Two simple words, "what if" hold remarkable power over our lives, especially in midlife. In this heart to heart solo episode, we explore how transforming negative "what ifs" into questions of possibility can open doors you never imagined. Learn how to flip the script on fear-based thinking and embrace the freedom waiting on the other side of "what if I tried?"Key TakeawaysRecognise Your Fear-Based "What Ifs"Those 3 AM thoughts that keep you awake—"What if I fail? What if people judge me?"—aren't signs you're not ready. They're simply your brain's protective mechanism trying to keep you safe in the familiar. Acknowledging this is the first step toward change.Flip the Script on Negative ThinkingInstead of "What if I fail?" ask "What if it works out?" Rather than "What if I'm too old?" consider "What if I'm right on time?" This simple shift transforms paralysis into possibility and opens your mind to new opportunities.Consider the Cost of Not ChangingPerhaps the most powerful question to ask yourself: "What if nothing changes?" Imagine five years from now, still wondering "If only I had tried..." This reality check often becomes the turning point for women ready to reclaim their lives.Start with One Small StepChange doesn't happen in one giant leap. Real transformation comes through consistent, supported, and intentional movement. What's one small action you could take today toward the life you truly want?Make "What If" a Daily PracticeBegin each morning with a possibility-focused "what if" question: What if I put myself first today? What if I reached out for support? What if I let myself dream again? Just one positive "what if" can shift your entire perspective.Your Midlife Journey Is Just BeginningYou don't need to have everything figured out right now. You simply need to be willing to ask better questions and trust where they lead. Remember that your negative thoughts aren't reality—they're just one possibility among many. Your "what if" isn't the end of your story; it's the beginning of a new chapter where you step into your power and take full responsibility for creating a life that feels expansive and aligned.Ready to turn your whispers of possibility into action? From organising events for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to teaching meditation practices that transform daily life, Michelle Eckles brings practical wisdom to those feeling overwhelmed by life's demands. In this captivating conversation, Michelle shares how meditation pulled her from a place of chronic pain, overwhelm, and burnout to a life of intention and calm. Her journey proves that even the busiest among us can find peace through simple, consistent practices that don't require hours of our day.Key TakeawaysStart with just 10 breathsThe journey to mindfulness begins with breathing. Place one hand on your chest, one on your belly, and take 10 conscious breaths through your nose. This simple practice activates your parasympathetic nervous system, sending signals to your brain to calm down—no special equipment or extended time commitment required.Single-tasking is more powerful than we realiseContrary to popular belief, multitasking creates more stress and less productivity. Michelle suggests practising "single-tasking"—giving your full attention to one activity at a time, whether waiting for the kettle to boil or enjoying a meal without distraction. This simple shift reduces mental load and increases presence.Integrate mindfulness into existing routinesYou don't need to find extra time for meditation—transform everyday moments instead. While walking, focus on one specific element (counting dogs, noticing tree colours). During meals, just eat. When waiting, just wait. These micro-moments of mindfulness accumulate into significant mental clarity.Allow emotions rather than fixing themOne of the most profound benefits of mindfulness is learning to recognise and sit with emotions without immediately trying to fix or analyse them. This practice of simply acknowledging feelings. Recognising them, naming them, and feeling where they live in your body, can transform how you respond to life's challenges.Consistency matters more than durationFive minutes of daily practice delivers more benefits than an hour-long session once a week. Start small and build the habit. The transformative power lies in making mindfulness a regular part of your life rather than an occasional intensive experience.Your Next StepsReady to experience the benefits of mindfulness in your own life? Begin with the simplest practice: those 10 mindful breaths whenever you feel overwhelmed. Notice how this small action changes your stress response. From there, choose one daily activity to transform into a mindful moment. Perhaps your morning coffee or evening walk.Remember Michelle's wisdom: "You don't need to sit on a pillow for half an hour every day" to reap the benefits of mindfulness. Start where you are, with what you have, and watch how these small practices ripple through your life, creating more space, calm, and clarity exactly when you need it most.Michelle is a member of the Meditation Association of Australia and mindful.org and a Veriditas-trained and certified labyrinth facilitator.Visit https://mindfulnessworksaustralia.com.au/ and https://meditationaustralia.org.au/ to find registered teachers in your area. Her book, Cultivating a Calm Mind provides a guide to reducing anxiety, improving sleep and managing thoughts and emotions using mindfulness and meditation techniques. Are you feeling that persistent whisper that there's something more for you professionally? In this conversation with Christina, career and mindset coach, we explore the reality of career transitions in midlife. Christina shares her personal journey from feeling trapped in a role that affected her health and relationships to creating a business that allows her to help women find careers that truly align with their strengths and values. This episode offers practical wisdom for women navigating their own career crossroads — whether considering a complete change, returning to work, or simply seeking more fulfilment.Key TakeawaysListen to your intuitionThose persistent nudges and whispers are signaling something important. Christina encourages following these "breadcrumbs" as they often lead to your most authentic path, even when the destination isn't yet clear. You don't need permissionMany midlife women feel they need external validation to make career changes. Christina's message is clear: "You have our permission to step forward and take the courage to do what you want to do."Uncover your patternsReflect on what you've enjoyed most (and least) throughout your career. Look for recurring themes to identify your true strengths and values—these become your compass for future decisions.Small steps create momentumYou don't need to make dramatic changes overnight. Taking incremental actions—volunteering for projects, shadowing others, or developing specific skills—prepares you for when the timing is right.Self-worth drives changeThe biggest barrier for many women isn't external circumstances but internal beliefs about being worthy of the career they truly desire. Addressing these beliefs is often the catalyst for transformation. If Christina's insights resonated with you, take a moment to journal about that "one thing you've been avoiding" in your career journey. What small step could you take this week toward a more fulfilling professional life? Remember, life doesn't end at 50—for many women, including Christina, that's when it truly begins to flourish. In this candid solo episode, I dive into one of the most common challenges facing midlife women today: the gap between what we know we should do and actually doing it. After years of prioritising everyone else's needs, many of us have accumulated wisdom and knowledge about what would make our lives better, yet we remain stuck in patterns that no longer serve us. I share personal examples from my own health journey and professional transformation, offering a heartfelt invitation to move beyond information-gathering into meaningful action that creates real change in your life.Key TakeawaysKnowledge Alone Isn't Power - We often mistake learning for progress. Reading books, saving inspirational quotes, and listening to podcasts feel productive, but create only potential power. The real transformation happens when you start implementing what you've learned, even imperfectly.Identify