For Long Island, New York-based entrepreneurial brothers Howard and Steven Silverstein, a fueling issue during a day on the water led to an a-ha moment that inspired an invention: the CLiX. Designed to prevent fuel spills, wasted gas and messy cleanups, the CLiX is a one-click spill prevention system for gasoline and diesel boats – a $39.95 funnel-shaped secure attachment that keeps every drop of fuel in the boat tank. With its custom-blended, biodegradable rubberized material and patent-pending technology, the CLiX is safe for users and the environment, helping boaters fuel up without the fuel ever overflowing onto the vessel or into the water.“I remember when my brother, Steven, asked me to come out on his boat for a day on the water. We had never been to the boat and were very excited about it. When we got there, it turned out that Steven had not been able to fuel it up that day as he normally would for company,” Howard said about the March 2024 outing at the Huntington Yacht Club in New York. “So, there I was, standing with him on the fuel dock while he fueled his boat up. He was calling out to his wife about the fuel level, and she was calling back. It was obvious that this was not like filling a car. It was stressful. I did not know that filling a boat was this difficult.” Steven explained the fueling dilemma to Howard, who examined the problem and instantly came up with a solution. “I sketched it out, and the unit you see now looks almost exactly like what I drew that day,” Howard said. Because Steven's fueling problem was not unique to him, Howard knew he was on to something marketable with his invention. In October 2024, the CLiX officially launched at the IBEX show in Tampa, Florida. The positive feedback has been due, in part, to the fact that there is no other product on the market that does what the CLiX does. “It keeps the fuel in the fill tube and tank where it belongs,” Howard said. “It allows the fueling nozzle to activate the same way it does when filling a car, bringing that level of ease and eliminating all the stress of fueling.” The Silversteins are currently working with select marinas for them to sell directly to their customers and for use by staff as they fuel boats. “We have programs where the marinas can act as either affiliates, receiving a commission for every CLiX sold through our site, or as partners where they buy at a reseller price and sell direct to their marina clients,” Howard said. They are also working on sponsoring programs at marinas. The pair has brought on new partner Greg Friedman to assist with these initiatives. “The programs are focused on the environmental impact of boating and what we all can do to help,” Howard saidT he Silversteins pointed to how marinas can benefit from utilizing the CLiX. “Few spills to clean up means less reporting and less possibility of code violations,” Howard said. “By acting as good stewards of the water around their docks, they keep it free of fuel, creating a healthy environment for the marine life, which marina owners and boaters care so much about." The CLiX won a coveted Innovation Award for 2024 at the IBEX show, and it was also featured at the New York Boat Show and the Miami Boat Show. Garnering these accolades has been a professional coup for the Silversteins, who have both thrived in various business positions throughout their careers. Howard is already working on several other innovative ideas that may continue to help boaters have tranquil experiences on the water.

Jeff Wasil is the Director of the National Marine Manufactures Association (NMMA) and I caught up with him at the recent Miami Boat Show. Not only is he responsible for environment, health, and safety at the NMMA he also leads global marine regulatory development and is a key member of marine industry technical projects. With over 20 years of experience in emissions compliance, he was the perfect guest to follow ICOMIA President Darren Vaux's podcast where over two episode he shared the findings and learnings that Jeff goes deep and wide about in this episode. Jeff serves as the Chairman of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) Marine Engine Committee, and is the Chairman of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Board of Directors. He has also served as a project leader for NMMA's marine greenhouse gas emissions task force. In the last fifteen years this has let him to publish and present many technical papers on marine emissions including particulate matter, gaseous emissions, bioassay analysis, life-cycle emissions and alternative fuels even testifying before the U.S Congressional Committee on Science Space and Technology. We talk all things ethanol-extended fuels and biofuels such as biobutanol. Jeff is an avid lifetime boater and understands and appreciates the joys of recreational boating and in not surprisingly he grew up boating and fishing. What I loved about this conversation was Jeff's unique ability to break-down complex technical issues into easily understood topics and his humbleness in receiving multiple Environmental Awards including The Business Friend of the Environment Award, Green Masters Award, and The Earth Day Sustainability Award. You can find any one of his 100+ published articles and media including the Washington Examiner, Journal Sentinel, Boat US Magazine, Boating industry, Trade Only, Journal Times, as well as multiple outdoor recreation magazines. Episode 21: This episode is Part 2 of the interviews Molley and Chad conducted