My name is Al, (0:00:36) Kelly: And my name is Kelly. (0:00:37) Al: and we’re here today to talk about cartridge core games. (0:00:43) Al: Welcome back Kelly, how are you doing? (0:00:46) Kelly: Pretty good. Enjoying the long weekend. It’s been nice. (0:00:49) Kelly: It’s nice to be back, too. How have you been? (0:00:51) Al: Yes, yes, good, good, good. (0:00:54) Al: I’m, yeah, doing all right. Just, you know, I’m cramming in as many farming games as possible (0:00:58) Al: before the end of the year. (0:01:00) Al: My game of the year episode is as accurate as possible. (0:01:04) Al: So busy. (0:01:06) Kelly: - Good dedication, really dedicated. (0:01:08) Al: Yeah, I mean, I feel like I probably could have played half of these in the first half of the year, but, you know, procrastination. (0:01:13) Kelly: But yeah, where’s the fun without that? (0:01:18) Al: Yeah, this is when the ADHD kicks in and goes, “Oh, deadline, great!” (0:01:22) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, no, literally. (0:01:25) Kelly: Do you have any things I did in like the 10 minutes (0:01:27) Kelly: before I sat down to record this? (0:01:29) Kelly: I think I ran through like five chores, just, why? (0:01:30) Al: Yeah, classic. Well, this is also Kelly’s 10th episode on the podcast. (0:01:40) Kelly: Whoo, I can’t believe it’s been 10. When you said that, I was so shocked. (0:01:40) Al: It’s wild. Yeah, yeah. I was surprised as well. I didn’t expect it to be that many because (0:01:52) Al: I guess it’s just been over a long time. Your first episode was in 2021. So we did Spirit (0:01:56) Al: and then the Spiritfare DLC, and then you and Kev did. (0:02:00) Al: Cult of the Lamb, and then you and Bev and Maddie did Potion Permit, (0:02:05) Al: and then we did Fishing Break, you and Kev did Graveyard Keeper, and then we did Pumpkin Panic, (0:02:11) Al: an episode called “What is Stardew still missing?” which I don’t even remember doing, (0:02:15) Al: but apparently we did. Yeah, sure. (0:02:16) Kelly: I remember that. (0:02:17) Kelly: That’s when it came out for the PC. (0:02:23) Al: I need to see how many episodes we’ve done on Stardew, and then the Dave the Diver story episode. (0:02:29) Kelly: Oh, yes. (0:02:30) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:02:31) Al: And then this will be your 10th one, wild, there you go. (0:02:34) Kelly: So many fishing– (0:02:35) Kelly: farming games, not fishing games. (0:02:37) Kelly: Also fishing games. (0:02:38) Al: Well, yeah, one of them was specifically a fishing game. (0:02:41) Kelly: Yeah. (0:02:42) Al: And the others almost all have fishing in them. (0:02:44) Al: Does Dave the Diver count as fishing? (0:02:46) Kelly: I wanna say yes, but I feel like no, because realistically to me it’s the mechanic of fishing. (0:02:55) Al: Well, that’s why that’s why I’m questioning it. (0:02:58) Kelly: Like I think the fishing is so different. (0:02:58) Al: But like, there’s a lot. (0:03:02) Kelly: Would you count scuba diving and animal crossing as fishing? No, that’s like it. (0:03:07) Al: You’re not catching fish when you’re scuba diving, though. (0:03:08) Kelly: Oh, you’re not? Oh, the dive thing? No. (0:03:10) Al: No. (0:03:12) Al: No, you only catch fish with a fishing rod in Animal Crossing. (0:03:16) Al: You, there are, it’s quite, yeah, yeah. (0:03:16) Kelly: Is it just like clams? (0:03:18) Al: I think maybe as far as like a crab, but I don’t think there’s any fish. (0:03:23) Kelly: Okay. No, I would not count David Diver as a fishing game, honestly. (0:03:28) Al: Interesting. OK, that’s this is our controversy of the episode. (0:03:33) Al: Listeners, tell us, do you think Dave the Diver is a fishing episode or not? (0:03:40) Al: If you make me decide, I would say yes, it is a fishing game (0:03:44) Al: because I think that fishing would be catching fish. (0:03:48) Al: I don’t think you specifically have to use a fishing rod or a fishing net (0:03:52) Al: to count as fishing. (0:03:54) Kelly: I see your point. I think I’m going more off of the vibes of every other mini fishing game. (0:03:58) Al: Yeah. (0:04:01) Kelly: Because definition-wise, you’re correct. It is a fishing game. What else am I doing, (0:04:05) Kelly: if not fishing? But I wouldn’t count it with the fishing games. It almost is kind of like (0:04:06) Al: Yeah. I mean, I would say it’s a– Sure. Okay. I would say it is a fishing game, (0:04:11) Kelly: that little controversy they had with the indie game thing. Okay, okay. (0:04:18) Al: but not a cottagecore game, which is ironic because it’s a cottagecore podcast. And I feel (0:04:24) Al: like we had the discussion about whether it was cottagecore or not, multiple times throughout the (0:04:27) Al: summer. Anyway, five minutes discussion on the Diver who expected that. This episode, we are (0:04:34) Al: finally going to talk about Fields of (0:04:36) Al: Mistria. I realised that, apparently, Spotify has the (0:04:40) Al: ability to leave comments and I went on and noticed there’s a (0:04:43) Al: person on Spotify that has just been commenting regularly. Are (0:04:46) Al: you going to cover Fields of Mistria? So, yes, here we are (0:04:51) Al: covering Fields of Mistria. Shout out to you, our single (0:04:53) Kelly: For that one Spotify– (0:04:54) Al: commenter. I can’t even remember the name. Yeah, episodes as (0:05:01) Kelly: I didn’t know you could comment on Spotify stuff, either. (0:05:07) Al: Yeah, so there’s Jack. There we go. Jack, you’re the one who’s (0:05:12) Al: commented multiple times asking for Fields of Mistria. As (0:05:15) Kelly: Hey, Jack. I hope you enjoy this episode. (0:05:16) Al: recently as nine days ago. Yeah, I mean, we had decided to do (0:05:19) Kelly: This is personally for you, Jack. (0:05:25) Al: this before I even looked at Spotify. But yeah, sure. So (0:05:30) Al: we’re going to talk about Fields of Mistria. Before that, we (0:05:32) Al: We have some news. (0:05:36) Al: A bunch of new games and a bunch of updates. (0:05:39) Al: First of all, Kelly, what have you been up to? (0:05:42) Kelly: I have been playing a lot of Rimworld again, because I think it’s a (0:05:49) Kelly: like, I don’t know what it is, Stardew is like a march game for me. And I think Rimworld is a (0:05:57) Kelly: late fall game for me. So I am back to Rimworld, which is not cottagecore, but it is a lot of (0:06:01) Al: Okay. (0:06:04) Kelly: farming. I mean, I guess technically, you could play cottagecore style, because they do have like, (0:06:10) Kelly: No violence mode, which I have (0:06:12) Kelly: played because I just want to like build. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, no. And then I’ve also (0:06:14) Al: yeah it’s a management game though isn’t it management style game yeah yeah I’m (0:06:18) Al: not playing it then (0:06:21) Kelly: been playing web fishing, which is really cute and fun and like, very simple, but like the core (0:06:27) Kelly: mechanic of fishing that I just enjoy in every farming game without like the deadline of having (0:06:33) Al: So. (0:06:35) Kelly: having to go to bed at night. (0:06:36) Al: So I have a question about that. (0:06:39) Al: I have been interested in this, but not enough to play it. (0:06:43) Al: But what do you do you interact with the chat room aspect of? (0:06:50) Kelly: You can play alone, or you can join a random lobby, or you can play with your friends. (0:06:55) Al: And what have you been doing? (0:06:56) Kelly: I have been either playing alone or playing with friends. I’m not really a big like, go into random people’s lobbies. (0:07:01) Al: OK, but you have you have done it with friends. (0:07:04) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:07:05) Al: What does that actually like? (0:07:08) Al: What is actually like? Is it audio? (0:07:10) Al: Is it text? It’s text. (0:07:10) Kelly: No, it’s text. It’s text. And then you kind of get the, like, Animal Crossing sounds as you hit send. It, like, does that. (0:07:20) Kelly: On top of your little chat and it pops up above your head and like, you also have like a little chat message bar so you could like see what you’ve been talking about. (0:07:29) Al: Okay. Okay. Okay. Because I hadn’t I know I looked through the screenshots and I hadn’t seen anything that actually showed the chat room aspect of it. It was all just like, you know, pictures of the fishing. (0:07:37) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it’s, it’s like a cute little aspect. I like that. I think it’s good (0:07:48) Kelly: that it’s like text. But very, very cute little game. Very cute. I just love fishing games. (0:07:49) Al: Yeah, yeah for sure (0:07:57) Kelly: I’m not going to lie. What have you been up to? (0:07:58) Al: Fair enough. (0:08:04) Al: I have obviously been playing Fields of Mistria quite a bit. (0:08:09) Al: We’ll talk about that when we come to it. (0:08:10) Al: I’ve also been keeping going with Marvel (0:08:13) Al: Snap and Pokemon Pocket. (0:08:16) Kelly: Oh, that’s the TCG one, right? (0:08:18) Kelly: I’ve been playing that. (0:08:19) Al: Yes, yes. (0:08:21) Kelly: I keep forgetting to open my pack, so– (0:08:24) Al: Do you not just open it when you get the notification, no? (0:08:26) Kelly: I don’t have notifications for things. (0:08:29) Al: OK, right, OK, so I turn off a lot of notifications, right? (0:08:34) Al: But, right, if you forget things, which. (0:08:39) Kelly: Yeah, but I’m just going to swipe the notification away. (0:08:40) Al: Yeah. (0:08:42) Al: No, you tap on it and then you open the app, open the gate, open the thing, right? (0:08:46) Al: You just do it then, you do it there and then it’s so fast. (0:08:46) Kelly: No, I’m not gonna do that. (0:08:49) Al: This is so this one, but this is the beauty of this game is it’s so fast. (0:08:53) Al: It’s like you open it and you press it and you get your five cards, you get your (0:08:53) Kelly: It is, that is nice. (0:08:56) Al: Dopamine hit, you swipe the app away the next- (0:08:58) Al: and the notification comes up, you do exactly the same thing. (0:09:00) Kelly: Al, listen. You’re right. I’m not going to try to fight you on this because you are 100% right. (0:09:02) Al: Ten seconds. (0:09:08) Kelly: However, many times I open the app and a message pops up that says, “You didn’t finish opening your card pack!” (0:09:16) Al: did stop doing that then. Yeah, I do. I do that. Yeah, I have to say, yeah, that is a bit of a (0:09:18) Kelly: So that is– [Laughter] (0:09:21) Al: problem. I don’t know why this game is so obsessed with that. It’s like you open up, you open a pack (0:09:26) Al: and you see it and then you write, close the app. And it’s like, I’ve seen my cards. I saw my cards, (0:09:28) Kelly: Mm-hmm because I forgot to like swipe it up. Yeah (0:09:32) Al: right? Don’t tell me I didn’t finish just because I haven’t gone and seen the 15 million animations (0:09:37) Kelly: Yeah, exactly. (0:09:37) Al: after that. It’s the same because it’s the same thing with, uh, with the battles, especially the (0:09:41) Al: solo battles is bizarre, right? Because it’s like, if you, you know, (0:09:46) Al: you do a battle and then you get annoyed because you lose. So you close, (0:09:49) Al: you just swipe the app away in anger. It’s like a really satisfying thing to do. (0:09:53) Al: And then you open it next time and it’s like, oh, did, you know, you didn’t finish this battle. (0:09:57) Al: I’m like, I did. I lost because I didn’t go through this stuff. Don’t make me relive this. (0:09:58) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, I actually I haven’t battled yet, but I completely understand. (0:10:01) Al: Why are you making me relive this? Go away. (0:10:10) Kelly: Yeah, but I do like the aspect of the whole idea that it is a two second app where you just open it open your card pack and then close it again. (0:10:18) Al: Perfect. That’s fair. That’s fair. But the problem is you can (0:10:18) Kelly: Like, I just want it for the cards I don’t want to really battle. (0:10:25) Al: get more cards by battling. Oh, yes. Absolutely. I don’t I (0:10:26) Kelly: Is it better than Pokemon Go? (0:10:28) Kelly: I’m not sure. (0:10:30) Kelly: Okay. (0:10:32) Kelly: Maybe I’ll try it, maybe I’ll try it. (0:10:34) Kelly: We’ll see. I gotta get more cards first. (0:10:36) Kelly: Yeah. (0:10:37) Al: don’t do PvP battles very much because like, you know, people (0:10:41) Al: suck. But I do there’s a lot of solo battles in the game. And (0:10:45) Al: know, there’s a new solo battle event going on right now. (0:10:48) Al: now that has unique cards for winning things. So yeah, against the computer. (0:10:51) Kelly: Oh, you can just play it yourself. (0:10:53) Kelly: Okay, okay, I didn’t I didn’t even look at that. (0:10:56) Al: The best bit is you can also tell the game to play for you. So you can have the computer (0:11:02) Al: playing against the computer. Yes, but what I do is when I’m sitting at my desk and I want just (0:11:04) Kelly: What? Kinda lazy? (laughs) (0:11:10) Al: a couple of battles and I don’t care about it because I’ve already beaten these battles, (0:11:14) Al: I just want to beat them more for more rewards (0:11:16) Al: Then I just have it sit (0:11:18) Al: In here I like just down on my phone (0:11:22) Al: Stand it’s just sitting there and it’s just doing the battles and every so often (0:11:27) Al: I look over it and see if I’ve won or lost and then I start again (0:11:30) Kelly: that is nice. I agree. That is a nice feature. Oh, yeah, I should go check mine. I do really (0:11:34) Al: Speaking of which I just got a notification that I’ve got packs. Let’s see. I’ve already got that already got that already got that (0:11:39) Al: Already got that no new