Your Blocks to Action - Common obstacles include fear of failure, perfectionism, overwhelming options, guilt about putting yourself first, and identity confusion. Recognising which ones are holding you back is the first step toward breaking through them.Start Small to Build Momentum - Taking one tiny action creates a ripple effect. Whether it's setting a simple boundary, establishing a small wellness habit, or having that conversation you've been avoiding, small steps lead to significant shifts when done consistently.Create Accountability - Share your intentions with someone who will support your journey. Making your commitments known to others makes them more real and increases your likelihood of following through.Moving ForwardThe transformation you're seeking won't happen through intentions alone. It happens through your choices and actions. Your midlife chapter isn't written on someday; it's being authored right now through what you choose to do today. If you're ready to bridge the gap between knowing and doing with more support and structure, I invite you to book a free connection call with me to explore how my Reimagine Mentoring Program could help you take those first crucial steps.Remember, you don't need more time or perfect conditions to begin. In this conversation with radio broadcaster and author Sheridan Stewart, we explore her remarkable journey from Triple M rock chick to ABC presenter and published author. Beyond the glamour of interviewing rock stars and celebrities, Sheridan reveals how career transitions, personal struggles, and moments of clarity shaped her empowering approach to midlife. Her transformation from constantly striving to finally declaring "I have enough, I do enough, I am enough" offers powerful inspiration for women ready to rewrite their own stories.Key TakeawaysYour Past Gives You PowerSheridan's early experiences of resourcefulness and independence became strengths in adulthood. Those moments when you had to "figure it out" yourself have equipped you with resilience and courage that serve you today.Perfectionism Steals Your JoyWhen perfectionism and people-pleasing drive your decisions, boundaries disappear. Sheridan's journey through burnout during back-to-back emergencies (bushfires, pandemic, floods) reveals how caring deeply about your work can lead to harmful patterns that require intentional change.Press Pause to See PatternsSheridan's 90-day challenge to stop dining out and non-essential spending wasn't about deprivation but awareness. Sometimes we need to halt automatic behaviors to uncover the stories driving them. What might you discover by pressing pause on one habit for even a week?Midlife Offers a Powerful Choice"We don't go straight from parenting to grandparents," Sheridan explains. There's a "queen phase" between mother and crone where we have unprecedented freedom to redefine ourselves. This isn't about "becoming invisible" but choosing how and where to direct your energy and visibility.Action Creates MotivationWaiting to feel motivated before taking action backfires. As Sheridan discovered, "We feel good when we do what we have come on this earth to do." The actions come first, then the feelings follow. The most powerful question Sheridan asks herself when feeling flat is simply "What will I do to feel the way I want to feel?" This emphasis on personal agency and action over wishful thinking transforms everything. At 59, Sheridan took up dance classes in the dark where no one could judge her appearance or ability, proving it's never too late to discover new joys.Remember, as Sheridan would tell her future 80-year-old self: "Sweetheart, you are just getting started." This isn't about running out of time, but rather realising you don't have time to waste on what doesn't truly matter.Connect with Sheridan:Website http://www.sheridanstewart.com/Email iamsheridanstewart@gmail.comInstagram https://www.instagram.com/sheridan.stewart/Facebook https://www.facebook.com/sheridan.stewart.71Connect with me:Share your journey with me by sending me a message on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/joclarkcoaching/Email me your success story at jo@joclarkcoaching.com. What if midlife isn't something to endure, but rather your moment to finally create a life on your terms? In this powerful solo episode, I tackle the question that has transformed my own journey and that of countless women I've mentored: "If not now, when?" With three months of the year already behind us and time seemingly accelerating as we age, I invite you to stop waiting for the "perfect moment" and recognise that your time to thrive is right now. This conversation is for every woman who senses there's more to this chapter but feels stuck in uncertainty or overwhelmed by life's transitions.Key takeawaysTime Doesn't Wait - The average Australian woman lives to 85, but none of us knows our exact timeline. When you recognize time as your most precious non-renewable resource, you begin making deliberate choices about how you spend it rather than letting your days fill with obligations that don't truly matter to you.People-Pleasing Keeps You Stuck - Many midlife women have mastered the art of putting everyone else's needs ahead of their own, leading to resentment and disconnection from personal desires. Learning to set boundaries and politely decline what doesn't serve you creates space for what does.Small Steps Create Big Change - Transformation doesn't require dramatic life upheavals. The "all or nothing" mindset makes progress feel overwhelming to the point of paralysis. Instead, consistent small actions compound over time, making change inevitable when you stay the course.Clarity Requires Questioning - Many women feel lost in midlife simply because they haven't asked themselves what they truly want. Six essential journal prompts can help you rediscover your desires: What lights me up? What do I long for? What tugs at my heart? What would I do if I wasn't afraid? Where am I playing small? What do I want the next five years to feel like?Remember, you are allowed to want more, to change direction, and to rediscover your spark. Take that first step by dedicating just 10 minutes daily to something that brings you joy, speaking your dreams aloud to a supportive listener, or creating a "Someday List" and taking action on one item this week.If you're ready for more support, I offer one-off clarity calls and my six-week Reimagine framework. In this enlightening conversation with Ashley Longstaff, I share my journey from teaching for over 30 years to creating a new life in Noosa's hinterland. We explore the realities of midlife transitions — from career pivots and empty nests to health challenges and reimagining what comes next. This honest discussion reveals why midlife isn't something to merely survive but rather a powerful opportunity to create a life aligned with your true values and desires.Key TakeawaysThe Midlife Essence (40-65) is filled with transitions that can either overwhelm you or become catalysts for positive change. After decades of living for others, this is your opportunity to redesign life on your terms.Values Alignment is crucial for fulfilment. When feeling unsettled or restless, examine if your current lifestyle matches your core values. Many women experience dissatisfaction because they are living misaligned with what truly matters to them.Health Must Be Prioritised during midlife transitions. With 80% of women over 50 developing two or more chronic diseases, establishing strong health habits now is non-negotiable. Even small, consistent actions make a significant difference.Boundaries Are Essential for self-care. Start with small, non-negotiable commitments to yourself—like dedicated exercise time or morning rituals—and gradually expand these boundaries as your family adapts.Take 100% Responsibility for your life moving forward. Instead of waiting for circumstances to change, actively create the future you want through intentional choices. In this candid conversation, Dr. Sian Hebron discusses a topic many midlife women think about but rarely talk about: sex. As our bodies change, our sexual experiences change too. Dr. Hebron explains that midlife offers an opportunity to redefine our sexual identity free from societal pressures. Whether you are experiencing physical discomfort, body image concerns, or mismatched desire, this episode is for you.Key TakeawaysPhysical Changes Require Practical SolutionsDropping