From the prehistoric to the modern, the history of dentistry can be a bit painful. Starting crudely and moving up to the idea of "tooth worms" we slowly and painfully made progress in how we care for our teeth. Then in the 1800s we made amazing leaps in knowledge and treatment, and luckily with the help of novocaine.
Are school teeth-brushing lessons the answer to tackling tooth decay? Or should it be up to parents to teach kids good habits? Perhaps a mix of the two? John spoke to dentist Ciara Gallagher, from the British Dental Association Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this update on the Suboxone Tooth Decay Lawsuit, Stan Gipe describes a “big step” – a step that may not seem big to plaintiffs, but is significant to the team that's driving a mass tort against Suboxone's manufacturer. That step is a census so that the team – operating as a firm called Dolman Russo – vets each person it represents. The census asks claimants for information such as proof that they used Suboxone's sublingual film, now linked to tooth decay. The team will also start asking claimants to sign release forms so the defense can secure their medical information.A member of the Dolman Russo steering committee, Stan explains to colleague and host Matt Dolman: “I think we've been more aggressive and more proactive about getting records for our clients than just about any other firm out there. It's going to force everyone to be proactive. It's going to force everyone to go out there and get those records.”The team is also reviewing electronically stored information for evidence of what the manufacturer, Indivior, knew or should have known about Suboxone's dangers.Want to learn more about the Suboxone Tooth Decay Lawsuit? Sugar on its own cannot cause tooth decay. This podcast challenges the idea that sugar is the only cause of tooth decay. It offers ways to halt and even reverse cavities, with methods you can use at home. You eat sugary or starchy foods. Bacteria in your mouth feed on these, releasing acids as a byproduct. The acid attacks your tooth enamel, which is made of minerals like calcium and phosphate. This weakens the enamel. Ideally, saliva washes away food particles and neutralizes the acid. Minerals from your saliva and food can then rebuild (remineralize) the enamel. However, if the acid attack is too frequent or intense, demineralization wins, leading to cavities. Here's where the holistic approach comes in... www.evolvedental.com.au www.holisticdentistry.au
Apologies for the radio silence - besides licking my financial wounds and feeling like an absolute prat for getting my election prediction SO HORRIBLY WRONG it has been hard to find the time and energy to get behind the mic. Hey, at least I'm not that Ann Seltzer lady. This episode also sounds like shit cause I recorded in a large room and did an AI edit. Damnit, you'll get what you get until law exams are done! This episiode we are having a good look at the plans of RFK Jr. who you all know is going to Make America Healthy Again. Well, is he? It's gonna be interesting. My inner cooker is fascinated to see how this goes, but as per usual the very positive things like removing toxic dyes from American food are completely counterbalanced by the fact that the person who plans to do it is a complete idiot. Law school ends this week. The future is bright! Plan some road trips, listeners, cause you're getting content for Christmas! Much love and I hope you enjoy!

Can hydroxyapatite toothpaste reduce your risk of tooth decay and strengthen your teeth? Recent studies have stated that 'Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is as good if not better than fluoride at protecting your teeth and none of the potential nasty side effects or toxicity'. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a type of calcium that makes up 97% of your tooth enamel and 70% of the dentin (the inner part) in teeth. Hydroxyapatite helps strengthen tooth enamel and protect teeth from decay. Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to fluoride-based toothpaste. Toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite can create a barrier on your tooth surfaces. This barrier protects teeth against the sugars and acids that wear away at your teeth. Dr Rachel Hall Brisbane holistic dentist explains about hydroxyapatite and how to reduce your risk for tooth decay/cavities. www.evolvedental.com.au www.holisticdentistry.au

