Welcome back, friends! I am so glad you are joining me for today's conversation with preacher, speaker, author, and the head of global faith-based partnerships at Facebook, the amazing Nona Jones. We dive right into this one to chat about just how prevalent insecurity is in our culture and how important it is for us to recognize that toxic comparison is deadly.  Friends, you are not a failure because of someone else's successes.  Nona and I also speak candidly about how social media is often our number one trigger in feelings of comparison, insecurity, or being enough. However, the truth is that social media often just exposes our insecurity rather than is the source of our insecurity. She shares her experiences working in the social media industry and ministry and wrestling with insecurity. It provided the connection of experience for her to speak about this topic in the soon-to-release book, Killing Comparison. Be sure to listen in as we discuss practical ways to conquer daily comparison - to live confidently in who God made us to be. Nona is recognized as one of the world's foremost experts on digital discipleship through social technology, motivating thousands of church leaders each year to reimagine social media as a strategic tool for ministry. Nona's passion and purpose in life is to demonstrate God's power to turn pain into purpose, a calling she fulfills in her career and alongside her husband as co-leader of Open Door Ministries in Gainesville, Florida. She is the proud mother of two sons and a Goldendoodle named Shiloh. She has also written five books, and is an avid runner and fitness enthusiast, having recently run her 13th half-marathon in Paris, France.  Listen in to learn more about: How we spend so much time denying insecurity that we never get to the place of actually defeating it. Guarding our hearts by guarding our eyes + how this principle relates to the story of Saul, David, and Jonathan in the Bible. The importance of tracing our insecurity back to its roots so that we can begin to reclaim that ground and stop being triggered every time we see someone succeed. Favorite quotes: ~Insecurity is not about thinking lowly about yourself. Insecurity is really a question of what your identity is secured to. ~Social media more exposes our insecurity than is a source of our insecurity. Two people can view a post and one can walk away inspired while the other person can walk triggered. ~We spend so much time denying insecurity that we never get to the place of actually defeating it. ~There's something in our background, in our biography that has created an insecure foundation. ~Perfection isn't real and many of us are comparing our reality to someone else's fiction. In this episode I answered this question: What is the best advice to grow in a specific area? Nona Jones: Stories of triumph are inspiring, right? Nona Jones is one such story. Openly sharing her abusive childhood, her driven early adulthood and her transformation to an inspiring leader and head of faith-based partnerships at Facebook will give you both the inspiration and the pathway to what might be the start of your own healing journey. Nona is unapologetically bold and raw about her brokenness and also wise in the way she owns her unresourceful thinking and behaviour. Her journey through forgiveness to wholeness to ongoing disciplines that keep her healthy and effective is simply inspiring. The serendipitous moments of her life and career are incredible to listen to as her deep trust in a future that wasn’t yet clear helped her make bold choices that have paid off big time! Expect to hear a raw and honest account of how Nona suffered growing up, expect also to hear how she slowly came to realise what the critical steps to her own healing were and how her brokenness acted out in her professional life. Also expect to hear about a woman who has great faith, courageous conviction and infectious optimism about what’s possible when your life is lived from the inside out.   Nona Jones is a rare combination of preacher, author, business executive, entrepreneur, media personality and worship leader. In her day job she serves as the Head of Global Faith-Based Partnerships at Facebook where she leads the company’s work with faith-based organizations around the world. She is also CEO of eChurch Partners and is set to release her memoir, Success from the Inside Out, with Zondervan Publishers in 2020. Her memoir chronicles her unlikely story of success after a childhood filled with physical and sexual abuse between the ages of 5 and 11. Since being licensed into the gospel ministry at the age of 17, Nona has preached around the world. As a business executive and entrepreneur, she has been profiled by ESSENCE Magazine as an “Under 40 Woman to Watch” and Florida Trend Magazine as one of Florida’s “30-Something All Stars.” She has also been featured on TBN, CBN News and The Word Network. Join me tonight as I talk with Pastor Jeremy Charles as we discuss his faith walk, rise to ministry and what it means to be young, black, single and saved.  Jeremy’s passion for connecting people to God and community led to the founding of JCM (Jeremy Charles Ministries). His commitment to stewardship has been demonstrated in his work with both young and old by way of Successful Transition (a program for troubled youth) and Open Door Ministries (a homeless shelter for men). Jeremy has been evangelizing since 2012 whenever and wherever the opportunity presents. His outreach has ranged from local bible studies to guest speaking engagements and symposiums on leadership. He is a proud alumnus of NC A&T State University and the University of Miami where he obtained a BS degree in Marketing and a MS in Sports Management, respectively. He is currently the Pastor of One Place Church in High Point, NC .

Our special guest is Michelle Ferrigno Warren, author of The Power of Proximity: Moving Beyond Awareness to Action. Michelle is the advocacy and strategic engagement director for the Christian Community Development Association. She is an immigration, education, and human service policy specialist and is an adjunct faculty member at Denver Seminary. With over twenty years’ experience working in Christian community development, Michelle is a part of the national Evangelical Immigration Table and helps consult for the National Immigration Forum. She is a founding staff member of Open Door Ministries, a large community development corporation. We can see evidence of injustice all around us, whether in continuing incidents of racial inequality or in the systemic forces that disenfranchise people and perpetuate poverty. It's important to learn about the world's inequities and to be a voice for the voiceless any way we can. But in an age of hashtag and armchair activism, merely raising awareness about injustice is not enough. Michelle Warren knows what is needed. She and her family have chosen to live in communities where they are "proximate to the pain of the poor." This makes all the difference in facing and overcoming injustice. When we build relationships where we live, we discover the complexities of standing with the vulnerable and the commitment needed for long-term change. Proximity changes our perspective, compels our response, and keeps us committed to the journey of pursuing justice for all. Move beyond awareness and experience the power of proximity.