estrogen and testosterone can cause vaginal dryness and decreased elasticity. Dr. Hebron recommends vaginal estrogen treatments that should continue as long as you want to remain sexually active. For decreased sensitivity, gentle clitoral stimulators may help because only 25% of women achieve orgasm through penetration alone.Communication Is EssentialMany midlife women avoid discussing sexual needs with their partners, leading to misunderstandings and frustration. Dr. Hebron suggests dedicated time to talk outside the bedroom. Approach discussions honestly about what you're experiencing physically and emotionally while reinforcing why intimacy matters to your relationship. Partners often don't understand the physical changes women experience unless we explain them.Reigniting Passion Takes Playfulness and ExplorationTry resources like conversation card games (from organisations like The School of Life), educational platforms like OMG Yes, or simply make time for non-sexual touch and affection. Bringing back flirtation, dating, and playfulness can help couples rediscover each other sexually beyond established routines.Testosterone Can HelpFor decreased libido causing distress, testosterone supplementation may help. When it works (though not for everyone), it can significantly improve desire and mood. This requires medical supervision with proper monitoring, so discuss this option with a healthcare provider who takes your sexual health seriously.Taking Charge of Your Sexual WellbeingWhatever your current sexual experience—whether you're in a relationship, single, or not currently interested in sex—your needs and desires are valid. If your doctor dismisses your concerns ("Why worry about that at your age?"), seek another provider, try telehealth options for more privacy, or explore reputable resources online. Remember that pleasure and intimate connection can remain important throughout your life, and if sex is painful or unsatisfying, solutions exist. Start by having honest conversations with yourself about what you want, then with healthcare providers and partners who respect your needs. You deserve a fulfilling, intimate life on your own terms, whatever that means for you.Mentioned Resources:Book: "Good Loving, Great Sex" by Dr Rosie King https://www.penguin.com.au/authors/rosie-kingWebsite: OMG Yes (research-based platform on female pleasure) https://www.omgyes.com/joinThe School of Life conversation cards https://www.theschooloflife.com/shop/the-confessions-game/Esther Perel - Where Should We Begin Cards https://game.estherperel.com/products/where-should-we-begin-a-game-of-stories-2nd-editionConnect with meJoin Better Than Before: joclarkcoaching.com/better Share your journey with me by sending me a message on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/ Email me your success story at jo@joclarkcoaching.com. A little phrase that I love to say is that you're not too old, and it's not too late. For this solo episode, I dive into your thoughtful questions about navigating midlife with intention and purpose. From rethinking travel as a catalyst for personal growth to challenging outdated narratives about aging, we explore how this stage of life isn't about decline, it's about expansion. Whether you're struggling to slow down after decades of constant doing or wondering how to decide what deserves your precious yes, this conversation offers practical guidance for creating a life that truly reflects who you are becoming, not just who you've been.Key TakeawaysTravel becomes more meaningful in midlifeTravel isn't just about seeing new places, it's about stepping outside your comfort zone and expanding your view of what's possible. Midlife is the perfect time to explore, whether through local discoveries or overseas adventures. Travel teaches valuable lessons about letting go of control, embracing the unknown with a beginner's mind, and connecting with people across ages and cultures. Most importantly, new experiences can trigger profound "aha moments" that reshape your life's direction.Learning to be instead of always doingMany midlife women struggle with slowing down because we've been conditioned to equate productivity with worth. This constant doing isn't sustainable, and rest isn't indulgent—it's essential. Reframe relaxation as an intentional act of self-care by incorporating micro-rest moments into your day: sitting in silence, mindful eating and drinking, breathwork, or simply daydreaming again. Remember that nervous system regulation benefits your hormones, brain, and overall wellbeing.Making intentional choices about your yes and noMidlife calls for more intentional choices as your priorities shift and you realize time and energy are your most valuable resources. Before automatically saying yes, do a gut check: does this feel like a full-body yes or no? Signs that something might be a "should" rather than a real "hell yes" include feelings of resentment, exhaustion, or dread. Practice the pause method—don't respond immediately but take time to check in with yourself first.Challenging midlife mythsThe biggest myth about midlife is that it's a crisis rather than an awakening. The fear-driven belief that "it's too late" to start something new—whether a career, relationship, or passion—is simply untrue. You have more control over your future than you think through the countless decisions you make each day. Our generation has opportunities for reinvention that previous generations didn't, and we owe it to them and younger women to challenge outdated beliefs and create a new reality. What's Next For You?Ask yourself: "If nothing was holding me back, what would I do differently today?" You're not behind—you're exactly where you need to be, and the next chapter can be even better than what came before. This week, let go of at least one outdated belief about midlife and take one small action that excites you. Whether it's exploring somewhere new in your area, practicing saying no to something small, or simply giving yourself permission to rest without guilt, these intentional choices create ripples that transform your life.Have a question you'd like answered on the podcast? In this episode, Jo Clark welcomes podcast editor Christine Santos from the East Coast of the United States. Christine shares her journey from growing up in challenging circumstances with a hardworking single mother to building a 27-year corporate career and ultimately making the brave leap to entrepreneurship. When faced with caring for her stroke-affected mother while wanting to be present for her daughter's final years at home, Christine found the courage to redefine her path, discovering that the road to fulfillment rarely follows a straight line.Key TakeawaysSmall Steps Lead to Big ChangesChristine didn't leave her corporate job overnight. She took incremental steps—experimenting with t-shirt design, exploring podcasting, and following her intuition—which eventually led her to discover her passion for podcast production. As she puts it: "It's just taking that next step forward... you just start, and keep stepping forward."Intentional Choices, Not SacrificesWhen transitioning from corporate life, Christine made "intentional choices" rather than sacrifices. For example, she chose not to own a personal car to redirect those resources toward her business and family priorities. These deliberate decisions aligned her life with what truly mattered to her.Listen to Your IntuitionChristine reconnected with the intuition she had as a child by creating space to hear her inner voice. She suggests starting with small acts of following your intuition—like checking an unexpected place for lost keys—to rebuild trust in your guidance system.Build Your Support NetworkHaving support is crucial during major life transitions. Christine credits her husband's encouragement, her close friendships, and professional coaches for helping her navigate changes. She emphasises that "this is not a solo journey"—seeking connection through shared interests can lead to meaningful relationships.Find Joy in CreationChristine found unexpected fulfillment in creative work after leaving her structured corporate environment. Now, she eagerly anticipates each workday: "I enjoy what I do so much that I don't want to go to bed at night. And when I wake up in the morning, I cannot wait to start working."What would your 80-year-old self say about the choices you're making today? Christine hopes hers will say, "She