from the Lake Cumberland State Dock Dock Crawl 2022 event. People who embrace the lake life love talking about their boats, the experience and what makes lake life so special. Note: This event is definitely a party atmosphere. They had a great time experiencing the fun and conducting interviews for the podcast. Some of the interviews may not be suitable for children, so you may want to listen to Dock Crawl episodes when they're not around. Did you miss Part 1 of this Molley and Chad at this event? Click this link to listen to Part 1 of the State Dock Dock Crawl 2022. Interview with Susan and Jeff These two literally just met before sitting down for an interview. Susan doesn't own a boat, but she's staying with friends who have boats. If she were to win the lottery, Susan says she'd buy a houseboat to enable all of her friends to get together on the lake. Jeff would also like to buy a houseboat with his lottery winnings. He's currently experiencing life on the water with his kayak. Susan loves being in a cove on the lake, where the water is calm and relaxing. It would be ideal to have just a couple of other boats anchored along with her. She'd be able to play her own music without competing with the other boaters. Jeff went to a poker run, last year, for the first time. He loved it! They rented a houseboat and had a great time. There was at least 15 people from several different states. Jeff's owned a couple of boats, in the past. One of them was a fishing boat. Unfortunately, he struggles to find time to use it because of all of the activities with the kids. Interview with Courtney and Andrew (and Scooter) Courtney is helping to run the event this year. Her mom, Tina, actually started the Dock Crawl 6 years ago to help people to really get people to know each other at State Dock on Lake Cumberland. Unfortunately, Tina was injured in a boating accident during a poker run, in August. She's recovering well and hopes to be back, next year. Courtney admires her mom. Tina is definitely a free-spirt. The first year of the event, the Dock Crawl just involved 1 row of boaters. It continued to grow each year since then as more people joined in began making it the event it is today. The pandemic caused them to postpone the event in 2020. In 2021, the event exploded with people and boats. Andrew explains that the State Dock Dock Crawl usually begins on the 600 row each year. Courtney and Andrew met through mutual friends, five years ago. They both grew up on Lake Cumberland. They had some interesting things in common and it lead to a great relationship. If Andrew wins the lottery, he would buy a 388 Skater Powerboat. Courtney is in complete agreement. Their goal is to go fast! Molley describes a recent visit to the Miami Boat Show. An optimistic sales rep did his best to get them into a new boat for poker runs. Molley asks Courtney about the impact of the Dock Crawl on the local community. The most important aspect is how it brings everyone together, according to Courtney. The dock is big, so this is a terrific opportunity to meet people from other rows. Friendships are made every year. The entire event makes it such a terrific time to enjoy the lake life on Lake Cumberland. Chad explains why he loves Lake Cumberland. Courtney's favorite activity is just floating at the dam. Andrew talks about watching the sunset around 8PM on the water. It's a great way to finish the day. Molley asks the couple what they'd do, if they didn't have the lake life. Courtney knows they'd be on the water somewhere. They are really centered around the water. She and Andrew are starting a new company, Aqua Supply Co. They'll offer detail products, boating products, apparel and lots of boat-related items. The group talks about a houseboat poker run that used to take place on the lake. Scooter is a lake veteran and has been around for years. The year Scooter's team won the houseboat poker run, he was actually skiing behind it at the time. Scooter owns a Stardust houseboat. It's a terrific boat. Courtney asks Molley and Chad what kind of boat they'd buy if they won the lottery. Chad wants a big pontoon with a couple of 600s on the back. Molley would buy several boats. Her first choice would be a 38' Formula open bow. Andrew talks about how he and Courtney actually used to work a State Dock, at the same time, years ago. He actually knew her parents before he met her. Andrew worked as a houseboat captain and Courtney was the radio operator for the dock. She always remembered his sunglasses. Interestingly, Andrew helped with Top Chef, season 16, episode 8, called Whatever Floats Your Boat, including the captains from Below Deck. Molley asks if they had any advice for a new boater or someone considering buying a boat. Andrew quickly answers, “Start!” Just make the decision to do it. It's about having fun. Courtney comments how people at the dock will be more than willing to help you learn and figure things out. We'd like to thank our friends for helping to make this episode possible. Be sure to check out Part 1 and be sure to come back for Episode 22 (in 2 weeks) for more of our interviews during the Lake Cumberland State Dock Dock Crawl 2022. That's a wrap for this episode. We hope you found it helpful, insightful and maybe a little entertaining. Thanks for Listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider sharing it with your social media friends. We hope to see you out there soon. Until next time, here's to warm weather and calm waters! Don't forget to subscribe!
