Mack B. Rhoades, IV, who has provided outstanding leadership and vision for three NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision athletic programs, was named Baylor University's Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on July 13, 2016. Rhoades has organized a team of dynamic administrators and restructured the athletics department to maximize efficiencies across teams. His concept of Preparing Champions for Life has provided the ongoing vision for Baylor Athletics, which aims to bolster the student-athlete experience by focusing on the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth. Over his five years in Waco, Baylor has won 21 Big 12 titles and six national championships. For the second-consecutive full term (not including the COVID-shortened 2019-20 campaign), the Bears brought home multiple national championships. After acrobatics & tumbling won its fifth-straight title and women's basketball clinched their third national championship in 2019, A&T extended to six straight in 2020-21 and men's basketball claimed its first in program history. In June 2021, Rhoades was selected as Sports Business Journal's 2021 Athletics Director of the Year, marking the second Athletics Director of the Year honor earned by Rhoades in as many years. He was chosen as 2019-20 NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in March 2020. The 2020-21 academic year, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, brought success for Baylor Athletics as the department combined to bring 20 trophies home to Waco. Men's basketball won its first Big 12 regular-season title and clinched its first conference title since 1950 en route to winning every NCAA tournament game by an average of 15.3 points to claim its first-ever national championship. Baylor volleyball's Lauren Briseño, Allie Sczech and associate head coach Joshua Walker earned gold with USA Volleyball's U21 Team in the 2023 NORCECA Pan American Cup, taking the title match against Mexico. The gold medal match went USA's way with a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-16, 25-21). The U.S. Women swept their way through the tournament going 5-0 and not dropping a single set to an opponent. Briseño was named Best Receiver of the Tournament at the end of play, five other U.S. women earning accolades as well. In the gold medal match, Briseño was credited with 10 digs and nine excellent receptions. For the entirety of the Cup, Briseño was credited with 57 digs and 34 excellent receptions. Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen is entering his third season with the Bears. After being hired as an assistant coach on May 14, 2020, he was promoted to associate head coach August 1, 2022. Bjerch-Andresen replaced Ryan Blagg, who took over as the head coach at Louisville after eight years as Baylor's assistant, following the 2019-2020 season. Bjerch-Andresen joined the Bears after spending three seasons as an assistant coach for Texas Tech men's golf, including his last two years as associate head coach. Krista Smith joined Baylor Athletics in July of 2022 as the Director for Character Formation with the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence. Smith previously worked as the Student-Athlete Development Coordinator and Academic Counselor from April 2021 to July 2022 at the University of Arkansas. Prior to that role, she served the Razorbacks as the Student-Athlete Development Assistant from February 2019 to April 2021. The San Antonio, Texas, native attended Arkansas, earning her bachelor's in recreation and sport management in 2018. She earned her master's in sports administration from St. Thomas University in 2019. The former Krista Kolbinskie is married to Dionte Smith. Brent Ingram is in his first year in 2022-23 as the assistant athletics director of communication at Baylor. Ingram joined the Baylor staff in Aug. of 2022 after spending four years at UTSA as the associate director of communications. He is tasked with the overall leadership of the communications office and as the primary contact for Baylor football. He joined the UTSA staff after spending two years at UT Arlington and the previous 12 years working at the University of Kentucky. He has worked with a diverse group of sports during his career, including baseball, men's basketball, football, men's and women's tennis, track & field and cross country, men's and women's soccer, rifle and volleyball. He was the president of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2022 and serves on the CoSIDA Stabley Writing Contest and Publications Contest committees. Kristen Hankins is in her fifth year as the Director of Spirit & Traditions at Baylor University, she is the head coach for the Songleaders dance team, and Bruiser & Marigold mascot teams. Holly McKenzie joined Baylor Athletics in July of 2022 as the Senior Coordinator for Sports Ministry. In her role, McKenzie assists and provides leadership to ministry occurring on the women's student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff by providing pastoral