chose the life that she wanted and made it happen." Your journey doesn't need to be dramatic—even small steps toward what brings you joy can lead to profound transformation. Take a moment to reflect: What brought you joy as a child that you've neglected? What one small intentional choice could you make this week to honor your deeper desires? The path may not be straight, but as Christine's story shows, each step forward opens new doors of possibility.Connect with ChristineEmail: hello@christinebsantos.comInstagram @christinebsantos https://www.instagram.com/christinebsantos/ Wonder Boldly podcast https://wonderboldly.com/podcast/www.wonderboldly.com LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/christine-santos-63307234/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrMuZeVnMl2o7pV-K8AsBeQ Connect with meJoin Better Than Before: joclarkcoaching.com/better Share your journey with me by sending me a message on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joclarkcoaching/Email me your success story at jo@joclarkcoaching.com. In this vibrant episode of the Redefining Midlife podcast, I chat with Ashley Longstaff, a colour analysis expert who helps women discover the colours that make them truly shine. From her fascinating upbringing as an expat child who attended 18 different schools to her journey from corporate PR to colour analysis, Ashley shares how finding your perfect colour palette can transform your wardrobe and your confidence. As midlife brings changes to our appearance and identity, understanding which colours complement our natural features becomes even more valuable.Key Takeaways:Your "Colour Season" Stays With You: While hair and skin change with age, your underlying "colour season" generally remains the same throughout your life. Ashley explains how the 12-season colour analysis system works and how it helps identify the colours that naturally harmonise with your personal features.Simple Tests to Try at Home: To discover if you lean "warm" or "cool," try holding white fabric against your skin, then cream. Notice which one makes your complexion look fresher and brighter. Similarly, pay attention to whether silver or gold jewelry makes your skin appear more vibrant.Baby Steps to Colour Confidence: If you're hesitant to embrace new colours, Ashley recommends starting small. Try incorporating your newly discovered flattering colours through accessories like scarves, earrings, or shoes before committing to larger wardrobe pieces. Midlife Style Evolution: As women transition through midlife (empty nesting, career changes, etc.), it's the perfect time to reassess your personal style. Ashley encourages women to ignore arbitrary fashion "rules" about age and instead focus on what makes you feel authentically good in your clothes. Carving Out Identity Beyond Roles: Ashley shares her personal journey through health challenges and raising teenagers while rediscovering herself. She emphasises the importance of making time for personal interests beyond being a wife and mother. What's Next?Ready to discover which colours bring out your natural radiance? Ashley offers virtual colour analysis services where she'll analyse photos of you with different colours to determine your perfect palette. She'll provide 30 colours in your primary palette, plus makeup recommendations tailored to your specific colouring.Remember that confidence in midlife isn't about following arbitrary rules—it's about embracing what makes you feel authentically you. Whether you're navigating changing hair colour, hormonal shifts, or simply wanting to refresh your style, understanding your personal colour palette is a powerful tool for expressing your true self.Listen to the full episode to hear more about Ashley's journey and her practical advice for using colour to boost your confidence at any age.Links mentioned in this episode:www.lovingcolour.au/colouranalysis - Virtual Colour Analysiswww.instagram.com/lovingcolour__ - Follow Ashley on Instagramhttps://www.lovingcolour.au/podcasts/life-in-colour - Life In Colour Podcast You can also find me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/ and LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joclarkcoaching/Here's to redefining midlife and making our next half of life even better than the first.
This solo episode is going to be different. It came about after I asked my community on an Instagram story a couple of weeks ago what they would like to know or ask me. I mentioned that depending on how many responded, I'd create an episode using these questions. Let's say I've got more than enough questions for several episodes, but today, I'm just going to answer five of these questions, and I'll return to the other ones in future episodes. Key TakeawaysStress Management: Your Personal ToolkitCreate your daily stress management toolkit with practices that resonate with you. Whether it's meditation, movement, nature walks, or journaling, consistency matters more than perfection. Remember: managing stress isn't about quick fixes—it's about building sustainable daily practices that keep you grounded through life's ups and downs.Feeling Lost? You're Actually GrowingThat feeling of being lost isn't a setback — it's a sign of growth and transformation. Take time for self-reflection to discover who you are beyond your roles and responsibilities. Start with small steps: journal about what brings you joy, what skills you've developed, and what dreams you hold for your future. There's no need to have it all figured out at once. The Power of MeditationRegular meditation practice can transform how you think, feel, and navigate daily challenges. In this episode, I sit down with Professor Susan Davis, a world-renowned endocrinologist and women's health researcher with over 40 years of experience. She is Head of the Monash University Women's Health Research Program and holds a Level 3 NHMRC Investigator Grant. Susan is a Consultant Endocrinologist and Head of the Women's Endocrine Clinic, Alfred Hospital Melbourne and a consultant at Cabrini Medical Centre. She is a Fellow and Council Member of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.Susan's research spans basic science to clinical trials and has been pivotal in our understanding of sex hormones in women in multiple non-reproductive target tissues including the brain (cognition, mood, sexual function), cardiovascular system (lipids, vascular function and coagulation) and other tissues (fat, muscle, joint cartilage and bone).Susan was one of five founders of Jean Hailes for Women, is a past President of the Australasian Menopause Society and International Menopause Society. She has 435+ peer-reviewed publications and has received numerous prestigious research awards. In 2022 she was also awarded the Medal of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. From questioning conventional wisdom about hormone therapy to conducting groundbreaking research that's changed how we understand menopause, Professor Davis brings clarity to a topic often clouded by misinformation and marketing hype.Key TakeawaysMenopause reality checkContrary to popular belief, about 70% of women don't experience severe menopausal symptoms. Those who do have significant symptoms typically improve within the first few years after menopause. This knowledge can help women approach this transition with less anxiety and better preparation. Hormone therapy truthThe decision to use hormone therapy should be primarily symptom-driven. It's proven effective for managing classic menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, sleep issues, mood changes) and preventing bone loss. Still, it's not a universal requirement or an anti-ageing solution. Professor Davis emphasises that there's no one-size-fits-all approach.Beyond hormonesMany symptoms attributed to menopause might have underlying causes. Key tests include iron levels (especially if fatigueD), thyroid function, and zinc levels. This highlights the importance of comprehensive health screening during midlife.Navigating informationWith the rise of menopause-related content on social media, it's crucial to fact-check information against reliable sources. Professor Davis recommends consulting websites of professionsal organisations for evidence-based information. As you navigate your midlife journey, remember that this phase of life deserves thoughtful attention and informed care. While hormone therapy can be transformative