Tech Bro NonsenseFormer Google CEO Tells Congress That 99 Percent of All Electricity Will Be Used to Power Superintelligent AIbillionaire tech tycoon and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt comments to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce: "What we need from you is we need the energy in all forms, renewable, non-renewable, whatever. It needs to be there, and it needs to be there quickly.""Many people project demand for our industry will go from 3 percent to 99 percent of total generation... an additional 29 gigawatts by 2027 and 67 more gigawatts by 2030. If [China] comes to superintelligence first, it changes the dynamic of power globally, in ways that we have no way of understanding or predicting.”Meta Says It's Okay to Feed Copyrighted Books Into Its AI Model Because They Have No "Economic Value"In the ongoing suit Richard Kadrey et al v. Meta Platforms, led by a group of authors including Pulitzer Prize winner Andrew Sean Greer and National Book Award winner Ta-Nehisi Coates, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company has argued that its alleged scraping of over seven million books from the pirated library LibGen constituted "fair use" of the material, and was therefore not illegal.Meta's attorneys are also arguing that the countless books that the company used to train its multibillion-dollar language models and springboard itself into the headspinningly buzzy AI race are actually worthless. Meta cited an expert witness who downplayed the books' individual importance, averring that a single book adjusted its LLM's performance "by less than 0.06 percent on industry standard benchmarks, a meaningless change no different from noise." Thus there's no market in paying authors to use their copyrighted works, Meta says, because "for there to be a market, there must be something of value to exchange," as quoted by Vanity Fair — "but none of [the authors'] works has economic value, individually, as training data." Other communications showed that Meta employees stripped the copyright pages from the downloaded books.Tellingly, the unofficial policy seems to be to not speak about it at all: "In no case would we disclose publicly that we had trained on LibGen, however there is practical risk external parties could deduce our use of this dataset," an internal Meta slide deck read. The deck noted that "if there is media coverage suggesting we have used a dataset we know to be pirated, such as LibGen, this may undermine our negotiating position with regulators on these issues."Lauren Sánchez in Space Was Marie Antoinette in a Penis-Shaped RocketKaty Perry Boasts About Ridiculous Rocket Launch While NASA Is Scrubbing History of Women in Space“It's about a collective energy and making space for future women. It's about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”Last month, the Orlando Sentinel first reported, NASA scrubbed language from a webpage about the agency's Artemis missions declaring that a goal of the mission was to put the first woman and first person of color on the Moon; just a few days later, NASA Watch reported that comic books imagining the first woman on the Moon had been deleted from NASA's website.A webpage for "Women at NASA" is still standing, but pictures of women and people of color — astronauts, engineers, scientists — have reportedly been removed from NASA's real-world hallways amid the so-called "DEI" purge. Per Scientific American, the word "inclusion" has been removed as one of NASA's core pillars. And as 404 Media reported in February, NASA personnel were directed to remove mentions of women in leadership positions from its website.OpenAI NonsenseOpenAI Is Secretly Building a Social NetworkOpenAI has been secretly building its own social media platform, which The Verge reports is intended to resemble X-formerly-Twitter — the social media middleweight owned by CEO Sam Altman's arch-nemesis, Elon MuskOpenAI updated its safety framework—but no longer sees mass manipulation and disinformation as a critical riskOpenAI said it will stop assessing its AI models prior to releasing them for the risk that they could persuade or manipulate people, possibly helping to swing elections or create highly effective propaganda campaigns. The company said it would now address those risks through its terms of service, restricting the use of its AI models in political campaigns and lobbying, and monitoring how people are using the models once they are released for signs of violations.OpenAI also said it would consider releasing AI models that it judged to be “high risk” as long as it has taken appropriate steps to reduce those dangers—and would even consider releasing a model that presented what it called “critical risk” if a rival AI lab had already released a similar model. Previously, OpenAI had said it would not release any AI model that presented more than a “medium risk.”Saying 'please' and 'thank you' to ChatGPT costs OpenAI millions, Sam Altman saysBeing nice to your AI chatbot requires computational power that raises electricity and water costsAltman responded to a user on X (formerly Twitter) who asked how much the company has lost in electricity costs from people being polite to their models: “Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know,” the CEO wrote.AI models rely heavily on energy stored in global data centers — which already accounts for about 2% of the global electricity consumption. Polite responses also add to OpenAI's water bill. AI uses water to cool the servers that generate the data. A study from the University of California, Riverside, said that using GPT-4 to generate 100 words consumes up to three bottles of water — and even a three-word response such as “You are welcome” uses about 1.5 ounces of water.Antitrust NonsenseTrump DOJ's plan to restructure Google hurts consumers, national security, says exec: 'Wildly overbroad'Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs: "We're very concerned about DOJ's proposal. We think it would hurt American consumers, our economy, our tech leadership, even national security. The proposed reform from DOJ "would result in unprecedented government overreach that would harm American consumers, developers, and small businesses — and jeopardize America's global economic and technological leadership at precisely the moment it's needed most."8 revelations from Mark Zuckerberg's 3 days on the witness stand in Meta's antitrust trialThe FTC alleges Meta "helped cement" its illegal monopoly in the social media market with its acquisition of Instagram and the messaging app WhatsApp more than a decade ago.8 revelations:Antitrust worries surfaced years agoTwo years before the FTC initially sued Meta over allegations that it violated US competition laws, Zuckerberg considered breaking Instagram out into its own company to avoid potential antitrust scrutiny, according to a 2018 internal email revealed by the government at trial."I wonder if we should consider the extreme step of spinning Instagram out as a separate company," Zuckerberg wrote in the email to company executives. "As calls to break up the big tech companies grow, there is a non-trivial chance that we will be forced to spin out