Episode 15: In this episode, Molley and Chad talk with their friends Mandy and Travis. These friends have “the dock life” figured out. They are basically live on their boat full-time. Today's discussion will focus on what it's like to practically live on a boat and some tips they can offer to people considering doing the same. What Started the Dock Life for Mandy and Travis? Mandy explains that they started coming to Lake Cumberland about 15 years ago. She worked with a lady who had houseboat at State Dock. After a weekend event, Mandy took Travis back and they began spending a lot of time there. They eventually bought their first boat, a Chaparral. Mandy and Travis were convinced that they wanted to buy a houseboat. A few years ago, they decided to buy a cruiser Travis found for sale at the dock. It took Travis a little time to convince Mandy to go this way, but the setup and amenities at their State Dock slip made the decision easier. When Did They Start Boating? Travis explains that his dad had a boat and he grew up boating on the river. When he met Mandy, they started going to Nolin. They quickly knew they liked the lake life. Even after they bought their boat, they still continued staying with their friends on the houseboat. Every Friday turned into a race to get back to the lake. In previous episodes, Molley and Chad recommended picking a job to do. Travis chose to drive the truck and Mandy got used to launching the boat off the trailer. Mandy quickly became very good at handling the launch and getting it back onto the trailer. Molley recounts how her family had ski boats when she was growing up. She and Chad bought a tri-toon, as their first boat. Molley comments how difficult it was to get used to getting it back onto the trailer. The first time she loaded it was a disaster. Luckily, she got better with practice. Mandy, Travis and their Cruiser Their cruiser is a 34' Sea Ray. It's sleeps 6 downstairs, with 2 more up top, if the canopy is up. The dock is full of boats and boat owners. It's a second family. They enjoy it when they can spend time by themselves, before the crowd returns for the weekend. Chad enjoys the early season because a lot of people aren't coming down yet. The water's cold, but there's less of a crowd. It can be very relaxing. Typically, Mandy and Travis are weekend warriors, when it comes to boating. They tie up every Saturday, but they return to the dock at the end of the day or evening. Mandy comments how the dock can be its own little city. Why Did They Decide to Keep the Boat at Lake Cumberland? For Mandy, it's because the lake is so beautiful and full of new places to explore. At the same time, the people down there have become like family. It's their happy place. Travis really enjoys early mornings on the lake. It's such a big lake that there's always something to do. He mentions the night trips to the dam are always fun. Molley describes how they like to launch the boat later in the day, when the full moon is out. It's a different experience when the moon lights up the lake. Other Lakes Offer Different Experiences Mandy lists a few of the other lakes they've visited including Nolin, Rough River, Lake of the Ozarks. She mentions that Lake of the Ozarks isn't really a tie-up place. It's more about the local bars. They've also visited Kentucky Lake. None of them felt like are “home.” Pitfalls to the Dock Life Molley asks Mandy and Travis about some of the downsides living on a houseboat or fully embracing the Dock Life. What should people consider. Travis jokingly comments that if you like to go to sleep early, consider which slip to buy because the people around the dock tend to be very social, especially on the weekends. Chad talks about how some slips can be seriously customized for a good time. Mandy explains there is a curfew for the music. However, if you're not a people-person, the Dock Life may not be for you. Chad recalls how people tend to pitch in to help others out, especially when they're docking boats or getting things ready. It's about “family.” If They Won the Lottery, What Boat Would They Buy? Couples usually have 2 different answers. Mandy says it would be houseboat and a Sunsation or Nor-Tech center-console to go with it. Travis says he'd buy a 50' Sea Ray with a closed cockpit. Chad and Molley recommend visiting the Miami Boat Show, if you'd like to dream. Chad describes the trend of converting tugboats to upscale, live-abort boats. What's the Best Thing about the Dock Life? For Travis, it's all about the people, combined with the chance to get away from reality and the stress. The dock is its own community. Mandy agrees, but also talks about the memories. The lake is just a terrific place, regardless of the boat you may have. Chad explains how he and Molley love just being out on the water. There's plenty of sights to see, like waterfalls. Winter Planning for Summer Activities Molley talks about how people like to start planning for the summer, as a way to help get through the winter months. They try to take a January trip somewhere warm just to get the feeling back. The group discusses how the have to transition between their winter and summer friends. Catching back up with their summer friends is always fun. Everyone is looking forward to returning to a normal summer, after the pandemic last year. Final Thoughts about the Dock Life Experience Travis explains how he helps to transport the bags and luggage to the boat. Having a good routine makes things much easier. He comments that being together on the lake has actually brought them closer, as a couple. Mandy comments about the advice she received from someone named Poppy. “You can always make more money, but you can't make more memories.” The couple recently sold their houseboat, so Mandy really considers these words to live by. We'd like to thank Mandy and Travis joining us for this episode. It was a great episode. Maybe they'll plan a dock-side episode, in the future.

