The Best of the Month episode is now Patreon-only. Public subscribers get the first 25 minutes or so.Episode 270 is partly a review of our favourite music of the month, and partly a chat about what's happening with Kendrick (new album) and Drake (lawsuits lol) in November.Andrea tells us why Drake is suing UMG, the label both him and Kendrick are on, and why he is also suing the label for defamation for things said in a rap beef with Lamar (you couldn't make it up) .Then we review Kendrick's new surprise album GNX, with its West Coast focus and hyphy vibe adding up to a victory lap for the rapper. After our recent deep dive into his seminal album, it's the return of Andrea's Cool Big Guy Father John Misty and his new album Mahashmashana who as we found out is on the same release schedule as K.Dot. Andrea reviews the album and we talk an endorsement from Cher? Then it's recommendation corner with music from Bolis Pupul, Ahmed, With Love., Oisin Leech, single men in their twenties and the Doechii & Tyler, The Creator performance at Camp Flog Gnaw.Show notes:Nialler9 on Patreon - event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes & join our Discord Songs played on the Nialler9 Podcast PlaylistListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Podlink Hosted on Acast. Held at the iconic Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, this year's festival not only celebrated a decade of innovation but also set new benchmarks for fan experiences in the music festival landscape.Festival Enhancements:Transportation: The collaboration with LA Metro for free shuttles from Union Station to the venue was a game-changer, providing smooth access despite some rail line hiccups, showcasing effective crowd management.Venue Layout: The festival featured three stages - Camp, Flog, and Gnaw - each designed to offer unique vibes and experiences. Enhanced with carnival rides and games, the layout was both functional and festive. VIP areas offered exclusive benefits, including quicker access to rides and prime stage viewing spots.Themed Food Options: Attendees savored culinary delights at spots like the MF DOOM-inspired MM..FOOD Diner and Pusha T's "Grindin" coffee stall. While the food was a hit, the addition of more seating could improve comfort for diners.Exclusive Merchandise: Camp Flog Gnaw didn't disappoint with its merchandise, offering everything from affordable tees to high-end $100 "Save The Bees" sweatshirts. The variety catered to all budgets while keeping the festival's unique aesthetic alive.Music Highlights:Tyler, The Creator: As the festival's curator and headliner, Tyler delivered a mix of new tracks from "Chromakopia" and classics, with special guest Sexyy Red for "Sticky," adding an extra layer of excitement.Standout Performances: Artists like Doechii and Sexyy Red made significant impressions, proving their mettle in the live environment. Erykah Badu's participation in the MF DOOM tribute was particularly poignant, enhancing the emotional depth with orchestral arrangements.Legacy Acts: Ma$e and Action Bronson brought different flavors to the festival. Ma$e with his solo hits and Bronson with his genre-blending set backed by a jazz band, showing the festival's commitment to diverse musical experiences.Genre Diversity: From André 3000's experimental jazz to Omar Apollo's soulful melodies, the lineup was a testament to Tyler's broad taste and influence, ensuring a broad appeal.Additional Insights:Audience Atmosphere: The crowd's diversity, from young fans to seasoned listeners, highlighted Tyler's impact across generations. The festival fostered a communal vibe, with fans sharing moments and memories.Unique Features: The integration of music with themed food, merchandise, and carnival games created a holistic festival experience, where strategic scheduling allowed attendees to catch multiple acts without missing out. Conclusion:Camp Flog Gnaw 2024, under the stewardship of Analytic Dreamz's analysis, stands out as not just a music festival but a cultural phenomenon. Gang is all back in town! After a long vacation filled with barefoot R&B synths and TMZ interviews, Rory is finally back at work. The team briefly catches up with him, before getting into a debate about the historic (snore, snore) fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson (6:12). They have some conversation regarding content creating and Netflix's next moves before finally addressing the fail that was Bill Burr's post-election monologue (29:33). When one journey begins, another one ends - J.Cole and his manager and lifelong friend are taking us on an audio journey through Cole's career (35:20), while the infamous Whoreible Decisions podcast has made an announcement that their show is coming to an end (47:46). Tyler The Creator's festival, Camp Flog Gnaw, was over the weekend, and