Danny Sullivan is a legendary race car driver who is best known for his 360-degree spin on lap 120 of the 1985 Indianapolis 500. He was attempting to pass Mario Andretti and after recovering from the spin, he led the last 61 laps to become the 69th winner of the Indy 500 and the moniker “Spin to Win.” Danny is also known for being one of the first “big” personalities in motorsports by using his fame to help promote his sponsors and his likeness through appearances on late-night talk shows, in movies and other forms of media. Danny's promotional prowess was good and NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Jeff Gordon says he emulated him throughout his racing career. Danny was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2012 and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 2022. He remains active as a TV personality, producer, and entrepreneur, staying involved in many forms of racing and business. Danny is here to share his latest venture, Racers Roundtable with Danny Sullivan and Tony Stewart.

Alex welcomes back George Levy, president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, this time with Class of 2025 inductee (and all-around class act) Skip Barber in tow. Mr. Barber's upcoming induction into the Hall of Fame next March will include a private VIP meet-and-greet as well as other priceless experiences for the lucky winner of our current charity auction to benefit the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Skip talks about a modern electric car attempting to break track records around the world; cutting his teeth driving backward as much as forward; his early years of racing a dilapidated Bugeye on less than a shoestring budget before moving on to a string of "someone else's" British cars; being the fastest guy who never "made it"; the beauty of the Formula Ford; and March-ing forward from the unexpected end of his motor racing career to become a storied and successful coach for future greats of the sport. Alex and George then talk about the beginnings of the Hall of Fame, the voting process for new inductees, their museum at Daytona International Speedway, and the power of the can't-buy experiences that only the Hall of Fame can put together. Mario Andretti is one of the greatest race car drivers of all time. His son Michael has not only had a successful driving career, but has also been extremely successful on the business side of racing. Andretti Global is working hard to get on the Formula One grid with their own team having Cadillac as their manufacturing partner. Although the FIA has approved their application, Formula One Management (FOM) has rejected their application. Starting an F1 team from scratch and trying to put everything in place is extremely complicated, time consuming and expensive. At the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, Andretti was in the media center along with George Levy - president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA), reminiscing about his success as a driver here, especially with the Newman/Haas team. Alex has the pleasure of interviewing none other than legendary racing pioneer Jim Hall as a preface to his conversation with president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame George Levy, who has just released a fantastic biography of Hall. The trio talk about the tragedy that punctuated Hall's formative years in Colorado; Hall's first incognito race car experience at 19; going to work for Carroll Shelby right out of college; the Maserati Birdcage; the early Hall photography of Bob Jackson, who would shortly become famous for quite another photo; buying a $2,600 war surplus P-51D Mustang over the phone; crash landing said Mustang into a churchyard; the doctrine of "there's always a better way"; Levy's experience interviewing other greats like Stewart, Gurney, and Penske for the book; overcoming telemarketer stigma to get to the good stuff; the most surprising information uncovered during that extensive research; the six important elements of every F1 car that were all introduced by Hall in the '60s; a writing trial by fire at Autoweek; how to order the book; the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Daytona; the Lancia Stratos as the perfect car for the taller man; and the wonders of happenstance. For the first time on Powerboat Talk, we're excited to have back with us the renowned circle boat racing icon, Duff Daily. I first had the privilege of interviewing Daily last November for an article in Speedboat Magazine. At that time, he had just clinched a win in his class at the Parker Enduro, with his son Dustin by his side as co-driver. Since that initial interaction, Daily and I have maintained contact, frequently discussing his illustrious racing history and the ongoing racing season. After witnessing the recent race by the Southern California Speedboat Club at Lake Ming in Bakersfield, and with the Enduro approaching, I felt it was the perfect time to reconnect with Daily for an in-depth conversation. In addition to discussing Daily's adventures in K-boat racing this year, we touched upon his recent nomination to the Motorsports Hall of Fame, the innovative engine he acquired for his son's Biesemeyer circle boat, and updates on the restoration of a reproduction of his father's iconic F-Service vintage racer. Now at 70, the retired Miami fireman, Daily, boasts an impressive racing career spanning over half a century.