cards great (0:11:43) Kelly: like looking at the card art, though. I think that’s the most fun of it. (0:11:46) Al: I’m just in an (0:11:48) Al: unfortunate position right now where I have most of the cards so most days I’m getting nothing (0:11:52) Kelly: Hmm. I only started like a week ago, I think. Also, I’ve noticed I’m very biased. I like almost (0:11:59) Kelly: never opened a Charizard pack. I know, I know. But I don’t want to. I know. I’m just, I have my own problem. (0:12:00) Al: Yeah, some of the cards are specific to that pack. (0:12:09) Al: I don’t know what to tell you. (0:12:15) Al: Anyway, so yeah, Pocket and Snap, I am at 98 on Snap now, so hopefully I’ll get to 100 by (0:12:22) Al: the end of Tuesday. We’ll see. And I’ve also started playing, speaking of playing games (0:12:31) Al: until the Game of the Year episode. I’ve been playing Luma Island as well, so yeah. (0:12:38) Al: I think it’s doing some interesting new things that I may or may not talk about in a week, and (0:12:45) Kelly: - Okay. (0:12:48) Al: I think I appreciate what it is doing, but I don’t know if it’s for me. (0:12:56) Al: But I’ve only put in like 15 hours into it so far, so. (0:13:00) Al: I’m gonna need more time to make that, isn’t it? (0:13:02) Kelly: I think that that sounds like it’ll be fun to see where it goes at least, (0:13:06) Al: Yeah. (0:13:07) Kelly: you know, and sometimes even if the mechanics aren’t for you, (0:13:09) Kelly: it’s like nice just to see people trying. (0:13:11) Al: Oh, for sure, for sure. (0:13:14) Al: All right, that’s what we’ve been up to. (0:13:18) Al: Next is our monthly segment of the recent releases, (0:13:22) Al: because this is only a second time doing it, but I decided that because there’s so many releases (0:13:28) Al: of games. (0:13:29) Al: And I’m always talking about the future. (0:13:30) Al: Talking about the past, I felt like people might want a monthly recap on what’s out (0:13:35) Al: in case they’ve heard of something that they’re like, “Oh, that’s something I want to play.” (0:13:40) Al: And now you can. (0:13:41) Al: So there have been four releases in November. (0:13:43) Al: I know it’s now December when you’re hearing this, but this is for November. (0:13:47) Al: So we have Farming Simulator 25. (0:13:50) Al: So if you love that Farming Simulator, there’s your new one, it’s out now. (0:13:55) Al: We also have Everhome, which I think… (0:14:01) Al: I don’t think that was previously Early Access, was it? (0:14:04) Al: No, I’m not seeing anything about Early Access, so that’s just a release now. (0:14:10) Kelly: Oh, that one looks cute. (0:14:11) Al: It does. (0:14:12) Al: It’s definitely on my list of “I want to play this,” but that list is very long. (0:14:15) Kelly: I’m going to add it to my list right now. (0:14:18) Al: And then we have Petite Island, which I’m pretty sure was in Early Access. (0:14:23) Al: So that is now 1.0. (0:14:25) Al: Is that correct? (0:14:26) Al: Oh, no. (0:14:27) Al: No, it’s not saying anything about Early Access. (0:14:28) Al: I was wrong. (0:14:30) Kelly: Honestly, with the amount of games that are in early access for forever, it’s like, (0:14:37) Kelly: who’s to remember anymore? Everything feels like it’s in early access. (0:14:42) Al: And and then Luma Island as well, which is also not in early access. (0:14:48) Al: So that’s four releases. (0:14:49) Al: None of them in early access. (0:14:51) Al: None of them have been in early access one unusual month. (0:14:54) Kelly: That is pretty crazy is it is it like I wonder if it’s like a pre-christmas thing (0:14:58) Al: Possibly, possibly. (0:14:59) Kelly: You know (0:15:00) Al: I do think a lot of I mean, a lot of games get delayed at this point. (0:15:04) Al: Like you don’t get a huge number of games coming out just now (0:15:06) Al: because they’ve either come out in October in time for, you know, (0:15:12) Al: the Christmas sale or they come out next year because they didn’t quite manage it. (0:15:18) Kelly: Mm hmm. Yeah, that. (0:15:18) Al: They don’t tend to like to come out in December or November (0:15:21) Al: because there’s too much happening. (0:15:25) Al: All right, next, we’ve got the news. (0:15:28) Al: The first news is a piece of news that I (0:15:30) Al: meant to talk about in the last episode, but I forgot (0:15:34) Al: because I didn’t write it down for some reason. (0:15:36) Al: And that is that they’ve announced a new series of stardew concerts. (0:15:40) Al: they had the previous series. (0:15:42) Al: Stargie Concerts that were called Festival of Seasons. (0:15:44) Al: The new ones are called Symphony of Seasons, and these are bigger. (0:15:49) Al: It’s a 35 piece orchestra. (0:15:52) Al: I believe the last one was under 20. (0:15:55) Al: I can’t remember exactly. (0:15:56) Al: I don’t know if it has it listed, but it was it was certainly much more intimate. (0:16:01) Al: It called it a chamber orchestra. (0:16:02) Al: Is that a specific number? (0:16:04) Al: I suspect not. (0:16:05) Al: Rona would be shouting at me if she was in the room. (0:16:06) Kelly: I have no idea. (0:16:07) Al: No, it just means just means small. (0:16:12) Al: So we may if you’ve not listened to it, me and Rona did a greenhouse episode on (0:16:18) Al: going to the previous Stargie Valley concert because Rona, my wife, is a big (0:16:23) Al: musician. She enjoys music. (0:16:26) Al: She does not play Stargie Valley. (0:16:27) Al: So it was a fun discussion to have about the music versus the the game sort of thing. (0:16:34) Al: I have successfully purchased tickets for the new concert. (0:16:37) Al: one the one that they’re doing in Scotland which (0:16:42) Al: obviously one is not very many, but we actually get one in many cases we don’t even get one. (0:16:47) Al: So I’m very happy to actually have one. (0:16:48) Kelly: Whoo! Whoo! Yeah, that is exciting. I forgot you went to the last round. (0:16:55) Al: And the Yeah, yeah. (0:16:58) Al: So that was earlier this year sometime, April or something. (0:17:04) Al: And that was in a converted church in Edinburgh. (0:17:08) Al: This new one is in 2026. (0:17:12) Al: It’s over a year away, which is just because of the time of the year that makes it sound (0:17:17) Al: even further away. (0:17:18) Al: It’s actually only like a year and two months away or something. (0:17:21) Al: I think it’s February. (0:17:22) Kelly: - Oh yeah, it’s heavy, all right. (0:17:22) Al: So it’s not that bad, but it does sound ridiculously far away. (0:17:30) Al: But they’re doing that, and this shows you how they’ve gone up a little bit. (0:17:32) Al: They’ve gone from a converted church in Edinburgh to the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow, which (0:17:38) Al: which is, I think, three times the size. (0:17:42) Kelly: It’s, it’s, you know, you know, Stardew is big, but I think when you see it like in this kind of aspect, it’s like, wow. (0:17:48) Al: Yeah, this is their second world tour, and this one’s bigger. (0:17:52) Kelly: Yeah. (0:17:54) Kelly: The next one’s going to be stadium level concert. (0:17:58) Al: Yeah, I don’t think I would want to see stardew music in a stadium. (0:18:02) Kelly: No, I think this is much cuter. Yeah. Yeah. But no, that’s so that’s so cool. (0:18:03) Al: I feel like concert hall works best. (0:18:09) Al: So, yeah, it was funny because (0:18:11) Al: so there was a presale that if you signed up to the newsletter, you got the code. (0:18:14) Al: I signed up for that and then we got the code (0:18:17) Al: and then I forgot all about (0:18:18) Al: it. And it was like, because I had my laptop next to my work, because it was 9am on Monday. (0:18:24) Al: I had my personal laptop like next to my desk, ready to log on at nine, and then completely (0:18:29) Al: forgot. It was really unfortunate. And then I looked at the time, there was, I can’t remember (0:18:36) Al: what it was, I just randomly looked at the clock, and it was 11 o’clock and went, “Oh, (0:18:40) Al: the concert. Oh, no.” And so I went on and thankfully they still had. (0:18:49) Kelly: That’s good, especially because, like you said, you only have one night for Scotland, (0:18:53) Al: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And well, yeah. And it’s like I could go to England, but there’s only (0:18:54) Kelly: so it’s not like, “Oh, I could drive a few states over if I have to.” (0:19:01) Al: two in England and one of them is London, which is like four hour train ride or yeah. (0:19:06) Kelly: You wanna go to London? (0:19:07) Al: And who wants to go to London? And it’s like, it’s always annoying when you, cause like (0:19:11) Al: London gets the, cause I think you get like, obviously New York gets the, you know, Broadway (0:19:16) Al: musicals first cause obviously Broadway, uh, it’s kind of in the name. Um, but then they, (0:19:17) Kelly: Mm-hmm. (0:19:20) Al: They tend to go to London next and they take forever. (0:19:24) Al: You can always go to London for these things. (0:19:26) Al: It’s like, I don’t want to go to London, oh my word. (0:19:29) Kelly: Yeah, I don’t even want to go into the city for some of this stuff, so I feel you (0:19:34) Al: London is one of them, and Manchester is the other one. (0:19:36) Al: Manchester, despite being further north, is harder to get to than London. (0:19:41) Kelly: Oh, really? I thought I thought that would be closer to you, honestly. (0:19:44) Al: If you’re driving, it’s faster. (0:19:46) Al: But if you’re getting the train, it’s more difficult. (0:19:48) Al: It takes longer to get there. (0:19:48) Kelly: Mm. That makes sense. (0:19:50) Al: because they’ve got like a super fast train from Edinburgh to… (0:19:53) Al: London. It’s like four hours on the train which is fine but then it becomes a whole weekend thing (0:20:01) Al: rather than a night thing. Whereas this is, it starts at 7pm it’s like I can get my kids (0:20:08) Al: mostly ready for bed and then head off and then be back in for midnight. (0:20:13) Kelly: Yeah, you know, that’s nice. Yeah, that’ll be exciting. I didn’t realize it was, I mean, (0:20:18) Kelly: like you said, it’s only like a year basically away. (0:20:20) Al: Yeah, I think the American dates start in like August or something. (0:20:25) Kelly: Mm-hmm. Yeah, end of August. (0:20:26) Al: Yeah, the first dates in Seattle. (0:20:30) Kelly: I will say it’s funny. There’s no New York City date. (0:20:33) Kelly: It’s only upstate New York and New Jersey. (0:20:35) Al: Oh, that’s funny. Is that because New York City is just stupidly expensive to? (0:20:40) Kelly: That’s what I was about to say is it’s definitely because of that. (0:20:42) Al: Of all the places, of all the places in the world, it’s like you do not want to do that. (0:20:47) Kelly: Yeah. So that one makes a lot– because at first I was like, wow, there’s no New York City one. (0:20:54) Kelly: but there is a new (0:20:55) Kelly: New Jersey, which is close enough. (0:20:57) Kelly: I would go there instead of Albany. (0:21:00) Al: Yes, yeah, because, well, I don’t know where New York is, but New Jersey’s closer, I mean, (0:21:06) Al: much of New Jersey is closer to you than most of New York, right? I know, because I read (0:21:09) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, exactly. (0:21:14) Al: a lot of Ms. Marvel Comics, and she’s based in New Jersey City. (0:21:19) Kelly: Yeah, those are my sister works, actually, (0:21:21) Kelly: right across the water. (0:21:23) Kelly: It’s nice there now. (0:21:24) Kelly: They’ve been making it nicer. (0:21:24) Al: New York is right there. You’ve got New York, and then you’ve got Manhattan, and then you’ve (0:21:32) Al: got Jersey City, and then you’ve got New York. That looks… Yeah, that would… Yeah. (0:21:33) Kelly: No, yeah, literally. (0:21:38) Kelly: Oh, they put all their businesses on that side, (0:21:40) Kelly: I’m pretty sure, because they’re like tax reasons. (0:21:42) Al: Because there’s also casinos in New Jersey as well, isn’t there? (0:21:43) Kelly: You know? (0:21:46) Kelly: Mm-hm. We have them in New York now, just they’re more limited. Yeah, there was one that (0:21:49) Al: Howdy! (0:21:52) Al: I thought New York was quite strict with gambling. (0:21:55) Kelly: they were, I think when I was like in my early 20s, stuff started to change (0:22:02) Kelly: and they opened up a casino near where I lived. But I think they were, it wasn’t, you know, (0:22:08) Kelly: as open as like other states are with the gambling even inside of there. You know, (0:22:13) Kelly: like not every game I guess is allowed or stuff like that. Difference. (0:22:17) Kelly: I don’t know what gambling rules are. I just go in and I pull the lever. (0:22:23) Al: - Okay. (0:22:27) Kelly: But yeah, usually people from New York would go to Jersey to gamble because it’s better over there. (0:22:32) Al: It’s really funny, I’m just looking at the Google Maps and I knew there was weird stuff around (0:22:36) Al: exactly who owned Ellis Island and Liberty Island and I noticed that on Google Maps it has most of (0:22:44) Al: Ellis Island listed as New Jersey with like a big chunk of it including the Immigrations Museum (0:22:52) Al: listed as New York. So it’s like because you’re over the line, technically the island is within (0:22:53) Kelly: Oh, that’s funny. (0:22:58) Al: New Jersey. So most of it is New Jersey, but then there’s like an (0:23:02) Al: exclave of New York. We love border disputes. Did you know that Greenland and Canada now (0:23:04) Kelly: I forgot about that whole debacle. (0:23:13) Kelly: Who doesn’t? (0:23:20) Al: have a land border due to a solved border dispute? Yeah, so there’s an island between (0:23:23) Kelly: No, I did not (0:23:27) Al: mainland Greenland mainland Greenland between (0:23:32) Al: Greenland Greenland and like the very north of Canada. (0:23:36) Al: What is that? (0:23:37) Al: It doesn’t have a name. Nobody cares about it. (0:23:41) Al: Which is like right in the middle of the water, (0:23:44) Al: which is where they put the border between them. (0:23:47) Al: So it like crosses the island. (0:23:48) Al: So they spent decades arguing over who owned it. (0:23:52) Al: And then eventually they decided they just split it. (0:23:53) Al: So now technically it’s half and half. (0:23:55) Al: So they have a land border there. (0:23:57) Kelly: that’s cool. It’s kind of like the two little islands in the bearings straight between what (0:23:59) Al: Thank you. (0:24:02) Al: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:24:03) Kelly: are they called? Something with a D. I don’t remember. Yeah. Yeah. That one’s messed up though (0:24:06) Al: Diomede, a big Diomede and little Diomede. (0:24:10) Kelly: because like people live there and then they can’t, they got split up and now they can’t see their (0:24:11) Al: Yeah. (0:24:14) Kelly: relatives. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. But you can’t cross that ice. It’s not allowed. (0:24:15) Al: Well, and it’s, and it’s essentially a land border half of the year anyway, because of the ice. (0:24:23) Al: Well, not, well, yeah, not allowed is very different from Kant. (0:24:27) Kelly: That’s true. That’s very true. (0:24:29) Al: Anyway, enough about geography. (0:24:32) Al: That’s the Stardew Valley Concert. (0:24:33) Al: Are you going to go to any of them? (0:24:34) Al: You’re going to go to the New Jersey one? (0:24:36) Kelly: Probably not, no. Yeah, probably not. (0:24:44) Kelly: It would be cool, but no. Yeah, no. I’m very excited for you. That is very cool. (0:24:46) Al: I’m excited for it. (0:24:52) Al: We don’t go to stuff very often because kids. (0:24:54) Al: So this year we went to the Stardew Concert (0:24:56) Al: and we went to Hamilton. (0:24:58) Al: Hamilton were in Edinburgh. (0:25:00) Al: And then next year, next year. (0:25:00) Kelly: Oh, nice. What is that? (0:25:02) Al: Next year, we’re going to see six. (0:25:04) Al: I think that’s what it’s called. (0:25:06) Al: So I believe it’s about Henry VIII’s wives. (0:25:08) Kelly: Oh, you know what? I think I might have heard something about this, actually. (0:25:11) Al: You’ll probably have seen music from it on TikTok. (0:25:15) Al: It’s all over the place. (0:25:15) Kelly: Yeah, that makes sense. TikTok is a great marketing ploy for that. (0:25:17) Al: So yeah, so many, so many musicals I’ve learned about that, yeah. (0:25:25) Kelly: Yeah, they’re really catchy. They get stuck in your head really well. (0:25:31) Al: Yeah, it’s a modern retelling of the lives of the six waves of Henry VIII. (0:25:36) Kelly: Okay. That’s cool. Yeah. No, yeah, yeah. Yeah, why not? And that’s fun. And now that you (0:25:38) Al: All I know is the music’s catchy, and Rona wants to see it, and I was like, yeah, let’s (0:25:45) Al: go see it, because I like the music. (0:25:49) Kelly: can, like, now that the kids are a little older and can actually get out a little bit (0:25:53) Kelly: more. It’s like, why not? (0:25:54) Al: So that’s our one for next year. (0:25:56) Al: And then we’ve got the Stardew concert the year after. (0:26:01) Al: Maybe I’ll see Wicked in 2026. (0:26:04) Kelly: Oh, yes, I want that to come out. I want them to release that on the streaming so that I don’t have to go into the theater for it. (0:26:10) Al: So here’s an interesting thing for you, apparently you can go into the New York Public Library (0:26:20) Al: and watch it. (0:26:20) Kelly: Oh, but I didn’t have to go to Manhattan. (0:26:21) Al: No, I know, I know, right? (0:26:26) Al: But you can, at least. (0:26:27) Al: I can’t. (0:26:28) Kelly: Yes. Okay. Okay. Okay. That’s fair. That’s fair. That’s fair. (0:26:29) Al: Yes, it would be work, but less work than going to the theatre. (0:26:30) Kelly: It would be a trek to get there and then have to sit there and watch it. (0:26:38) Kelly: Yes. I’ve heard it’s a lot of sing-alongs in the theaters, (0:26:42) Al: Goodness, thankfully, I live in a very, a place where it is unacceptable to sing. (0:26:44) Kelly: which I’m happy for those theater kids, but you know, I don’t, I’m not a theater. (0:26:54) Al: So when we went to see the film, there were not people singing. (0:26:59) Kelly: I wish. (0:27:00) Al: This is what is unusual. (0:27:01) Kelly: My mom, actually. (chuckles) (0:27:02) Al: This is what is unusual is actually the people clapped at the end of it. (0:27:06) Al: I have never had people clap at the end of the film. (0:27:07) Kelly: Oh, it’s like clapping when a flight lands. (0:27:11) Kelly: I hate both of those. (0:27:12) Kelly: I hate those kind of people. (chuckles) (0:27:12) Al: There is one situation where clapping when a flight lands is acceptable, (0:27:16) Kelly: Yes, yes. (0:27:16) Al: and that is when you thought you were going to die. (0:27:18) Kelly: Yeah. (chuckles) (0:27:20) Kelly: Every other time, it’s just like, (0:27:22) Kelly: that guy was just doing his job or her job, (0:27:24) Al: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:27:26) Kelly: like, this is how it should go, don’t clap. (0:27:29) Al: If you thought you were going to die or you’re flying Ryanair. (0:27:35) Al: All right, so let’s get into some game news now. (0:27:37) Al: So the first in the news is Sunheavour. (0:27:40) Al: I’ve announced their UK, Switzerland, and New Zealand release date. (0:27:46) Al: If you’re not up to date with the weird situation here, I will just summarize it. (0:27:51) Al: Sunheaven announced their America’s release date, and then they announced their Asian (0:27:57) Al: release dates. (0:27:59) Al: And then they announced most of Europe and also Australia, but not Switzerland, the United (0:28:05) Al: Kingdom, and New Zealand. (0:28:07) Al: And I, at the time, and still do think they just forgot. (0:28:10) Al: Well, so the Switzerland and United Kingdom I noticed were alphabetically at the end of the list, after all the other countries, so I just think they just copied and pasted incorrectly. (0:28:12) Kelly: ‘Cause I was like, what a weird bunch of countries to kind of like… (0:28:26) Al: I’m not sure why New Zealand, maybe they just forgot it existed, but I’m not 100% sure what the system. (0:28:34) Kelly: Because I would think New Zealand and Australia would be paired together like (0:28:36) Al: Well, so, so, right, OK, so… (0:28:40) Al: The weird thing about… So, the way the eShop works is there are, I think, six different regions. (0:28:47) Al: There is one for North America and one for South America, one for Europe, Australia, (0:28:55) Al: and New Zealand, and South Africa, I believe, and then there’s one for Japan, one for Hong Kong, (0:29:02) Al: and one for South Korea. Was that six? That was six. I believe that’s all of them. (0:29:04) Kelly: Okay. Yeah. (0:29:09) Al: what I understand based. (0:29:10) Al: So I think this is just them like cleaning up after their mistake and not admitting it, (0:29:30) Al: which is weird. And I also think the reason that they got they released it region by region is (0:29:36) Al: because they didn’t realize there were multiple regions until they’d already added it. (0:29:41) Al: To the Americas one. (0:29:42) Kelly: That’s so funny! (0:29:45) Al: And the problem is we don’t know any of this because the Sunhaven developers are very bad (0:29:49) Al: at communicating their discard after they announced the European release date before (0:29:54) Al: they announced that also included United Kingdom Switzerland and New Zealand was just people (0:29:59) Al: saying, so is it not coming to the UK? Is it coming a different date? What’s happening? (0:30:03) Al: And it turns out it’s exactly the same date, which would back up my they just forgot to tell you (0:30:08) Al: about it because there are two. (0:30:10) Al: There is a possibility of that, but I mean, generally the regions are very similar politically. (0:30:29) Kelly: which I could see because it’s like, aren’t some countries kind of (0:30:40) Kelly: Yeah, that’s true. (0:30:41) Al: But if that is the case, what happened was they ticked all of the boxes except the UK, (0:30:48) Al: Switzerland, and New Zealand. They did not check those boxes and then they put in a different (0:30:53) Al: release and checked just those three countries. Because it’s not even like an EU versus not EU (0:31:01) Al: thing, because Norway was in the first release and is not in the EU, and obviously Australia is (0:31:01) Kelly: No, it’s a, it’s a weird. (0:31:06) Al: is not in the EU and Switzerland is not in the EU but for (0:31:10) Al: and purposes regulatorily it is the same and the UK is mostly the same because obviously it was in (0:31:17) Al: the EU until four years ago so it’s a bit of a mess I miss clicks or copy and paste mistake which (0:31:22) Kelly: Yeah, that’s, that’s, that sounds like a misclick, a few misclicks, for sure. (0:31:31) Al: is what I think I think they went and tried to copy the entire list and just missed the last two (0:31:35) Al: of them. (0:31:38) Kelly: and then did not even like acknowledge it or any like. (0:31:41) Al: Yeah well that’s the weird thing right? Like people have been talking about this from the (0:31:45) Al: moment they published their post about it coming to Europe and they said nothing (0:31:51) Al: and so like if they had just it almost feels like they just don’t want to admit their mistakes (0:31:56) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But they could just make a joke about it like this. People would (0:31:56) Al: and but why in such a weird way? Yeah! (0:32:01) Kelly: find it funny like it’s not a it’s an inconsequential mistake like nobody’s. (0:32:06) Al: Yeah. And the people already think they don’t communicate. And so making this weird like, (0:32:13) Al: oh, we weren’t wrong. We were right all along. Thing just makes it seem even weirder. Oh, (0:32:22) Al: anyway, living on. We have one DLC release. So Everdream Valley have announced a family (0:32:31) Al: time DLC. This is coming to Steam on the 6th of December and then in consoles. (0:32:36) Al: Next year Q1. This has new story quests, new NPCs, new animals and new furniture. That’s (0:32:45) Al: an interesting thing to put in a DLC. Well, quests, were quests, animals and furniture. (0:32:52) Al: I guess NPCs like, I guess that’s not an unusual thing to put like new characters in, but the (0:32:54) Kelly: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, like I could see, like a lot of games will do like a new DLC with (0:33:03) Kelly: more quests. You know, so maybe. Yeah, yeah, that’s how I would take it. Yeah, like it’s (0:33:04) Al: Mm hmm. Yes. Yeah. Okay. I guess. Yeah. They’re not saying like this is by the DLC to get (0:33:10) Al: quests. It’s the DLC comes with quests. Okay. Yeah. That makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. The furniture (0:33:13) Kelly: like additional furniture, additional quests, additional NPCs kind of thing that that’s I (0:33:17) Kelly: could be wrong. But that’s how I would read it. Yeah, that’s just add on. (0:33:19) Al: is, I guess, not weird because it’s just like that’s pretty common thing. And then we have (0:33:24) Al: three updates to games. Snacko have released their builder’s dream update, which I’m sure (0:33:30) Al: you can guess where that is. It’s a whole bunch of crafting building stuff. (0:33:34) Al: Lots of good improvements. And I guess we’re not getting Snacko 1.0 this year. (0:33:41) Al: We’re probably getting next year. Because that’s 0.9.5. So close. (0:33:44) Kelly: They intentionally just decided we’re going to add a few more digits into this. (0:33:55) Kelly: It looks so cute though, I wanted to come out. (0:33:57) Al: Yeah, at this point I’m like, because I’ve not played it since the early access came out, (0:34:01) Al: I did play a very early alpha of it. Because I’ve not played it since the early access (0:34:07) Al: come out, at this point I’m like, I just need to wait for the 1.0, right? (0:34:10) Kelly: Yeah. Yeah, because I feel like at this point, it’s like if you don’t wait for the 1.0, (0:34:15) Kelly: like what are you getting out of the 1.0 when it comes out? (0:34:17) Al: Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. I will, I will say, I will say, Snacko Devs, listen to me. (0:34:25) Al: We’re good friends, we’ve talked before. (0:34:27) Al: Listen to me now, do not release this in December. (0:34:30) Al: You released the early access last December. (0:34:32) Al: Do not, do not do this. (0:34:35) Al: I beg of you, January, January’s fine. (0:34:39) Al: Do not release your 1.0 in December. (0:34:41) Al: I will cry. (0:34:43) Al: I will cry. (0:34:44) Al: Thank you. (0:34:45) Kelly: - You’re gonna release it December 31st at… (0:34:48) Al: That’s OK, that’s December 31st is fine. (0:34:50) Al: That’s basically January, because I will have recorded all the episodes by then (0:34:54) Al: for the year. It’s not like I need to then rush it, right? (0:34:57) Al: As a 2024 game, it was December the 31st. (0:35:00) Kelly: Also, I just love in their little notes the difference in communication where they literally (0:35:08) Kelly: have screenshots from the Discord talking about part of the updates here. (0:35:10) Al: Mm. Yeah. (0:35:13) Al: That is such a good point. (0:35:14) Al: Snacko Dev is fantastic with communication. (0:35:16) Al: Like they are literally just in the Discord talking to people. (0:35:20) Al: Sunhaven, I have never seen a single one of them talk in the Discord. (0:35:26) Al: Yeah, definitely. (0:35:28) Al: Spiritity have released their Phantom Friends update, which adds a… (0:35:33) Al: You can have your spirits as pets now. (0:35:40) Al: Interesting change. (0:35:40) Kelly: to like follow you around. (0:35:41) Al: If, yeah, yeah, they follow you around and replace your existing… (0:35:48) Al: No, they don’t replace your existing spirit companion. (0:35:50) Al: They add to… (0:35:53) Kelly: I wonder if I should give this game another chance. (0:35:55) Kelly: It seems like they’ve added so much since I last played. (0:35:57) Al: possibly, yeah. (0:36:00) Kelly: But I have enough other farming games. (0:36:08) Kelly: That’s that. That was my issue. (0:36:13) Kelly: Yeah. (0:36:18) Kelly: Now that is a good point, because I feel like I just at its core, (0:36:21) Kelly: I felt kind of listless playing the game. (0:36:25) Kelly: So, yeah, I think you do have a good point. (0:36:27) Kelly: I just like I want to like it so much. (0:36:30) Al: I agree. I also want to like it. Um, but I guess about it, that counts, right? (0:36:36) Kelly: - Yeah, it does have very positive reviews, (0:36:38) Kelly: so obviously other people are enjoying it. (0:36:39) Al: Which is good, which is good. And it’s, you know, yeah. Yeah. Agreed. Agreed. Um, (0:36:39) Kelly: So I’m glad, yeah, I’m glad. (0:36:41) Kelly: ‘Cause I do like, I like the whole concept. (0:36:47) Al: and it’s over 500 reviews as well. So it’s not, it’s not like they’re, they must be getting (0:36:52) Al: enough. That’s, you know, 500 reviews means quite a lot more people buying it, right? Because (0:36:57) Al: most people do not review your game. (0:37:00) Kelly: Yeah, no, I don’t think I think I’ve reviewed like two games (0:37:00) Al: I don’t know if I’ve reviewed any of them on Steam. (0:37:09) Al: They’ve also added new spirits, so that’s what you care about in the game, right? (0:37:15) Al: The spirits. (0:37:16) Al: So there you go. (0:37:19) Al: And the final update is Far Lands. (0:37:22) Al: I’ve released their 0.3 update. (0:37:25) Al: This is the biggest update Far Lands has seen to date. (0:37:30) Al: It adds achievements, which is always a good thing. (0:37:34) Al: Another game we’re about to talk about later on in this episode could have. (0:37:37) Al: That would be great. (0:37:38) Al: Please and thank you. (0:37:42) Kelly: I also love achievements. (0:37:44) Kelly: It’s honestly one of the big things (0:37:45) Kelly: that I really like from not playing (0:37:47) Kelly: as many games on the Switch and switching over to PC. (0:37:48) Al: Mm, yeah, I wonder if, well, almost every game feels a mystery. I wonder if, because (0:37:51) Kelly: I’m like, oh, achievements in every game. (0:37:54) Kelly: How nice. (0:37:59) Kelly: Yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:38:05) Al: obviously they have been slowly getting more and more features as they get a lot, you know, (0:38:10) Al: like the 3DS added a bunch of stuff that other games, other systems had, and then the Switch (0:38:16) Al: called Mostly Modern. (0:38:18) Al: Maybe the next switch you’ll have. (0:38:23) Kelly: Maybe. I always wonder, I didn’t know what the issue was, to be honest, because I know (0:38:28) Kelly: when some people, what is it called, port the games to the Switch, like I know for HoloNet (0:38:34) Kelly: I can’t do video screenshots. I could do plain image screenshots. Yeah, because I think it’s (0:38:37) Al: Yeah, interesting. That, so I believe the video screenshots is something they can disable. (0:38:46) Kelly: about how hard it is for the person porting it to, I guess… Okay. (0:38:51) Al: I don’t think that requires any work on their point. I think it’s more a case of they didn’t (0:38:53) Kelly: Which is, yeah, because it’s weird, because you can record it on every other device. But (0:38:55) Al: want to add that feature. I’m not sure why, but… Yeah. (0:39:03) Kelly: that was also one of the ones where I don’t have achievements, and I know there’s achievements (0:39:06) Kelly: for that game. Yeah. (0:39:07) Al: And some games add them into the game itself, like they’ll add, but that’s a lot of work. (0:39:11) Al: The whole point of the achievements in Steam and stuff is that they’re very easy to do, (0:39:16) Al: because it’s literally just, “Here’s my list of achievements,” and then you put in the code to say (0:39:20) Al: when the achievement is hit. Yeah, because it doesn’t have… Switch doesn’t have an achievement (0:39:22) Kelly: Oh, so that’s the issue is that it’s just hard to add them in on the switch, like the switch doesn’t make it okay. (0:39:29) Al: system. So if you want to have it on the Switch, you have to build it entirely yourself. And it (0:39:34) Kelly: Uh, I’m dumb. I understand now. (0:39:34) Al: And it would be only within game because there are a. (0:39:38) Al: Couple of games that have done that they’ve recreated the achievement system in their own game, but then it only works for that game and it takes a lot of work to do that. (0:39:40) Kelly: Mm hmm. (0:39:42) Kelly: Mm hmm. (0:39:46) Kelly: Yeah, okay, that makes sense. That makes a lot more sense. (0:39:47) Al: Whereas with steam and with Xbox and with PlayStation there’s a piece of code that they can call which just does the achievement for them so. (0:39:54) Kelly: Okay, I knew it was something to do with how it set up, but I never looked into the actual basic why behind it (0:40:02) Al: They’ve added to upgrade system as well. (0:40:04) Al: They’ve added food, they’ve added house upgrade system, they’ve added new (0:40:07) Al: furniture, they’ve added guests and better NPCs, one of which looks like a xenomorph. (0:40:12) Al: Not sure why. (0:40:14) Kelly: I like his jacket. (0:40:14) Al: Legally distinct, legally distinct xenomorph. (0:40:20) Al: Yeah, it looks like a pretty big update. (0:40:21) Al: I haven’t played this game yet. I do want that. (0:40:24) Kelly: Yeah, it’s on my list of games to check out. I just I tried to avoid most early access, honestly. (0:40:33) Al: Good thing we’re not talking about an early access today then (0:40:39) Kelly: Is it generally? (0:40:42) Al: So that’s the game updates. (0:40:43) Al: We now have three new games to talk about, (0:40:47) Al: the first of which actually, no, let’s go the other way around. (0:40:49) Al: Let’s talk about Dreamland Farm first, (0:40:51) Al: because I think this will be the quickest to talk about. (0:40:55) Al: Dreamland Farm. (0:40:56) Al: Since childhood, you’ve dreamed of being close to nature, (0:40:59) Al: but being born and raised in the city stood in the way of that. (0:41:02) Al: The closer you were to adulthood, the more time you spent with your grandma, (0:41:05) Al: who showed you all around her own farm, from crops to berries and mushrooms, (0:41:09) Al: everything she knew, she taught you, she prepared you to be her (0:41:12) Al: successor. I mean that’s just every farming game. I don’t know. I don’t know. And what (0:41:16) Kelly: - Yeah, why do they all do that? (0:41:19) Al: I find really interesting is like, so if you have a farming game, the description should (0:41:25) Al: tell you what’s different about it. Don’t be like, oh, it’s a farming game. It’s like, (0:41:27) Kelly: Yeah. This time it’s your uncle and not your grandpa. (0:41:28) Al: yeah, we know that, right? It’s like, if you have, yeah, exactly, exactly. It’s like, come (0:41:36) Al: on. Let’s not, let’s not pretend. This one looks… (0:41:42) Al: Pretty… I don’t see anything unique in this, personally. (0:41:46) Kelly: I only gave it a cursory glance and it does look pretty. (0:41:52) Kelly: It doesn’t look like it’s breaking any boxes or molds or whatever though. (0:41:56) Al: But equally I also didn’t think about Fields of Mistria and didn’t want to play that until I decided, until it got a lot of buzz and I was like okay it’s time to play this one, you know, like, sometimes you can’t tell without playing it, which is a PR problem, obviously. (0:42:12) Kelly: Which goes back to your point of pointing out the differences (0:42:14) Kelly: and not the similarities. (0:42:19) Kelly: That’s what you need to get in touch with all the devs (0:42:22) Kelly: about is changing their PR management. (0:42:26) Al: I will be your PR. (0:42:29) Al: No, no, I will not. (0:42:32) Al: That is very much a conflict of interests. (0:42:36) Al: This one interestingly, so it’s now it’s on Switch and Xbox, it is not on Steam, which (0:42:41) Al: is interesting. (0:42:42) Kelly: Oh, that feels so backwards. (0:42:43) Al: Yeah, yeah. (0:42:47) Al: I wonder why. (0:42:48) Kelly: I wonder right too, especially if it’s on x. (0:42:49) Al: Yeah, because it’s not like it’s they had an exclusivity deal with Switch, because then (0:42:54) Al: and they wouldn’t be on Xbox. (0:42:57) Al: And the Xbox version did come out like a week after the Switch version. (0:43:01) Al: That’s not long enough for it to be an exclusivity. (0:43:04) Kelly: - No. (laughs) (0:43:04) Al: So yeah, weird. (0:43:07) Al: I don’t know, I’ll keep an eye on it. (0:43:09) Kelly: Hopefully it’s good. (0:43:09) Kelly: Hopefully they got something unique in it. (0:43:11) Al: Yeah, yeah, hopefully. (0:43:13) Al: Hopefully. (0:43:14) Al: It’s 10 pounds. (0:43:16) Al: Is it 15 dollars? (0:43:18) Al: Probably. (0:43:20) Kelly: Probably something like that, yeah. (0:43:22) Al: So it feels cheap enough to like buy it and play it. (0:43:26) Al: And if you’re not bothered by it, then it’s not the end of the world sort of thing. (0:43:30) Al: Next we have RATOPIA. (0:43:33) Al: RATOPIA. (0:43:35) Al: I keep wanting to say RATOPIA, but it’s only one T, so it’s definitely RATOPIA. (0:43:38) Kelly: Uh, to be fair, I say rat topia (0:43:41) Al: Yeah, but there’s no second T. (0:43:42) Kelly: Well, he sounds better I know but it’s funner to say that way (0:43:47) Kelly: For the podcast, I will say rat topia (0:43:50) Al: RATOPIA. RATOPIA is a new game that is combined first of all, a new game, come on. What is (0:44:01) Al: that? I just feel like sometimes I feel like this this podcast is just me editing and critiquing (0:44:07) Al: the descriptions of games. Is a new game. Yeah, we know that. Don’t add that in. Also (0:44:13) Al: just a point, you don’t need to put your name in the description because your name is elsewhere (0:44:17) Al: on the page, right? Just right. (0:44:19) Kelly: Uh, you sound like somebody’s like third grade English teacher critiquing their (0:44:20)

(soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta The footage from a personal camcorder is recovered by the U.S. Department of Defense in the area "formerly known as Central Park", bearing a disclaimer stating multiple sightings of a case designated "Cloverfield". The camera contains two sets of recordings, mixed together. The earlier footage, recorded on April 27, 2008, shows Robert "Rob" Hawkins waking up with Elizabeth "Beth" McIntyre in her father's apartment above Columbus Circle before embarking on a date across New York City and Coney Island. On May 22, 2008, Rob's brother Jason and Jason's girlfriend Lily Ford, throw a farewell party, celebrating Rob's new job. Jason gets Rob's best friend, Hudson "Hud" Platt, to film testimonials for Rob during the party. Beth, whose feelings are hurt because Rob never called her back after their one night together, brings another man to the party. Beth and Rob argue, and she leaves shortly before a massive earthquake occurs, causing a brief citywide power outage; the local news reports a capsized oil tanker near Liberty Island. From the roof, the partygoers witness an explosion in the distance and flee as flaming debris flies in their direction. As the partygoers leave the building, the severed head of the Statue of Liberty is hurled into the street. In the chaos, Hud records an enormous creature several blocks away collapsing the Woolworth Building before taking cover in a convenience store. When the group attempts to evacuate Manhattan, the creature's tail destroys the Brooklyn Bridge, killing Jason. News reports show the Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division attacking the monster and smaller parasitic creatures that fall off its body. Rob receives a message from Beth, who is trapped in her apartment at the Time Warner Center. Rob, followed by Hud, Lily, and Marlena Diamond, venture into Midtown Manhattan to rescue her. They find themselves in a battle between the creature and military, run into the subway, and are attacked by the parasites. While saving Hud, Marlena is bitten by one of the creatures. The four escape the subway and enter an underground mall where they are found by soldiers and taken to a command center nearby. When Marlena begins to bleed from her eyes, she is forcibly taken to a field hospital and explodes. Rob, still intending to save Beth, persuades one of the military commanders to let them go. He is informed when the last evacuation helicopter will depart before the military executes its "Hammer Down Protocol", which will destroy Manhattan to kill the monster. The surviving group travels to Beth's apartment building leaning on a neighboring skyscraper. After crossing roofs from the other building, the group finds Beth impaled on exposed rebar. They free her and make their way to the evacuation site at Grand Central Terminal, where they encounter the creature again. Lily is first rushed into a first helicopter to escape before Rob, Beth, and Hud are taken away in a second helicopter and witness the creature being heavily bombed. The creature remains unfazed and lunges out of the smoke, hitting the second helicopter, and causing it to crash in Central Park, killing all the occupants except Rob, Beth, and Hud.

