Yes, midlife 100% comes with its challenges (many of which we'll tackle together in Season 5 with the help of some fantastic experts and guests). But to kick off this season, I wanted to share three reasons why I think life post-menopause is pretty awesome. My favorite being that midlife is this incredible opportunity to transform your relationship with food and your body. I'll share how we can learn to work with our bodies rather than fighting them. Join us as we discuss how movement and food—focused on how it makes us feel, not how we look—can make the menopause journey more empowering and even fun.Plus, you'll find out where you can connect with me on YouTube and celebrate Menopause Awareness Month in October by joining my free Ditch The Diet Challenge, which includes bonus access to my Midlife and Menopause Undieter's Guide to Intuitive Eating mini-course.Welcome to Season 5 of the Midlife Feast! Welcome to another episode of the Midlife Feast! Today, we're diving into my favorite topic: intuitive eating and breaking free from the dieting cycle. Joining us is the incredible Dr. Alexis Conason, a US-based psychologist and author of Diet-Free Revolution. We're not just scratching the surface here; we're exploring the behavioral and emotional aspects of intuitive eating. Dr. Conason's approach, woven beautifully with storytelling, offers a fresh perspective that resonates deeply with those on the journey to reclaiming their relationship with food and their bodies.Whether you're a seasoned dieter or just dipping your toes into this paradigm shift, this conversation reminds us that we're not alone. Dr. Conason's insights reassure us that we're not broken, and perhaps most importantly, we're not to blame. In episode 81, we'll be discussing a topic you may not have heard of before: intuitive eating. Our guest, Dr. Jen Salib Huber, is a registered dietitian and naturopathic doctor who helps women manage menopause without diets or food rules. During this transition, many women experience weight gain and body changes, influenced by societal pressure for a certain size or shape. Dr. Huber works to normalise that bodies change for all kinds of reasons and aims to teach women to become intuitive eaters and build body confidence in midlife. I just know you will gain so much from this episode as we discuss topics such as: How it can feel like the carpet is pulled out from under us and nothing works like it used to in our earlier years. Assumptions about health, ageing, and body images that go against women as unique individuals. Natural vs managed menopause. Similar changes in our brains and hormone receptors in puberty and menopause. Weight changes in midlife (they aren't what we are led to think!) Un-dieting and retraining old cycles. If you would like to hear more from Jenn, I would love you to check out her podcast 'The Midlife Feast' at https://www.menopausenutritionist.ca/podcast where she helps women "undiet" their lives after 40 so they can nourish a relationship with food that helps them discover the magic of midlife! Here's to redefining midlife and making our next half of life even better than the first.
In this special story session, Christina Testut—a kindergarten teacher and champion of body acceptance—joins us this week on The Midlife Feast to share her inspiring un-dieting journey and the lessons that quarantine taught her about embracing body diversity. She shares why her weight-loss “success story” became unsustainable, physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a mother and educator, she recognized the urgent need to redefine beauty standards for impressionable young people and took a powerful stand by transforming her epiphany into a children's book celebrating all body shapes and sizes. You can grab the book Embrace Your Features, learn more about Christina and her work on her website, www.christinarunstheworld.com, and follow her on IG @christina_runstheworld or Facebook @christina.testut.Looking for a place to learn more about midlife, menopause nutrition, and intuitive eating? Celebrate with me as we toast to the 100th episode of the Midlife Feast! As you know, on every episode of the podcast, I ask my guests what they think the missing ingredient in midlife is. After revisiting the answers in 100 episodes, I want to share with you the top five insights that have reshaped our understanding of midlife and menopause. As we clink glasses to this journey, I'm celebrating all the incredible guests who have come to share their wisdom and experience, collectively reminding us this is not our mother's menopause. Here is a statistic for you. The average 45 year-old woman has been on 61 diets since the age of sixteen. This brought me back to the 1980s and 90s, the era of dexatrim, Ayds Candies, and Slim Fast. As a side note, the active ingredient in Ayds Candies and Dexatrim was the decongestant, phenylpropanolamine, which can be found in many cold medicines today. I almost forgot about fen-phen. Remember all the heart and legal issues with that drug? Then there were the popular, fad diets, such as the Cabbage Soup Diet, Beverly Hills, Scarsdale, and Grapefruit Diet, to name a few. It was actually simpler back then. Doing lots of cardio (OMG, the aerobics and step class craze) and starving yourself was the secret sauce, which we know is not a long-term strategy for anyone, especially us midlife gals. Diet culture is still alive and well, but today, we have to sift through all the stuff on social media, when all we want is the truth