During the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, there was more than just racing action on the track. On Saturday of race weekend, the “Racing Goes Safer, Driver Safety Seminar” was held in the Long Beach Convention Center. This almost annual (not held during COVID) seminar is hosted by the Stand 21 Safety Foundation. This year, a video featuring Romain Grosjean kicked off the meeting, and then special guest and racing champion, Tommy Kendall, was invited to not only speak about what he went through in his horrific crash at Watkins Glen, but also to MC a very special announcement during the seminar. The announcement was the 2023 class of inductees into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHF). This Hall of Fame is very unique in that it represents all forms of motorsports from cars to bikes to planes to boats. Two of the inductees (doctors Terry Trammel and Stephen Olvey) have been instrumental in racing safety and helping Indy car drivers in particular. I was able to get a short interview here with the president of the MSHF, George Levy. A true gentleman and passionate supporter of all forms of motorsport, the interview left us wanting to visit the MSHF museum and speak with him again. As it turns out, we were able to do that (Part 2 next week). Here's a short interview that will give you an overview of the MSHF and also some of the inductees for the class of 2023. Enjoy! For a normal shift On the Dogwatch, we proceed at the measured pace of a ship under sail, looking out at the natural world, considering interesting ideas as if we were having a conversation on an evening dogwatch shift. Today, however, we ramp the speed significantly as we learn how to time things that go very fast. We visit with Judy Stropus, who is a legendary timer and scorer in the auto racing world, and has also been involved as a driver as well. She is author of the Stropus Guide to Auto Race Timing and Scoring, is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame, and is the current Grand Marshal of Concours d'Elegance in Greenwich Connecticut. In our conversation we discuss the ways in which timing and scoring was done before the advent of electronic timers, and how Judy's career developed both in the pit as a timer and on the track as a driver. We discuss a wide range of perspectives, including how timing and scoring is done, the place for fear on the racetrack (spoiler, there isn't one), Judy's friendship with Paul Newman, and her participation in what is casually referred to as the “Cannonball Run,” driving a Cadillac Limousine. So buckle up, and let's get to our conversation with Judy Stropus.

Malcolm Smith is probably the greatest name in American off-road racing. He's won more races in more places on both two wheels and four. Smith's list of racing achievements is stunning. Between 1966 and 1976, he won eight gold medals in the International Six Day Trial (the Olympics of motorcycling). He's won the Baja 1000 six times (three times on a motorcycle and three times in a car), including the first NORRA Mexican 1000 in 1967. He's won the Baja 500 four times and the grueling Mint 400 twice. He won the Roof of Africa Rally (his most memorable race) and raced the Paris Dakar Rally twice, “In 1988, I finished fourth overall. It was unlike any event I had ever raced before or since. I consider it one of my proudest accomplishments. It's easy to go fast over twenty minutes; it's much harder to go fast over twenty days. The difference? Preparation. Perseverance.” He's in the legendary inaugural class of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He's also in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the American Motorcycle Association Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Ironically, his appearance with Mert Lawwill and Steve McQueen in the 1971 Bruce Brown film On Any Sunday was what sealed his fame. Famed among the motorcycling and the off-road racing world, he remains a humble man with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. He loves Baja, and his Malcolm Smith Motorsports Foundation has adopted the El Oasis Orphanage in Valle Trinidad, Baja Norte. The MSM Foundation provides full tuition to university or trade schools for the children at El Oasis. Funding comes through charity motorcycle rides organized through Malcolm Smith Adventures. Each year, 15-18 university students receive full support from the ride, including tuition, books, transportation, clothing, and a personal stipend. In this conversation, Malcolm was enormously generous with his time and in opening his home for our meeting. He's fighting a widely-reported battle with Parkinson's disease and fought valiantly to find and form the words to answer my questions. After we wrapped our recording, Malcolm apologized for his performance. He's a relentless competitor and wants to do his best in every way in everything. Before I left, I followed him up his long driveway in 110-degree heat. He wanted to show me a couple of old Land Rovers that he has stashed in his orchard. I had to hustle to keep up!
