As I was preparing this, I could see us standing, looking at a vast mountain range. The Lord reached down, His hand reached down, and as His hand descended, the mountain was put into perspective. That mountain was tiny when compared to the Hand of the Lord. A word from the Lord shared at a Women in Ministry Network gathering in September 2020 He says shift your vision. We need to see the mountain through a different lens to see the size's reality from His perspective.

I met Bernie Ritterbush around 2005 at a National Coalition of Ministries to Men conference in Washington D.C., and as he reminds me, it was before the official launch of Noble Warriors. In this episode, we discuss the difference between discipleship and disciple-making with Bernie, who has been an intentional disciple-maker for almost 50 years. He's worked with Christian Business Men's Committee (now Connection), founded the Men's Ministry Network in 1996, and he's the creator of (re)THINK Disciplemaking: Seeing God's Map for Becoming and Making Mature Disciples.  “The one thing that will end is our disciple-making – life on life. When we are gone, our life can't be part of that picture anymore. The main purpose God has us on the planet is to reproduce.” Disciple-making is the intentional process that produces a disciple. Over time, Bernie learned to reverse-engineer the discipleship process and emphasize the core competencies of what it means to walk with Jesus in obedience and humility and implement His Truth in our lives.  We want to be Jesus-followers, not just scholars.   Don't be afraid of making a mistake; He will redeem that. Judas betrayed Jesus. Men may not turn out the way that you want, but be obedient to what the Lord wants you to do in terms of investing in other men. He grows and gives the increase.  Resources:  (re)THINK Disciplemaking by Bernie Ritterbush  Every Man a Warrior Navigator Series  Find 5 Bibles we recommend and other resources from The Noble Man is a Man of the Word [Podcast Ep. 11].  View Show Notes: NobleWarriors.org/Episode31 Leave a Review: If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to leave us a review. In Episode 020 of the United Methodist People Podcast Rev. Dr. Brad Miller has a conversation with Jan Lawrence the Executive Director of the Reconciling Ministry Network.   The Reconciling Ministry Network is comprised of over 40,000 Reconciling United Methodists and over 1,000 Reconciling Churches and Communities. Dozens of statements, open letters, and bold refutations of GC2019’s shameful decisions have emerged from the people, communities, and churches of the Reconciling movement across the connection. Since GC2019, these people who call themselves Reconciling have borne witness for justice in media outlets, performed same-gender weddings, organized gatherings, and continued in faithful ministry as called by their Creator. We are not only working on what is to come, but we are already living it. Justice movements within our Church can no longer seek justice by compromise. To do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God require us to rise and resist.    The United Methodist People Podcast with Rev. Episode 35: Talking about Absalom Jones and the Union of Black Episcopalians with the Hon. Steven Mullins

Today our guest is the Honorable Steven Mullins, President of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of UBE (Union of Black Episcopalians) and Commissioner of Planning & Zoning and a Justice of the Peace in the city of West Haven. The Union of Black Episcopaliansis a successor organization continuing a tradition "of more than 200 years of Black leadership in The Episcopal Church." Locally, there is a chapter in Hartford and the Southern Connecticut Chapter which was formed in 2013, following the merger of the New Haven and Bridgeport Chapters. Steven is the chapter's first president following this merger. The focus of the Union of Black Episcopalians is to serve as an organization of predominately Black clergy and laity that advocates for Black Episcopalians and commemorates the lives and ministries of Black saints in the Episcopal Church.   Steven was born in Glenwood, Alabama and came to Connecticut at the age of 5. Steve is an active member of the Holy Spirit, West Haven. He is married to Jean and they have two extraordinary children, both actors Nora and Christian.    We begin our conversation learning about Steven’s history with the Union of Black Episcopalians, beginning in 1966. His introduction to UBE was at a celebration at Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford celebrating the feast day of Absalom Jones, which the church remembers on February 13, the first Black ordained Episcopal priest. Steven says the hallmark of his participation with UBE thus far has been the 2013 burial of Mr. Fortune, an enslaved man in Waterbury who died in 1798 and whose body was used for scientific research without the family’s nor Mr. Fortune's consent for years after his death. Steven, and the UBE Southern Connecticut chapter, helped arrange a wake at the Connecticut capitol and the burial at the Riverside Cemetery in Waterbury.    Steven shares that although The Episcopal Church does have a Black presiding bishop, and the Episcopal Church in Connecticut has had a Black bishop diocesan, there is still more work to be done. He says it is the goal of UBE to make the black Episcopal presence known in the church and to encourage more Black leadership — particularly lay leadership.    The Southern Connecticut chapter of UBE hosts a number of events, including their annual Martin Luther King Jr. memorial service and their Celebration of the feast day of Absalom Jones, which will be held at 3:00 p.m. on February 24, 2019 at Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford. Steven provides us with a “Cliff's note” biography of Absalom Jones, a full biography is available here.    Karin asks what Steven’s goals or dreams are for the future of UBE, to which he responds to make sure people of color are in leadership roles in the Episcopal Church. If you are interested in joining the Southern Connecticut chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, or learn more about what they are up to, Steven encourages you to email him at smullinsjpwh@aol.com or see their Ministry Network page.