for those who need it, creating a healthy lifestyle foundation through regular exercise, stress management, and proper nutrition remains crucial. In this powerful episode, we meet Luan, whose unexpected breast cancer diagnosis at 46 transformed not just her life path but her entire approach to healthcare advocacy. Her journey from a working-class background in northern England to becoming Australia's leading voice in patient self-advocacy reveals how life's challenges can unveil our true purpose. Luan's story demonstrates that our past experiences - even those that seemed insignificant at the time - can prepare us for our most important work.Key Takeaways1. Early detection mattersLuan's cancer was discovered through her first mammogram at 46, four years before the standard screening age. Her decision to get checked despite having no apparent symptoms highlights the importance of being proactive about health screening.2. The power of self-advocacyThrough her experience, Luan discovered that patient self-advocacy isn't just for when things go wrong - it's a proactive approach that should begin from day one. It involves knowing yourself, understanding your rights, and effectively communicating your needs to healthcare providers.3. Information is empowermentWhen facing health challenges, Luan recommends gathering information from three key sources: medical professionals, evidence-based resources, and community experiences. This triangulated approach helps inform better questions and leads to more productive conversations with healthcare teams.4. Finding purpose through challengeWhat started as sharing her reconstruction journey on Instagram evolved into creating Australia's first podcast about reconstruction after mastectomy (Rewritten Me) and launching a broader platform for patient advocacy (Regarding Me). Her story shows how personal challenges can become stepping stones to helping others.Moving Forward TogetherIf you're navigating a health challenge or supporting someone who is, remember that you have the right to participate in your healthcare journey actively. In this episode, we dive deep into the often-overlooked challenge of navigating menopause in the workplace with Jodi, a passionate advocate for menopause-friendly workplaces. From her personal journey of experiencing unexplained symptoms while in an executive role to her transformation into a champion for workplace change, Jodi shares candid insights about the critical intersection of menopause and professional life. Her story illuminates the urgent need for better workplace support and understanding, especially given that 80% of women experiencing menopause are in the workforce. Key Takeaways: The Hidden Impact Three out of four women experience menopause symptoms, with one in four considering leaving their jobs due to these challenges. The most common workplace impacts include anxiety, brain fog, and loss of confidence – symptoms that often interconnect and compound each other. Breaking the Silence While menopause affects the fastest-growing demographic in the workplace, many women struggle to initiate conversations with managers about their needs. The key is preparation: choosing the right time, focusing on work impacts, and suggesting specific adjustments that could help. Creating Supportive Workplaces Essential elements of a menopause-friendly workplace include awareness and education for all staff, flexible work options, supportive policies, and practical accommodations like quiet rooms or better ventilation. Small changes can make significant differences. Economic Impact With one in ten women leaving their jobs due to menopause symptoms, the cost to businesses and women's long-term financial security is substantial. This talent drain affects not just individual careers but also organisational knowledge and leadership pipelines. Ready to take action? Whether you're experiencing menopause symptoms at work or are in a position to create positive change in your workplace, the time to act is now. Start by educating yourself and others about menopause's workplace impacts. Remember, you're not alone. 80% of women go through menopause while working, and there's growing support for workplace accommodations and understanding. Reflect month by monthTake a look back at the past year, month by month, using tools like your calendar, diary, or photo gallery to jog your memory. This process helps you uncover forgotten moments, both big and small, that shaped your year. Examples: A coffee date with an old friend. Completing a long-awaited project. A walk in nature that cleared your mind. 2. Celebrate your winsPause to honour your achievements, big or small, and recognise moments where you showed up for yourself or others. Examples: Setting boundaries in a problematic relationship. Staying consistent with a self-care routine. Finding joy in everyday moments, like family laughter or a quiet morning coffee. 3. Reflect on challengesIdentify the challenging moments you faced and the lessons they taught you. This isn't about dwelling on the negatives but recognising how those experiences helped you grow. Examples: Navigating a health challenge and learning to prioritise rest. Saying no to draining commitments. Discovering your resilience during a difficult situation. 4. What would you do differently?Think about moments where you could have approached situations differently. This isn't about regret but gaining clarity for the future. Examples: Responding to frustration with patience instead of anger. Overcoming self-doubt to seize an opportunity. Being more proactive in addressing a challenge. 5. Choose a guiding word for the yearSelect a single word to act as your anchor or compass for the year ahead. This word should represent what you want to embody or focus on. Examples: Abundance—seeing richness in everyday life. Ease—embracing simplicity and calm. Growth—focusing on personal and professional development. Following these steps will give you clarity and direction for the new year, ensuring you move forward with intention and purpose. Neurodivergence in women often goes unrecognised, especially during midlife, a stage filled with transitions that can bring these differences into sharper focus. In the third episode in our series, I sit down with Dr. Sascha Kowalenko to explore how neurodivergence, including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), uniquely manifests in women. Dr. Kowalenko shares her professional expertise and deeply personal story, offering listeners a compassionate lens to better understand themselves or the women they support. Tune in to hear about: What is Neurodivergence? A natural difference in brain structure and functioning that affects how individuals process the world around them. Historical Roots: The term neurodivergence originated in Australia, thanks to Judy Singer, who reframed these differences as variations rather than deficits. Gender Bias in Diagnosis: Diagnostic criteria often focus on male presentations, leading to the underdiagnosis of women, who tend to mask symptoms due to societal pressures. Midlife as a Turning Point: Hormonal changes in perimenopause can intensify neurodivergent traits, prompting many women to seek formal diagnoses or reassess their experiences. Personal Journey: Dr. Kowalenko candidly shares her experience of identifying with ASD later in life, highlighting the internalised and hidden nature of these traits in women. Challenges and Vulnerabilities: Neurodivergent women are at higher risk of social isolation and trauma, underscoring the need for awareness and tailored support. The Role of Acceptance: Dr. Kowalenko emphasises the importance of self-understanding and societal empathy in empowering neurodivergent women. Support Strategies: Curiosity, kindness, and validation go a long way in supporting neurodivergent loved ones. This episode is a powerful reminder that understanding neurodivergence isn't just about awareness; it's about celebrating and supporting the incredible diversity of experiences in women, particularly during midlife. Today's topic will resonate with many of us in midlife—a time when we feel the pull toward authenticity and self-discovery. We're diving into the idea of “unbecoming”. A journey of shedding what no longer serves us and reconnecting with our truest selves. This episode is especially for those looking to release old expectations, labels, and limiting beliefs to live a more genuine and fulfilling