My guest on this episode is the new North and South Men's Amateur Champion, Davis Ovard. This might be one of the more fascinating wins in amateur golf this year. Davis is a rising sophomore at Baylor, so naturally we spoke about his freshman season that included a run to the National Championship. We also spoke about his start in the game and how golf has become a "family affair" for the Ovards. But what makes his win so interesting is the opponent he faced in the championship match, Jackson Van Paris. Jackson is a Pinehurst native, as many of you know.....so it seemed that the storybook ending was already written well ahead of time.....except nobody bothered to tell Davis Ovard, which might explain how he came away with a 2&1 win to claim the Putter Boy trophy. Mike McGraw has spent his entire life as a teacher, mentor, and coach. Starting out in Edmond, OK as a high school teacher and golf coach at the age of 25, moving on to be the assistant at Oklahoma State for a number of years, spending 8 years as the head of the Cowboys, and now as the head at Baylor. Coach McGraw, as you'll learn in this episode, has as much passion for coaching as anyone I know. He has dedicated his life to making others better whether that is in the classroom, as a golfer, or most importantly as a person. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Mike and trust you all will enjoy hearing him as well. This is a good one to share with anyone younger in your life as Mike has a lot of wisdom for how young people should go about navigating their life. Hope you all enjoy this conversation. #43: National Champion coach and current Baylor men's golf coach, Mike McGraw, shares insight from his experiences, leadership, lessons in excellence, and much more. Mike grew up in Ponca City where he became an avid student of the game. His parents instilled in him at an early age to always do the right thing and work hard at whatever you do. With a strong work ethic and determination to succeed he was able to receive a college golf scholarship. At the end of his playing career he decided to get into coaching. Mike started off coaching high school and then jumped into college as an assistant at Oklahoma State University. He then took over as head coach, where in his first year as head coach won a National Championship. He talks about the excitement and pressures that go with being a head coach at one of the best golf programs in the country. After his time at OSU came to an end he accepted a position at Alabama. In his only year at Alabama he helped the crimson tide win a national championship against his former OSU team. Since then he accepted the head coaching position at Baylor and has helped guide the Bears to numerous successful seasons. Key takeaways:- Always do the right thing and work hard- Be intentional, work hard and work smart- Accountability is key- Be willing to confront issues and deal with them head on- Never stop learning- Keep an enthusiasm for what you do - What it takes to build a team and culture- Be grateful - Learn to forgive- The importance of routine and developing good habits- Qualities of great players- Be authentic- Leave things better than you found themEnjoy the show!

Today we are joined by Amy Bass, author of the book One Goal: A Coach, A Team, and the Game that Brought a Divided Town Together (Hachette Books, 2018). This is the fourth book for Bass, who is director of the honors program and a professor of history at the College of New Rochelle in New York. One Goal is the story of a high school soccer team in Lewiston, Maine, that helped bring together a racially divided city. Lewiston, overwhelmingly white, became the home base for thousands of Somali refugees. Longtime residents of Lewiston were uncomfortable with people whose language, religion and customs were markedly different. A popular saying in Maine was “You're always from away,” and yet Lewiston's citizens were having trouble adjusting to this latest group of immigrants from far away. Enter longtime Lewiston High School soccer coach Mike McGraw, who saw the potential in the young Somalis playing in pickup games in the city. Molding the group into a cohesive unit, McGraw and his squad weathered racial taunts from opponents and a less-than-ringing endorsement from Lewiston's mayor to bring an elusive soccer state championship to a traditionally hockey-mad area. Bass shows how trust, faith, hard work and some uncanny soccer ability helped bring glory and pride to a town that still struggles with coexistence between very different cultures. A popular saying in Maine was “You’re always from away,” and yet Lewiston’s citizens were having trouble adjusting to this latest group of immigrants from far away. Enter longtime Lewiston High School soccer coach Mike McGraw, who saw the potential in the young Somalis playing in pickup games in the city. Molding the group into a cohesive unit, McGraw and his squad weathered racial taunts from opponents and a less-than-ringing endorsement from Lewiston’s mayor to bring an elusive soccer state championship to a traditionally hockey-mad area. Bass shows how trust, faith, hard work and some uncanny soccer ability helped bring glory and pride to a town that still struggles with coexistence between very different cultures. Bob D’Angelo is working on his master’s degree in history at Southern New Hampshire University.
