When it comes to qualities like sacrifice, strength, and empathy, few groups exemplify them better than military veterans. These individuals, having faced the challenges of military life, possess a special set of traits that align remarkably well with the demands of ministry.    Moving from a life of duty in the armed forces to one focused on spiritual service might not seem like an obvious transition, but as we look closer, the connections become clear. The transformation of healthcare is a seemingly insurmountable challenge, yet overcoming any obstacle in the journey begins with the belief that it is possible to win!  It's not about the magnitude of the task; it is about the collective will to prioritize the wellbeing of every person we serve in our population.  Perhaps when approached with the audacity to imagine a healthier and more equitable future for all, we'll actually get there.  And that is just what the Physicians of Southwest Washington (PSW) is realizing as they navigate a successful transition from volume to value. Our guest on the Race to Value this week is Melanie Matthews, the dynamic, creative, and innovative CEO of PSW. She leads a population health company that has been around for three decades. Melanie is not only leading their ACO and managing their progression in the adoption of full-risk Medicare Advantage delegation; she has become a nationally recognized voice for value-based health policy.  In listening to this interview, you will hear from a leader that has a real personal capacity for leadership and a clear focus on excellence. If you want to hear from someone that is at the absolute forefront of risk-based contracting and innovation, who understands the issues at a granular level, this episode with Melanie is a must-listen! Episode Bookmarks: 01:30 Introduction to Melanie Matthews and the Physicians of Southwest Washington (PSW) 04:30 PSW has evolved over the last three decades from an IPA to a diverse business that includes a national leading ACO and risk-bearing entity for MA. 06:00 "PSW is a story of independent physicians who, in a time of market consolidation, want to remain independent and focus on the patient relationship." 06:45 Achieving success in delegated risk and taking accountability for both quality and total cost of care. 07:00 The impact of MACRA on the long-term value-based care strategy of PSW. 08:30 Building an infrastructure and developing capabilities to move a value-based agenda. 09:00 Developing a business model for agility in responding to new rules ("a kayak in a sea of cruise ships") and engaging all types of physicians in the landscape. 09:30 "The value-based movement is important as the fee-for-service chassis is not realistic, has poor quality and outcomes, and rising costs." 10:00 Taking risk with physician partners and providing them with MSO services, leveraging a technical infrastructure and population health platform. 10:45 The glacial pace of scaling payment model transformation at CMS and CMMI's bold goal for 2030. 12:00 The increasing shift to home-based care delivery and the use of generative AI in reshaping care delivery. 13:00 How the flawed economic design of the fee-for-service system creates industry inertia. 14:00 Diverting to the known (i.e. fee-for-service care delivery) in times of stress is an unsustainable path forward. 15:00 Convincing the Board room on the tenets of VBC when it hasn't historically delivered on its promises. 16:00 Trends in consumer cost-shifting and the challenges of private insurers cross-subsidizing provider losses from public payers. 16:30 Unsustainable economics in employer-based healthcare and the looming insolvency of Medicare. 17:00 What does the CMMI 2030 Goal mean for future of the value movement? 18:30 An overview of the extensive services offered by PSW that empowers success in VBC. 19:30 The explosive growth of strategic transactions of physician groups and how mass consolidation is impacting the landscape. 21:00 Aligned incentives and access to a population health platform as keys to VBC success. 22:00 PE investment impacts on competition in an independent physician ecosystem. 23:00 Generational differences in the approach to the business of practicing medicine. 23:30 "Organizations that are convened with independent physicians are able to show better costs of care." Dale Troy is a College Success Coach and Certified Health Coach, who helps students transition successfully from high school to college. Dale's experience in helping college students started with her own three daughters. All three of her daughters graduated from Yale College, and she is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School. Dale's College Success Formula program provides students with strategies that reduce their daily stress and enable them to thrive. Are you and your teen spending a lot of time talking about college admissions? Most families view high school as the gateway to college, and spend time, effort and resources to help their teens get into a good college. As a parent, you want your teen to have a great experience, and graduate in 4 years with a job that will support them. Unfortunately, many students find themselves stressed, overwhelmed, and lacking confidence in their first semester of college. As a College Success Coach, Dale Troy has identified the key habits and skills all students need to thrive in college. You can help your teen with the transition to college by learning what they need to know before they arrive on their campus. Key Takeaways It takes more than academic ability to succeed in college. There are 4 pillars of habits and skills that lead to college success (academic skills, social connections, physical health, emotional well-being). Time management is the key to college success because it's necessary to balance academics, social life, and self-care. Every student needs a planner, and