Rio Youers is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, and a writer I love to chat with about craft. His newest novel is No Second Chances, an action in a novel form much like his last novel Lola on Fire which we talked about in episode of 40 of this podcast. If you want Rio's origin story that is in that episode. No Second Chances and the last one Lola on Fire straight action and crime stories built entirely on the power and strength of the Rio Youers secret ingredient. Characters. This freaking Youers guy knows how to write characters with complications that we can still root for. In this episode we talk about Rio's gig adapting Owen and Stephen King's Sleeping Beauties, working with Joe Hill on a comic book project, developing this novel out of a failed Lola novel, writing action, researching California, and the importance of characters in this novel. Spoilers start at the 42-minute mark. At that point, we lift up the hood on No Second Chances for Rio's first spoiler-heavy conversation on No Second Chances. So make sure you read it first but there is plenty tips for writers! •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

No Second Chances: A Novel by Rio Youers From Rio Youers, the acclaimed author of Lola on Fire, comes a blistering high-octane thriller about desperate love, vengeance, and the precarious pursuit of fame. “A rip-roaring Hollywood noir that smashes the pedal to the metal and keeps it there. The best villain since Ian Fleming's James Bond novels . . . This one is hot.” –Stephen King Luke Kingsley's glory days are behind him. A star on the rise, his life and career imploded after his soul singer wife, Lisa Hayes, disappeared without a trace, silencing a very public and tumultuous marriage. Most people, especially an avenging PI, think Luke got away with murder. The last thing he expects is to be pulled back from the brink by a starstruck stranger. Wannabe actress Kitty Rae has chased her dreams all the way from Kentucky to Hollywood. Saving a washed-up actor's life wasn't one of them, but she believes in Luke—as much as she believes her own career is just one lucky break away. For now, she works for Johan Fly, a charismatic, wealthy, and seriously unbalanced drug dealer to the rich and famous. When Johan discovers that Kitty has been skimming the product, he vows to make her pay. As Luke steps up to help Kitty, he uncovers a web of violence and corruption, as well as a single, enticing clue about his wife's disappearance. Barreling across the Mojave Desert, Luke and Kitty set off to find the long-lost Lisa. But Johan, hungry for vengeance, is hot on their trail. There's no limit to what he will do to find them. And in a world where fortune favors the ruthless, there's also no limit to what Luke and Kitty will have to do to survive.

Tonight we’re chatting with Rio Youers, author of the new book Lola on Fire, which releases 2/16 from William Morrow. People have called the book a mix of Killing Eve, John Wick and Kill Bill. About the book:Brody Ellis is short on luck and even shorter on cash to buy the medication his sister Molly needs. Desperate, he robs a convenience store, but on the way out, he bumps into a young woman and loses his wallet. Just when he expects the cops to arrive, the phone rings. It’s Blair Mayo—the woman he bumped into—and she’s got the missing billfold. Brody will get it back, but only if he does her a favor: steal her late mother’s diamonds from her wicked stepmom. But when he gets to the house, he finds a gruesome crime scene—and a security camera. Brody knows he’s been framed. Back home, the terrified young man gets another call. The police won’t get the incriminating video footage, Blair says. Instead, her daddy, the notorious mobster Jimmy Latzo, will exact his own kind of revenge. Brody and Molly realize that they’ve become pawns in a mysterious game—one that involves a notorious enforcer named Lola Bear who brutally crossed paths with Jimmy Latzo twenty-six years before. . . a ghost from the past who is intimately connected to their lives. About the author:Rio Youers is the British Fantasy and Sunburst Award–nominated author of Westlake Soul and Halcyon. His 2017 thriller, The Forgotten Girl, was a finalist for the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel. He is the writer of Sleeping Beauties, a comic book series based on the bestselling novel by Stephen King and Owen King. Rio lives in Ontario, Canada with his wife and their two children.

Literary Loitering | Cultural Anarchy with Books and The Arts
Under normal circumstances (or what passes as normal around here), we’d take our rickety wagon of cultural anarchy and meander along until we found some oddity or weirdness that we could talk about, but at certain points in the time someone else kindly does the job for us. That’s right. It’s time for one of our favourite annual awards - The Bookseller’s Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title of the Year! But before we get into that there are a few items of note, like Isabella Rossellini’s bizarre “one woman” show that had her sporting novelty gorilla arms (which, contrary to the review we found, we thought sounded amazing), the winner of the Man Booker Prize, and the fact that copies of Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk by Mark Judge (who is a college friend of controversial supreme court judge Brett Kavanaugh), are suddenly very hard to get a hold of … We end the show with our thoughts on Halcyon by Rio Youers. And the gang countdown Brian's picks for the best fifteen horror novels of 2017, with Stephen Kozeniewski, Grady Hendrix, Victor Lavalle, Maurice Broaddus, Rio Youers, Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason, Josh Malerman, Christopher Golden, John Urbancik, Matt Hayward, Nate Southard, Jason Ridler, Ronald Malfi, Somer Canon, and Wesley Southard.
In this very special episode, special guests Tim Lebbon and Rio Youers join The Horror Show's Brian, Dave, and Mary, Three Guys With Beards' Christopher Golden and James A. Moore, and John Urbancik of Inkstains, for an intimate and hilarious discussion on success, friendship, patience, and professionalism.
Actor Matt Blazi joins Brian and Dave in studio for a remembrance and career retrospective of George Romero, and shares stories of his friendship with the great director and what it was like to go from fan to working with him on the set. Plus -- a remembrance of Dave Z, the Frank Darabont and AMC war heats up, the latest on the FRIDAY THE 13TH lawsuit, Christopher Teague closes Pendragon Press, the 2016 Shirley Jackson Award winners, the 2017 British Fantasy Award nominees, the latest on Bryan Smith and Trent Hagga's 68 KILL, Rio Youers' THE FORGOTTEN GIRL, and Kelli Owen brings back the Buttercup.
The critically acclaimed Rio Youers is the latest victim on Three Guys with beards! We talk movies, comics, Rio's novels and why his ego is far too large for his body. Burning question: Was he named after the song?
Brian and Dave discuss comic book writer Mark Waid's history of bullying and threatening fellow creators and fans. Plus, the Permuted Press dumpster fire flares up again, Cullen Bunn returns to prose, Rio Youers is lovely, LOVECRAFT COUNTRY is coming to television, and good news for New York City freelancers.