Captain Ryan and I met a few years ago on a sailing trip on S/V Libra from Pensacola to the Miami Boat Show. It was an awesome trip. The Ballyhoop Booth 337 Sportfishing Pavilion Last fall I started seeing the Ballyhoop all over Instagram and the You Tube. Genius idea to make a collapsible hoop net and market it to the recreational fisherman that has never seen or heard of a hoop net. I purchased a Ballyhoop earlier in winter. I did have a problem with the net when it arrived, my wife emailed them a photo and they quickly called her back and they had new net delivered within a day or so. The customer service is awesome. They have a booth at Miami Boat Show this year so I would highly recommend you stop by and check out the Ballyhoop. If you are on the fence about purchasing one, just buy one, they work. Hoop nets have been around for ever. They were a well kept secret by the charter fleet for many years. I bought my first one from a local guy in down here years ago. In this weeks podcast I review the Caddycan. Concealing and securing trash on my boat can be a pain as space is limited. A friend of mine gave me a Caddycan to try out that he picked up as swag from the Miami Boat Show a year or so ago. I put the Caddycan through hell and back for over a year. Is is really worth the purchase? Check out my brutally honest review of the Caddycan in this weeks podcast. Below is the description the Caddycan as published in the Florida Keys Free Press Article on September 26, 2019, it was written by Kevin Wadlow. The Caddycan is a flexible lightweight and weathertight container with a 3.2 gallon capacity. The zippered top has a self-closing opening that allows easy disposable of cans, water bottles or fishing line. The Caddycan keeps the trash out of site and safely away from the water. Features include a heavy 600-denier polyester fabric exterior and a quick clean vinyl liner. An interior compression coil that helps the Caddycan keep its 13-by 13.5-14 inch shape. Adjustable Velcro straps and plastic strips allow it to be quickly attached just about anywhere on the boat. Even if the Caddycan goes overboard, interior floatation device will keep it afloat for retrieval.