care, evangelism, discipleship, and other spiritually formative programming to student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Previously, McKenzie served as an Athletes in Action Local Team Leader/Campus Director at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Whitewater from 2015-2022. She led Bible studies, provided evangelism and discipleship to female student-athletes at UW, as well as led and trained a team of staff who served in various sports ministry roles at UW and other campuses. Glenn Moore is in his 23rd season as head coach at Baylor and his 26th full season as a collegiate softball head coach. Moore, who was selected to guide the Bears' program in June 2000, begins the 2023 season with a career record of 977-467, including an 838-425 record at Baylor. His teams have had a winning record in all but one season of his Division I coaching career and he is Baylor Athletics' active all-time wins leader across all sports. He has progressed up the active NCAA coaching ranks, now ranking No. 24 in total victories among active Division I head coaches. During Moore's tenure, the Bears have received 18 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, 16 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Honors and 70 NFCA All-Region honors. In addition, Baylor players have earned 93 all-conference selections during his tenure, while numerous Bears have earned academic all-conference honors. In 2022, Moore led the Bears to 32-win season and a postseason National Invitational Softball Championship. With the young squad, Baylor handed then No. 14 Texas their worst loss in program history, defeating the Longhorns 17-3 in Austin. In 2021, Moore reached 800 wins at Baylor as he led the Bears back to the postseason at the Gainesville Regional. In a shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Moore reached the 900-win milestone when the Bears topped Grand Canyon, 10-2 (5), in Waco. Erin Bean joined Baylor Athletics in January 2021 to serve as the Assistant AD for Marketing Strategy. In September 2021 she was promoted to Associate AD for Strategic Marketing & Fan Engagement. She oversees the areas of strategic marketing, fan, and community engagement, social media & digital engagement, and the Baylor Spirit & Traditions program. Bean is the sports program administrator for Baylor Equestrian. A former Division III volleyball student-athlete at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., Bean brings 10 years of experience, savvy, and passion for collegiate athletics, including experience in all three NCAA Divisions. She's had stints at Saint Leo University, University of South Florida, Tennessee Technological University, and the Northeast Conference, and started her career at her alma mater, Juniata College. Prior to joining the Baylor family, Bean served as the Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations at Saint Leo (DII). She oversaw external components of athletic communications, marketing, special events, community engagement, game environment, ticket operations, concessions, merchandise sales, corporate partnerships, and Lions Athletic Fund. She also provided leadership to the areas of communication, alumni relations, fan engagement, development, and special events. Stacey Smith is in her 21st season as a coach at Baylor working with the Bears' jumpers and her first season as the associate head coach of the program. The most decorated women's athlete in program history, the former Stacey Bowers currently holds the Baylor outdoor and indoor record in the triple jump while claiming the only individual national title in women's program history when she won the 1999 NCAA outdoor triple jump title. Smith was promoted from assistant coach to associate women's track head coach during the summer of 2017, and then from associate women's coach to associate head coach in the summer of 2022. In almost two decades of coaching at her alma mater, Smith has been able to translate her personal collegiate success into success for the student-athletes she has mentored. She coached Felix Obi as he became Baylor's first national champion in the triple jump in the 2014 indoor season. Britni Sneed Newman is in her 20th season as Baylor's pitching coach. She joined the Baylor staff in 2004 after spending one season as a student assistant at LSU. Newman has developed some of the most prolific pitchers in Baylor history, several of which have been among the nation's best. Zach Dillon was announced as Baylor's hitting coach and recruiting coordinator on June 25, 2022. A former Baylor baseball player from 2003-06 and volunteer assistant coach in the 2012 season, Dillon returns to Waco after spending the last six years as the director of operations for Twelve Baseball, a premier select youth and high school program based out of Katy, Texas. Since the 2016-17 calendar year, Dillon's work with Twelve Baseball has been influential, particularly in the 2018-2025 recruiting classes. On a daily basis, he assisted in youth and high school practice planning, ensuring a competitive culture and