Your dental health and your overall health are linked - this is called the mouth-body connection. Infections and inflammation in your teeth and gums spread via the bloodstream causing infection, inflammation and health complications elsewhere. If your gums bleed when you brush for example this means bacteria from your mouth are able to break into the rest of your body, invading and damaging your systemic health bu creating chronic inflammation. Someone who is recovering from drug addiction is trying to get back on their feet. But what if the medication that is supposed to help is causing problems? In this episode of David v. Goliath, hosts Matt Dolman and Stan Gipe discuss the newest emerging mass tort relating to the use of Suboxone, a medication commonly prescribed to individuals with opioid addiction to help them get off of opiates. Recent findings show that the sublingual film version of Suboxone is acidic and causes the degradation of the protective outer layer of teeth and tooth enamel. This can have a cataclysmic effect on people's lives, and even impact their ability to find employment. There's currently a group of about 40 lawsuits in different districts throughout the United States that are likely to be consolidated over the next few weeks into multidistrict litigation (MDL). The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) meets on January 25th and a steering committee will be selected by late February. In the meantime, anyone who has experienced dental problems while taking Suboxone before 2022, may be able to recover compensation and should contact a reputable attorney. In a quirky blend of sports, public health, and self-promotion, boxing legend Muhammad Ali took on an unusual opponent at the Washington Monument on 3rd November, 1979: ‘Mr. Tooth Decay'. The demonstration, promoted by Don King, culminated with Ali knocking down Decay in the sixth round, prompting the crowd of children to celebrate by tossing toothbrushes. It was part of an extended dental health campaign that included Ali's bizarre LP, "Muhammad Ali and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay," featuring Frank Sinatra and released in 1976. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca, and Olly dare each other to listen to the album in full; consider how Ali transitioned his public personality away from his stand against the Vietnam War and embrace of Islam; and seek out the even lesser-known sequel, "Dope! The Dope King's Last Stand", featuring a guest appearance from no less than President Jimmy Carter… Further Reading: • ‘Ali Still The Most in 6 Rounds With Tooth Decay' (The Washington Post, 1979): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1979/11/04/ali-still-the-most-in-6-rounds-with-tooth-decay/9700895a-6014-4a38-b2f4-5dfe2ff1cf3f/ • ‘Remembering Muhammad Ali's Trippy, Anti-Cavity Kids' Record' (Rolling Stone, 2016): https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/remembering-muhammad-alis-trippy-anti-cavity-kids-record-64027/ • ‘Ali and His Gang Fight Mr. Tooth Decay' (St. John's Fruit And Vegetable Co, 1976): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtiNbm9o8zU Fri: We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

Welcome to the July Q&A episode with Cynthia & Trisha. Today, we kick off the conversation with a story of an OB commenting on the "tightness" of a woman's perineum. Next, we jump into our questions on when sutures are or are not needed after a tear; placenta previa and a prolapsed cord; the risk of infection after rupture of membranes when GBS negative; how to get oxytocin flowing when your spouse is not present at birth; are there risks in pregnancy and postpartum if you have Irish twins; could I have birthed my frank breech baby vaginally even though the hospital said I could not, followed by Trisha's story of her one and only breech birth experience as a midwife. In the extended Q&A, we discuss the difficult decision one mother faces when the only available midwives don't align with her birth choices; a woman whose toddler developed significant tooth decay and questions teething oil over breast milk as the culprit; another mother who is told her baby is not gaining weight well because her breastmilk has an insufficient amount of calories, and a woman who is struggling with appetite due to her stress and anxiety and worries how it will impact her pregnancy. Finally, we close with a round of quickies including Cynthia's and Trisha's biggest pet peeves in life. **********Down to Birth is sponsored by:Needed -- Optimal nutritional products to nourish yourself before, during, and after pregnancy DrinkLMNT -- Purchase LMNT today and receive a free sample kit. Today, we're talking about cavities – the #1 preventable childhood disease affecting 90% of adults aged 20 and older. Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce acids that attack the teeth and cause demineralization. But the good news is that cavities can be prevented with proper oral hygiene and reduced intake of sugary foods and drinks. And if caught early, cavities can even be reversed or arrested through fluoride treatments or other remineralization techniques. Join us as we delve into the causes and prevention of cavities, and learn how to keep your teeth healthy and strong. Regular visits to the dentist are also an important part of cavity prevention. Your dentist can check your teeth for signs of cavities and recommend treatments if needed. They can also provide professional cleanings, which help remove plaque from hard-to-reach areas that you may miss with brushing and flossing alone. Learn more about the cause of cavities and how you can help prevent them. To explain how to stop cavities that have already started to develop, we can turn to Westin A. Price, a well-known dentist of the 20th century. Key Takeaways:-The destruction of hard tissues in the teeth, including enamel and dentin, can lead to a common oral health problem.-Good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly and reducing sugar intake, can help prevent this type of oral health issue.-Early detection and treatment of cavities are important to prevent them from progressing and causing more serious dental problems.-In some cases, cavities can be reversed or arrested in their early stages through fluoride treatments or other remineralization techniques.-A cavity is caused by a bacteria—streptococcus mutans—present in your mouth at all times.-Decayed enamel can't be “Re-Grown”