and straight answers in how we manage a body that we may no longer recognize. This is why I asked Jenn Huber to be a guest on the podcast.Jenn is a Registered Dietician, Naturopathic Doctor, podcaster, and intuitive eating advocate, who provides health and hormone education to women in midlife without a side of diet culture. She knows exactly what we are going through, and she wants to help you make peace with food, your body, and menopause so you can find the confidence you deserve in this great stage of life.Catch Jenn Huber's podcast, the Midlife Feast, wherever you get podcasts.Jenn's website: https://www.menopausenutritionist.ca/https://www.instagram.com/menopause.nutritionist/Follow Asking for a Friend on Social media outlets:https://www.instagram.com/askingforafriend_pod/https://www.facebook.com/askforafriendpod/Please provide a review and share. Send us a Text Message. A short solo episode today all about motivation and why it's often lacking when it comes to moving our bodies. The crux of the conversation today is our critical self-talk.How helpful is it for us to should all over ourselves when it comes to establishing a fitness/ strength training regime? Can we lower the bar when it comes to working out? ( Here I reference Dr Jenn Salib Huber and her podcast: The Midlife Feast.)But I hear you cry if I listen to my body, I'll never get up off the sofa! To be expected in fact. How can we make movement a little cosier? How can we find ease?Tune in and let me know you're thoughts! Are you feeling stuck in the 'earn and burn' cycle with your exercise routine, or as summer approaches, are you feeling self-conscious about wearing a swimsuit on the beach? Does un-dieting mean throwing in the towel and giving up on life? Absolutely not. Today I'm joined by my friend and colleague (for a second time) Dr. Jennifer Huber, a Canadian Naturopathic Doctor, Registered Dietician and Intuitive Eating Coach who's life mission is to help women make peace with food and their body in midlife. Why does this happen? We share what happens in midlife and why un-dieting might be the answer to support midlife changes. We dispel a ton of myths in this episode, including what “un-dieting” really means. We ask great questions like: “When did you first start having thoughts about food in a moral way?” “What is your first memory of someone being upset about their body?” We highlight how these small little series of events lead to subconscious learning about food and bodies, and how that continues to shape how women feel about food in midlife - and especially in midlife. Midlife has a lot of body changes, and when we mix this with women who are confused about food and their bodies, it leads to a ton of confusion and shame. If you've ever attached the meaning of life or your worth to the shape of your body, you'll want to tune in and listen to this safe, vulnerable conversation with two women on a mission to help you feel comfortable in your body. Dr. Jen offers many online resources for midlife women, has her own podcast, The Midlife Feast, and has online programs to support women on their journey to un-diet their life. You can learn more about Jen on her website www.menopausenutritionist.ca or follow her on Instagram.
In the first of our new bonus episodes, host Dr. Mary Jane Minkin is joined by Registered Dietitian and Naturopathic Doctor Dr. Jenn Salib Huber to discuss diet and nutrition during the menopausal transition. Jenn shares her extensive knowledge of how diet interacts with body weight and shape, and bone and cardiovascular health. The conversation also explores the deeply complex relationship between food and women's bodies, and how women can help heal this relationship during midlife. Jenn tells us, “We need to shift our frame of reference and move away from the idea that we should only have one body shape and size for the rest of our life.” Jenn also shares her love for food and packing her recipes with healthful ingredients that feed the soul, such as her favorite autumn go-to dinner, Tortilla Soup: Jenn's Tortilla Soup Recipe: Ingredients:1 Tbsp of olive oil1 medium onion, diced2 cloves of garlic, diced1 red pepper, diced1 can of black beans1 can of kidney beans1 cup of corn kernels (canned or frozen)2-3 chicken breasts4 cups of chicken broth1 can of diced tomatoes 1.5 Tbsp of taco seasoning (1 sachet)½ tsp of smoked paprika (optional) Toppings: tortilla chips, avocado, cilantro, sour cream, jalapenos, green onion, etc. Directions:Add olive oil to pan and sauté onions, garlic and red pepper until soft. Add chicken breasts, broth, diced tomatoes, taco seasoning, black beans, kidney beans and corn to pan. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally until chicken is cooked. Shred chicken breasts with 2 forks, remove from heat and serve with toppings! Notes: This is a perfect soup to throw in a slow cooker on a busy day! It also freezes well, so make more and save for a busy week! If using a slow cooker, cook for 4 hours on high. As so many of us enter perimenopause, our body shape starts to change and rather than embrace these changes we often punish ourselves with restrictive diets and/or feelings of low self worth. In this week's episode I chat to registered Dietitian and Naturopathic Doctor Dr Jenn Salib Huber. Jenn helps women find food freedom and escape the diet culture by teaching them how to eat in a way which is intuitive and enjoyable. Jen herself began dieting at a young age and went on to become a “professional dieter”. She longed to