Marianne Hogan may be a relatively new name for many in the running and trail ultra community but she has been on an absolute streak this year, with podium finishes at both Western States where she placed 3rd female (in her first 100 mile race) and Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, where she just ran the race of her life crossing the line as the second female despite experiencing a significant injury in her hip mid race. She is only the 3rd woman in history to podium finish at both races in the same year. The previous two were Nikki Kimball in 2007 and Krissy Moehl in 2009. Marianne is 32 years old and currently calls Montreal home.Born and raised in a small town in Quebec, Marianne grew up with a passion to swim, bike and run – and race triathlons. She has had a colourful athletic career as a triathlete and after participating in three World Championships on Triathlon Canada's Junior National Team, she joined Triathlon Canada's Para program in 2019 to guide Jessica Tuomela. The pair enjoyed great success, culminating in participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Marianne started trail running in 2015 in Boulder, CO in college, and after her commitment to Jessica was fulfilled, as a member of the Salomon team she launched back into trail and ultrarunning and has been burning up the circuit ever since. In this episode we talk about Marianne's challenges with injuries, the things she has experienced and learned as a triathlon guide for someone with vision loss, her Western States and of course her UTMB experiences. Debbie Livingston has been running ultras for over 20 years. Her first 50 miler was the Vermont 50 in 1999, where she met her future husband after exchanging email addresses at the finish. Livingston was 4th, in her first 50 mile race. Oh, and Nikki Kimball won that race, also her first 50. Over 124 races later, Livingston is still at it now participating in the Connecticut FKT 600 Mile Challenge. After her initial success at ultras, there were a lot fewer races to choose from, so she made the move to head out west more often. Having that knowledge, she believes our east coast trails are just much harder. She fell in love with the gnarly trails and beauty at her home in the east, and quickly made a name for herself at the nation's toughest trails. Debbie went to college studying physical fitness and playing soccer. She drove into trails after college and 25 years later, her passion remains strong. Debbie race directs, coaches older athletes and youth cross country, teaches yoga and has a certification in culinary arts. She is a natural leader and her communication style empowers her to relate to the various types of students she instructs. For her, coaching and running isn't just about running, it's also teaching life lessons. Doing hard work. Being uncomfortable. Believing in yourself. In this episode, Debbie shares tales from the trail before the ultrarunning boom. She shares coaching secrets and how she got into teaching yoga. She talks about her plant based diet and why it was important to her to learn to nourish her body for performance and health. Debbie is a wealth of knowledge and a prime example of longevity in ultra running. Connect with Debbie here: Website IG: @trailrunningmom UltraSignUp

Taylor sits down with Nikki Kimball to talk ultra running, mental health, and how those two things work together. Nikki is a prolific name in the world of ultra-distance running. She's a multi-time winner of the Western States 100, Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, Marathon Des Sables, and the list goes on and on. Possibly more important than her athletic achievements are her advocacy in the mental health space. She's been very outspoken about her personal struggles with depression, and how she uses her running as a way to cope with that. For more on how the mental and physical aspects of endurance sports work together visit www.thomasendurancecoaching.com.
Kia Ora Whanau. This week Eugene and Matt have the utter pleasure and privilege to speak with Nikki Kimball. Nikki is a legend in ultra running, and one of the pioneers of the modern age of the sport. In the 2000’s and early 2010’s Nikki was arguably the greatest female ultra runner in the world, a three time winner of Western States Endurance Run and winner of Run Rabbit Run, Speedgoat, The Bear 100, UTMB, Tahoe 100 and Marathon Des Sables...To name but a few. In this energetic, warm, and unalloyed conversation, Nikki talks about her return from long term rehabilitation, her background of skiing, how this lead to running, and her place as a trailblazer in women’s ultra marathon and the joy and deep frustration that this brings. We also tackled gender equality and how some race directors in attempting to level the field may perpetuate further inequality. Honest, raw, and deeply entertaining, we had as much fun speaking to Nikki as you will have listening to it. Also, Chris McDougall, if you’re reading… The Physios thank you. Enjoy.
This week, Alyssa and Haley chat with accomplished ultra-runner Nikki Kimball about her Vermont Long Trail FKT and impressive resume of female and overall podiums. Nikki openly talks about the gender disparity in pay from sponsors, the lack of media coverage for women in sport, and how her approach to running has changed as she gets older. Nikki also talks about her decision to publicly share her struggles with depression and how she uses running as part of her therapeutic outlet. Plus, our hosts talk sauna training, competitive pet campaigning, and CBD oil. **Become part of our community of strong, feisty, women by becoming a Live Feisty patron - www.patreon.com/livefeisty** Send your mailbag questions to ironwomenpodcast@gmail.com
Alyssa Godesky is most well-known these days for being a professional triathlete and the co-host of the popular Ironwomen podcast. What isn’t well known is that she was an ultra marathon runner and trail runner, long before she moved into the world of triathlons. In 2018, Alyssa returned to her trail running roots and set out on a mission to break the Fastest Known Time (or FKT) on the Vermont Long Trail in the United States, a 273mi / 440km trail which traverses the State of Vermont from north to south. Now if you saw the film ‘Finding Traction’ on Netflix last year, you know more about the Vermont Long Trail than you might think... That film follows legendary trail runner, Nikki Kimball, on her attempt to break the (men’s) record on the Vermont Long Trail. #spoileralert Nikki misses the men’s record but smashes the women’s record. It turns out that watching ‘Finding Traction’ lit the spark in Alyssa to wonder if she could do it. Fast forward a few years and in 2018 (#spoileralert), Alyssa set a new women’s record of 5 days, 2 hours & 37min, taking over 5 hours off Nikki’s record! In this conversation we discuss: - the self-doubt and fear of failure that nearly stopped the project before she’d even started, - the strategies she used to avoid slipping into comparison with Nikki (who is, on paper, by far the more talented and experienced runner), - the sleep deprivation she experienced (after having only 17 hours of sleep in 5 days), and - the (surprising) impact the run (and the stress from it) had on her body, hormonally. Alyssa is a “Professional Triathlete who can’t seem to shake her ultrarunning habit”. She has finished 30 Ironman Triathlons, 40 ultra races, and once finished 4th in the Taiwan Ironman using all borrowed gear. On July 31, 2018, she set a new women's FKT on Vermont’s 273mi Long Trail of 5 days, 2 hours. Alyssa describes being inspired by Jennifer Pharr Davis and Nikki Kimball, both of whose Long Trail times she bettered, while noting, “Last year was my 4th as a professional triathlete. I needed to do something different - I needed to keep my fire lit”. She once did two Ironmans on successive weekends in different continents, but notes, “The Long Trail was way harder - the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The terrain is so variable - unless you’ve spent time on this trail it’s hard to describe - it changes every few hundred meters - it’s soul-crushing. Alyssa notes that women tend to want to be very prepared before they undertake something, while men are willing to jump in, even if they’re not 100%. So her advice to women? “Go do it. There’s nothing stopping you, because you get to make it your own. It’s like your own version of The Amazing Race - you get to do that yourself with FKTs”.

Nikki Kimball joins us for a candid interview on her OFM Journey from her teenage years as an elite Biathlete to the present! In the natural scheme of things, young people begin to exert independence during this time but as they exert this independence from their parents they also become particularly impressionable to outside influences to anchor to.....Nikki puts this in perspective in amazing ways!