Today our guests are from New Haven’s refugee agency, IRIS, which stands for Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services. The agency was founded many years ago by Episcopal churches, and now works with our federal government to resettle refugees in the State, with the help of faith communities and other groups and individuals. World Refugee Day is June 20and IRIS is sponsoring a festival on June 23, from 2-6 p.m., at Trinity on the Green in New Haven, with world cuisine tasting, world music, and more.(Ticketedevent! Get one at http://www.irisct.org)    Back in March, we went to an event sponsored by the Episcopal Church in Connecticut’s Women’s Ministry Network, held at Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford, which was followed by joining a public witness against gun violence at the Capitol. The morning program was about celebrating the gifts of women and hearing about challenges, and it asked everyone who attended to think about how we’re called to participate in the work of equipping and empowering women. Two of the speakers were from IRIS, one a young refugee woman, who shared her experience in playing soccer. She found it empowering.  We’re going to learn more about that today.   With us are Ashley Makar, Leslie Koons, and Gladys Mwilelo.   Ashley is the Outreach Coordinator for IRIS, and Leslie is their Health Promoter. Leslieand Ashley and colleaguesstarted the women’s soccer club. Gladys is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but spent most of her life in Burundi. Some of you may have seen Gladys if you’ve been through New Haven recently, as her face is one of the GIANT images on the Green in New Haven, installed as part of the“WEARE: A Nation of Immigrants”photo installation this summer. She was also a speaker at the opening event for the photo installation.   But today we talked about soccer! There seems to be some agreement, at least by Leslie and Gladys, that soccer is life.    We start out by asking questions about the women’s soccer club, started in 2015. She talked about how it got started, how it works, who can participate, and the like. We learned that Gladys’ mother, who was NOT a soccer player, now loves it and won’t miss a session if at all possible! That inspired Gladys, who is currently a student at Central Connecticut State University, and was already a skilled soccer player, to join it as well.   Gladys told us the amazing story of when she used to play soccer in Burundi, dressed as a boy. And when she got a little older, and the boys and others realized it …  To this day she hadn’t told her parents. This podcast will be the“bigreveal.”   Ashley helped us see the soccer club as part of the many wellness programs by IRIS for its clients, all of which help build community. IRIS’s core services include all of the work of welcoming and resettling refugees, and provide additional support services. It’s not just“serviceprovision,” she said, it’s a community where people empower one another.    We dipped into a few other questions about clothing and creating a safe space, and ended with more about the World Refugee Day Festival sponsored by IRIS on June 23 in New Haven.

Circumstances around the globe continue to draw stark parallels to the events leading up to the end times as recorded in the book of Revelation and other prophetic books in Scripture. We might be wise, as parents, to at least begin to understand our times and better prepare ourselves—and our kids— for what to do should we actually be living in the end times. Our guest, Carl Gallups, is a pastor, author, and commentator. He has served in Milton, Florida as the senior pastor at Hickory Hammock Baptist Church for 30 years. He has authored multiple bestselling books, and his latest book, When The Lion Roars, was released in 2016. Gallups founded the web-based PNN News and Ministry Network, and he can be heard on the radio several times a week. His commentary can often be found on WND.com, as well as on various television and radio shows. Carl Gallups has appeared as a guest on Fox News Radio, TBN with Pat Boone, and Jewish Voice TV, and he was featured as an “influential Evangelical leader" on Fox Business Report. Are Parents Doing Enough to Understand Our Times You know, it's not every day that we think about living our last day, but it is something we need to take a glance at occasionally—maybe even regularly—especially when we consider everything that's been taking place in the world lately. This is even more true for those of us who still have kids at home. Because if we're responsible before God for protecting our kids and preparing them for their future—and I think eternity might qualify as their “future”—then I'd also think that we would be held responsible to help them recognize and prepare for the return of Christ. I have to confess that I have not been the best at helping my kids in this area. Eschatology is just a subject that I find confusing and speculative. I guess my philosophy has been that if I just stay ready, I've got nothing to be concerned about. I know that is no excuse, but maybe because it's my weakest area of biblical knowledge, I just don't have the confidence to intelligently and/or adequately pass it along to my kids like I probably should. This much I DO know. This much I DO pass on to my kids. We are close to the end times! And I know Christians have been saying that forever, but a lot has developed just in the past few decades that should move all of us into having some very serious conversations with our kids about the imminent return of Jesus Christ. And that's exactly what I'd like to draw out of our conversation today as Carl Gallups and I discuss the following topics: Who is Carl Gallups? What the Sons of Issachar, eschatology, and the return of Christ have in common. Carl relates today's events and state of the world to the prophecy of the End Times. How the Bible clearly identifies the End Times. The purpose and use of technology in the destiny of humankind. Importance of living your life, understand our times, and teach our kids to be ready for eternity. Why pay attention to biblical prophecy and teach your kids about it. Picture provided by: bykst