life. Inside this solo episode, you will find: The concept of unbecoming. Recognising that midlife can be a season to release societal expectations, old labels, and stories we've outgrown. My personal journey and shifts. I share my personal experience of stepping away from a long-held career as a teacher and how this decision was a catalyst for personal growth and transformation. Understanding that unbecoming isn't about replacing one identity with another is a gradual, often challenging process of unlearning and self-discovery. Embracing midlife shifts such as children leaving home, caring for ageing parents, and facing menopause—all of which prompt questions like, “Who am I now?” and “What do I truly want?” The power of letting go. Exploring how letting go of old roles, expectations, and limiting beliefs makes space for new dreams and passions. Encouraging women to reconnect with old dreams, explore new interests, and find what truly brings joy and fulfilment. Unbecoming can feel daunting, but it's also rich with possibility. Embrace this time as a chance to live more authentically, to be the woman you're meant to be. Thanks for listening, and here's to peeling back the layers to reveal a truer, brighter you! Thank you for tuning in today, and here's to embracing every step of our transformation with excitement and hope. Megan believes that midlife for women is a season which shapes how we view everything that has happened to us, who we are right now and what's next. Megan has been on her own personal and leadership journey and is the founder and CEO of Women Rising, which has sparked her passion for helping thousands of women globally lead confidently and thrive. As we start to unhook, unlearn and reprogram in midlife, we face societal pressures and negative biases. In this fantastic episode, Jo and Megan explore how women rise in midlife and discuss: Megan's early life, including creation, creativity, expression, freedom, and not wanting to be pinned down, chronic fatigue at 21 and the sense of tapping into something bigger and being guided by intuition. Megan worked 18 hours a day worldwide. While she loved it, she also lost herself, to the point of many burnouts. Systemic biases that exist in a patriarchal system and how to navigate that. Shift the conversation to more of a win-win scenario by calling men in, not calling them out. Compared to what is best for us, the impact of a gendered construct of leadership and what an ideal looks like in society. Rather than shapeshifting ourselves and trying to fit a square peg, a round hole. How much of our daily life can be driven be a should in your head. The musts that are ingrained beliefs and expectations that are guided by a sense of urgency and doing it now, which creates havoc on already fractured nervous systems. Turning our inner critic voice into an ally. The 13 different archetypes, as mentioned in her book. I highly recommend that you read Megan's book, which can be found at https://megandallacamina.com/womenrisingbook/ and follow Megan on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/women-rising-co/ You can also find me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/ and LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joclarkcoaching/ Here's to redefining midlife and making our next half of life even better than the first.
Ali Flynn's life story is one of true inspiration, a narrative of overcoming the seemingly impossible and turning life's struggles into a foundation for incredible strength, unwavering determination and, above all else, resilience. Her journey, shared so eloquently on the Redefining Midlife podcast, shines a spotlight on the transformative power of resilience and the human capacity to rise, no matter how often life knocks us down. To say this episode is full of inspiration is an understatement, as Jo and Ali talk about: Growing up in a challenging environment, facing violence and sexual abuse. Yet, even as a child, she possessed an innate sense that her future could be different. Excelling academically and athletically, driven by a desire to transcend her circumstances. Education and self-improvement became her refuge and means of escaping an unstable home. How she faced severe health battles, including a rare brain condition that resulted in strokes and a subsequent diagnosis of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). How Ali adopted a fierce attitude toward recovery. Setting out to conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges, becoming a triathlete as part of her journey to reclaim her health and life. The role her family plays in her life. Her husband stands as a pillar of unwavering support, having shared her journey through thick and thin. Additionally, Allie's three daughters inspire her as much as she inspires them, embodying resilience and positivity in the face of adversity. What underpins Ali's journey is a choice — choosing to get better rather than bitter, to focus on what one can control. This mindset shifts perspective, transforming adversity into opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Ali's story is a testament that resilience is not innate but cultivated through life experiences and conscious choices. As your child steps into adulthood, you are also stepping into a new phase of your own life, which requires letting go and moving forward. In this solo episode, I am drawing on my own experience, which is both bittersweet and exhilarating. Specifically, I am discussing the major milestone when your child finishes high school. Feelings of pride, loss, excitement, and anxiety are natural and valid because this transition is not only about their new chapter; it's also about your new chapter. Listen in as I chat about: Many parents, like you, are navigating these emotions and rediscovering themselves after dedicating many years to nurturing, guiding and supporting their children. You are not alone in this journey. Facing the fear of the unknown as your role shifts and you rediscover yourself. Reconnecting with yourself after your needs have taken a backseat. Shifting family dynamics as the relationship with your child changes. Moving forward with intention by celebrating achievements and milestones. While this is a time of change, it doesn't have to be a time of loss. You are stepping into a new phase filled with growth, potential, and endless opportunities. Take this moment to reimagine your future, reflect on what truly matters, and move forward with courage and confidence. Remember, it's your time too. I met today's guest at a networking lunch a little while ago, and right then and there, I knew her story would inspire my listeners. She has experienced incredible highs and devastating lows in her personal and professional lives. And in those times of adversity, Joanne has not given up and has founded over 17 companies throughout her career. Today, Joanne shares some of her life's incredibly personal and challenging times, and I thank her for being so open and honest. Tune in to hear about: Growing up with an old-school father who relocated her family and brought some businesses along the way. Unable to attend university, how she cracked into the male-dominated accounting profession and gained confidence in doing so. A devastating accident that revealed a hidden secret. How it has taken 20 years for Joanne to talk openly about her story. How she faced the daunting task of liquidating her own $30 million business. Today, Joanne is a business resilience coach, professional speaker, panellist, and emcee who focuses on guiding women to create sustainable and adaptable businesses that can thrive in any environment. If you want to shift your inner dialogue about ageing, Faith Agugu is the woman to have in your corner. She is an Australian leader in the global positive ageing movement and the visionary behind Silver Sirens, a 50+ community which imagines ageing as something you walk towards and embrace. After migrating from her native Nigeria and attending school in London, Faith spent three decades of her earlier years in the fashion industry, working as a catwalk model, and launched her own business, Raw Fashion Agency, in her new home country, Australia. Listen in to hear Faith's incredible life story. The points discussed include: How innovation and leadership appeared in childhood and continued throughout her life. Letting go of relationships when you have outgrown them. Being a childless woman