Ed Carpenter has enjoyed a lot of success at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He's earned the pole position three times, had five front row starts in seven years, and his team placed three cars in the Firestone Fast 9 in 2019. He won the Indy Lights race at the Brickyard in 2003. Carpenter also has three wins at other tracks in the NTT IndyCar Series. He's also led a race in 14 of the last 15 years. Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) always seems to have their cars dialed in to go fast at Indianapolis. Ed took time out of his busy schedule and joined us on a Zoom call interview to talk about what the April open test would mean to their team and how they approach the Speedway for “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Without getting into trade secret details, he opens up about aerodynamics and other ways they prepare their cars for the challenge of going fast reliably at Indianapolis. Enjoy! NOTE: It was announced soon after this interview was completed that Paretta Autosport with driver Simona de Silvestro have formed a technical alliance with Ed Carpenter Racing. ECR will supply a car and several crew members to augment Beth Paretta's team from last year's Indy 500. They tentatively have three races planned for this year starting in June. Additionally, ECR driver Rinus VeeKay, won the pole at Barber Motorsports Park and finished third. ECR driver Conor Daly qualified in the Firestone Fast Six at the Indianapolis road course two weeks before the “500” and finished fifth – good momentum leading into the “500.” By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason
It all started with a chat just prior to the start of the 2021 Indianapolis 500. Racing legend Lyn St. James has been a longtime advocate for women in motorsports and had basically run out of gas while carrying the banner for equality. But, when she witnessed first-hand what Beth Paretta was doing with her Paretta Autosport team at the Indy 500, she was refueled. She reached out to Paretta about forming an organization to help facilitate women's participation in the sport they both loved and Beth was on board 1000% as she told Lyn – You are not alone. Together they contacted a team of about 40 women currently working as professionals in motorsport, along with some male allies, and a working group was formed in August 2021 to advance the idea to reality. Today, The Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA) organization is a community of professionals supporting opportunities for women across all disciplines of motorsport. By creating an inclusive, resourceful environment, the 501 (c)(3) charity looks to foster mentorship, advocacy, education, and growth to help ensure a successful and effective future for women in professional motorsports roles. Beth and Lyn chat with host Amanda Busick about how their dream has become a reality and the opportunities and events that have already developed because of their new venture. Two motorsport powerhouses in one podcast. This is a good one.

There are certain moments in history that everyone remembers. There are events that changed our perspective of the planet, like the first moon landing. Others that changed the way we live, like the tech revolution. And others that changed our perspectives about what was achievable, like the first majority female racing team to qualify for the notoriously competitive, male-driven Indy 500 motorsports race. In this segment of our Women Driving the Future series, Ed Bernardon continues the conversation with Beth Paretta of Paretta Autosport. Not only has the team she put together helped demonstrate that barriers can be broken, but it's also shown other women that careers in motorsports and other STEM fields hold plenty of promising opportunities. In today's episode, we dig deeper into the logistics of putting a talented team together in a short period of time, and we discuss the challenges of turning people with other day jobs into a quick on their feet team of racing technicians, strategists, and crew members. We also talk about how her team was received in this long male-dominated industry, and how she's helping to encourage more women to think about careers in STEM.Some Questions I Ask:What does your hashtag, #drivenbywomen, stand for? In this segment of our Women Driving the Future series, Ed Bernardon interviews Beth Paretta, owner of Paretta Autosport. Start your summer by cruising with the windows down, the wind blowing through your hair and a smile on your face. That’s how Indy fans prefer their Memorial Day too. 1. Move over Gatorade; milk is the drink of the winners at International Motor Speedway. The tradition that involves the winner swigging milk began in 1936 with Louis Meyer, whose go-to drink after a win was a refreshing glass of milk. An overjoyed milk executive spotted the act, and the rest is history. 2. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also known as the Brickyard. It’s called the Brickyard because the track used to be made of bricks, which are still exposed under the asphalt at the start-finish line. It’s a tradition for the drivers to kiss these bricks before the race. We cannot confirm or deny if that’s where cold sores come from. 3. The race isn’t just for men. In its history, 10 women have raced at Indy, with Danica Patrick setting the record for the highest finishing position for a woman with a third-place finish in 2005. She is also the first woman to ever lead a lap at the Indy 500. Making history this race is the Paretta Autosport team with driver Simona de Silvestro. The team, which consists of mostly women, became the first female driver/owner duo in IndyCar Series history to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. 4. While you might not be familiar with the Indy 500, there will be familiar faces on the broadcast with retired IndyCar and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) driver Danica Patrick joining Mike Tirico and retired NASCAR (and current Indy Car road course driver) Jimmie Johnson in the booth. This year’s race is all about the youth movement, but six-time Indy 500 winner Scott “Iceman” Dixon beat out Colton Herta, the 21-year-old American, and Rinus VeeKay, 20, for pole position (i.e., the best place to start the race). 5. Something you never thought you’d want to know, yet here we are. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is considered one of the world’s largest spectator facilities with more than 250,000 permanent seats and average attendance at the Indy 500 of 300,000. Only 135,000 fans will be in attendance for this year’s race. The infield is 253 acres, which usually (in non-COVID years) hosts an EDM concert in the Snake Pit and includes a golf course. Churchill Downs, Yankee Stadium, Rose Bowl Stadium, Vatican City, the Taj Mahal, the White House, Liberty Island and the Roman Colosseum could simultaneously fit inside the Speedway.