Back in February at the 2018 Miami Boat Show, new recruit (at the time) to The International Seakeepers Society, Tony Gilbert broke down exactly what they do and why they do it. It's so true, often hunters are the biggest advocates for protecting the natural environment and the same can be said for boaters. Making sure we protect our oceans is something the industry takes great strides to do and Seakeepers is leading the charge. Check out the great work they are doing over on their website https://www.seakeepers.org/

Wanda Kenton Smith has worked in the boating industry since 1980. A journalist, she launched her career as editor of Water Ski and Windsurf magazines, and later worked as editor on additional trade titles in both the sailing and watersports sectors. She also has served as the marketing columnist for Soundings Trade Only since 1998, a post she still holds today. Wanda previously served as vice president of marketing for Regal Boats for 11 years prior to launching her own award-winning, full service advertising and PR firm for 13 years that serviced more than 35 global and national marine accounts. Today, Wanda serves as chief marketing officer of Freedom Boat Club, continues to consult on select accounts, speaks at industry events and is active in several marine industry initiatives. She is president of Kenton Smith Marketing, president of Marine Marketers of America and chairperson of the RBLC’s New Market Task Force. She also is the event producer and publicist of Boaterz n Bikerz of America: Hull of a Tour. On her first boating experiences.....When I was in middle school, my oldest brother purchased and refurbished a 19’ wooden sailboat and my family and I spent a lot of time on that sailboat on the river and local waterways. He had boated when he was younger and had always wanted to have access to a boat. I was obviously the fortunate one to enjoy the benefits of that. My brother and my dad taught me to sail when I was younger but I took a Coast Guard class years later when I was working at Regal Marine and I never looked back. That was a turning point. On boating in her adult life.....We have owned five boats in my adult life. We had two Regals, a bowrider and a deckboat. My favorite boat that I have ever owned was the very first Super Air Nautique, when the whole wakeboard industry started. We were the kings of the lake and the envy of all of my daughter’s friends. We took them boating and wakeboarding every chance that they got. We also had a Hunter sailboat and a Scout dual console. I now have access to over 500 boats through the SW Florida Freedom Boat Clubs. On her current boating lifestyle.....Now we like to get out and cruise. Go to waterfront restaurants. We really like going picnicking, finding sandy beaches and trying different locations. On favorite boating destinations.....Two locations come to mind. The first is Italy. I had the opportunity to go boating in Portofino and Lake Como. It was absolutely spectacular. The second place is the Bahamas. Totally love that turquoise blue water and be able to snorkel and see all that fabulous sea life. On starting in the industry.....I just got lucky. I was working in Miami and we had moved to Orlando and a friend of mine knew a guy who was advertising for an editor for Water Ski Magazine. I jumped all over it. Terry Snow was the publisher of the magazine and he took a chance on somebody pretty green and helped me launch my career. I went on from Water Ski to launch Windsurf magazine and then to edit Waterski Business, and then got into the agency side of my business. On championing women in boating.....It was late in the 1980s and I was working for Regal Boats in charge of marketing Part of my assignment was to do competitive research. I went down to the Miami Boat Show to go and visit 25 different booths and to get information on products. I walked away with some interesting insight. First of all, nobody asked if I need any help. Sales guys wouldn’t give me the time of day. From a marketing research perspective that was fantastic. It struck me that no one at any of the booths took me seriously as a buyer. I started a conversation about it in the trade press and wrote a column about it. I went on to launch a training firm that I called Marine Marketing for Women. All told, I had the opportunity to personally train over 4,000 people! I feel like it was an important step in educating the industry about the buying power and the influence that women have in the industry. On Freedom Boating Divas.....We launched Freedom Boating Divas for female members of the club. Our goal with the program is to make our female members feel more safe and competent at the helm and to provide opportunities to meet other women who share the same passion for boating. Here in Southwest Florida, we offer free unlimited training classes exclusively for the ladies that we schedule twice a month in different locations. The second part of that is the social part. By hosting social events exclusively for the divas they have the opportunity to meet with and mingle with other women who share the same boating DNA and passion. On engaging new markets.....The RBLC was organized several years ago with the primary purpose of growing the boating industry. I chair the new markets task force. We had a VIP influencers group that represent different ethnicities and our task force addresses opportunities to engage new and diverse audiences to boating. Ultimately, our goal is to promote engagement. We are focused on three markets – all affluent Hispanic, Asian, and African-American markets. We produced an award-winning educational module that includes latest demographic and economic trends and the highlight is five outstanding case studies with best practices from boating companies who are successfully