and the emotional distress, grief, and depression that Faith experienced at the time. Rehabilitation after heavy alcohol use and getting herself back on track. Forced menopause through hysterectomy. Being absolutely comfortable with her age and leading the way for women across the world. Faith suggests that we get out of our own way and smash through the beliefs that it is too late to begin. As we redefine our midlife, we start to lessen the baggage we've been carrying around for decades. What used to weigh us down and keep us up at night, doesn't seem as relevant anymore. Now, it isn't an overnight process and can be both confronting and comforting at the same time. In this episode I am talking about the power of editing in midlife, with topics touched on such as: Aligning our values and becoming more discerning with our time, energy, relationships and goals. Transitions that happen parallel to each other, including empty nests, shifts in career, or expectations that no longer feel right for you. How life accumulation can feel that it weighs us down. Becoming protective of our time. Beauty and freedom in simplicity. Finding strength and realisation in the choice. Midlife is a chance to reclaim your agency over your life and to make conscious decisions about who you are and how you want to spend your time. Editing on your own takes time, and you don't have to do it alone. Midlife certainly comes with a myriad of health complexities, meaning we can be left feeling stranded at times. Dr Hebron is a member of the Australasian Menopause Society, which reflects her commitment to supporting women through all stages of midlife. This conversation is filled with knowledge and information as we cover topics such as: Alcohol consumption, its health risks, and the need for support in dealing with lifestyle changes. The significance of thorough GP consultations and adequate time and support for women. Understanding Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) Private prescription costs, government support, and treatment options Overmedicalisation of Menopause DHEA, HRT and more! The episode is a comprehensive guide on how women can navigate midlife challenges with informed, compassionate healthcare. At this end of this episode, I also ask Dr Hebron specific listener questions. Please note, this is general advice only, because she hasn't sat down with that particular woman to get important background information. How it is for any age and time to start discussions around reproductive functioning, even as early as puberty. Breaking down what is an eating disorder and how it can look different for different women. How types of eating disorders seem to differ at different stages of life and for different genders. It's never too early to seek support, and how it can be hard to notice signs and symptoms. The different aspects of eating disorders and how they present themselves, for example, finding it difficult to engage in social eating, excessive time in the gym or body dissatisfaction. Talking to someone about an eating disorder. Changing body compositions in midlife and how we are not meant to stay the same weight our entire lives. Different cultures and attitudes towards eating disorders. As you'll hear throughout the interview, Gemma's drive and passion is leading to many world firsts that will benefit women for years to come. If you think it could benefit another woman, I would love for you to share this episode. In this episode, you'll meet a special woman on the podcast. In fact, many themes in her story will likely sound very familiar, and I'm sure are going to resonate with a lot of women. She was working long, unsustainable hours that ultimately left her feeling exhausted and depleted, and this resulted in a full-body burnout. In Kirsten's words, I wasn't living. I was barely surviving. While there were many long dark days, Kirsten's life is now very different. With time, support, and learning the powerful nurturing practices of breathwork and meditation, Kirsten has completely transformed, and she's healed her mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Listen to this episode to hear more about: Owning a business and making the decision to sell it and let it go to be more present for her family. Post-business adaption to management roles took a toll and led to chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The other side of perfectionism and people-pleasing. How Kirsten was living a disconnected life and fell into a pattern of pushing and doing, doing, doing. Meditation, breathwork, and diversification are important in her healing and on the road to recovery. It is clear that Kirsten is cultivating more calm, balance, harmony and freedom back into her life and working to thrive and to experience a very different way of life. During the recent hundredth-episode celebration of the podcast, my friend and guest, Tracy Harris, asked me to share three actionable steps we can take to redefine ourselves and our lives today. While her question came as a surprise, my answers were heartfelt. In this episode, I expand and delve deeper into the three steps and how they can redefine your midlife. Tune in to hear about: Challenging your absolutes. Questioning our beliefs, assumptions and narratives and how it can open up possibilities. I talk about my firsthand experience within my career in education, believing I would be a teacher until retirement. Prioritising your health and wellness. Your health in your seventies, eighties, and nineties is influenced by the choices you make today. Many women spend their final years frail and in pain. However, small changes now can profoundly impact your future well-being. Choosing your inner circle wisely. Surround yourself with people who share a growth mindset, who motivate you, and from whom you can learn. It extends to who you follow on social media, the shows you watch, and the podcasts you listen to. All these influences shape your mindset and energy. You alone have the power to redefine your life. You can edit and change your inner circle, reassess your health priorities, and challenge the limiting beliefs holding you back. How her midlife journey took a challenging turn in her early forties. She experienced intense stress, emotional turmoil, and physical discomfort, which she later identified as symptoms of perimenopause. How chronic stress exacerbates hormonal imbalances, leading to a range of physical and emotional symptoms. There is no doubt that by the time women reach midlife we have had our fair share of experiences. My guest today has gone through more than lots of women put together and she talks about it easily and freely now which is why this episode will be recapping part 1 of 2. Before diving into the details, I would like to recognise that these discussions can be triggering for some and encourage you to prioritise your wellbeing while listening along to our conversation. Bev Williams-Krause is an incredible individual who shares her stories of cancer treatment in her early twenties, mental health challenges, pregnancy loss, grief and heartache, her immigration and more. I have no doubt you will be as mesmerised as I was by this fabulous woman as we discuss: How her life is a treasure of stories and much more than meets the eye. Her dream of moving to Australia from Birmingham in the UK at around eight years old and eventually landing safely at age 48. How freedom in her childhood both benefited her and helped her learn a few lessons along the way! Responses from her body when getting pregnant and the gratitude for teamwork as she was finally able to carry her daughter to 28 weeks. Differences in the responses from medical professionals decades ago in comparison to current practices. Trying to compartmentalise our lives to the point where everything bursts open. Mental health breakdowns and how she navigated through a long healing and still uses many tools today. This conversation is rich with stories that are bound to touch your heart in many ways. She is a truly inspirational midlifer and her positive nature is infectious. I encourage you to follow Bev via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theirismaystyle/. In episode 95 of the Redefining Midlife Podcast, I'm revisiting a compelling conversation with neuroscientist Dr. Sarah McKay.The menopause transition can give a smorgasbord of brain-based symptoms that, for some women, can be debilitating. On the podcast