Wealthy business owners and landlords are vilified. Yet, wealthy actors, athletes, and singers are praised. This makes zero sense. Businesses and landlords provide essential services; entertainers don't. The White House recently published a “rent control light” plan. It's a bad idea and has almost zero chance of passing a divided Congress. I critique it. Hear my in-person sit-down interview the Liberland President, Vit Jedlicka. This is get rich education.   Keith Weinhold 00:01:29  Welcome to Greece. From Dubrovnik, Croatia, to Dublin, Ohio, and across 188 nations worldwide. I'm Keith Weinhold than you are inside episode 512 of get Rich education. You can set up your life so that you stop using your time to make money. Use the bank's money to make money. People come from scarcity families, just like I did with a scarcity mindset to think all debt is bad. Hang off debt won't make you wealthy. You don't build wealth. So by the time you reach age 62, you think, hey, I just paid off my last debt and now I can retire. It doesn't work that way. Well, why couldn't you retire sooner? Sheesh. So what do people mistakenly do? They end up working their whole life for people that have debt. Successful business owners and real estate investors carry debt.   Keith Weinhold 00:02:29  That's how they can own so much productivity and so many assets. And you know what's interesting here? Business owners and real estate moguls, they're the ones that often seem to be vilified, criticized, ridiculed for obtaining wealth when they took risks, took out loans and provided jobs or housing for others, yet Yet at the same time, somehow actors, athletes and singers are all praised for obtaining wealth as a performing artist. That makes zero sense. Why would you criticize a successful business owner like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos? Bezos probably made your life distinctly better by offering you convenient shopping for anything. Protein bars with a few clicks, free shipping, and pioneering drone delivery. A landlord is often vilified. Most landlords are mom and pop types that aren't even that wealthy. But even if they were, as long as they're not a slumlord, I mean, they took on risk debt, operating expenses, and being on call 24 over seven in order to provide others with housing. So with Bezos types and landlords, we're talking about taking risk to provide society with essentials like food and housing.   Keith Weinhold 00:03:58  And while the business owners get vilified baselessly performing artists like actors, athletes and singers do not. Yet they merely provide entertainment to society. Now I like entertainment and I follow sports to the NFL. Major League Baseball, the NBA. But their services are not essential. Take a movie actor. They get paid well for pretending to be somebody else. Consider how absurd that sounds. And yet they're praised for obtaining wealth from doing that. So this is really backwards. And, you know, I think that a lot of this resentment for business owners is that you can't really see what they do for you. Like, you can a performer that's on the front stage, like Beyonce or Lizzo or Taylor Swift, Business owners, real estate investors, they're on the back stage. And what an entertainer does front stage that is highly visible. I mean, that's my best guess about why this is. And a lot of the time it just comes back to these primordial human emotions like resentment and jealousy and envy. There is no reason to criticize the rich just solely for being wealthy Because deep down, it's all where we want to be.   Keith Weinhold 00:05:21  Anyway, how is Bezos bad and Lizzo good? I don't get it, but it's been that way for a while now. When you look at surveys of institutions that are most trusted over time, and it's been pretty much the same these past few decades, what's at the top of the polls are small businesses. People say that they're trusting of small businesses in your rental property. Business surely counts here. Small businesses trusted more than institutions like the media or politicians. So I encourage you on social media and wherever else to support small businesses. And it's kind of funny how friends they often might not put a like on your small business, though they say that they trust them and that they resent large businesses, you know? Then that friend turns right around and supports Apple, Coca-Cola, and Starbucks. people say they trust small business, but so often then they go patronize large businesses. Nothing wrong with patronizing large businesses, but you're just not doing what you're saying. So my point is, don't resent anyone just for financial success and consider outwardly supporting small businesses.   Keith Weinhold 00:06:40  If you indeed put a lot of trust in them yourself, just like much of America says that they do. Now, is there a movement afoot to disenfranchise big wealthy business owners or big landlords. I mean, we're talking about these very people that are resented. Well, one way is with rent control, that is capping the amount of rent that landlords can charge. Now, since Covid hit in March of 2020. Apartment rents are up 18% and single family rents are up 25%. Okay. Those are cumulative figures over this four plus year stretch. And that's actually not that much. It's about 5% a year. And now sure, political news has been like galactic big this month with the Trump shooting and the Biden drop out and the Kamala Harris endorsement as a Democratic frontrunner. And we rarely talk politics here for a few reasons. Number one, it's divisive. People lose their minds. Secondly, speculation is cheap. So much of politics is speculating on what might happen in the future. Well, there's one known here.   Keith Weinhold 00:08:01  Whether you like it or not, expect six more months of President Biden. And thirdly, politics is overblown. Its importance is inflated. A president rarely changes your life. But the good news in this is that you can your autonomy, your freedom, your decisions. You can change your life. So to put the politics aside, let's stick to a one issue subject. The white House revealed published what I call a rent control lite plan earlier this month. And to give some credit first, this the same plan it also repurposes publicly and to build more affordable housing. I sent you a link to the whole thing in our newsletter last week. Well, this rent control lite thing has almost zero chance of becoming law. VP Kamala Harris endorsed it on ex. President Trump would kill it even if it's revived under the next president. It has no realistic shot of passing a divided Congress. But let's look at this anyway. What was proposed is that if a property owner increases rent more than 5% annually, it would reduce tax incentives for large landlords.   Keith Weinhold 00:09:23  I'll tell you what large landlords are in a moment. Now, you could still increase rent by more than 5%. It would just reduce the federal tax breaks and it would have lasted for only two years. And the reason the white House put this proposal together for just two years is as a bridge to a time when more homes are expected to be built. I mean, that's the real intent here. And importantly, this all would have only applied to owners of 50 plus units. So that's mostly for apartment owners. Single family rental owners would be largely untouched, but consider how apartment owners could have lost their accelerated depreciation benefit, also known as their cost segregation. And note that I'm already talking about this rent control light proposal in the past tense, not the present tense, because this whole thing, it's just a bunch of virtue signaling to try to show that something is being done to rein in housing inflation. Well, this is really odd and awkward since the inflation came from the government in the first place.   Keith Weinhold 00:10:30  I mean, sheesh, this is like shooting someone in the foot and then trying to get praise for bandaging the victim that you just shot. Well, the federal government, they just don't do rent control on this level at all. They haven't. In fact, the feds haven't regulated rents on private buildings since World War two. So this really isn't a thing, but it just brings to light that rent control is a bad idea. It puts a cap on risk. Time after time after time. History shows us that it makes developers stop building. Now, the white House plan did have a carve out for new builds. Also, what this does is that landlords have no incentive to improve property. That's why it reduces housing supply, which is already low, and it creates long term dilapidated living conditions, like I touched on here just a couple episodes ago. But how weird to even make such an ill advised proposal. I mean, look, if government puts a price cap of $2 on a gallon of milk, then dairies will stop producing milk.   Keith Weinhold 00:11:41  Milk shelves are going to be empty. It's like in communist countries. This is why you saw photos of bread lines. When there are price controls, then manufacturers don't produce. And just the same, landlords would stop providing housing. If I didn't put a fine enough point on this yet. President Obama's top economist, Jason Furman. He probably said it best in the Washington Post. Furman says, quote, rent control has been about as disgraced as any economic policy in the toolkit. The idea that we'd be reviving and expanding it will ultimately make our housing supply problems worse, not better. End quote from President Obama's top economist 94% of economists agreed that rent control reduces quality and quantity of housing available. It is the most effective way to destroy a city. Aside from bombing it, what an ill conceived plan to regulate rents. That's rent control, but the most dangerous drinking game of 2024 that is still sipping at every mention of the interest rate lock in effect on a real estate or economics podcast. Though it's been two plus years since they made their dramatic rise.   Keith Weinhold 00:13:05  Many are still transfixed on mortgage rates. They recently hit a five month low below 7%, and a lot of people still expect mortgage rates to fall between today and next year, since inflation has now plunged from a high of 9.1% two years ago, down to 3% now, the Federal Reserve has held rates steady for more than a year now, and most don't expect any change either when they meet in two days. But be ready. Be prepared when mortgage rates fall substantially. Millions more buyers will qualify to buy a home, and this could substantially stoke housing demand and lift housing prices further. Now last week on the show, you heard gray investment coach narration. I discuss Libre land libre, land libre land. Earlier this month, I visited the exhibit hall at an event called FreedomFest. I saw the library and booth and I recognized their name, and I congratulated the people there in the booth. On that, the fact that I have heard of Liberland before, that's somewhat of a compliment to them. It shows me that they're doing something right, liberal, and is a small piece of land between Serbia and Croatia in Eastern Europe, and it apparently hasn't been claimed by any other nation for decades.   Keith Weinhold 00:14:32  The name Liberland, and I think it's easy to remember because it sounds like liberty. So that's how you pronounce it. Well, I got to talking to some of their representatives at the exhibit hall. They're all smart people, but there was no one person that had all the answers I was looking for. So I requested to speak with the president of Liberland. And about two hours later we made that happen. So today, shortly you will hear Liberland President Vit Jedlicka and I together. Now, the United Nations doesn't yet recognize Libya and all. Ask the president if other nations recognize it. Wikipedia calls liberal and a micro nation. It is seven square kilometers. That's almost three square miles. It's mostly forested. I don't believe there are any mountains there that I can see in the photos. It has Danube river frontage and just a few people there. The Danube river frontage is key because it contains an island that belongs to Leon, and also the Danube is key because it also connects to the Black Sea.   Keith Weinhold 00:15:40  And we'll see if it can be a tax free haven, which is apparently the intent. You might be able to see this working when you compare it to micro nations like Monaco and Liechtenstein. Some journalists have been skeptical about libre land. You'll see how I approach it with the president shortly. He champions laissez faire capitalism. Laissez faire means a minimal government. They're also making the new nation's laws transparent on the blockchain and an economy based on cryptocurrency. As for liberalized population, by March of this year, liberalism had 1200 registered citizens who had paid up to $10,000 for labor and passports, but fewer actually living in the nation now, working on it and building it. Neighbouring Croatia has at times been hostile and blocked off access to libre land. These past few years, you will hear some background noise in President Witte and his upcoming interview. So I ask for your attention and patience there and for all. We are in an exhibit hall at a conference. I'll just call him whit in the interview. And what does his day to day look like? He travels globally a lot, often trying to get into international diplomatic and friendship agreements.   Keith Weinhold 00:17:01  But how do you just adopt statehood out of nothing? That's what's interesting here. Now, when he describes libre land to me, you can't see it here in the audio only. But he often points to Liberty Island, an island on the Danube river that's part of Liberty. And does having a free nation mean that you have the freedom to do whatever you want on your land, or they're soon going to be hos there? I'll ask him that very question, literally. President and I coming up here shortly. First, as for more, I suppose, a familiar land here in the US. You can't make any money from the rental property that you don't own. We are here to help get you started being profitable that way. And it's free. Get some of those. Real estate pays five ways properties. Then we have access to a good number of them here at great a good variety, different property types, different geographies. But at times I'm asked where is the real estate opportunity today in this real estate market, with higher prices, higher rents normalize interest rates, higher operating expenses and low housing supply? Really the opportunity is in affordable housing.   Keith Weinhold 00:18:25  If I could just put two words to it. That's the short answer of affordable housing. Like I often say, provide housing that's clean, safe, affordable and functional in today's market really emphasizes the affordable. That's where the sustainable demand is. Since so many want to be first time homebuyers are priced out of the market currently, it's like a dam that's waiting to break once interest rates go lower compared to a year ago, America has a lower proportion of homeowners and more renters, and the renter numbers just look to keep increasing due to that low affordability. And also this surge of immigrants from the past year or so. That is why you want to own affordable rental housing now. Affordable housing really that can mean a few things in a physical form. That could mean mobile home parks, single family homes, duplexes to fourplex or larger apartment buildings, but in any case, an income producing asset. Do you know what that does for you? That's like an employee that's working for you 24 over seven and without the personality problems, and they never call in sick.   Keith Weinhold 00:19:40  And when you're looking for a property, it's easier to screen properties that it is higher in screen employees. The first one is in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. These are the places where the numbers work, and Arkansas has been named the most landlord friendly of all 50 states. It is four bed, two bath purchase price of 288 K and a rent of $2,200. Good numbers for a new build there. It's 1500 and 50ft². The second property, also a new build, is in Pinson, Alabama that's just northeast of Birmingham. And this single family rental is three bed, two bath. The purchase price is 303 K, the rent is $2,000, it's 1400 and eight square feet.   Keith Weinhold 00:22:14  And that rent to price ratio that's not as good as the first one in Arkansas. Don't quit your day dream.   Keith Weinhold 00:25:11  Hey. Welcome back to get rich action. We're talking with someone that's going to explain a different subject to us. We're talking about starting up and the potential new nation. I was the president of that nation called Libre, Leon, I was there. President Witt, welcome in. Good to meet you. It's so good to have you here. And, you know, interestingly, we met at an event called Freedom Fest. So this is potentially so parallel with that as you're looking to develop your own nation now at a place like Freedom Fest, I think we have a lot of people that have a certain set of opinions, and a lot of people at a place like Freedom Fest, where you champion ideals, would probably love to tell you how they would like changes to be made in the United States. But I think if you ask that same person, okay, what if you begin with a clean slate? How would you begin a nation anew, but you're actually trying to do that? So tell us about Libber Land.   Keith Weinhold 00:26:04  It's pretty.   Vit Jedlicka 00:26:05  Exciting to.   Robert Helms 00:26:06  Hear Kennedy.   Vit Jedlicka 00:26:07  The candidate for president, talking about his plans to utilize blockchain to make the country transparent and or functioning. Libra is, I would say, at least 5 to 10 years ahead of any other nation states. And utilizing that, we are combining the best technology that is out there with the best ideas, ideology that is out there, which is, of course, libertarianism, making sure that the society as free as possible within some framework of basic rules. So this is exactly what we're doing. And we were looking for a piece of land to manifest that in physical world. And here we go. It's so liberal and it's a beautiful piece of land between Russia and Serbia that was not claimed by any other country for more than 35 years. We came there, we struggled with like we actually took nine years to even get inside of it properly. And now we're building and living there for more than a year.   Keith Weinhold 00:26:58  So this seven square kilometer plot of land between Croatia and Serbia, that is on the Danube floodplain, you've got frontage on the Danube river, even an island and the Danube river here in this Start-Up nation, if you will, of libre land.   Keith Weinhold 00:27:14  Really, as I've come to understand it, one real goal of liberalism is just to have any nation in the world recognize it as its own sovereign nation.   Vit Jedlicka 00:27:25  We actually got a couple countries to write or sign a regular deals, like with other states. We started with Somaliland, which was at the time unrecognized country. It's fully functional. Interesting story. It's actually former Peace of Somalia, which got independence like 25 years ago. And they're fairly finally prosperous and functioning, even without any recognition by any other country in the world. Now, they got recently recognized by Ethiopia. We followed up with Haiti agreement. We were signing a couple more agreements. Right now, I'm actually heading to one of the African countries to sign some friendship agreement. So it's not that the other countries don't recognize us now. We're working hard on diplomacy. You know, we have diplomatic relations with places like El Salvador, where we were on official diplomatic visits. So, of course, traditional form of recognition is one of our priorities.   Vit Jedlicka 00:28:13  But it's not the number one priority, really. Our number one priority is to finish a very close, a whole model of statehood and utilize the 745,000 people that applied for citizenship, for really real building of the country itself and the nation.   Keith Weinhold 00:28:31  Some recognition is coming slowly, but pulling back a bigger picture. Why do this? Why take this on? Why start your own nation?   Vit Jedlicka 00:28:39  Why not? I think leading by a good example is the best way to do things like talking about liberty. I did a lot of educational work on explaining people why liberty works, but it's much better to do things in the practical terms.   Keith Weinhold 00:28:53  Now, what's interesting is, you know, we've talked about freedom and the ideals of freedom earlier. This freedom mean freedom to do whatever you want.   Vit Jedlicka 00:29:03  You know, within some boundaries, of course, as long as you don't breach other people's freedoms and you have to find the right set up. And but right now, the problem with the current society is that there are so many regulations, you don't even know what you're reaching, and you're usually not reaching anybody's property or anybody.   Vit Jedlicka 00:29:20  It's just a bunch of stupid regulations that make your life tough. You cannot do business. You cannot even help your community. It's funny what kind of stuff we are dealing with in Croatia right now. There is a mosquito calamity in the neighborhood around Libre land and the local municipality don't have money to fix it. And they also don't let us to fix it because you have to have special license for fixing it. So everybody is suffering under the mosquito calamity, which is California.   