see the “thin ideal” staring back at her in the mirror for most of her adult years. But despite doing all the “right” things - exercising, trying every new diet AND getting two degrees related to nutrition - her body fought back.Thankfully the seeds of “intuitive eating” were planted somewhere along the way and she began making small shifts in how she responded to her body's needs. She no longer wanted to push her body to its limit, and instead she wanted to nurture it to its best. And now she helps others do the same!In this conversation, Jenn and I discuss:Why our bodies change at perimenopauseWhat the diet cycle isWhy restricting food doesn't work What body neutrality is and how it can help us expand our sense of worthWhy the majority of diets fail in the long term and often result in more weight gainWhat intuitive eating isWhy labelling foods as ‘good' or ‘bad' is not the answerWhat to add into your diet to help control peri symptomsWhy weight loss goals should be set aside when setting health goalsYou can follow Jenn on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/menopause.nutritionist/or visit her website https://www.jennsalibhuber.ca/ or listen to her podcast The Midlife Feast https://www.jennsalibhuber.ca/podcastYou can find me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pollywarrencoaching/ or email me info@pollywarren.com or visit my website https://www.pollywarren.com/
Today's episode of The Midlife Feast may not be of interest to everyone, but it's an important conversation to have as many women often find themselves trying to conceive after 40. And the hormonal changes that are happening in perimenopause can make getting pregnant, and staying pregnant, more challenging.Dr. Jordan Robertson ND is my guest today, and we talk about why fertility declines as we age, what hormones are involved in assessing fertility, why integrative approaches may be better than alternative ones, and why you shouldn't lose hope if you find yourself struggling to conceive.Dr. Jordan is a Naturopathic Doctor, author, and podcaster who is taking women's health research and making it more accessible for the everyday woman. Her mission is to create confident women's health consumers and help women learn to take care of themselves and their families with the best research in integrative and conventional medicine. If you're a woman, someone somewhere has a diet to sell you. If you're a menopausal woman, that diet is likely to paint carbs as the root of all your woes–and the elimination or restriction of them as your midlife salvation. This week we sat down with dietitian and “undiet” advocate Jenn Salib Huber, RD, ND, to dive into the ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, food phobia, and how diets can have unintended negative health consequences and fuel our food obsession rather than set us free. Jenn is a Canadian registered dietitian, naturopathic doctor, and Intuitive Eating coach. She helps women navigate the physical and emotional changes that happen in perimenopause and menopause, including their search for food freedom and body confidence. I'm kicking off season 2 of 'The Midlife Feast' with an episode for the family and friends of anyone who is in perimenopause and menopause. It's a mix of a bird's eye view of the hormonal changes at play, but also a compilation of feedback from over 100 women who are in perimenopause and menopause who shared how they're feeling as they go through this transition, and what they need from the people who love them. Intuitive eating is needed more than ever during midlife. That's because it helps redefine a woman's relationship with food in ways that create sustainable change. Whether it's listening to your body, avoiding all or nothing thinking about food, or denouncing diet culture, as my guest says: “it's really something that needs to come together for most women.” I found Jenn Salib Huber on Instagram as I started navigating midlife health and nutrition. She's a dietitian, naturopathic doctor, and intuitive eating coach. After her own experience with early perimenopause, she learned about intuitive eating and became well-versed in midlife health. Soon she realized this was how she wanted to help women. Jenn has a large presence on Instagram, runs online classes for women, and recently started up The Midlife Feast, a podcast for women hungry for more. We talk about both her personal and professional experience with midlife, what to expect at perimenopause, nutrition, common body changes and challenges, and how intuitive eating fits in it all.
Is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) everything it's cracked up to be? Who should (and shouldn't) use it? When, and for how long? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? These are just a few of the questions I cover in this episode of The Midlife Feast with my guest Dr. Annice Mukherjee, a consultant endocrinologist, hormone expert, and author of 'The Complete Guide to The Menopause'. Dr. Mkherjee brings her three decades of experience to the midlife table, along with her personal experience of going through early menopause due to a cancer diagnosis ten years ago.We discuss why women were scared off of hormone therapy in 2001, and what has changed in the past 20 years since the results of the WHI study were published. You can find out more about Dr. Annice and her book on her website: https://linktr.ee/annicemdFor information about how to work with me to make peace with food in midlife, visit www.jennsalibhuber.ca