today, we're going to find out exactly what's going on with our brain during this time with Australian-based, Kiwi-born, neuroscientist Dr Sarah McKay. Sarah is the director of The Neuroscience Academy, which offers professional development training in applied neuroscience and brain health. The best thing is that she makes it easy to understand and considers recent scientific developments. In this powerful and insightful discussion, I chat with her about: Gender equality and how medical sciences are adjusting, as well as the impact and change that this has on research and questions currently being explored within neuroscience. Pregnancy and motherhood through the lens of neuroscience and positive upsides that carry through to midlife. HRT culture, past and present. Hindsight and a better understanding of past research, alongside how it can assist women currently going through symptoms in midlife. How the brain adapts as we settle into midlife and the physiological changes we experience in our bodies. Influences of melatonin, adrenaline, oestrogen and progesterone in the neuroscience realm. The importance of sleep. How much does it impact so many cognitive functions and brain abilities, especially in midlife? Genetics and breaking the cycle by investing in your health and well-being. Whether you're in your forties, fifties, or beyond, this podcast episode serves as a potent reminder that midlife is a fabulous stage brimming with potential and opportunity. I encourage you to learn more about her work through her books The Women's Brain Book — The Neuroscience of Health, Hormones and Happiness and Baby Brain — the surprising neuroscience of how pregnancy and motherhood sculpt our brains and change our minds (for the better). Amid the whirlwind of responsibilities, many women lose their spark and sense of joy. This episode serves as a reminder that finding joy in small, everyday moments is possible and essential for our well-being. Listen in as I explore the importance of joy and talk about: Practical ways to include joy include morning rituals, mindful breaks, creative expression, and connecting with loved ones. Small bursts of happiness can significantly enhance our mood, reduce stress, and improve overall life satisfaction. Prioritising joy and happiness now, rather than waiting for the perfect time. How you are better equipped to handle life's challenges and support those around you with joy. Biochemical changes have a positive impact on our physical health, lowering blood pressure, improving immune function, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. I hope this episode has inspired you to start looking for those small moments of joy and to prioritise your happiness. You are worthy of joy, and it's never too late to start finding it. If you're constantly tired, don't sleep well at night, or feel the effects of the mid-afternoon slump, today's episode is for you. Thea O-Connor joins me today, and we're talking about naps. Thea O'Connor is a senior workplace wellbeing advisor, speaker and coach. She helps leaders, teams and individuals improve their workplace engagement and effectiveness through body intelligence and better health. She draws on 30 years of experience in health promotion including in the fields of nutrition (as a dietitian), body image, sleep science and workplace health. Listen in for this fascinating episode which covers many topics including: Biological rhythms that have us feeling droopy by mid-afternoon and the bigger life stage rhythms such as menopause. What does that mean for our nervous system. Forging a more intimate relationship with your body and interoceptive awareness towards better sleep. Responding intelligently to our nap needs and the enormous return when we stop and listen to our bodies. The feeling of being wired and tired due to increasing our caffeine intake as a response to our tiredness. Rebranding the nap and rethinking the laziness that is often associated with slowing down. How you can increase alertness and concentration by up to three times more after a 10-to-20-minute nap. The return on investment of a short nap and, best of all, it's free! The groggy feeling of sleep inertia, what it means and what is an ideal nap time. What naps in the workplace might look like and how to make it work for you. In this episode of the Redefining Midlife podcast, we dive deep into a topic that is both fundamental and transformational. It's not just about listening, it's about taking action for your well-being. The importance of prioritising one's physical and mental well-being during the often chaotic and hectic midlife years is often understated. As we navigate the tumultuous seas of work, family responsibilities, and personal growth, it's easy to neglect our own health. My personal account serves as a gentle reminder of the significance of prioritising your health. Listen in as I passionately share and touch on areas such as: What being proactive about your health really means. My own personal experience and struggles with health issues, and how I overcame them through small, consistent habits. Practical advice, including setting realistic and achievable goals, finding creative ways to incorporate movement into everyday activities, making mindful food choices, prioritising quality sleep, and practising daily mindfulness exercises. The ripple effect of taking proactive measures towards one's health and how it can positively impact loved ones. Episode 88 of the Redefining Midlife podcast focuses on debunking the myth of a one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness, tailored especially for busy midlife women. In this solo episode, I touch on topics including: The ever-changing landscape of health needs, particularly during and after the menopause transition and the importance of adapting to evolving requirements. Real-life examples of my body and how past experiences, injuries, and health issues shape current health needs and wellness practices. The distinction between lifespan and healthspan. Ways I am embracing the mind-body connection with an approach to health and wellness that addresses both mental and emotional well-being. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to interview amazing everyday midlife women who are doing incredible things. My goal is to use this platform to amplify their voices and showcase their achievements, instead of constantly focusing on celebrity culture. Today, we have an inspiring guest, Angela Hucker, who will share her story with us. Angela is a rare gem in her field, with over 20 years of experience as an industry expert in the male-dominated world of construction. She has an impressive portfolio which includes projects in power, oil and gas, renewables, infrastructure, commercial, civil, and industrial sectors. She has even been featured on the U.S. TV show Megastructures. However, it is her firsthand experience as a FIFO (fly-in-fly-out) worker in remote areas of Australia that has ignited her mission to eradicate the challenges faced by women in the industry and advocate for much-needed change. Angela is the founder and CEO of EPIC (Empowering People in Construction), a dynamic venture that aims to reshape the Australian construction sector by tapping into the potential of women. She is a true force for change in our society and as you will hear in our conversation, she is incredibly humble yet determined and powerful. Tune in and enjoy our discussion which covers: Living life to the fullest, adapting to challenges, and embracing change. Large-scale projects with budgets reaching billions, like Dubai International Airport and Ferrari Resort. The less visible aspects of construction management, such as handling disputes and overseeing contractors. A confrontation that had Angela terrified and determined to make a change to the industry. The new laws that have recently been implemented and still require significant attention. The importance of addressing subconscious biases and educating others to create a cultural shift and change behaviours. Focusing on retention and addressing issues rather than just increasing the number of women in the construction industry. Angela's drive to transform the industry is infectious, motivating us all as we follow her lead. I would love you to follow Angela and her company EPIC. You can find details on her website https://epicservices.group/ and LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/angela-hucker/.