environment that maximized player development. Off the field, he created the club's annual operating budget, handled program development and fundraising, managed scheduling and other organizational administrative duties. Two-time Baylor All-American and 2005 NCAA Champion Sophia Young-Malcolm joined Baylor's staff as Assistant AD for Player Development in May of 2021. Young-Malcolm played on Baylor's first NCAA Championship team in 2005, was a two-time All-American and one of seven players in BU history to amass both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. As Assistant AD for Player Development, Young will serve the student-athletes in the women's basketball program as the liaison between the Baylor Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE). The SACE department serves student-athletes in two major areas: academic services and character formation. Young will also spearhead the program's community service efforts and assist in recruiting. Young's four-year playing career at Baylor spanned from 2002-06. Through the 2020-21 season, Young still ranks fourth all-time in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage, second in rebounds (first in NCAA era), and second in double-doubles. At the time of her selection, Young was Baylor's highest-ever draft pick in the WNBA when she was the fourth overall selection of the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2006. The Silver Stars got a solid return on their investment with Young playing 301 career games over nine seasons, including three WNBA All-Star selections. She tallied 4,300 career points and 1,807 rebounds in a career that spanned from 2006-2015 and resulted in a selection to the San Antonio Stars' All-Decade Team. Young also played overseas in the Euroleague and Eurocup. After leaving professional basketball, Young continued leading her AAU basketball program called Sophia Young Elite in San Antonio. Her programs produced student-athletes that went to Division I schools that included UTEP, Oklahoma State, Abilene Christian and Indiana, among others. She also coached for two seasons as head coach at the Cornerstone Christian School in San Antonio, collecting a winning record in each of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Since that time, she has served the San Antonio community as a realtor. Young was born in Saint Vincent, West Indies, and she played her high school basketball in Shreveport, La. at Evangel Christian Academy. In 2021, Rogers took on a newly created role providing sport administration leadership for Baylor's 19 sport programs. Rogers is responsible for all facets of sports administration in collaboration with each program's Head Coach and primary Sport Administrator. She serves as the Sport Program Administrator for Men's Basketball and Track & Field. She also provides oversight to the student-athlete success areas that includes academic services and student-athlete development. Prior to 2021, Rogers provided oversight of the student-athlete health and wellness area that includes sports medicine, physical therapy/rehabilitation, nutrition, mental health services, athletic performance and applied performance. Rogers also formerly oversaw strategic planning and initiatives, Title IX, Inclusivity, Gender Equity and Diversity. David Kaye is in his 14th year in Baylor Athletics and his first year as Associate AD for External Affairs Operations. He is also in his fourth year on the Baylor Athletics Leadership Team, serving as men's golf sports program administrator, and his seventh year representing athletics communications on the external leadership team. Kaye was promoted to his current role in August 2022, where he is responsible for closing the gap between strategic objectives and purposeful execution by managing special projects and campaigns, liaising with stakeholders and assisting in cultivating external leadership consensus. John Morris and Katie Smith talk to Colonel Walter Sparky Matthews, MD who is a Clinical Professor in the Honors Program, and an Honors Program Pre-Medical Mentor. Dr. Walter “Sparky” Matthews joined the Honors Program faculty in 2020 after retiring from the U.S. Air Force as the 1st Surgeon General of the United States Space Force. He earned a B.A. in Biology/Pre-Healthcare from Baylor University, a M.P.H. from the University of Texas Health Science Center, and a M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College. Dr. Matthews earned his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, and is board-certified in both Aerospace Medicine and Public Health & General Preventive Medicine. He teaches courses on the history of medicine, pathophysiology, and freshman seminars on leadership as a physician. Dr. Matthews is a highly decorated Air Force officer, retiring with the rank of Colonel. During his career, he achieved 1,113 flight hours in 26 weapon systems, including 197 combat hours and 42 combat support hours. In March of 2022, Cori Bolts was promoted to lead the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) as the Senior Associate