engaging and selling to these markets. All of the information and the webinar is available for free from download at the RBLC.org website. On Boaterz n Bikerz of America: Hull of a Tour..... It originated from a conversation between myself and Jim Krueger. We were chatting one day during a ride and we talked about our bucket list and we both agreed that our number one bucket list trip would be doing a cross country ride from FL to CA. We planned it and thought it would be fun to mix in some boating activities and decided to invite others in the industry and our friends who also love boating and biking. On the connection between boaters and bikers.....It’s a fact. I was at the National Sailing conference a few weeks ago and Bonnier shared some statistics – 18% of people who sail are also active motorcycle enthusiasts. There’s such a definite lifestyle crossover. Those of us who like to motorcycle and like to boat like that sense of freedom, that sense of adventure and escape that those lifestyle sports deliver. On past tours.....It was 3,000 miles. We went from Destin, FL to San Diego. We rode the flatlands, through the scorching dessert mountains, we stopped at the Grand Canyon, plenty of spectacular coastlines, we experienced extreme heat, snow, rain, hail, thunder. It was amazing. We started at Legendary Marine at the yacht club, we had a sunset cruise in Texas aboard a 90’ party boat. And then we had a 2 ½ hour splash down in San Diego Bay aboard a brand new Beneteau poweryacht and sailboat. Our second Tour was the Freedom Ride. It went from Florida to Washington DC. We folded into the million bike extravaganza called Rolling Thunder that’s held Memorial Day in DC and it pays tribute to MIAs and POWs. We got to ride all the way down to the national Mall with veterans. It was a very touching and moving experience for all of us. We stopped at 5 different freedom boat clubs en route. In Annapolis we had an opportunity to board 7 different boats and watch a command performance of the Blue Angels. We had the Pacific Coast Rush. We shipped our bikes to Seattle and we rode down to San Francisco and took a loop out to Big Sur. We launched it at Alexander Marine with Regal Boats and did a launch party on a 78’ Ocean Alexander Yacht. Our splashdown was in San Francisco. We did a sunset sail aboard a large sailing Catamaran. The trip took us through the Glacier National Park. We cruised all the way down Pacific Coast Highway. We rode through the giant redwoods, literally through the trees. And we loved the twisting mountain ride of Big Sur and Monterey. It’s just moments that you’ll never forget, absolutely phenomenal. On the 2017 Lobster Roll.....The event is July 15th-22nd. We’re starting in Portland and ride the Maine coast to Canada. We twist through the white mountains in New Hampshire. We make a stop at Cape Cod and then we splashdown in Newport, RI. For those of us who are bikers, we don’t like the typical tourist traps. We’re staying in some quaint small towns. We’re going to go whale watching, we’ll be tubing, lots of fun things getting off the beaten path. On the importance of sponsors.....Freedom Boat Club is back as our title sponsor. Regal Boats is our boating sponsor. Soundings Trade Only is our media sponsor and I will be writing a blog which will be appearing every day of the tour. Sea Tow is sponsoring our chase vehicle so if we have any breakdowns they come and get us. BRP Evinrude is our power sponsor. Moose Landing is going to be hosting our launch party and two Freedom Boat Clubs are going to be participating with boat rides and Kenton Smith Marketing handles the publicity. On how to participate.....You have to have a motorcycle license and we do require group riding experience but there is no cost to participate. I have a hotel planner with our discounted group rates. If anyone is interested about getting more information they can email me at wanda@kentonsmithmarketing.com or visit www.kentonsmithmarketing.com On advice for getting into the industry.....It makes sense to talk to people in the industry. There is a lot of opportunity right now for technicians and people working on the service side. Find people who are willing to talk to you about what they do and what they enjoy most. If you’re a passionate boater and you love the water and want to be part of a dynamic industry, this is a great place to drop anchor. We have great people and sell fantastic products and are selling fun. I can’t think of anything else that’s more fulfilling and rewarding than this!

In this episode, we talk about cruising the St. Petersburg Beach, Florida area. We also talk about the Everglades Challenge small sailboat and paddle adventure race and we cover our decision to buy a modern design anchor. Intro News We spent the weekend Truck Tenting at Daytona Bike Week motorcycle rally. See our Truck Tentin' video here. We visited with boating friends while at bike week, staying on their boat at a great Loggerhead marina nearby, and ate a great dinner at Caribbean Jack's restaurant next the the marina. We released the first video from trip to the Miami Boat Show, two more videos coming out soon. We bought a new anchor! Check out Mantus Anchors, they set quick! New boat cover, we bought the 24'-26' but it is a few inches short so you may want to go up to the next size depending on your boat. Cruising St. Petersburg, FL We anchored near Ft. Desoto Park, they have a great campground where you can pull your boat up near your site. We visited the start of the Everglades Challenge adventure sailing race. A 300 mile race to Key Largo in small boats. Video of Everglades Challenge race start. After the start of the race we sailed out Bunces Pass and went south the Anna Maria Island where we anchored off the beach and had lunch at the Sandbar restaurant.