Keith Weinhold 00:29:47  Okay, so that's an example of overregulation, potentially too many laws. You just brought up one of the limits of freedom, potentially. Well, we don't want people to be able to do anything or therefore they might be.   Vit Jedlicka 00:29:57  Able to hurt or to.   Keith Weinhold 00:29:58  Harm another person, but therefore that would be some sort of of law. And then there would be some need to sort of enforce that. So how does a start up country that wants to be a free nation, you know, how do you meet needs like laws and enforcement and perhaps a judicial process.   Vit Jedlicka 00:30:16  Or do you have a standard framework for the country? There is now a newly elected Congress. It's still a test election, but it has been already elected according to all the principles that the blockchain is bringing full transparency, immutability. It happens within the split of second of the very minimal cost. So all these things are actually already happening, and the Congress will now take all the laws that were prepared by the Preparatory Committee. And only if we have the whole framework of the laws necessary to run a state. I have 250 pages of regulations, very simple framework, which already allows a society to function quite well. And I would like to keep it that way. You know, keep the Constitution at the, let's say, the 20 pages and another 230 pages of different laws that define the the ways that the society should work. And anybody basically allowed to read all the regulations in the country within one day. It's not like here, right in the US.   Keith Weinhold 00:31:10  Yes. But its population grows, is the infrastructure grows, is more complicated, needs must be met.   Keith Weinhold 00:31:16  The size of government invariably and inevitably seems to expand with all existing nations in the world. I think the UN recognizes 193 sovereign nations currently. How do you keep the size of government from expanding over the long term in Libya?   Vit Jedlicka 00:31:32  It's a challenge. Of course, but the way we keep it is the way that there is only one institution that can make new laws, and it's kind of a corporate governance of liberalism. But that governance is in check by three other institutions that can get rid of the laws. The first and most important one is public veto. So majority of citizens can veto any law or regulations that they don't like. Second one is the Constitutional Court. So the Constitutional Court looks into the law if it basically is only focused on security and justice or diplomacy, so that the state shouldn't legislate on other things, really let other things to the private sector. So the Constitutional Court strictly looks if it adheres to that. That's another important institution. Then there is something like House of Lords of liberal minded, who can also veto the laws that the corporate governance the Congress actually creates.   Vit Jedlicka 00:32:23  So one institution to make laws and three institutions to get rid of it.   Keith Weinhold 00:32:28  Else about what's there now, the natural resources, the population and the infrastructure.   Vit Jedlicka 00:32:33  Well, that's the beautiful territory with the island next to liberal land. This is part of liberal land. It's called Liberty Island. It's a long, beautiful sandy beach. Right now, the under construction, there is 24, three houses in this area. So it will be one of the third thing will be the tourism. And we need to be able to host the visitors. We are planning two major music festivals and conferences in the summer, which will take place in August and in September. Of course, you're very well invited. We want to promote the tourism in Berlin, but also in the whole region. The biggest resorts. And it's like that with any country that is prosperous around the world. Be it Hong Kong or Singapore, is not the natural resources. It's the capacity of people to freely make, trade and do business.   Keith Weinhold 00:33:20  You're right.   Keith Weinhold 00:33:20  In fact, a place like yes, Hong Kong or Singapore or even Japan itself have been exemplary of that. A place can be prosperous without having many natural resources. It's truly about the ingenuity of the people we talk about. The people tell us more about the population.   Vit Jedlicka 00:33:35  The population. Right now we've got 800,000 people, almost that sign up for citizenship, which is a huge pipeline. I think the reasonable like ideal population of Liberal would be around 140,000. So we cannot even accept everybody to physically live in liberal land because we would be so overpopulated. Right now we've got some thousand citizens and 6500 residents that basically went through the pipeline, and there is a couple dozens of people living on the territory of liberal lands and working and building stuff. So it's kind of fun to see that initial development. very early into the development. There is still a quite a bit of obstacles to really speed up the development of the brand, mainly installed by Croatia, but we're very happy that after all these years we're able to actually be there physically and develop stuff.   Vit Jedlicka 00:34:23  So we're building a small hospital. There are seven construction workers that take care of it. We're also building the Treehouse resort. There is another ten guys working on that, and that there is a bunch of people that came to settle and they're helping with some stuff for the site. And then there is around 150 people that live around Liberal and that are connected and are supporting the movement. Well.   Keith Weinhold 00:34:44  Now we're a real estate platform. We're going to have both public land and privately.   Vit Jedlicka 00:34:50  Every land is private, in a sense. In labor land. The deal is that right now, people can actually come to the land and claim piece of land if they have enough merit. There is are the the shares of liberal land and can actually not even exchange them if they just have them. They have the right to settle things for fun, which is kind of exciting even though there are all these obstacles. But we're helping people to get over them and get the development of the country going as fast as possible.   Keith Weinhold 00:35:16  Can a person purchase merits or purchase land in labor land right now?   Vit Jedlicka 00:35:21  Anybody that donates to Libre land on the website gets the merits.   Keith Weinhold 00:35:26  Are there going to be things like Hoa's in Libre land? Is that something that you foresee? What is actually homeowners associations where you have neighborhoods and boards in those neighborhoods where you know they need to approve of things like, hey, you can only paint your home for different colors, and you need to mow your grass within every two weeks.   Vit Jedlicka 00:35:46  Well, that surely there will be different types of associations and liberal. We're not going to force one or the other type. This property development here on Liberty Island, the three houses and this area will be kind of association of sort. We want to have 24 people that that invest into the tree house, and they would act as a community. They will help each other, but they will also have the place to visitors. To really make sure that we have a good initial settlement for the permanent population. And I would like every single one of these guys to like some nice story behind how they came to live and then why they're building a house there. We want to make a reality TV show out of it as soon as possible as well.   Keith Weinhold 00:36:28  What about currency? The euro is used in the area. But you mentioned blockchain earlier, and I don't think you plan on using the euro in liberally. Tell us about that. We don't do.   Vit Jedlicka 00:36:38  That. We use liberal and dolar. We use liberal and merit. Those are the main currencies that are tied with our blockchain. And the pound dollar was launched on exchanges three months ago, reading quite nicely, steadily at 2 USD per $1 billion. So this is like also demanded currency by our suppliers.   Keith Weinhold 00:36:56  Is it a cryptocurrency? Yes.   Vit Jedlicka 00:36:58  It's just my own currency of our blockchain. Our blockchain is standalone. It's not depending on any other blockchain. Our citizens are the one ones that securely network and run the network. They run the servers. Every single citizen in Lebanon has the right to run the run the network. That's kind of all we know. We're not really being dependent on any other network like Ethereum or Polkadot. We are simply running our own thing with its own main token. The main token is liberal dollar, but the main political token is liberal and varied, and that also comes with the political voting rights.   Keith Weinhold 00:37:32  Do you foresee there being a future rental property market on libre land?   Vit Jedlicka 00:37:39  Oh, of course, of all these, all these three houses are meant to be for rental for bigger events or team building. So this is something that is happening right now, and I wish we could have at least, you know, 50 bedrooms there by the end of summer.   Keith Weinhold 00:37:54  You know, we talked about how society might work on liberally, and why don't we pull back a bit more and talk about that physical geography, because you chose an area that's basically on the Danube floodplain. So it's probably pretty fertile and it's near some other populated nations. But of course, there are some areas of the world that no one else is claiming. Tell us about how you chose this area over. All the others in the.   Vit Jedlicka 00:38:16  Area was in the most reasonable place, I would say, between the two countries that had war, and they learned to sort out things in a peaceful way. And, you know, Antarctica is also on claim, but you don't want to stay there.   Vit Jedlicka 00:38:27  It's for freezing, right? This particular place is heart shaped. It's seven square kilometers. It was a culturally similar environment to where I was born, so I was considering it as a perfect place to start. And you can fit.   Keith Weinhold 00:38:39  You can get all four seasons in Libre land. What else should one know about Libre land that they come approach you with questions about what do people really want to hear about?   Vit Jedlicka 00:38:50  They of course are interested in the sport. They want to see how what kind of utility does it have? They're a bunch of countries where you can use it to get in and out, which is kind of cool. But the main utility for Americans, for example, is that they use it on crypto exchanges, or they use it with different financial institutions as a second passport. If the US passport is not good for that, it's a great membership club, you know, in the country that is just being born. And and it's a great social gathering. Think about this. 35,000 Americans that sign up for citizenship as well.   Vit Jedlicka 00:39:22  We've got a small consulate in every bigger state, or at least a representative person. The branch, for example, here is representing liberals in Washington, D.C. so we've got a nice network of nice guys all around the place, and then a potential big supportive network with all of these people that sign up for citizenship.   Keith Weinhold 00:39:41  Now, how do you get the word out about libertarians so that people can get interested? Of course, we are an example of this right now, as our audience is learning about liberal land and the pros and cons of this concept of a potential condition. How do others learn about it?   Vit Jedlicka 00:39:55  There were articles written in Liberal, and I believe in more than 40,000 different medias actually, so we were pretty heavily covered in past. I believe more than 1 or 2 billion people learned about it through the media outreach, but the word is also spreading from person to person. Like people like it. They get on board their friends, their families. It's kind of exciting to see that.   Keith Weinhold 00:40:18  What about the language in the culture that you see developing here? Will it feel European just based on its geographic proximity? Is that what you foresee, or does it have more to do with where the inhabitants come from?   Vit Jedlicka 00:40:31  The English, of course, is number one language, but we are also developing liberal English out of all the mistakes that we make in English, that makes the language a little bit difficult to learn and understand.   Keith Weinhold 00:40:41  Americans have to learn English.   Vit Jedlicka 00:40:43  We've got a quite nice culture there, which is, of course mixture of the local Slavic culture with this international make sense nowadays, people, a lot of people from Scandinavia that are moving in. I think we've got a very good German group now coming. There is quite a few Americans that are being involved. It's quite difficult, for example, for Americans to stay liberal. And right now we have to improve our relationship with Croatia because Americans are being banned from actually, for some strange reason.   Keith Weinhold 00:41:15  Okay, still some antagonism with your neighbor Croatia. That's kind of.   Vit Jedlicka 00:41:20  The situation.   Keith Weinhold 00:41:20  In Croatia has created some access problems as well. Tell us about that.   Vit Jedlicka 00:41:25  Well, there's been solved. Last year we when we we we came in to liberalize with more than 60 people at the same time. So they had no means of preventing that access. And since that time actually have free entry in an hour of liberalized. We have a small border crossing there with the with the Croatian police and kind of agreement that we can pass in and out, which is nice.   Keith Weinhold 00:41:46  Try to keep things smooth with Croatia there on the one side of Liberal and here this new Start-Up nation. And we're talking with president Vit here of Liberal. And are there any last things that people need to know about liberalism before I ask how they can go to your website and learn more? Are there any just other last things I think we should know?   Vit Jedlicka 00:42:05  It's a great opportunity to visit now with these two festivals. Those are nice social gatherings. It's the floating metal festival in August. That's the way.   Keith Weinhold 00:42:14  Man. Like the Burning Man.   Vit Jedlicka 00:42:15  Yeah, about the float. That's floating, man. Because we're on Danube. And then there is the Liverpool Echo, which is a major international festival that has moved on this year, which is based on an article, a famous Mexican festival that will be a probably the biggest cultural event this year.   Keith Weinhold 00:42:33  Well, literally. And be a success if it is a net exporter rather than a net importer, because it's difficult to have sectors for everything from industry to agriculture in Beyblade.   Vit Jedlicka 00:42:46  Well, our biggest export is freedom. Ideas like it's like Chile spreading like wildfire. think about it. Like for two months we had the biggest immigration in the world. We go to the United States, where there was more people applying for citizenship of liberal. And then there were applicants for green cards in the United States. The idea itself, it's something that the time has come. There is amazing interest in building new countries, building free countries. And right now I can see that we are on the right track when people like Canada are pushing for transparency through blockchain, because we know what they are talking about. We have already done it and we are applying it in the real world.   Keith Weinhold 00:43:24  Well, it's an interesting experiment in this way. You, the listener of the viewer, you can follow it as an experiment, as an example of what to not do or what to do as live land develops. Why don't you let our audience know how they can learn more about it?   Vit Jedlicka 00:43:42  Fairly easy to apply for citizenship.   Vit Jedlicka 00:43:44  You can first become your resident and then come and help some different means. Or you just directly go for the citizenship. It's an investment of $10,000 or donation of $10,000. And you become a member of of our community with the passport and with the right contacts to the right people. That will really help you to get the best out of the community.   Keith Weinhold 00:44:04  Well, I don't have a great chat with a national president every day, but I sure did today. Thanks so much for your time. It's been interesting learning about liberalism. Thank you very much.   Vit Jedlicka 00:44:15  Made me think UK and I hope to see you a liberal one.   Keith Weinhold 00:44:17  Maybe you will. It sounds like a donation of ten K gets you a liberal and passport. Like I said earlier, as of March 1200 people had paid up to that amount for the passport. Music festivals and conferences in Libya. In the next few months, that could be a way to check it out. Now, it's certainly something I'd need to know more about before I could either endorse it or reject it.   Keith Weinhold 00:44:48  Citizenship in Libya planned to get more of the skeptic side. The criticism I would visit the Libyan Wikipedia page and get ready for some dismissal of its diplomatic recognition there. Then you can visit Libre Land Oregon, learn more about citizenship status, the passport actually helping with the construction of the territory and earning libre land merits, which is a cryptocurrency. If you find it interesting, it's a matter for you to do some deep due diligence on next week. The King of Commercial Real Estate will be here with us. Until then, host Keith Wendell. Imagine you are on a ferry slowly approaching Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The sky is a brilliant blue with just a few clouds drifting overhead. There's a cool breeze; it's hitting your face, and the smell of salt from the ocean water is around you. To your right is the New York City skyline. Lower Manhattan is magical with all of its high rises, but nothing compares to the Statue of Liberty ahead of you. She's massive! In fact, if she were a building, she'd be about 20 stories high. Being in front of her, Lady Liberty is surreal because she's so well-known and such a powerful symbol of hope, freedom, and democracy. She's also a symbol of the United States, but what's her story? In today's lesson, you're going to hear a short story about the Statue of Liberty. In it, you'll hear ten irregular past tense verbs. Here they are: 1. to be 2. to take 3. to break 4. to bring 5. to build 6. to stand 7. to make 8. to flee 9. to see 10. to lead Make sure to subscribe for more English lessons!: https://podcast.americanenglishpodcast.com // Audio Lessons ABOUT ______ ○ English Idioms:

fWotD Episode 2617: Statue of Liberty Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 4 July 2024 is Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, within New York City. The copper statue, a gift to the U. S. from the people of France, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886.The statue is a figure of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. She holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and in her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776, in Roman numerals), the date of the U. S. Declaration of Independence. A broken chain and shackle lie at her feet as she walks forward, commemorating the national abolition of slavery following the American Civil War. After its dedication the statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States, being subsequently seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.The idea for the statue was born in 1865, when the French historian and abolitionist Édouard de Laboulaye proposed a monument to commemorate the upcoming centennial of U. S. independence (1876), the perseverance of American democracy and the liberation of the nation's slaves. The Franco-Prussian War delayed progress until 1875, when Laboulaye proposed that the people of France finance the statue and the United States provide the site and build the pedestal. Bartholdi completed the head and the torch-bearing arm before the statue was fully designed, and these pieces were exhibited for publicity at international expositions. The torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and in Madison Square Park in Manhattan from 1876 to 1882. Fundraising proved difficult, especially for the Americans, and by 1885 work on the pedestal was threatened by lack of funds. Publisher Joseph Pulitzer, of the New York World, started a drive for donations to finish the project and attracted more than 120,000 contributors, most of whom gave less than a dollar (equivalent to $34 in 2023). The statue was built in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. The statue's completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a dedication ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland. The statue was administered by the United States Lighthouse Board until 1901 and then by the Department of War; since 1933, it has been maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, and is a major tourist attraction. Limited numbers of visitors can access the rim of the pedestal and the interior of the statue's crown from within; public access to the torch has been barred since 1916.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:33 UTC on Thursday, 4 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Statue of Liberty on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

O almeno riuscì a dare proprio quest'impressione.