Instagram and perhaps WhatsApp in the next 5-10 years anyway." If a break up were to happen, Zuckerberg wrote, history showed that companies could end up better off.Asked about this view at trial, Zuckerberg said, "I'm not sure exactly what I had in mind then."A 'crazy idea' to boost Facebook's relevanceZuckerberg's "crazy idea" for Facebook in 2022 involved purging all users' friends. The CEO — fearful that Facebook was losing cultural relevance — made the proposal in a 2022 email to the social network's top brass."Option 1. Double down on Friending," Zuckerberg wrote in the message. "One potentially crazy idea is to consider wiping everyone's graphs and having them start again."Sheryl Sandberg wanted to play Settlers of CatanZuckerberg once offered to give Sheryl Sandberg, the former COO of Meta, a tutorial in the board game Settlers of Catan. The lesson offer came up in 2012 messages in which the two discussed the fresh $1 billion purchase of Instagram, partially redacted missives presented by the FTC during Zuckerberg's testimony showed."We would love it. I want to learn Settlers of Catan too so we can play," Sandberg told Zuckerberg in the message. He responded: "I can definitely teach you Settlers of Catan. It's very easy to learn."Meta's rivalry with TikTok has only just begunDuring his testimony, Zuckerberg hammered home Meta's argument that the tech giant faces massive competition from other apps, especially TikTok."TikTok is still bigger than either Facebook or Instagram," Zuckerberg testified. "I don't like it when our competitors do better than us. You can sort of bet that I'm not going to rest until we are doing quite a bit better than we are doing now.”Facebook Camera app struggles were a source of worryInstagram's early rise shook Zuckerberg. As his company struggled to mount its response with the Facebook Camera app, the CEO began to lose his patience."What is going on with our photos team?" Zuckerberg wrote in a 2011 message to top executives, as revealed by the FTC in court. Zuckerberg then described a number of individuals, whose names were redacted, as being "checked out." He added another person didn't want "to work with this team because he thinks this team sucks."In May 2012, Facebook launched a photo-sharing app called Facebook Camera, which aims to make it simpler for the social network's users to upload and browse photos on smartphones. Only weeks after Facebook spent $1 billion on a similar photo-sharing app called Instagram. Zuckerberg tried to buy Snapchat for $6 billionZuckerberg's failed bid to buy Snapchat was highlighted by the government to bolster its argument that Meta sought to maintain its dominance in the social media market through acquisitions rather than competition.Facebook isn't really for friends anymoreWhile under questioning by the FTC, Zuckerberg said that Facebook had greatly evolved since he launched the platform more than 20 years ago and that its main purpose wasn't really to connect with friends anymore. The FTC argues that Meta monopolizes the market for "personal social networking services.""The friend part has gone down quite a bit," Zuckerberg testified. He said the Facebook feed has "turned into more of a broad discovery and entertainment space."Not impressed by WhatsApp cofounderZuckerberg wasn't too impressed with one of WhatsApp's cofounders after a 2012 meeting he had with company leadership."I found him fairly impressive although disappointingly (or maybe positive for us) unambitious," Zuckerberg wrote in an email to colleagues after the meeting, it was revealed at trial.Jan Koum and Brian Acton cofounded WhatsApp in 2009. Zuckerberg said in his testimony that he thinks he was referring to Koum. Asked about his email, Zuckerberg seemed uneasy. He said that Koum was clearly smart but that he and Acton were staunchly opposed to growing their messaging app enough to be a real threat to Facebook. Zuckerberg would go on to buy WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion.Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Platforms adds former Trump advisor to the board days before an antitrust showdown with the FTCMeta Platforms is further boosting its lineup of heavy hitters with the additions of Stripe CEO Patrick Collison and Dina Powell McCormick to the mix. He added: “This historical result serves as a wake-up call to BP's board and emphasises investor expectation for robust governance mechanisms and genuine leadership on ESG issues.”Starbucks CEO faces major backlash after details of his work routine are revealed: 'Ill-conceived decision'A press release from the National Center for Public Policy Research reported on the hypocrisy of Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol's transportation practices when considering the company's public commitment to eco-friendly practices.Niccol travels regularly from his home in Newport Beach, California, to Starbucks' headquarters in Seattle, Washington, via private jet. Each 2,000-mile round-trip commute releases nearly nine tons of carbon dioxide. The National Center for Public Policy Research's Free Enterprise Project's director Stefan Padfield pointed out the discrepancy of policy and practice during his presentation of Proposal 8 requesting an annual report on emissions congruency. He noted that each round trip made by Niccol "is roughly the annual energy-consumption footprint of the typical American household."This analogy paints a vivid picture of the hypocrisy between Starbucks' public environmental commitments and the practices of the CEO. Gaps are apparent. Target CEO Cornell meets with Sharpton to discuss DEI rollback as civil rights leader considers boycottCEO Brian Cornell met with the Rev. Al Sharpton in New York on Thursday as the retailer faces calls for a boycott and a slowdown in foot traffic that began after it walked back key diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the civil rights leader told CNBC Wednesday. The meeting, which Target asked for, comes after some civil rights groups urged consumers not to shop at Target in response to the retailer's decision to cut back on DEI. While Sharpton has not yet called for a boycott of Target, he has supported efforts from others to stop shopping at the retailer's stores.“You can't have an election come and all of a sudden, change your old positions,” Sharpton told CNBC in a Wednesday interview ahead of the meeting. “If an election determines your commitment to fairness then fine, you have a right to withdraw from us, but then we have a right to withdraw from you.”IBM Informs Staff of DEI Retreat as Trump-Era Scrutiny GrowsEmployees were told of the changes earlier this week, in a memo that cited “inherent tensions in practicing inclusion.” Legal considerations and shifting attitudes to DEI were among the factors for the company. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna discussed the changes in his monthly video update to employees Thursday.Anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck said he first contacted the company in February to question its policies. IBM confirmed it discussed its changes with Starbuck. The company (-10% gender influence gap) also disbanded a diversity council that represents the views of employee groups as part of its reevaluation.Exxon Faces No Shareholder Proposals for First Time in 25 YearsThe absence of requests in Exxon's proxy statement comes a year after the company sued two climate-focused investors to remove what it described as their “extreme agenda.” It also tracks with the US Securities and Exchange Commission's decision to back guidelines that make it easier for corporations to block votes on shareholder resolutions at their annual meetings.Exxon said in a statement late Monday that it received only one proposal this year and the SEC agreed it should be discarded because “it tried to micromanage the company.”Occidental Petroleum Corp., Valero Energy Corp. and Dow Inc. are other companies with no shareholder proposals up for vote at this year's annual meetings.Exxon said this year marks “the first time in recent history that our proxy includes zero proposals from activists.” It was just four years ago that a small fund scored a victory over Exxon, placing three directors on the company's board.Climate activist shareholder group Follow This pauses big oil campaignClimate activist shareholder group Follow This said on Thursday a lack of investor appetite has forced it to suspend its nearly decade-long campaign seeking stronger commitments from major oil and gas producers to emission cutsHarley-Davidson slams activist investor, saying its campaign is messing up its CEO searchIn early April, H Partners' Jared Dourdeville, who had been a Harley director since 2022, abruptly resigned from the board, saying among other things that Harley had “cultural depletion” because of its work-from-home policies and the exit of several senior leaders. And that was not his only point of contention with the rest of the board.Investment firm H Partners, a major investor with 9.1% of Harley's shares, in an open letter filed on Wednesday, urged fellow shareholders to remove three longtime directors from Harley's eight-member board at its annual meeting in mid-May by withholding votes for them. H Partners wants him out now. That followed a letter issued a day earlier by Harley-Davidson, which accused H Partners of “publicly campaigning” against it and saying that those efforts are also “adversely impacting the CEO search process and ongoing execution of the Hardwire strategic plan,” referring to a turnaround plan it launched in 2021.Harley said that it began a CEO search late last year after Zeitz expressed interest in retiring and has interviewed three potential CEOs, including one supported by Dourdeville, but declined to offer any the job. Democrats once seemed to have a monopoly on Silicon Valley. Perhaps you remember when Elon Musk bought Twitter and posted pictures of cabinets at the old office filled with “#StayWoke” T-shirts. But just as the country is realigning itself along new ideological and political lines, so is the tech capital of the world. In 2024, many of the Valley's biggest tech titans came out with their unabashed support for Donald Trump. There was, of course, Elon Musk. . . but also WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum; Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who run the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini; VCs such as Shaun Maguire, David Sacks, and Chamath Palihapitiya; Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale; Oculus and Anduril founder Palmer Luckey; hedge fund manager Bill Ackman; and today's Honestly guest, one of the world's most influential investors and the man responsible for bringing the internet to the masses—Marc Andreessen.  Marc's history with politics is a long one—but it was always with the Democrats. He supported Democrats including Bill Clinton in 1996, Al Gore in 2000, and John Kerry in 2004. He endorsed Barack Obama in 2008 and then Hillary Clinton in 2016. But over the summer, he announced that he was going to endorse and donate to Trump. Public records show that Marc donated at least $4.5 million to pro-Trump super PACs. Why? Because he believed that the Biden administration had, as he tells us in this conversation, “seething contempt” for tech, and that this election was existential for AI, crypto, and start-ups in America.  Marc got his start as the co-creator of Mosaic, the first widely used web browser, which is said to have launched the internet boom. He then co-founded Netscape, which became the most popular web browser in the '90s, and sold it to AOL in 1999 for $4.2 billion. He later became an angel investor and board member at Facebook. And in 2006, when everyone told Mark Zuckerberg to sell Facebook to Yahoo for $1 billion, Marc was the only voice saying: don't. (Today, Facebook has a market cap of $1.4 trillion.) He now runs a venture capital firm with Ben Horowitz, where they invest in small start-ups that they think have potential to become billion-dollar unicorns. And their track record is pretty spot-on: They invested in Airbnb, Coinbase, Instagram, Instacart, Pinterest, Slack, Reddit, Lyft, and Oculus—to name a few of the unicorns. (And for full disclosure: Marc and his wife were small seed investors in The Free Press.) Marc has built a reputation as someone who can recognize “the next big thing” in tech and, more broadly, in our lives. He has been called the “chief ideologist of the Silicon Valley elite,” a “cultural tastemaker,” and even “Silicon Valley's resident philosopher-king.” Today, Bari and Marc discuss his reasons for supporting Trump—and the vibe shift in Silicon Valley; why he thinks we've been living under soft authoritarianism over the last decade and why it's finally cracking; why he's so confident in Elon Musk and his band of counter-elites; how President Biden tried to kill tech and control AI; why he thinks AI censorship is “a million times more dangerous” than social media censorship; why technologists are the ones to restore American greatness; what Trump serves for dinner; why Marc has spent about half his time at Mar-a-Lago since November 5; and why he thinks it's morning in America. Invincible Career - Claim your power and regain your freedom

Strike 1!“Facebook turned me down. It was a great opportunity to connect with some fantastic people. Looking forward to life's next adventure.”— Brian ActonStrike 2!“Got denied by Twitter HQ. That's ok. Would have been a long commute.”