“There's something in the atmosphere that makes everything seem exaggerated.”Talking About Powell & Pressburger's 1947 film Black Narcissus with our guest, screenwriter James HandelIn this episode of Movies We Like, screenwriter James Handel joins hosts Andy Nelson and Pete Wright to discuss Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's 1947 masterpiece Black Narcissus, along with Handel's fascinating career writing genre-bending films like The Last Horror Movie, The Hoarder, and his latest psychological dramedy The Trouble with Jessica. From Philosophy to FilmBefore diving into Black Narcissus, Handel shares candid insights about his journey from philosophy student to screenwriter, starting with an unproduced vampire script and eventually leading to successful collaborations with directors Julian Richards and Matt Winn. He discusses how his background in philosophy influences his approach to moral dilemmas and character psychology in his screenplays, particularly evident in The Trouble with Jessica's darkly comic exploration of ethics and human nature.A Masterpiece of Psychological DramaThe conversation then turns to Black Narcissus, examining how Powell and Pressburger crafted this visually stunning psychological drama about Anglican nuns attempting to establish a convent in the Himalayas. The group discusses the film's groundbreaking technical achievements, with Jack Cardiff's Oscar-winning Technicolor cinematography bringing the entirely studio-shot production to vivid life. They explore how the film masterfully depicts the psychological deterioration of the nuns as they struggle with repressed desires, loss of faith, and the overwhelming power of their environment, all while maintaining a remarkable balance between expressionism and restraint.Black Narcissus remains a masterclass in psychological storytelling and visual craftsmanship, demonstrating how thoughtful restraint and artistic innovation can create an unforgettable cinematic experience. We thoroughly enjoyed diving deep into this classic with James Handel, whose own work carries forward the tradition of examining complex moral questions through compelling drama.Film SundriesWatch our conversation on YouTube!Watch this on Apple or Amazon, or find other places at LetterboxdScript OptionsTheatrical trailerOriginal Material Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. What happens when a nation forgets its spiritual foundation? In this thought-provoking episode, we examine the undeniable Christian roots of America through the writings and declarations of our Founding Fathers themselves. Diving into 2 Thessalonians, we explore how Scripture provides discernment in an age of deception while challenging listeners to honestly assess their priorities. How much time do we devote to social media, entertainment, and trivialities compared to our spiritual growth? The answer reveals much about our values. The historical record speaks clearly: 93% of Constitutional Convention delegates identified as Christians, and their faith directly shaped our founding documents and principles. We unpack how the phrase "separation of church and state" has been dramatically misinterpreted from Jefferson's original meaning, which was never intended to remove God from public life but to prevent government establishment of a national denomination.Drawing compelling parallels between 1930s Europe and contemporary America, we examine how censorship, political correctness, and ideological intolerance threaten the foundations of liberty. John Adams' warning that "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people" takes on renewed significance as we witness the cultural consequences of abandoning our spiritual heritage. This episode serves as both historical correction and spiritual wake-up call. By reconnecting with America's true founding principles, we can better understand why faith and morality aren't optional extras but essential foundations for preserving freedom. Share this episode with someone struggling to understand America's spiritual roots or questioning why faith matters in public life.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

The skeptical side of the Roswell UFO crash of 1947 argues that the event was not an extraterrestrial spacecraft, but rather a combination of misidentified natural phenomena and a high-altitude balloon project called Project Mogul. According to skeptics, the debris found at the crash site was likely from a top-secret government program that involved monitoring Soviet nuclear tests by using high-altitude balloons carrying sensitive equipment. This program, known as Project Mogul, aimed to detect low-frequency sound waves created by Soviet atomic bomb detonations. The skeptics suggest that the unusual characteristics reported by witnesses, such as the metallic-like material and strange symbols, can be attributed to common objects found in classified government projects of that time period. They argue that the sightings of "alien bodies" were likely a result of misinterpretation or embellishment over time. Furthermore, the U.S. military initially stated that they had recovered a "flying disc" but quickly retracted the statement, claiming that it was a misidentification of a weather balloon. Skeptics argue that the reversal further supports the idea that the crash was related to Project Mogul and not an extraterrestrial event. In summary, skeptics of the Roswell UFO crash argue that it was a case of misidentification and confusion, with the debris and witness testimonies being explainable using conventional explanations related to classified government projects of that era.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

This week marks the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, or the "catastrophe" in Arabic. It refers both to the events starting in late 1947, when Zionist militias expelled over 700,000 Palestinians from their homes, and the ongoing destruction and occupation of their lands. Today, Palestinians continue to commemorate the Nakba by reclaiming their history, resisting the occupation, and calling for their right to return. We start today's show with a story about how the desperation of life in Gaza under the Israeli blockade is forcing Palestinians to leave by sea. Then, we'll learn more about the history of the Nakba and the role that foreign powers like Britain and the United States have played. Like this program? Please show us the love. On June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold was flying over Mount Rainier Washington when he observed a group of unusual flying objects that he could not identify. Sharing news of his sighting when he landed shortly afterward, Arnold's account soon made it into American newspapers, and even came to the attention of the United States government. In short, the era of the "Flying Saucer" had begun, giving rise to one of the most controverisal topics in recent history: unidentified flying objects. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Arnold's sighting, we are joined by author and historian Charles Lear, whose new book, The Flying Saucer Investigators, chronicles the history of the researchers who went in search of answers to this enduring mystery of the space age.
