A good weekend at the Trop? In this economy???When Nick and I recorded Episode 116 back on Thursday, we figured that we'd better add a second episode to our schedule this week, expecting that the Jays by here on Monday night would be about to embark a fight for their playoff lives.Instead, they've come through a second straight weekend in which just about every result they needed went their way. The Mariners lost three times to the Rangers, the Astros lost three to the Royals, and the Jays themselves took two of three in Tampa.Things are good enough at the moment that in Episode 117 we actually allowed ourselves to indulge in discussing some playoff possibilities, like whether we would try to setup to face the Twins instead of the Rays, whether John Schneider is the right manager for the job, what to do with a slumping Davis Schneider, and moreHave a listen! You can find us in all the usual places, such as Apple Podcasts……as well as Spotify, and wherever else you get your podcasts (unless it's Google still, though I remain hopeful that I'll eventually get through to someone who can help and the feed will actually get fixed at some point).THE BATFLIP is a reader-supported publication. On today's show, we discuss what the steps are to building and retaining a solid team. Mark Oristano has led a life a lot of sports fans would envy spending 30 years in the NFL broadcasting games for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers. Plus a good portion of that time was spent working several jobs in the front office of one of America's most famous and successful teams, the original Dallas Cowboys.  Mark worked under legendary Cowboy president and GM Tex Schramm learning his management style - a style that kept employees engaged and working for the team for decades. Tex also created a front office system that was the envy of the pro sports world.  Key Takeaways: What was the measure of success for your team?Success on the field was winning the Super Bowl. Success off the field was helping the team win the Super Bowl.During the season, everything was run by checklists and procedures set in place. During the off season, all of the checklists and procedures were re-evaluated to see if they should change or improve based on how the season went. How do we keep great people?Hire the best people you can find. They will cost you more up front, but it's worth it.Train them your way. Explain why you do things the way you do them to gain adoption.Let them do their jobs. Don't micro-manage.Implement the Golden Rule - treat your employees the way you want to be treated. How do you find the right talent that is a good fit for your organization? You want people who:Understand the basicsAre eager to learn moreHave a desire to be a part of the team How do you set up a new hire for success?Give employees permission to not know the answer, but be able to find it and bring it to you.Convey to employees that they all have a role to play. If they take care of the little things, the project will work. Everyone's contribution matters. 3 Top Takeaways:Decrease turnover. It costs 1/3 of the departing employee's salary to replace them.Be certain that you are receptive to your employees' ideas, problems, and thoughts. It's not about you. It's about the team. Connect with Mark Oristano:Website: https://www.leadwithprinciple.com/Mark's course: https://www.leadwithprinciple.com/courses/lead-with-principle

In 2008, Michelle Obama started a government program called “Let's Move!” that sought to reduce childhood obesity. You might remember the First Lady teaming up with everyone from Beyonce to Big Bird to promote exercise and better eating habits. Unfortunately, the program was largely a failure. And the obesity statistics continued to rise. 74% of Americans today are either obese or overweight. And yet, we're no longer talking about it. The national conversation around health and weight has turned away from things like good nutrition, weight loss and the importance of physical fitness, and instead adopted phrases like “fat acceptance” and “healthy at any size.” In some circles, there's even blanket denial that there is anything unhealthy at all about being obese.  Shaming people for being overweight is unequivocally wrong. But in our attempt to not offend, we've lost sight of the very real fact that there's a problem. Americans are heavier than ever, sicker than ever, dying earlier than ever, and... it's all preventable. So today, a conversation with Dr. Casey Means, a Stanford trained physician who left the traditional medical system behind to solve the one problem that she says is going to ruin us all: bad food. Episode 3: Racial Inequality and the Call for Social Justice.Recent events have brought to light the lingering effects of systemic racism and racial inequality in this nation. Racial inequality is pervasive and has unfairly hindered people of color from being able to equally access the opportunities and privileges available in this country.  This episode is a direct reflection of the sadness and guilt that I recently experienced once the full impact of this situation came to my immediate attention. As a society we must do better. Taking time to pause and reflect is important. But we must also challenge our preconceived notions, our assumptions, and our ideas about racism. We must also critically think about what it means to be a racist and what it means to be an anti-racist.The road to social justice for all starts by actively listening, being willing to be uncomfortable to allow for growth and education.  I fully recognize that it's not my place to teach how to course correct. I'm by no means qualified on how to do that. But, I can encourage you to do the work to actively listen, support work by anti-racist educators and start the conversation with your children. WHAT IS SOCIAL JUSTICE?Social Justice is a concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society as measured by the distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges within a society. In this episode:Learn why now is the time to actively listen to the voices of the Black Community and learn from their experiences.Learn why it is dismissive to counter Black Lives Matter with All Lives Matter statements. I offer you a framework of questions that you can ask yourself anytime you get triggered by ideas or comments that upset or make you feel defensive. I explain my thoughts on why violence undermines the call for social justice.Learn why thinking like a scientist can help you to make sense of conflicting messages.HOW CAN I DO THE WORK?This list is by no means exhaustive:Support anti-racist educators by purchasing their products, courses, books and other education materials. You can also spread their message by helping them to gain exposure through social media outlets.  Support a social justice cause you care about.Start the conversation with you children. Look for resources created by anti-racist educators or businesses committed to bringing forth racial equality.Expand your social circle or social media accounts to include individuals/ businesses who can help educate you on social justice and racial equality.Use your platform or position of power to help amplify the voices of people of color. For more information on the framework of questions mentioned above as well as links to resources related to this podcast, please check out this episode's show notes.Take me to the Show Notes!------------------------------------WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 5 DAYS TO MORE ENERGY CHALLENGE?Think feeling tired and cranky is part of the whole working mom package? Show notes: In the episode, Ciannon and I discussed how she got an agent, her submission story in both the UK and the US and the way she dealt with the stress of submissionWe go in-depth into what happens on submission and how everyone has a varied timeline. Some people it takes days, weeks or months and in some cases a year or moreHave low expectations to avoid disappointment over variables and outcomes you can not control “Submission is like a wild dance” - Ciannon SmartCiannon suggests keeping yourself busy during submission to stay sane “With submission…you arm yourself with all the knowledge you can” - Ciannon Smart We discuss different submission styles, some writers ask to only hear about the good news their agent receives from publishers, some ask for the constructive criticism and others want to hear everything. Ciannon and I had very different submission styles. “Expect nothing” - Ciannon SmartCiannon suggests that writers get a non-writing hobby She also debunks the common advice that writers should always work on something new while awaiting news. This is not something everyone is emotionally capable of. Don't force yourself to write something new while on submission if you have no energy to. We gushed a lot about our agents and our publishersCiannon's Twitter: @CiannonSCiannon's IG: @AuthorCiannonSmart Ciannon's Website: www.ciannonsmart.comThanks for listening!