— Brian ActonMost people would experience back-to-back job interview rejections like that and feel pretty discouraged. Who knows? Maybe Brian felt pretty down on those days. However, those rejections were an incredible gift. Brian left his engineering job at Yahoo earlier in 2009 and interviewed with Twitter and Facebook, but both companies rejected him. So, he decided to partner with Jan Koum to start WhatsApp. Five years later, Facebook agreed to acquire WhatsApp for $16B. Yes, $16 billion with a B. The deal left Brian worth over $3B. Not bad for someone who failed his job interview at Facebook five years earlier, huh? So, Brian had missed the opportunity to join Facebook as an engineer and make a few million dollars. Heck, the stock may have made him worth tens of millions later. Ok, let’s be even more generous. Hundreds of millions. However, the gift of their rejection was worth so much more. Billions more. I’m guessing that Brian looks back on that job interview and thanks his lucky stars that it didn’t work out. There are so many more stories like this about the silver lining of rejection. For example:Whitney Wolfe Herd was a co-founder of Tinder, but faced sexual harassment in the company and filed a lawsuit. She left Tinder in 2014, founded Bumble, and took the company public in 2021. She’s currently worth $740M. Ten years ago, Simu Liu got laid off as an accountant by the consulting firm Deloitte. However, it was one of the best things that happened to him because it forced him to invest in his acting career. Now, you probably know him as the star of the Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. As painful as rejection and failure might feel in the moment, sometimes that becomes a positive turning point. Being forced out of a comfortable situation and knocked off a predictable path may very well challenge you to pursue something even better for your life and career. Bad stuff happens“If at first you don’t succeed, you're in luck. Effortless excellence is a lousy teacher and a fickle friend.” — Adam GrantSome really bad stuff is happening right now. Companies are freezing hiring. Job offers are being rescinded.Thousands of people are being laid off and fired. Crypto is imploding. Investment portfolios are losing value. You may be experiencing some of this. Or, you’ve had some of these bad experiences in the past. We all also know that we will experience some sort of failure or rejection in the future. It’s an inevitable side effect of being human. I've taken a few hard knocks myself over the years. At the time, they felt like the end of the world. I knew that a leadership and organizational change had essentially ended my internal career at one company. I was once laid off shortly after a startup acquisition. A massive change in strategy and leadership at another company meant that my future there was pretty much over. Hey, sh*t happens. In the corporate world, it happens often. You have to get used to it and roll with the punches. When your professional future is disrupted, don't wallow in despair and feel sad about what you lost. Instead, see it as an opportunity to challenge your assumptions about who you are and what you want for your life. When you feel you have nothing to lose, you can take a risk and fail forward. Reach for something bigger and more audacious. Hell, if it helps, use your anger to fuel your comeback and prove people wrong. Nothing will upset your "haters" more than your success and happiness. A weak Yes is the kiss of death“Most humans, in varying degrees, are already dead. In one way or another they have lost their dreams, their ambitions, their desire for a better life. They have surrendered their fight for self-esteem and they have compromised their great potential. They have settled for a life of mediocrity, days of despair and nights of tears.”— Og MandinoI would rather hear a firm Yes or No than a Maybe. I hate maybes.Maybe next timeMaybe next yearMaybe if you ask me again later Maybe if things change A weak Yes isn’t much better. It feels like a consolation prize.“You weren’t our first choice. But the other candidate turned our offer down, so now we’d like to make you an offer!” “You’re meeting expectations. Keep up the great work!”“No one else is available, so we’re putting you on the project.”Working in a job where you’re not appreciated or challenged is a weak Yes. You can continue in that cruise control mode for years. Some people spend their entire career in a company like that. I guess that’s ok if a job is just a job for someone. But, if you’re ambitious and want more for your career, you have to move up or on. However, change is hard and the unknown can be a bit scary. It’s not easy to willingly quit a solid job and give up a steady paycheck. Sometimes people need a push out of the warm nest. That “push” may come in the form of a layoff, for example. But, if and when it happens, it’s time to seize the moment to do something greater with your career and life. How to turn rejection into an opportunity“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” — Henry FordEvery failure is a learning opportunity. Every rejection is your chance to challenge yourself to reach for something even greater. Don’t let it push you into a position of fear and doubt. Don’t be tempted to play safer and smaller. Perhaps I have a strange reaction to failure and rejection, but I think it has served me well. When it happens, I get a feeling of, “What have I got to lose? If I’m going to fail, I’d rather fail while trying to do something even bigger and more audacious.”Here are a few steps I recommend when you experience rejection. This process can help you transform failure into a launchpad for your next success. 1. RecoverTake some time to grieve the loss, recover, and process what happened. We aren’t machines. Rejection hurts. Failure isn’t fun. However, you can also work on your mindset and how you view failure. The only people who never experience the pain of rejection and failure are those who never try. They play it safe, but they don’t achieve great things in their lives. Chasing what you want requires risk. If you want to accomplish amazing things, you have to take a swing — multiple swings — and accept that failure is part of the process. Use it to get better and learn how to improve your strategy and execution. 2. LearnWhat can you learn from what happened? Every failure and setback is an opportunity to reevaluate your strategy. Was your approach sound or not? Do you need to make some changes?Sometimes your strategy was solid, but your execution was flawed. If so, understand what went wrong and what needs to change next time. We all fail, but not everyone learns from their failures. Make sure you do so you can improve your odds of success later. 3. RetargetWhat’s your new target? After a failure or rejection, you may need to identify a new goal. What you wanted may never work out. Or, you may have another shot later, but you still need a win now. Of course, this depends on what you were trying to accomplish and the nature of your failure or rejection. Your original goal may still be valid, but you need to adjust your plan to reach it. 4. PlanTake what you learned in step 2 and use it to tune your strategy. It might be time to try a different approach. Update your plan to execute that strategy and move forward. Sometimes, we fail because we failed to plan in the first place. If that was the case, now is the time to create a plan to reach your goal vs. shooting from the hip again. If it’s important to you, it’s worth taking the time to prepare well. 5. PrepareFailure taught you a lesson, so now you can better prepare for the next opportunity. When we see talented people succeed, they sometimes make it all seem so effortless. We think, “It must be nice!”However, almost every successful person you see worked harder, failed more often, and kept pushing forward more than you’ll ever know. Remember, you’re seeing people’s public lives, not their private struggles. Strong preparation increases your odds of success. But it also serves a secondary purpose. When you know you gave something your all, you will feel proud of yourself no matter what the outcome is vs. feeling bad and blaming yourself for not trying hard enough. 