AD for Student-Athlete Success. In her new role, Bolts leads SACE and continues as sport program administrator for the Baylor Softball program. SACE is responsible for the academic welfare and support of Baylor University's student-athletes in all 19 varsity sports. The department consists of two major areas, Academic Services and Character Formation. Bolts previously served as Associate AD for Character Formation, where she was charged with leading a three-member team focused on developing and enhancing Character Formation programming. Bolts joined Baylor after spending a year and half as the Director of Leadership and Education for Women Leaders in College Sports. During her time at Women Leaders in College Sports, Bolts planned, managed and executed all educational programming content and professional development programming for the association. Bolts was instrumental in revamping the Rising Stars program, organizing the 2017 Women Leaders National Convention programming and supporting the Women of Color Initiative. Prior to joining Women Leaders, Bolts served as the Director of Student-Athlete Development from 2013-2017 at K-State Athletics and she got her start as Assistant Director of Student Services at the University of Central Florida. Bolts is a graduate of the University of Georgia where she earned bachelor's degrees in Marketing and Sport Business Management. She also received her master's degrees in Business Administration and Sport Business Management from the University of Central Florida. Joshua Walker joined Ryan McGuyre's staff in the spring of 2022, officially being named assistant coach on March 10. "We are thrilled to add Joshua Walker to our staff," said McGuyre. "He is an elite-level coach and already a proven national champion. He has competed at the highest level and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff. He is very sharp tactically and will provide both offensive and defensive instruction. He has a passionate love for the Lord and understands servant leadership. His transition from the men's game will sync well with what we are already doing, as well as providing fresh perspectives and innovation to help us continue to improve. He has a beautiful family and we are excited about all of them joining the Baylor family." Walker, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., comes to Waco after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii-Manoa with the men's volleyball team, his alma mater. John Morris talks with John Maurer who is the Associate Chaplain Director of Sports Ministry at Baylor University. In the spring of 2018 Baylor hired John as an Associate Chaplain/Director of Sports Ministry. His role is to serve as a chaplain to Baylor Athletics; specifically offering pastoral leadership, teaching, evangelism and care to student-athletes, coaches, staff and their families. John has over 30 years of experience in sports ministry at Division 1 collegiate, professional and international levels which uniquely qualifies him for his role here at Baylor University. Not only has John done the work of evangelism and discipleship in the athletic world, but he has a proven history of training other staff, athletes and coaches to do so as well. He has shepherded and led teams of staff and student athletes by building an authentic communities of Christ-followers that impact their teams, campuses, and communities for Christ. His is passionate about cross-cultural relationships that allow him to connect with many and share God's heart for all nations. John graduated from the University of Dayton in 1987 and joined the staff of Athletes in Action the following summer where he, his wife and three children faithfully served until he came to Waco. John Morris and Brooke Bednarz. talk with Dr. Monique Marsh-Bell, the Associate AD for Mental Health Services at Baylor University. Monique Marsh-Bell joined Baylor Athletics in March 2018. She serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Mental Health Services. Before joining the athletic department Marsh-Bell spent the previous six years at the Baylor University Counseling Center, where she served as Senior Psychologist and Assistant Director of Community and Diversity Programming. Marsh-Bell has focused her clinical and outreach work on the prevention, education, and treatment of mental health issues with vulnerable populations, people who underutilize mental health services, and with those that stigma continues to be a barrier to mental health. In her current role, Marsh-Bell provides mental health resources to student-athletes in the form of individual therapy, mental health education, crisis intervention, and referral services. She also provides mental health education to athletic department coaches and staff. Marsh-Bell earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Southern University and A&M College. She earned a Master of Science and Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University. Marsh-Bell is originally from Garland, Texas. She and her husband, Brandon, have one son, Braylon.
