. Do not supplement with raw potato starch! Kyle and his wife are yet further examples of people that didn’t do well supplementing with raw potato starch. Kyle noticed changes in his immune system that lead to an increase in sickness, and his wife Natasha gained body fat. Both were able to resolve those issues following Grace Liu’s plan that included psyllium, acacia, and inulin-FOS together with a bifidobacteria probiotic. Welcome! Today’s guest is Dr. Grace Liu, who is a pharmacist and functional medicine practitioner. She is the “Gut Goddess.” Her expertise is in pharmacy nutrition and optimal health, and her training includes plant biology, food science, nutritional science, pharmacy, and Crossfit Nutrition. She and I met at the PaleoFX 2015 conference in Austin, TX, and I’ve been excited to have her on the show. Join us! Grace obtained a nutritional science degree, then took some time off before going to pharmacy school. She worked in traditional medicine for 13 years. She became really sick and then discovered Paleo and CrossFit. It was when she lived in China in 2008 that she began focusing on gut health, and this focus is what led her to specialize her practice in all aspects of gut health. Grace shares the following about gut health: Gut health is important for many reasons, but one reason is that 80% of the immune system is in the gut. Operating without proper gut health is like operating with only half of your brain! Grace uses a “tree” picture to illustrate each person’s microbiome, showing the branches of the different bacteria found in the gut. Many problems and health disorders are caused when the needed varieties of bacteria aren’t present. One problem is the presence of too many antibiotics in our society! If you aren’t feeling well, you probably need to replenish the needed bacteria. Grace discusses the inexpensive tests that can be done to assess the composition of the gut. Dysbiosis or SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) is common in the upper gut; sometimes a low carb diet can help. Grace explains the process of “weeding” as it applies to monitoring your gut flora. Grace shares her 7 Steps to Heal your Gut: Hormones in Digestion Bionic Fiber Probiotics Diet Exercise Weeding Fermented Foods Grace shares her favorite ways to heal the adrenals because of the gut connection: go to bed early, assess heart rate variability, and try hydrotherapy. Swimming seems to be a secret to health! The take-home action steps are: gut health is likened to what keeps our cars in good running order. “Good bacteria are the guardians of good health! Invite them in through probiotics and good nutrition.” You’ve learned the basics of gut health from Dr. Grace! Everyone can benefit from all that she has shared with us. Thanks for listening! In this episode we talk to Karl Seddon of Elixa probiotic, who has developed a new way of delivering large doses of bacteria to the gut. Dr. Grace Liu, PharmD, AFMCP, is a functional medicine practitioner with an international functional medicine practice that includes nutritional consultations, integrative laboratory analysis, and personalized counseling. I first became aware of her work last summer at the Ancestral Health Symposium where she presented the idea of an ancestral core microbiota. Over the past couple of years, I've been lucky enough to meet many gut experts. Dr. Liu is the first that can review a bacterial taxonomy from a fecal sample and give a meaningful research and practice orientated narrative. The taxonomy I have came from the results of taking part in the American Gut Project. A faster way to get hold of the data is uBiome. These tests are great if you're feeling pretty good. If you have any chronic health complaint, you will be better off first doing a test like the BioHealth 401H or Doctor's Data comprehensive stool analysis with parasitology. Dr. Liu's blog and podcast are fantastic resources for anyone interested in better understanding in the inner workings of the gut and improving their health. Look out for her next presentation at PaleoFX. In the interview, we mention the keystone species: Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Bifidobacterium longum and Akkermansia muciniphila, none of which I have! Prebiotics: glucomannan. Probiotics: Prescript-Assist.