a physical planner is best as they write down what they need to do it becomes more seated in their brain. It's normal for your teen to feel stressed, however it's important to know when they are overly stressed. When they feel stressed it's important to talk with them about self-care: sleep, nutrition, exercise…are they getting enough. Do they have a way to release stress such as meditation, deep breathing, walking in nature, music, creating. Students want to feel included, make friends, and not feel lonely. It's important for them to join a club, get involved in dorm activities, and talk with their parents about the choices they are making in choosing friends and activities, so they don't get misled. How often to reach out to your teen in their first year of college can differ depending on your family communication. Creating a plan of communication, how often to connect, will set an expectation to stay in touch. A once-a-week face-to-face call (facetime, zoom, etc.) will help you see how they're doing. Most freshman will be homesick, and this is normal. It can mean that they don't feel at home yet in their new environment. As they get more involved in activities and create healthy friendships, they will settle more into feeling at home at school. Rescuing your teen is not the answer, supporting your teen is. Let them figure out the answer to the problem. This is their time to work through challenges, build resilience, and strengthen self-confidence to go out in the world after college. Help your student know where they can go and who they can talk with to solve the challenges they need help with. We often hear about the soft side of planning. As Lisa Featherngill, CPA/PFS, shares in this episode of the PFP Section podcast, this is really the hard side of planning. In this episode of the PFP Section podcast, Bob Keebler, CPA/PFS, interviews Lisa to get her thoughts on how to have important conversations that lead to whether the quantitative side of planning will be successful or not. The stakes are high and it's important to guide clients to communicate in a way that gets underneath the numbers to the meaning of the wealth. Lisa and Bob discuss: What is the qualitative side of planning? What is the number one reason why families lose control of assets and family unity by the third generation? What can we do to encourage clients to have these conversations? Are there tools that can be used to make it more comfortable for advisors and clients? What gets in the way of having these important discussions and how can we overcome this? What does all of this have to do with AI? Starting a recruitment agency is hard. Being a great recruiter is no guarantee you'll be a successful business owner. There are thousands of competent, hard working recruiters who struggle when they go out on their own.   That's why my next guest, Mike Williams, is so remarkable. In his first 12 months, he billed $900,000. He's now up to $1,200,000 since he started the business 15 months ago.    Mike is the founder and President of Carnegie Partners, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He's a manufacturing and engineering recruitment specialist. I'm honored to count Mike among our clients here at Recruitment Coach.   You'll enjoy hearing Mike's journey because he reveals some of the secrets to his success while being honest about the moments of self-doubt that we can all relate to.   One of the things Mike has mastered is creating original content on LinkedIn as a key part of his business development strategy. In this interview, Mike shares how to generate content ideas and posts consistently on LinkedIn. Plus we discuss the importance of posting videos to engage with your target audience.    Mike has an impressive track record as a top producer. In his first 5 years in agency recruitment, he won "Perm Rookie of the Year" plus President's Club 5 years in a row. He then founded Carnegie Search in February 2022.    Episode Outline and Highlights   [01:15] How Mike got into recruiting and started his own business. [06:30] Why recruitment leaders must create a defined career path for their team members. [08:35] Mike's thoughts on how to retain your top recruiters. [11:37] From top recruiter to successful recruitment entrepreneur: two key success factors in hitting the ground running.  [16:06] Building relationships by meeting clients in person and visiting manufacturing companies. [25:22] How digital marketing, social media, and LinkedIn played a critical role in Mike's success. [28:33] Mike shares his LinkedIn strategy - how it helped him win business and the barriers he had to overcome. [35:35] How to overcome fear when posting content online. [41:24] How to generate ideas and create content consistently. [49:05] Why you should consider posting videos on Linkedin. [51:18] Mike revealed the roadblocks he encountered and his big learnings to date.   Hitting the Ground Running - Making a Successful Transition from a Recruiter to a Recruitment Business Owner   How was Mike able to hit the ground running so fast in his transition from a top recruiter to a recruitment business owner? “I think the biggest thing was a little more strategic, which was the niche that we defined … and the geographical area where I decided to do it.”    Mike's approach was very analytical, studying the industry trends and looking at the cities with the highest growth. This research even influenced where they decided to live. He explained, “I knew that I liked working locally and meeting the companies and the candidates in person because I felt like it gave just a leg up on the rapport and relationship building.” I think this was a smart move. When I was a recruiter running a desk, we always insisted on visiting our clients in person. Aside from building rapport, as Mike also mentioned, meeting up with clients is a “good litmus test of how serious they are about working with you.”   