Of all the U.S. National Teams competing in the Tokyo Summer Olympics, perhaps none feel more urgency than the Women's Softball team. After losing the gold medal game to Japan in the 2008 Games, its sport was removed from the next two Olympiads in London and Rio. When the first game in Tokyo takes place on July 21, it will mark 4,717 days between Olympic softball games. Softball is back — but not to stay. The sport will not be part of the Paris games in 2024. It will likely be included as part of the Los Angeles games in 2028, but how many of these players can afford to wait seven more years? Most won't, especially the few veterans in their 30s who have stuck it out to make it to these games. This is their shot at gold. And of all the U.S. National Teams competing in Tokyo, none provide a bigger rooting interest for Northern California fans. One third of the team's 15-player roster features graduates from Northern California high schools. That includes two members of the team's veteran core we mentioned earlier: Monica Abbott, a 2003 grad of North Salinas High, and Valerie Arioto a 2007 grad of Foothill High in Pleasanton. There's also 2011 Pleasant Grove High grad Ally Carda of Elk Grove, 2013 Casa Roble High grad Ali Aguilar of Orangevale and 2016 Merced High grad Bubba Nickles. We caught up with former coaches of both Arioto and Nickles and asked them to share memories and stories of the two softball stars. Which player would hold her own personal practice for more than an hour after the team's ended? Which one snapped at her coach after being pinch run for? Time to find out. STORYTELLERS: Matt Sweeney, Foothill-Pleasanton Softball Coach (2006-Present) Scott Kabrich, Foothill-Pleasanton Softball Coach (1990-2005) Bart McAfee, Merced Softball Coach (2003-2016)

A discussion with an Olympic Athlete about the delay, staying prepared, advice to young softball players, and about the radioactivity in Japan ahead of the games. We need to take care of the world first: the Olympics is the world’s game”. -Monica Abbott Softball, after a 12 year hiatus, is again recognized as an olympic sport... but we have to wait one more year to watch Team USA pitcher Monica Abbott and company potentially win gold in Japan. Abbott and fellow pitcher Kat Osterman are the only two players to bridge the gap between the 2008 silver medal winning team and on the upcoming olympic team. Abbott and I talk about: The emotions when USA Softball was informed of the Olympic delay on a team phone call “Life put on hold another year”: A world-class female athlete's perspective on sacrifices “We had a big talk about that”: Thoughts on the possibility of playing in front of not one, single fan Amidst the pandemic, additional significance in wearing "USA" in these upcoming Olympic Games As players, we always replay the plays that we could have changed. What is one play from the 2008 loss in the Gold Medal game that Abbott would change the outcome of? An Olympic delay: staying motivated physically and mentally Pushing the naysaying thoughts from out of your mind A unique perspective on the impact of COVID-19 on those athletes that have lost a season of ball How could the players work to overcome the “lost time” from COVID-19 AT HOME WORK FOR PLAYERS OF ALL AGES: Abbott's conditioning and skill work (with minimal equipment) recommendations How to refocus after a stray thought pops into your mind while playing- examples she’s experienced 2021 OLYMPICS Leveraging experience of playing professionally in Japan to benefit 2021 Team USA softball Has the US Olympic committee debriefed the athletes about the radioactivity in Fukushima? Is Abbott worried? MY FORMER PLAYER'S QUESTIONS: Anna from NJ: What are your thoughts on the mound during an Olympic game? Jenna from NJ: What is your favorite pitch? Why is it so effective? Favorite part about being a pitcher? LISTENER QUESTIONS: John from Long Island Josh from Connecticut Mike from New Jersey For more information about the Abbott Academy, visit: www.monicaabbott.com
Monica talks about the early days of softball that did not go as you might think it might have. How she obtained her first pitching lesson and the challenges as a youth player. We talk about how it was at North Salinas HS and the mindset going into her junior year and why Monica felt she had to produce. What it meant to her being part of a 18U team that went to the Canada Cup, the different styles of play from teams that were there from other countries, her summer experience and the food she fell in love with from Canada. Monica reflects on the accomplishment of getting 500 strikeouts. She was the first pitcher to record this feat in all 4 years! She did it in her 33rd game. What it was like being in the zone when she recorded 22 strikeouts vs Florida which is the highest singe game record. Her fondest team achievement at U of Tennessee, being part of the United States National Team and playing for the USA at the Olympics. Monica talks about the first time she went into the game at the Olympics and the feelings that came with it. The process of becoming a professional in Japan and the decision that she almost did not make. She talks about how hard it was being traded away from the USSSA Pride to the Tennessee Diamonds and how signing the $1 million contract hopefully opens more doors for others. We touch on the Monica Abbott Foundation and then go into detail on losing softball in the Olympics and why it is so important to have it as well as being the veteran on the team now. Has she thought about how much longer she will play? We end with her pet peeve that is worth the listen!Since the recording of this interview Monica and her teammates walked away from their former team due to an insensitive tweet and formed their own team called- THIS IS US!
