Mike Brown hosts this JEMS Podcast Save a Life Day special during EMS Week 2026, joined by Chief Rom Duckworth and Dr. Shira Schlesinger. We celebrate EMS professionals and focus on two lifesaving interventions: bystander CPR and bleeding control. Topics include barriers to community CPR, Sidewalk CPR Week and practical, low-cost ways to increase engagement. They discuss Stop the Bleed realities: tourniquet over application concerns, the need for tourniquet correction and conversion by trained prehospital clinicians, and strategies to co locate tourniquets with AEDs.
In an emergency situation would you know what to do if someone was bleeding? An upcoming educational event at the UK Gatton Student Center will provide answers in a fun and easy to understand way. Dr. Greg speaks with Amy Lambert, Critical Care, Safe Kids Fayette County, who'll be part of 'Stop The Bleed,' where attendees can learn techniques to stop bleeding in emergency situations to sustain a life until medical support can arrive.
In this month's episode of the Theatre, we are excited to be announcing "Stop the Bleed", our ambitious and radical new programme, training the general public to stop traumatic blood haemorrhage. This includes stab wounds from knife crime, cut, and fall wounds and affects every region in the UK. Another key part of "Stop The Bleed" is to provide life-saving kit in spaces such as pubs, farms, public transport and other areas particularly vulnerable to these injuries. In these situations, survival can be decided in a matter of minutes, and having a trained population with access to proper kits can play a crucial role in reducing the mortality rate. The programme will be launched at the Future of Surgery Festival, on 20-21st April 2026. To introduce it, our host Kenny Webster is joined by leading trauma consultants Guy Slater, Wendy Gaskin, Elena Theophilidou and Martin Griffiths, who all share their experience on how Stop the Bleed can save lives in their field and across the UK. "Stop the Bleed" is made possible thanks to its sponsors: the Drexler Foundation, the Grace Trust and the Addint Charitable Trust. We are especially keen to hear from people interested in providing "Stop the Bleed" training. If this could be you, please contact us at education@rcseng.ac.uk. If you would like to find a training centre near you, please feel free to contact this email address too. Send a textA story can be false and still feel true when it hits your emotions first. I talk through a rapid set of breaking events, starting with the Gracie Mansion arrests where homemade explosive devices and TATP residue point to a real terrorism threat even though one device did not detonate. The bigger issue is how fast the narrative hardens when early labels like “suspicious device” or a tone-deaf headline soften what actually happened. If you care about situational awareness, this is a reminder to verify early and stay flexible as facts change. From there, the conversation shifts to practical preparedness you can act on today. With multiple same-day incidents under terrorism investigation, I explain why “Run, Hide, Fight” and Stop The Bleed training are not internet hype but real-world life-saving skills. We get concrete about first aid preparedness: tourniquets, wound packing, and why being ready to treat bleeding matters just as much as staying alert.I also touch on energy insecurity and how geopolitical risk near the Strait of Hormuz can spike oil prices and raise gas costs even when the United States produces most of what it uses. The goal is not panic, it's planning: keep your tank topped off when you can and build small buffers that reduce stress when headlines turn. The final takeaway is digital resilience. Misinformation and disinformation can drain your focus until you are “chasing shadows,” so I share why I'm stepping back from social media and how protecting your time is part of preparedness. If this helped you think clearer, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review so more people can prep with common sense.https://augasonfarms.com?sca_ref=9315862.VpHzogdDNuAugason FarmsSupport the podcast. Nick Kartsioukas joined us to talk about security in embedded systems. Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) is the primary database to check your software libraries, tools, and OSs: cve.org. Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP, owasp.org) has information on how to improve security in all kinds of applications, including embedded application security. There are also cheatsheets, Nick particularly recommends Software Supply Chain Security - OWASP Cheat Sheet. Wait, what is supply chain security? Nick suggested a nice article on github.com: it is about your code and tools including firmware update, a common weak point in embedded device security. Want to try out some security work? There are capture the flag (CTF) challenges including the Microcorruption CTF (microcorruption.com) which is embedded security related. We also talked about the SANS Holiday Hack Challenge (also see Prior SANS Holiday Hack Challenges). This episode is brought to you by RunSafe Security. Working with C or C++ in your embedded projects? RunSafe Security helps you build safer, more resilient devices with build-time SBOM generation, vulnerability identification, and patented code hardening. Dransfield and Dr. Rayburn share the journey of New Orleans EMS in implementing the program, including their logistics, lessons learned and the vital impact of their interventions on patient outcomes. The episode emphasizes the collaboration between EMS and trauma centers as well as blood suppliers to reduce mortality rates, while also tackling key questions, such as the supply chain, funding and future research. Memorable quotes "For every minute we delay blood administration, there's an 11% increase in mortality – this isn't just a theory; it's life and death." — Dr. David Rayburn "We were topping the charts in the wrong categories – violence and stuff like that. So, our medics were frustrated with the old scoop and run. We're not just scooping and running anymore. We're providing definitive care." — Tom Dransfield "We're seeing no change in temperature for patients receiving two units of cold PRBCs in the pre-hospital environment, and that's groundbreaking." — Dr. David Rayburn "If we're doing blood, we're literally saving lives. But without reimbursement, it's an uphill battle." — Rob Lawrence "Our paramedics are pushing the envelope – it's no longer just about trauma; we're now treating GI bleeds, OB cases and renal patients with blood administration." — Dr. David Rayburn Find more episodes: https://www.ems1.com/ems-one-stop