6. RebuildBelieve me, I know how much rejection and failure can do a number on your confidence. After one of my worst failures, I doubted myself for months and it killed any chance I had of securing a new win. It took me a long time to get my mojo back and recover my full confidence. But I finally did, and it made all the difference in the world. So, do whatever it takes to rebuild and boost your confidence. Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Invest in your health and wellness. Take a vacation, clear your head, and come back stronger. So much of what we achieve in life is due to having the confidence to pursue it. 7. ConquerIt will happen eventually. You will conquer that next challenge. Grit and determination matter more than people think. Persistence pays off. Here is what I think you’ll discover: There’s a silver lining to failure and rejection. Losing something or not getting what you thought you wanted can often be a blessing in disguise. Something better is waiting for you! Turn failure into fuel“Success is your ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” — Winston ChurchillEvery time I failed in life, something better came along. Every time someone rejected me, I ended up in a better place. Ok, here’s a question. Did I actually end up in a better place after rejection and failure or do I only perceive that things turned out for the better? The answer is that it doesn’t matter. Perception is reality. What I think and how I feel is all that matters. And, I feel damn good about how my career and life have turned out. Maybe all I did was turn lemons into lemonade. But I know that I’m happier, healthier, and more fulfilled than I was before. So, I’ll drink that lemonade every day and smile. I can tell you I’ve witnessed the same with many of my clients. They sometimes end up in an unpleasant situation at work, things go south, and they feel like it’s the end of the world. Maybe they’re still going to work every day, but they’re miserable. Or maybe they eventually get caught up in a layoff, get fired, or quit and walk away. But we find a way out of that terrible situation and transform the darkness into light. They fail forward and end up in a much better place. One client recently experienced that and landed an amazing job that almost doubled his compensation. I’d say that’s a pretty nice outcome after feeling burned by a temporary rejection! So, the next time you’re facing failure or stinging from rejection, I want you to take a moment and remember these stories. Not only is there a light at the end of the tunnel, but your future may also be even brighter because of that failure and rejection! Sometimes we need to be forced out of our comfort zone and reminded of what we really want most for our lives. It can ignite your bravery and passion to pursue what you’ve always dreamed of doing. Sencillamente no existen buenos o malos momentos.

This week we open up with a frank discussion of Chad’s recent bout of shingles (which is the reason we missed last week’s episode). Our billionaire in the news this week is Jan Koum, creator of WhatsApp. He’s in the news because he just bought an $80 million house. Aside from buying mansions, Koum collects Porsches. That’s pretty much all he does these days. He proudly claims not to have any other ambitions. He’s not working on or investing in any new technologies. He doesn’t even have a job as far as we can tell. After studying so many self-aggrandizing and deluded billionaires, his lack of motivation is actually sort of refreshing. Joe introduces us to Tom and Judy Love, founders of Love Travel Stops & Country Stores. They were innovators in the convenience store game. Judy once taunted LeBron James (check the vid below), but otherwise has stayed out of the public eye. Tom Love has been featured as a guest on Chickasaw.tv, and just this year was inducted into the Chickasaw Hall of Fame. Joe weaves a theory for us about American dietary habits. He argues that we love snacks, but we don’t care much about their quality, and he has the stats to back it up. It seems that we just want to shove sugar and salt into our big, dumb mouths. Chad discusses George Bishop, a mysterious Texas energy billionaire. There are zero pictures and scant information about Bishop. However, he does offer us a chance to talk about the various ways LLCs are used to obscure identities and evade taxes, sport-fishing extortion schemes, the absolutely dire future we can expect regarding fossil fuel extraction, and the rapidly-growing world of Sharia-compliant finance. The conversation goes off in a bunch of different directions, possibly as a consequence of too many shingles meds, but we hope it remains interesting for our dear listeners nonetheless.
1. When you need someone to faithfully implement your time-tested policies and procedures, hire a straight-A student. This is what we know about them: A. They bought into the educational system, believed its promises, and played by its rules. B. They have demonstrated obedience, compliance, and conformity. C. They have obvious respect for authority. And these are not bad things. 2. When you need to innovate, improvise or reinvent, hire a rascal.1This is what we know about them: A. They mistrust the system, laugh at its promises, and make up their own rules. B. They have demonstrated disobedience, defiance, and abnormity. C. They have obvious respect for alternative thinking. Steve Jobs was a rascal with an unimpressive résumé. When Steve applied for a job at Hewlett-Packard in 1977, they rejected him because he had dropped out of Reed College in 1972. “Quitters never win.” That's the traditional wisdom. Ask any high school football coach. And Steve Jobs was definitely a quitter. Jan Koum was a bonafide rascal. When he was 20, his ex-girlfriend got a restraining order against him. He later said, “I am ashamed of the way I acted, and ashamed that my behavior forced her to take legal action”. Jan Koum was also a quitter. Facebook refused to hire him in 2008 because he had dropped out of San Jose State. Here's what was on Jan's resume for the previous year: “I traveled around South America playing ultimate frisbee.” I can almost see that HR director rolling her eyes, can't you?In 2009, Jan Koum founded WhatsApp, an innovation he sold to Facebook in 2014 for $9.1 billion. Steve Jobs and Jan Koum are mentioned in the opening paragraph of a 59-page study2 published by two academicians in 2017. That paper is titled Asymmetric Information and Entrepreneurship. Its scholarly authors reached their conclusions only after analyzing 12,686 individuals over a period of more than 30 years. I'll do my best to summarize those 59 pages:“A person is motivated to start their own business when they have more confidence in their ability than they have in their résumé.” – Roy H. Williams There. I've put 59 pages into a single sentence. Perhaps I should become an ad writer. Roy H. This week on BSDNow, we have a very special guest joining us to tell us a tale of the early days in BSD history. That plus some new OpenSSH goodness, shell scripting utilities and much more. Stay tuned for your place to B...SD! This episode was brought to you by Headlines Call For Testing: OpenSSH 7.4 (http://marc.info/?l=openssh-unix-dev&m=148167688911316&w=2) Getting ready to head into the holidays for for the end of 2016 means some of us will have spare time on our hands. What a perfect time to get some call for testing work done! Damien Miller has issued a public CFT for the upcoming OpenSSH 7.4 release, which considering how much we all rely on SSH I would expect will get some eager volunteers for testing. What are some of the potential breakers? “* This release removes server support for the SSH v.1 protocol. ssh(1): Remove 3des-cbc from the client's default proposal. 