Posting on LinkedIn to Build Your Brand and Develop New Business   Mike is good at cold calling and routinely makes cold calls to both clients and candidates. However, he also leverages LinkedIn as a key component of his business development strategy.   Mike is a firm believer that you can win clients through LinkedIn. You will hear an amazing story about how Mike received an inbound enquiry from a VP of HR at a billion-dollar company because of a story he posted on LinkedIn. That senior executive became a client and gave Mike a lot of repeat business, which might never have happened without that LinkedIn post.    Mike also shared how consistent posting helps build a “continued relationship” with potential leads that you may have a cold called before. Here are things that you will find insightful in this section of the episode:   Why consistent posting can win your clients in the long run. Overcoming fear and imposter syndrome when posting LinkedIn content. How to generate ideas for your LinkedIn content.    Why You Need to Post Videos on LinkedIn   What I also admire about Mike's LinkedIn strategy is how he is not shying away from posting videos. What is his thought process in creating video content? He shared two things:   There are “certain topics that don't lend themselves all that well to just text form” and can be best shared with a video. Building digital rapport. Mike puts it this way, “Well, I want to get people to get to know me. So if you want to get people to get to know you, do you think that they're gonna get to know you and feel like they know you better from something that you write or from seeing you talk and looking at you visually? Obviously, visually is better.”   When was the last time that you created and posted a video on LinkedIn? If you want differentiation, increased engagement, and to demonstrate expertise, posting a video is something you can start. In our coaching group, sharing ideas and best practices for posting video content is a recurring discussion topic.   Our Sponsors   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro and Recruitment Entrepreneur.   i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Episode 14 | Sara Kennedy We first met Sara when Colten was first identified with unilateral hearing loss. She helped guide us through many decisions in the beginning when we were weighing options of equipment and set us up with early intervention. Sara later connected us with families of "Deaf Plus" children- is the reference to the child's hearing status combined with additional conditions. We are so grateful to have met Sara and been a part of Colorado Hands and Voices. Sara is a mom of four children, including a daughter who was late-identified following a homebirth. She enjoyed a career as an occupational therapist, but resigned a year after her daughter was identified so that she could help her with language leaning – and while expecting child number 4. She went to one of the first Hands & Voices conferences in Colorado, and raised her hand as a volunteer to edit their four-page newsletter. She had several volunteer and paid positions in El Paso County and statewide, eventually becoming the Director of the Colorado Chapter of Hands & Voices through last Feb 2022. Today, she continues to edit the Hands & Voices Communicator (now an international newspaper) along with many other activities from grantwriting to training and serves as the Co-Chair of the Colorado Infant Hearing Advisory Committee. Sara has a special interest in practical ideas that close the gap for late-identified kids and their families. She was a lead author of the Parent Safety Toolkit for the O.U.R. Children's Safety Project, a co-creator for the Virtual Waiting Room, coauthor for the manual Bridge to Preschool: Navigating a Successful Transition, past editions of the Colorado Resource Guide and Parent Funding Toolkit, has written or presented on navigating the IEP/IFSP system, siblings, Eight Reasons to Say Yes to EI, why families move, the decision process regarding cochlear implants and transition from high school. A favorite presentation last year was Introverts Can Be Great Leaders. She reads, hikes, refinishes furniture, and skis when she can. Contact her at Sara@handsandvoices.org. Kid Power O.U.R. In this solo episode of Success That Lasts, Jared Siegel unpacks structural capital and related topics. He shares insights about wealth succession and how families can ensure their heirs are fully equipped to inherit wealth. “Families with significant wealth or family businesses often operate within a network of trust - partnerships, contracts, and other kinds of legal and business entity relationships,” Jared says. “In this context, structural capital represents the family's cumulative understanding of this network and ability to navigate it efficiently.” It's human nature to value things based on how much they cost us. Therefore, you value wealth you are given differently than if you had suffered, sacrificed, and risked for it. The key to efficiency is making a checklist - one of the most simple and humble techniques, according to author, surgeon, and public health researcher Atul Gawande. Even the Air Force and leading hospitals use checklists to manage their everyday tasks. “The single most important reason for creating a trust in the first place should be to provide a gift that promotes the beneficiary's real freedom,” Jared advises. “A trust that's well designed should deliver an enhancement to the beneficiary that cultivates a greater maturity and equips them to pursue their own aspirations.” Resources Jared Siegel on LinkedIn | Twitter Email: jsiegel@delapwa.com  DelapCPA.com The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande Preparing Heirs: Five Steps to a Successful Transition of Family Wealth and Values by Roy Williams and Vic Preisser