Contributor: Ricky Dhaliwal, MD Educational Pearls: What can you do to control bleeding in a penetrating wound? Apply direct pinpoint pressure on the wound as well as proximal to the wound. Build a compression dressing. How do you build a compression dressing? Think about building an upside-down pyramid with the gauze. Consider coagulation agents such as an absorbent gelatin sponge material, microporous polysaccharide hemispheres, oxidized cellulose, fibrin sealants, topical thrombin, or tranexamic acid. What are the indications to use a tourniquet? The Stop The Bleed campaign recommends looking for the following features of “life-threatening” bleeding. Pulsatile bleeding. Blood is pooling on the ground. The overlying clothes are soaked. Bandages are ineffective. Partial or full amputation. And if the patient is in shock. How do you put on a tourniquet? If using a Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) tourniquet, apply it proximal to the wound, then rotate the plastic rod until the bleeding stops. Then secure the plastic rod with a clip and make sure the Velcro is in place. Mark the time - generally, there is a spot on the tourniquet to write. Have a plan for the next steps. Does the patient need emergent surgery? Do they need to be transfered? How long can you leave a tourniquet on? Less than 90 minutes. What are the risks? Nerve injury. Ischemia. In today's episode I speak with trauma surgeons Drs. Morad Hameed and Elliott Haut. With the announcement of President Biden's first-ever federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention, today's conversation is on point. We chat gun violence in the USA and Canada and discuss the Stop The Bleed campaign. Morad and Elliott speak on what they do to prevent burnout in themselves given that they are exposed to so much trauma themselves. The STOP THE BLEED® campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, The White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters. Morad Hameed is a trauma surgeon and intensivist at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed medical school and surgical residency at the University of Alberta, graduate studies in public health at Harvard University, and fellowships in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Miami. Elliott Haut MD PhD is the Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service, Department of Surgery, Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Editor in Chief at Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open.

Josh and Moose talk about the Stop the Bleed Campaign. We thought it important to speak on this extremely important topic during May because it is Stop the Bleed Month.
How convenient would a “cashless society” be? Just think, one Central Bank to control all digital currency. All you have to do is surrender your individual liberty and allow the state to decide what you are and are not allowed to purchase. Do you think you are going to buy guns and ammo with your CBDC? Think again. Is your grandpa's old gun showing signs of wear? Would you like to re-blue it? Duracoat has the product for you. As an added benefit, you can do it yourself. On November 14, 2019, my daughter's high school experienced a mass shooting. Children died. Don't think that "it cannot happen to you." Because of my family experience and the current culture crisis, I just went through training with "Stop the Bleed" to get certified and become an instructor. This is valuable training for how to manage large bleeds in an emergency trauma situation whether it be a mass shooting or car accident, etc. The training is FREE! You can watch the training video online and take the quiz for free--it takes about 25 minutes. If you want the actual certification, you need to take the hands-on course which takes about 60-90 minutes, and the in-person course is also FREE! If you don't have a trauma kit, they show you how to stop bleeds with a T-shirt, so why not go through free, concise, and such useful training? Who should do the training? Anyone that is old enough to understand it. In terms of youth and watching the online video, I think it would be helpful for some elementary students by 4th-5th grade if the parents are okay with the uncomfortable topic of trauma management. There is a national movement to put bleed kits at every AED station across the country--some schools and venues already have them in place. Stay ahead of the curve--prepare and get trained.*Training Link: https://www.stopthebleed.org/training

DTFF: The Volunteer Firefighter Podcast - Down To Fight Fire
E199 - Active Shooter Stop The Bleed, Keremeos Creek Wildfire Update This week we sat down and debriefed a Stop The Bleed session Todd and Scott put on, got an update on the Keremeous Creek Wildfire and were interrupted with a few calls and had to cut the Podcast short. Apologies to all our Shout Outs, we will make up for it next week! As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe.