Bible Reading: Matthew 11:28-30; John 6:37-40The wind lashed at Sam's hair, and salt water splashed on his face as the boat approached Liberty Island in New York Harbor. "Look! There she is," Sam said, pointing to the Statue of Liberty. He stood at the rail as they got closer."I've heard this area called the Gateway to Freedom," Grandma said as the boat docked. "Isn't the Statue of Liberty beautiful?" "My grandparents certainly thought so," said Grandpa. "I remember them telling me what it was like to come to America from the Netherlands. They said the Statue of Liberty was the first sight to welcome them to a new land.""I'll bet they were glad to get here," said Sam.Grandpa nodded. "Yes, they were. They were also glad when they became citizens of this country a few years later.""Do you know the poem written on a plaque at the base of the statue?" Sam asked. "Mrs. Croy had our class memorize part of it. It says, 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.'" Sam looked up at the top of the statue. "Mrs. Croy says there are still lots of people from other countries who come here looking for peace and freedom.""Yes," said Grandpa as they left the boat. "Since so many people want to come to America, our government puts a limit on how many are allowed in. The door is no longer open to everyone.""I know," said Sam. "Mrs. Croy told us criminals aren't accepted. And she said there's a limit to the number of people that can come each year from any one region.""I'm reminded of another gateway to freedom--one that is open to all who come," said Grandpa. "Jesus invites everyone to come to Him. Those who trust Him as their Savior are granted freedom from sin and Satan's power and can rest in God's peace as they walk with Him each day.""And we're granted citizenship in heaven," added Grandma.Sam nodded, then pointed toward a tour group. "Let's go!" he said. "A tour is starting, and I want to see that plaque with the poem." -Jan L. HansenHow About You?Is your citizenship in heaven? Have you come to Jesus, trusting Him to save you from sin and give you eternal life? God's offer is open to everyone, and there's no limit to the number of people He will accept. The Statue of Liberty was designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel, as a gift to the United States from France. She arrived in 1885 on our shores in pieces after floating across the Atlantic in 214 crates. All the pieces were assembled on Liberty Island the following year. But by 1984, after welcoming immigrants to New York for almost 100 years, she was in bad shape. In this podcast, we'll learn about how President Reagan in May 1982, 40 years ago, took action to return Lady Liberty to pristine condition. He called upon Lee Iacocca to create the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to raise the funds necessary for the restoration, and by the 4th of July 1986, she was ready for her debut. In the second half of this podcast, we'll focus on the final result.

ADDITIONAL HISTORY: Headlines You Probably Missed

On October 28, 1886, a very special lady was honored in the United States. That was the day the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Bay, on what came to be known as Liberty Island. The statue quickly became iconic, and a symbol of freedom for those coming to the United States. What else was being reported on that important day? Start your summer by cruising with the windows down, the wind blowing through your hair and a smile on your face. That’s how Indy fans prefer their Memorial Day too. 1. Move over Gatorade; milk is the drink of the winners at International Motor Speedway. The tradition that involves the winner swigging milk began in 1936 with Louis Meyer, whose go-to drink after a win was a refreshing glass of milk. An overjoyed milk executive spotted the act, and the rest is history. 2. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also known as the Brickyard. It’s called the Brickyard because the track used to be made of bricks, which are still exposed under the asphalt at the start-finish line. It’s a tradition for the drivers to kiss these bricks before the race. We cannot confirm or deny if that’s where cold sores come from. 3. The race isn’t just for men. In its history, 10 women have raced at Indy, with Danica Patrick setting the record for the highest finishing position for a woman with a third-place finish in 2005. She is also the first woman to ever lead a lap at the Indy 500. Making history this race is the Paretta Autosport team with driver Simona de Silvestro. The team, which consists of mostly women, became the first female driver/owner duo in IndyCar Series history to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. 4. While you might not be familiar with the Indy 500, there will be familiar faces on the broadcast with retired IndyCar and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) driver Danica Patrick joining Mike Tirico and retired NASCAR (and current Indy Car road course driver) Jimmie Johnson in the booth. This year’s race is all about the youth movement, but six-time Indy 500 winner Scott “Iceman” Dixon beat out Colton Herta, the 21-year-old American, and Rinus VeeKay, 20, for pole position (i.e., the best place to start the race). 5. Something you never thought you’d want to know, yet here we are. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is considered one of the world’s largest spectator facilities with more than 250,000 permanent seats and average attendance at the Indy 500 of 300,000. Only 135,000 fans will be in attendance for this year’s race. The infield is 253 acres, which usually (in non-COVID years) hosts an EDM concert in the Snake Pit and includes a golf course. Churchill Downs, Yankee Stadium, Rose Bowl Stadium, Vatican City, the Taj Mahal, the White House, Liberty Island and the Roman Colosseum could simultaneously fit inside the Speedway. The Statue of Liberty is nearly 140 years old, but she's enjoying renewed relevance in the Trump era. In announcing hostile immigration policies, Trump administration officials have been questioned about Emma Lazarus' famous poem "The New Colossus" and its message about the monument in New York Harbor. Last year, Acting Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli said on NPR’s Morning Edition, "Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and will not become a public charge. That plaque was put on the Statue of Liberty at almost the same time as the first public charge law was passed." That's a common nativist response to both the statue and poem, and it reveals some of the different ways the Statue of Liberty has reflected different attitudes towards migrants since 1886. Paul Kramer is a professor of history at Vanderbilt University who has written about the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty and how it intersects with views of immigration in US history. Last year, he and Brooke visited Liberty Island and reflected on her different meanings and portrayals in American history. For this week's podcast extra, we're re-airing that segment. You can read Professor Kramer's piece in Slate on President Reagan and the Statue of Liberty here. What an educational thrilling experience as a field trip to Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island, NYC. I truly believe that it would be an outstanding, wonderful, magnificent and great educational experience for any student body to sightsee, explore and visit the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island, NYC. This would be an outstanding and thrilling sight viewing and historically educational experience for any student body. As for me. I already visited the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. on a Hampton University field trip through the Howard Hughes program in 1994. It was a knowledgeable; sight viewing, exploring, observing, learning, historical, educational and researching experience. My student body observed, explored, researched, learned and viewed the many; world-class museums, art cultures, art exhibits and art galleries. Also. It has a wonderful and terrific zoo of observation. This was a learning educational and historical experience for me and the student body. I believe visiting the Statue of Liberty would too also be a magnificent; sight viewing, exploring, observing, learning, educational and researching experience, as well. The Statue of Liberty is a neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in NYC, USA. The copper statue was dedicated as a gift of freedom and liberty to the USA on October 28, 1886. It is a gift from France to the people of America. The statue was designed by the French sculptor Fredric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. The Statue of Liberty is a figure of Libertas. Libertas is a robed Roman liberty goddess. The Statue of Liberty holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and carries a tabula ansata(tablet), in which, she carries in her left hand has inscribed in Roman Numerals "July IV-MDCCLXXVI" which is July 4, 1776. That was the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A broken shackle and chain lay at her feet, commemorating the national abolition of slavery. The statue became a symbol of freedom and a national park tourism destination. It is a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving to the United States of America. The height of the copper statue is 151ft. and 1in. The foundation of pedestal from ground level to the tip of torch is 305ft. and 1in. The height of hand is 16ft. and 5 inches. The index finger is 8ft. and 1in. The distance across the eyes are 2ft. and 6 inches. The length of the nose is 4ft. And 6 inches. The right arm length is 42ft. The width of the statues mouth is 3ft. The weight of copper used for the statue is 60,000lbs. The weight of steel used in the statue is 250,000lbs. The total weight of the statue is 450,000lbs. And the thickness of copper sheeting is 2.4mm. There is no charge made for entrance to the national monument. But there is a cost for the ferry service that all visitors must pay. All ferry riders are subject to security screening prior to boarding the ferry. Just like the security screenings of airport procedures. Visitors who intend to enter the statue's base and pedestal must obtain a complimentary museum/pedestal ticket along with their ferry ticket. And visitors who wish to climb the staircase within the statue up to the crown must purchase a special ticket. This ticket may be reserved up to a year in advance. A total of 240 people per day are permitted to ascend up to the crown: ten per group, three groups per hour. Climbers may bring only medication and cameras. Lockers are provided for other items and must undergo a second security screening. The ferry tickets are normally $18.50. I believe that this tour of the Statue of Liberty historical monument will be an exciting, magnificent and thrilling, but learning historical and educational wonderful experience.