64-bit block ciphers are not safe in 2016 and we don't want to wait until attacks like SWEET32 are extended to SSH. As 3des-cbc was the only mandatory cipher in the SSH RFCs, this may cause problems connecting to older devices using the default configuration, but it's highly likely that such devices already need explicit configuration for key exchange and hostkey algorithms already anyway. sshd(8): Remove support for pre-authentication compression. Doing compression early in the protocol probably seemed reasonable in the 1990s, but today it's clearly a bad idea in terms of both cryptography (cf. multiple compression oracle attacks in TLS) and attack surface. Pre-auth compression support has been disabled by default for >10 years. Support remains in the client. ssh-agent will refuse to load PKCS#11 modules outside a whitelist of trusted paths by default. The path whitelist may be specified at run-time. sshd(8): When a forced-command appears in both a certificate and an authorized keys/principals command= restriction, sshd will now refuse to accept the certificate unless they are identical. The previous (documented) behaviour of having the certificate forced-command override the other could be a bit confusing and error-prone. sshd(8): Remove the UseLogin configuration directive and support for having /bin/login manage login sessions.“ What about new features? 7.4 has some of those to wake you up also: “* ssh(1): Add a proxy multiplexing mode to ssh(1) inspired by the version in PuTTY by Simon Tatham. This allows a multiplexing client to communicate with the master process using a subset of the SSH packet and channels protocol over a Unix-domain socket, with the main process acting as a proxy that translates channel IDs, etc. This allows multiplexing mode to run on systems that lack file- descriptor passing (used by current multiplexing code) and potentially, in conjunction with Unix-domain socket forwarding, with the client and multiplexing master process on different machines. Multiplexing proxy mode may be invoked using "ssh -O proxy ..." sshd(8): Add a sshdconfig DisableForwaring option that disables X11, agent, TCP, tunnel and Unix domain socket forwarding, as well as anything else we might implement in the future. Like the 'restrict' authorizedkeys flag, this is intended to be a simple and future-proof way of restricting an account. sshd(8), ssh(1): Support the "curve25519-sha256" key exchange method. This is identical to the currently-support method named "curve25519-sha256@libssh.org". sshd(8): Improve handling of SIGHUP by checking to see if sshd is already daemonised at startup and skipping the call to daemon(3) if it is. This ensures that a SIGHUP restart of sshd(8) will retain the same process-ID as the initial execution. sshd(8) will also now unlink the PidFile prior to SIGHUP restart and re-create it after a successful restart, rather than leaving a stale file in the case of a configuration error. bz#2641 sshd(8): Allow ClientAliveInterval and ClientAliveCountMax directives to appear in sshd_config Match blocks. sshd(8): Add %-escapes to AuthorizedPrincipalsCommand to match those supported by AuthorizedKeysCommand (key, key type, fingerprint, etc.) and a few more to provide access to the contents of the certificate being offered. Added regression tests for string matching, address matching and string sanitisation functions. Improved the key exchange fuzzer harness.“ Get those tests done and be sure to send feedback, both positive and negative. *** How My Printer Caused Excessive Syscalls & UDP Traffic (https://zinascii.com/2014/how-my-printer-caused-excessive-syscalls.html) “3,000 syscalls a second, on an idle machine? That doesn't seem right. I just booted this machine. The only processes running are those required to boot the SmartOS Global Zone, which is minimal.” This is a story from 2014, about debugging a machine that was being slowed down by excessive syscalls and UDP traffic. It is also an excellent walkthrough of the basics of DTrace “Well, at least I have DTrace. I can use this one-liner to figure out what syscalls are being made across the entire system.” dtrace -n 'syscall:::entry { @[probefunc,probename] = count(); }' “Wow! That is a lot of lwpsigmask calls. Now that I know what is being called, it's time to find out who is doing the calling? I'll use another one-liner to show me the most common user stacks invoking lwpsigmask.” dtrace -n 'syscall::lwp_sigmask:entry { @[ustack()] = count(); }' “Okay, so this mdnsd code is causing all the trouble. What is the distribution of syscalls for the mdnsd program?” dtrace -n 'syscall:::entry /execname == "mdnsd"/ { @[probefunc] = count(); } tick-1s { exit(0); }' “Lots of signal masking and polling. What the hell! Why is it doing this? What is mdnsd anyways? Is there a man page? Googling for mdns reveals that it is used for resolving host names in small networks, like my home network. It uses UDP, and requires zero configuration. Nothing obvious to explain why it's flipping out. I feel helpless. I turn to the only thing I can trust, the code.” “Woah boy, this is some messy looking code. This would not pass illumos cstyle checks. Turns out this is code from Darwin—the kernel of OSX.” “Hmmm…an idea pops into my computer animal brain. I wonder…I wonder if my MacBook is also experiencing abnormal syscall rates? Nooo, that can't be it. Why would both my SmartOS server and MacBook both have the same problem? There is no good technical reason to link these two. But, then again, I'm dealing with computers here, and I've seen a lot of strange things over the years—I switch to my laptop.” sudo dtrace -n 'syscall::: { @[execname] = count(); } tick-1s { exit(0); }' Same thing, except mdns is called discoverd on OS X “I ask my friend Steve Vinoski to run the same DTrace one-liner on his OSX machines. He has both Yosemite and the older Mountain Lion. But, to my dismay, neither of his machines are exhibiting high syscall rates. My search continues.” “Not sure what to do next, I open the OSX Activity Monitor. In desperation I click on the Network tab.” “ HOLE—E—SHIT! Two-Hundred-and-Seventy Million packets received by discoveryd. Obviously, I need to stop looking at code and start looking at my network. I hop back onto my SmartOS machine and check network interface statistics.” “Whatever is causing all this, it is sending about 200 packets a second. At this point, the only thing left to do is actually inspect some of these