the team discusses what festival fits their vibe the most (1:01:51). We also speak on Netflix not messing up a Beyonce Christmas due to low bandwidth, and its new live sport experience (1:07:29). Also discussed were the most overrated actors and standup comedians (Mal hates The Rock) (1:14:54). We have voicemails! The first one is from a guy who is bisexual and doesn't know how to tell his family (1:43:45), and the second is from a caller who Rory therapizes simply off the one question he asked about his mom and sister's family dynamic with him (1:56:30).For MORE Rory & Mal, make sure you subscribe to our Patreon community, for exclusive episodes, first access to tickets and merch sales, private live chats with the team, + more! https://www.patreon.com/newrorynmalFollow Rory: @ThisIsRoryFollow MAL: @MAL_ByTheWayFollow Julian: @Julian__nicholasFollow Demaris on YT: https://www.youtube.com/@DemarisG To watch the podcast on YouTube: https://bit.ly/NewRoryAndMALYouTube Don't forget to follow the podcast for free wherever you're listening or by using this link: https://bit.ly/NewRoryAndMAL Thanks to our sponsors: Go to https://SHOPIFY.COM/rorymal to upgrade your selling today. Scott says, “It might be the activity that brings someone in, but it's the community of sober friendships that keeps them coming back.” This spark of hope for recovery, that Scott himself experienced, has continued to grow and help thousands rise from addiction. Not limited to those in recovery, The Phoenix movement is for anyone who has been impacted by substance use disorder — because the solution to the addiction crisis lives in all of us. This is our movement! To learn more, or to connect with our community, volunteer, or donate, please go to thephoenix.org. The Phoenix is a national sober active community that provides free, active, and meaningful programming—ranging from yoga and rock climbing to CrossFit and art—to individuals impacted by substance use. The Phoenix fosters a welcoming and safe community where participants, with a minimum of 48 hours of sobriety, can heal and grow together. The organization has achieved remarkable results: 83% of members report sustained sobriety after three months of participation. In 2022, The Phoenix realized a gap in recovery support in the music industry despite the fact that addiction disproportionately affects the music industry – 56% of music industry professionals cite problematic substance use (Source: Tulane University School of Social Work 2022), so they partnered with Stand Together Music and Stand Together Foundation to launch 1 Million Strong—an impact initiative to support one million people impacted by substance use, starting in the music industry. Over the past year, 1MS has hosted sober-supportive retreats at over a dozen renowned music festivals, supporting hundreds of thousands of fans. Positioned strategically amid the festival's heart, these retreats offer a VIP-like experience with mocktails, The Phoenix programming (like guided meditations and yoga) and a supportive atmosphere to meet other likeminded people. The impact of these events are undeniable: Since the launch of 1MS in September 2022, The Phoenix has had nearly 140,000 new members join the community. We're not slowing down the tempo – 1 Million Strong will be hosting sober-supportive retreats at In Between Days, Park City Song Sumit, Bourbon & Beyond, Telluride Blues & Brews, Louder than Life, and Camp Flog Gnaw between now and the end of the year and planning for a festival-filled 2024! The Phoenix and 1 Million Strong are transforming how America approaches addiction, so those in recovery can go from surviving to truly living. Scott's personal story and work with The Phoenix and 1 Million Strong could offer your listeners a fresh perspective on the power of connection in overcoming addiction. thephoenix.org 1millionstrong.com The Phoenix - A Sober Community (app) HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. We discuss the tragic events that unfolded at the Astroworld Festival 11/5/21 & explain how an incident action plan works, the command post set up, the crowd grid & how the medical assignments work, the chain of command, the kill switch, & how this all has to work together to prevent these tragedies. We talk about how and why crowd crushes and surges happen, including ones that we've experienced as concert goers. We get a lesson on the history of music festivals and raves in LA, & discuss how we had to stop the show at our own rap festival, Camp Flog Gnaw, for 45 minutes during a Post Malone performance to stop the crowd surge. We talk about what could've gone wrong at Astroworld & how this can be prevented in the future, & who bears what responsibility. You also learn how people die in these situations and exactly what a human crush injury is & how it happens.