incoming packets. I run snoop(1M) to collect events on the e1000g0 interface, stopping at about 600 events. Then I view the first 15.” “ A constant stream of mDNS packets arriving from IP 10.0.1.8. I know that this IP is not any of my computers. The only devices left are my iPhone, AppleTV, and Canon printer. Wait a minute! The printer! Two days earlier I heard some beeping noises…” “I own a Canon PIXMA MG6120 printer. It has a touch interface with a small LCD at the top, used to set various options. Since it sits next to my desk I sometimes lay things on top of it like a book or maybe a plate after I'm done eating. If I lay things in the wrong place it will activate the touch interface and cause repeated pressing. Each press makes a beeping noise. If the object lays there long enough the printer locks up and I have to reboot it. Just such events occurred two days earlier.” “I fire up dladm again to monitor incoming packets in realtime. Then I turn to the printer. I move all the crap off of it: two books, an empty plate, and the title for my Suzuki SV650 that I've been meaning to sell for the last year. I try to use the touch screen on top of the printer. It's locked up, as expected. I cut power to the printer and whip my head back to my terminal.” No more packet storm “Giddy, I run DTrace again to count syscalls.” “I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. I laugh, because, LOL computers. There's some new dumb shit you deal with everyday, better to roll with the punches and laugh. You live longer that way. At least I got to flex my DTrace muscles a bit. In fact, I felt a bit like Brendan Gregg when he was debugging why OSX was dropping keystrokes.” “I didn't bother to root cause why my printer turned into a UDP machine gun. I don't intend to either. I have better things to do, and if rebooting solves the problem then I'm happy. Besides, I had to get back to what I was trying to do six hours before I started debugging this damn thing.” There you go. The Internet of Terror has already been on your LAN for years. Making Getaddrinfo Concurrent in Python on Mac OS and BSD (https://emptysqua.re/blog/getaddrinfo-cpython-mac-and-bsd/) We have a very fun blog post today to pass along originally authored by “A. Jesse Jiryu Davis”. Specifically the tale of one man's quest to unify the Getaddrinfo in Python with Mac OS and BSD. To give you a small taste of this tale, let us pass along just the introduction “Tell us about the time you made DNS resolution concurrent in Python on Mac and BSD. No, no, you do not want to hear that story, my friends. It is nothing but old lore and #ifdefs. But you made Python more scalable. The saga of Steve Jobs was sung to you by a mysterious wizard with a fanciful nickname! Tell us! Gather round, then. I will tell you how I unearthed a lost secret, unbound Python from old shackles, and banished an ancient and horrible Mutex Troll. Let us begin at the beginning.“ Is your interest piqued? It should be. I'm not sure we could do this blog post justice trying to read it aloud here, but definetly recommend if you want to see how he managed to get this bit of code working cross platform. (And it's highly entertaining as well) “A long time ago, in the 1980s, a coven of Berkeley sorcerers crafted an operating system. They named it after themselves: the Berkeley Software Distribution, or BSD. For generations they nurtured it, growing it and adding features. One night, they conjured a powerful function that could resolve hostnames to IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. It was called getaddrinfo. The function was mighty, but in years to come it would grow dangerous, for the sorcerers had not made getaddrinfo thread-safe.” “As ages passed, BSD spawned many offspring. There were FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, and in time, Mac OS X. Each made its copy of getaddrinfo thread safe, at different times and different ways. Some operating systems retained scribes who recorded these events in the annals. Some did not.” The story continues as our hero battles the Mutex Troll and quests for ancient knowledge “Apple engineers are not like you and me — they are a shy and secretive folk. They publish only what code they must from Darwin. Their comings and goings are recorded in no bug tracker, their works in no changelog. To learn their secrets, one must delve deep.” “There is a tiny coven of NYC BSD users who meet at the tavern called Stone Creek, near my dwelling. They are aged and fierce, but I made the Sign of the Trident and supplicated them humbly for advice, and they were kindly to me.” Spoiler: “Without a word, the mercenary troll shouldered its axe and trudged off in search of other patrons on other platforms. Never again would it hold hostage the worthy smiths forging Python code on BSD.” *** Using release(7) to create FreeBSD images for OpenStack (https://diegocasati.com/2016/12/13/using-release7-to-create-freebsd-images-for-openstack-yes-you-can-do-it/) Following a recent episode where we covered a walk through on how to create FreeBSD guest OpenStack images, we wondered if it would be possible to integrate this process into the FreeBSD release(7) process, so they images could be generated consistently and automatically Being the awesome audience that you are, one of you responded by doing exactly that “During a recent BSDNow podcast, Allan and Kris mentioned that it would be nice to have a tutorial on how to create a FreeBSD image for OpenStack using the official release(7) tools. With that, it came to me that: #1 I do have access to an OpenStack environment and #2 I am interested in having FreeBSD as a guest image in my environment. Looks like I was up for the challenge.” “Previously, I've had success running FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE on OpenStack but more could/should be done. For instance, as suggested by Allan, wouldn't be nice to deploy the latest code from FreeBSD ? Running -STABLE or even -CURRENT ? Yes, it would. Also, wouldn't it be nice to customize these images for a specific need? I'd say ‘Yes' for that as well.” “After some research I found that the current openstack.conf file, located at /usr/src/release/tools/ could use some extra tweaks to get where I wanted. I've created and attached that to a bugzilla on the same topic. You can read about that here (https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=213396).” Steps: Fetch the FreeBSD source code and extract it under /usr/src Once the code is in place, follow the regular process of build(7) and perform a make buildworld buildkernel Change into the release directory (/usr/src/release) and perform a make cloudware make cloudware-release WITH_CLOUDWARE=yes CLOUDWARE=OPENSTACK VMIMAGE=2G “That's it! This will generate a qcow2 image with 1.4G in size and a raw image of 2G. The entire process uses the release(7) toolchain to generate the image and should work with newer versions of FreeBSD.” + The patch has already been committed to FreeBSD (https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=310047) Interview - Rod Grimes - rgrimes@freebsd.org (mailto:rgrimes@freebsd.org) Want to help fund the development of GPU Passthru? Visit bhyve.org (http://bhyve.org/) *** News Roundup Configuring the FreeBSD automounter (http://blog.khubla.com/freebsd/configuring-the-freebsd-automounter) Ever had to configure the FreeBSD auto-mounting daemon? Today we have a blog post that walks us through a few of the configuration knobs you have at your disposal. First up, Tom shows us his /etc/fstab file, and the various UFS partitions he has setup with the ‘noauto' flag so they are not mounted at system boot. His amd.conf file is pretty basic, with just options enabled to restart mounts, and unmount on exit. Where most users will most likely want to pay attention is in the crafting of an amd.map file Within this file, we have the various command-foo which performs mounts and unmounts of targeted disks / file-systems on demand. Pay special attention to all the special chars, since those all matter and a stray or missing ; could be a source of failure. Lastly a few knobs in rc.conf will enable the various services and a reboot should confirm the functionality. *** l2k16 hackathon report: LibreSSL manuals now in mdoc(7) (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20161114174451) Hackathon report by Ingo Schwarze “Back in the spring two years ago, Kristaps Dzonsons started the pod2mdoc(1) conversion utility, and less than a month later, the LibreSSL project began. During the general summer hackathon in the same year, g2k14, Anthony Bentley started using pod2mdoc(1) for converting LibreSSL manuals to mdoc(7).” “Back then, doing so still was a pain, because pod2mdoc(1) was still full of bugs and had gaping holes in functionality. For example, Anthony was forced to basically translate the SYNOPSIS sections by hand, and to fix up .Fn and .Xr in the body by hand as well. All the same, he speedily finished all of libssl, and in the autumn of the same year, he mustered the courage to commit his work.” “Near the end of the following winter, i improved the pod2mdoc(1) tool to actually become convenient in practice and started work on libcrypto, converting about 50 out of the about 190 manuals. Max Fillinger also helped a bit, converting a handful of pages, but i fear i tarried too much checking and committing his work, so he quickly gave up on the task. After that, almost nothing happened for a full year.” “Now i was finally fed up with the messy situation and decided to put an end to it. So i went to Toulouse and finished the conversion of the remaining 130 manual pages in libcrypto, such that you can now view the documentation of all functions” Interactive Terminal Utility: smenu (https://github.com/p-gen/smenu) Ok, I've made no secret of my love for shell scripting. Well today we have a new (somewhat new to us) tool to bring your way. Have you ever needed to deal with large lists of data, perhaps as the result of a long specially crafted pipe? What if you need to select a specific value from a range and then continue processing? Enter ‘smenu' which can help make your scripting life easier. “smenu is a selection filter just like sed is an editing filter. This simple tool reads words from the standard input, presents them in a cool interactive window after the current line on the terminal and writes the selected word, if any, on the standard output. After having unsuccessfully searched the NET for what I wanted, I decided to try to write my own. I have tried hard to made its usage as simple as possible. It should work, even when using an old vt100 terminal and is UTF-8 aware.“ What this means, is in your interactive scripts, you can much easier present the user with a cursor driven menu to select from a range of possible choices. (Without needing to craft a bunch of dialog flags) Take a look, and hopefully you'll be able to find creative uses for your shell scripts in the future. *** Ubuntu still isn't free software (http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/45939.html) “Any redistribution of modified versions of Ubuntu must be approved, certified or provided by Canonical if you are going to associate it with the Trademarks. Otherwise you must remove and replace the Trademarks and will need to recompile the source code to create your own binaries. This does not affect your rights under any open source licence applicable to any of the components of Ubuntu. If you need us to approve, certify or provide modified versions for redistribution you will require a licence agreement from Canonical, for which you may be required to pay. For further information, please contact us” “Mark Shuttleworth just blogged (http://insights.ubuntu.com/2016/12/01/taking-a-stand-against-unstable-risky-unofficial-ubuntu-images/) about their stance against unofficial Ubuntu images. The assertion is that a cloud hoster is providing unofficial and modified Ubuntu images, and that these images are meaningfully different from upstream Ubuntu in terms of their functionality and security. Users are attempting to make use of these images, are finding that they don't work properly and are assuming that Ubuntu is a shoddy product. This is an entirely legitimate concern, and if Canonical are acting to reduce user confusion then they should be commended for that.” “The appropriate means to handle this kind of issue is trademark law. If someone claims that something is Ubuntu when it isn't, that's probably an infringement of the trademark and it's entirely reasonable for the trademark owner to take action to protect the value associated with their trademark. But Canonical's IP policy goes much further than that - it can be interpreted as meaning[1] that you can't distribute works based on Ubuntu without paying Canonical for the privilege, even if you call it something other than Ubuntu. [1]: And by "interpreted as meaning" I mean that's what it says and Canonical refuse to say otherwise” “If you ask a copyright holder if you can give a copy of their work to someone else (assuming it doesn't infringe trademark law), and they say no or insist you need an additional contract, it's not free software. If they insist that you recompile source code before you can give copies to someone else, it's not free software. Asking that you remove trademarks that would otherwise infringe trademark law is fine, but if you can't use their trademarks in non-infringing ways, that's still not free software.” “Canonical's IP policy continues to impose restrictions on all of these things, and therefore Ubuntu is not free software.” Beastie Bits OPNsense 16.7.10 released (https://opnsense.org/opnsense-16-7-10-released/) OpenBSD Foundation Welcomes First Iridium Donor: Smartisan (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20161123193708&mode=expanded&count=8) Jan Koum donates $500,000 to FreeBSD (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/blog/foundation-announces-new-uranium-donor/) The Soviet Russia, BSD makes you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEMOS) Feedback/Questions Jason - Value (http://pastebin.com/gRN4Lzy8) Hamza - Shell Scripting (http://pastebin.com/GZYjRmSR) Blog link (http://aikchar.me/blog/unix-shell-programming-lessons-learned.html) Dave - Migrating to FreeBSD (http://pastebin.com/hEBu3Drp) Dan - Which BSD? In Spenderlaune? Wir haben Flattr und PayPal am Start und würden uns freuen.