As the title would suggest, it's about the end of the days of pirates in New York, and the birth of the celebrity gangster, all in the story of one man, Albert Hicks and the grisly case in 1860 that changed the way Americans saw crime. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Last_Pirate_of_New_York_auphonic.mp3   In the 1990s John Gotti was the face of organized crime in New York, following a long tradition of gangsters in the Big Apple. Long before him, there was Lucky Luciano and Tammany Hall. But where did it all get started? And who started it all? These are the kinds of questions that were on the mind of Rich Cohen as he dug deeper and deeper into New York's organized crime history. The end result was his book, “The Last Pirate of New York: A Ghost Ship, A Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation.” The Scene on March 21, 1860 A boat adrift. The crew of the J.R. Mather saw it when the boats crashed into each other. Saw a darkened, lifeless boat but had to get back to port to fix their own damage quickly. Another boat came upon it less than an hour later. That boat was the Telegraph. They boarded the boat. The EA Johnson (an oyster sloop) was found on March 21st 1860. It was floating in New York's Lower Bay off Brooklyn. Its foresails were torn off during a predawn collision with the J.R. Mather. The scene was grisly. The crew had vanished, but down in the cabin, the crew found ax marks in the ceiling and the floor, a sailor's shirt with slash marks from a knife, and drawers and closets ransacked. The trial at U.S. Circuit Court on Chambers Street drew standing room only crowds. Hicks became a prototype of an American archetype – the celebrity gangster. The U.S. marshal detaining Hicks at The Tombs prison was a corrupt politician and gambling kingpin who also ran the toughest gang in Five Points. Moving the Fourth of July fireworks back to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014 went off without any problems, although it did leave a few flames burning on the bridge after the fireworks were finished. It seemed to be the smoldering remains of the fireworks casings or leftover chemicals and not the infrastructure of the bridge itself. The FDNY fireboats stationed in the East River made quick work of the flames, holding back from using the full force of their water cannons so as not to damage the bridge. This was the 43rd annual Macy's fireworks display. From the editor: A Great Big City will no longer publish to Facebook 1 year ago on July 4, 2018 — A woman climbs the Statue of Liberty pedestal, causing Liberty Island to be evacuated and canceling many midday Fourth of July tours It's been three years now since a tourist stepped on an explosive device in Central Park, and police have no new leads into where the device came from or its intention. If you have any information or photos from that day, contact NYPD CrimeStoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (1-800-577-8477), via text message at CRIMES (274637), or via online form. According to data collected by the CDC, July begins the active season for West Nile infections, which are spread via mosquito bites, so now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and consider a vaccination against diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. If you're staying in the city, you can even do your part by calling 311 with a report of standing water, defined as a place on public or private property where water gathers and remains for more than five days, creating a habitat where mosquitoes may breed. 108 years ago on July 9th, 1911, the New York Times described how a streak of hot weather, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees during the beginning of July 1911, made it difficult to transport ice from insulated storage warehouses to the "Greeks and Italians who have little ice depots in convenient basements", where people found it more convenient than waiting for the ice delivery wagons. Special honor goes out this week in recognition of Alelia Murphy, who will celebrate her 114th birthday on July 6th in Harlem. She is believed to be the oldest living American. Ms. Murphy was born in North Carolina in 1905 and has lived in Harlem since the 1920s. Sean answers your Marvel questions!0:30 Brett HeierWhat are your top three favorite marvel cinematic universe characters? What are your top three marvel comics characters? Also, have you seen sorry for your loss? It's Elisabeth Olsen's show and it's really good.3:03 Woo S! KimNo matter what the results are and what the fallout of “Avengers: End Game” the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be very different regardless of who lives and who dies.  Even without Fantastic Four and X-Men potentially coming home the MCU by the end of this year hopefully; the MCU isn't going to look the same nor is it going to feel the same as the universe that began in 2008. Lastly, I think coincidentally this is the best time for Marvel's First Family and Mutants to be introduced to further the point that the MCU that hardcore geeks and casual audiences knew after Thanos won't entirely remain, what say you, Sean?6:54 Woo S! KimI mentioned on an earlier Q&A a few weeks back how Marvel is reintroducing the Fantastic Four in a comics standpoint, could Marvel Television and or FOX quietly ending/wrapping up “The Gifted” and “Legion” just be both companies readying themselves for the merger because to be fair much like the Netflix series and the Hulu, they take place in the MCU but adjacently and from what I hear these FOX Marvel shows are kind the same when it comes to X-Men so whether the merger goes through or not creatively these FOX Marvel shows could conceivably go a couple more seasons, what are your thoughts Sean?9:20 Woo S! KimSean may you please take a moment and explain what the differences are between IMAX with laser and IMAX without laser?12:45 Mookie JohnsonIn your opinion, did the Avengers Superbowl trailer end with Cap grabbing his old shield, the new shield referenced in Homecoming, or a new shield forged in Wakanda since they have plenty of vibranium to remake his shield?14:40 Derek BeebeDid you see Glass, and if so, what did you think of it?  Particularly the third act.    (He said vaguely, to avoid spoiling anyone).14:48 Derek BeebeWhen the Disney/Fox deal is finally a done deal, will you and Paul grace us with an episode about Fant-Four-Stick?16:53 Derek BeebeWhat did you think the FOX TV movies of Generation X (1996) and Nick Fury (1998)? 17:27 Derek BeebeAre you watching The Gifted?  I'm afraid it never grabbed me and I dropped it after the first season.18:05 Robert ReinekeSean, would you care to play Vegas oddsmaker? Please provide a percentage chance of winning for the following Oscar contenders. Avengers: Infinity War to win Best Visual Effects. Black Panther to win Best Production Design. Black Panther to win Best Sound Editing. Black Panther to win Best Sound Mixing. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to win Best Animated Feature. Black Panther to win Best Original Score. All the Stars from Black Panther to win Best Original Score. Black Panther to win Best Costume Design. And, Black Panther to win Best Picture.32:07 Alex WardThis is a tricky one, but aside from what we've already seen, what are five moments you think are most likely to happen in Endgame? Professor Hulk, Cap dying, etc. (And feel free to tiptoe around things you're more knowledgeable about due to leaks)38:54 Alex WardAre you a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos at all? If so, do you think there's any place for him in the MCU? Maybe a super awkward Fantastic Four movie?39:22 AlexWhat do you think of  the recent casting of Harry Lloyd as Charles Xavier for the last season of Legion? Do  you think its kind of strange to have two  live-action versions of the same iconic  character for television and film existing concurrently with each  other? Last time  I can recall this being a thing was the case with Smallvile and Superman Returns where Brandon Routh was playing the Last Son Of Krypton on film at the same time Tom Welling was playing a different version on television.  Its kind of odd to  me. especially considering both the third season of Legion and Dark Phoenix come out this year in June. prior to this news, I was under the  impression there was an X -embargo(similar to the Bat-embargo) which prohibited the use of A-list X-men characters like Wolverine for the television show but now with the casting of the third live-action Professor X before even the MCU has had the chance to  touch the character I wonder what happened behind-the-scenes.41:12 Nolan WildeHi Sean. I'd been considering this and the TV spot may have confirmed it but I'm not sure the World knows the whole story of the snap. The events of Infinity War happened very quickly and it didn't seem the Avengers informed anyone what was happening.Do you think there will be consequences as this is partly why the Sokovia accords were brought in and if the World finds out that the Avengers chose to act alone maybe it's possible they have been outcast?44:22 Mookie JohnsonIf the Doctor Strange movie with Nightmare does well, do you think that creates an opportunity for Blade to return to the big screen?45:11 David RosenHey Sean and Friends, hope all is well! Do you think that End Game will set up any of the Disney+ limited series? Do you think the movie will make it clear that some of the characters' stories will continue on? Also on the subject of the limited series, I believe I read just today (Tuesday) that Chris Evans might be getting a chance to sit in the director's chair for one or several limited series episodes. My first guess was that it would most likely be for the Sam and Bucky series. Perhaps maybe this is what was meant by one of the Russo bros when he “We haven't seen the last of Chris Evans.” What do you think about this news/rumor and what do you director Chris Evans could bring to an episode of the “Sam and Bucky Show” that maybe other directors couldn't?48:23 David RosenHey Sean, You did a great job with the shot by shot breakdown of the End Game superbowl spot! You talked a lot about the imagine, but didn't really say anything about the voiceover from Cap. What does his line, “Some people move on. But not us.” tell you about his/the team's mentality in this movie? What do you think “moving on” is referring to? The fact that hat they lost the battle with Thanos? That their loved ones are gone? That they're in a “new world”? Something else? Do you see this line as proof that the Avengers are likely going to be the aggressors in this movie?50:48 David RosenI think I had a little bit of a different interpretation about the shot of Liberty Island and all the boats around it, than I think you did. What I gathered was that with half the population (and perhaps more from collateral damage) gone, society in New York likely broke down and is in a state of anarchy and chaos and a number of people decided to “move” to Liberty Island and take refuge there, away from some of the chaos that might be occurring in the city. What do you think about this? Is that shot meant to suggest more than just what we are shown, that perhaps society is in a state of complete disarray, or just that a large number of boats, without captains, managed to float and get stuck at the island?53:02 Jeremy EdenA couple Christmases ago, my brother got me a copy of Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I really enjoyed.  It was a fun mashup of two universes I've always loved.  We've seen some other strange universe crossovers in comic books before (JLA/Power Rangers, X-Men/Star Trek, DC/Looney Tunes, etc.)  Apart from a straight up MCU/DC crossover, which bizarre universe mashup (either real or one you make up) would you like to see make its way into the MCU, keeping in mind that nobody is REALLY asking for these to happen?54:38 David RosenSo I realized after rewatching the first End Game trailer that the Avengers compound seems to be lying right flush on a large body of water. As far as I know, aside from maybe a few lakes and the Hudson River, upstate New York doesn't really have any large bodies of water. I went back to watch the “training” scene in Antman, where they show the overhead exterior shot of the compound, and it didn't seem like the compound was sitting on any large body of water, and actually also looked entirely different from the one in the End Game trailer. I know that sometimes designs change between movies, but this seemed like a pretty big change. Ever since the first trailer premiered, one of the thoughts I had regarding Scott was that after getting out of the quantum realm, being in San Francisco, he would have had to then make a cross country drive in his van to the Avengers compound, perhaps even knot fully knowing where it is. But a west coast compound that is public knowledge might alleviate this problem. Do you think this might actually be a different Avengers compound that we're being shown in the trailer, perhaps one on the West Coast, setting up a West Coast Avengers?57:33 Seth GoslinSean, with the upcoming Black Widow film taking place before Avengers, would you like it to take place before she joined SHIELD or after? Would you prefer it to expand on an event previously referenced like Budapest or when Clint spared her or her encounter with the Winter Soldier, or would you like it to be outside of any previous references?59:37 David RosenHey Sean, I just saw the article you posted about the failed pilot order for a Marvel Television all female TV series.   This was the first I heard about this, but did you hear about this previously? Do you think this was the attempt at doing something with an all female cast that we've kept hearing and speculating about? If not, what do you think this non-order means, if anything, for future prospects of getting any kind of all female production?1:03:24 AlexIn addition to confirming once again that subsequent Deadpool films will retain the R-rating Bob Iger pointed out that other Disney  films may potentially  carry the R-rating in the future.  This tidbit of information got my little noggin thinking: do you think Marvel will eventually do a R-rated film besides The-Merc-With-The-Mouth or do you think they'll only strictly do PG-13 films with Deadpool being the lone exception to the rule? And keep up the good work,  man. You're doing a darn fine job.1:09:19 Michael Louis WeaselboyHey Sean I was just wondering who do you think will be the villain for Spiderman 3? And when do you think it will be released?1:12:18 AlexWe know that Star Wars exists in the MCU as a fictional property within the universe but how does nobody ever point out Nick Fury's uncanny resemblance to Mace Windu— who like Fury is played by Samuel motherf'ing Jackson? Does that mean only the original trilogy and sequel trilogy exist and the prequels never got made in the MCU  or do you think like our world the Star Wars prequels do in fact exist and maybe Mace Windu is just played by a different actor in the MCU?  Forgive me if you've received this type of question before but it just dawned on me.1:14:03 Daniel DavilaHey Sean I know I'm right on the deadline for this so I'll keep it short and sweet.  Do you think the living tribunal, eternity, galactus, etc. can be major players in the mcu?  Do you think they translate well to the big screen?  Love your show thanks again!1:15:53 Brian WhiteHi Sean. I would like you to expand your thoughts and comments on the idea of a Young Avengers or Champions movie. As any of us long time comic readers know, the movies have taken their liberties even while giving homage to the original material and this has mostly been successful. But so far we've seen titles and characters that came from the comics even if they were presented uniquely. Your comments about how MCU Peter Parker and Shuri can form the Young Avengers or Champions , both being characters that have never been part of either suggests to me that the MCU can create original characters and teams. In Iron Man 3, Tony gifted his sidekick Harley Keener with a lot of tech. He could show up in his own version of Iron Man armor and join up too - maybe he's the Sam Alexander you've been foreseeing. Do you foresee the MCU originating characters? No doubt the comics will copy them if it does. Thanks!1:18:39 ChristofferCan you recommend some books about Marvel – the MCU in particular – and comic book history in general?1:20:18 AlexAvengers: Endgame spoiler question See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Many films in the early 80s continued the cynicism of the 70s, and that certainly holds true for a number of John Carpenter's films, who has used several of his films and characters in them to take a pointed look at the hypocrisy of the government and society's ills as he saw them. His 1981 film 'Escape From New York' falls into that mold, while also feeling like nothing more than an early 80s action thriller set in a dystopian future. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our 1981 series with Carpenter's 'Escape From New York.' We talk about how the film holds up for us (not very well despite still being fun) and why it likely doesn't work as well as other films of Carpenter's in that period. We discuss the glimpse into the year 1997 as the film describes it and reminisce about what really happened in 1997. We chat about the performances, from Kurt Russell in one of his iconic roles, to Lee Van Cleef to Adrienne Barbeau to Isaac Hayes in a role far too weakly written for him. We touch on the production of the film and how they didn't film any of it in New York City except a few bits on Liberty Island. And we chat about the character of "Snake" Plissken, why he works, why we like him, and if we agree with Russell in saying that it's an intrinsically American character and should only be played by American actors when they finally get around to doing a remake. It's a fun film that unfortunately really carries the burden of its budget and its time around its neck, getting weighed down and faltering when it has such a great concept. Regardless, we have a great time talking about it. Tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! A replica of this suit was created for the episode. and , not having seen the Doctor for two months but aware of his recent exploits in history, receive a "TARDIS blue" coloured envelope. The envelope contains a date and time along with a set of physical coordinates that lead the couple to Utah, where they rendezvous with the Doctor and . From the Doctor's perspective, it has been nearly two centuries since his last adventure with Amy and Rory (he left them when he was aged 908 and is now 1103). The Doctor now carries a diary identical to the one carried by River Song, and it is apparent that River and the Doctor have shared many adventures together as the two time travellers compare notes at a diner. The Doctor takes the group on a picnic at a nearby lake where he tells them he is taking them on a trip to "Space 1969". There, Amy sees a mysterious figure in the distance, but it then vanishes and Amy appears to immediately forget what she saw. The picnickers are soon joined by an older man named Canton Everett Delaware III, who had also received an envelope. Suddenly, a figure in a space suit emerges from the lake, and the Doctor warns the others to stay back and not interfere while he goes forward to talk. The Doctor appears to recognize the person in the suit when it raises its visor. They talk for a while, after which the Doctor stands still, his head bowed. Before anyone can react, the astronaut raises an energy weapon and twice shoots the Doctor, who begins to . A third shot disrupts the regeneration process and kills the Doctor. The astronaut then retreats back into the lake, leaving the Doctor's companions stunned and horrified. Assured the Doctor is dead, they give the Doctor a using a can of gasoline Delaware brought. Regrouping at the diner Amy, Rory, and River discuss the sender of the envelopes when the Doctor—a younger version of himself now aged 909—emerges from the restroom, revealing he also was given an envelope. Hesitant to tell the Doctor of his pending death, they explain the situation so far, and the Doctor uses Delaware's name and "Space 1969" in the TARDIS, ending up at the of the White House in 1969. They watch as takes a call from a mysterious young girl named "Jefferson Adams Hamilton" asking for help while a younger Delaware looks on. The Doctor reveals himself and gains Delaware's trust, convincing Nixon to give him a few minutes to locate the child. While he works out her location, Amy again sees a mysterious figure, and excuses herself to the restroom. There the figure, a , waits for her, and destroys an innocent woman despite Amy's pleas. Amy realizes the alien figure is wiping her memory of her encounter when she looks away, and takes a photo of the alien on her mobile phone. By the time she returns to the Oval Office, having no recall of the events, the Doctor has found the girl's location —a building near , Florida at the intersection of streets named Jefferson, Adams, and Hamilton. The Doctor and his companions leave in the TARDIS, followed closely by a curious Delaware. In the building, they find pieces of a space suit as well as ancient alien technology. Alone, River warns Amy that though they may encounter the astronaut that killed the future Doctor, attempting to stop the astronaut now may create a time paradox. River and Rory explore a vast network of tunnels under the building and spreading throughout the planet, encountering and forgetting other Silence. They eventually come on a control room similar to the one seen in "", unaware that they are being surrounded by more Silence. Behind Rory, there is a flashing similar to the flashing a Silent had made as it was killing the woman in the bathroom near the Oval Office. River turns to see him, and shouts his name. We do not see what has happened. Above ground, the Doctor, Amy, and Delaware hear the cries of a girl. Delaware gives chase, but Amy, suddenly in pain, realizes she must tell the Doctor something as they follow. They find Delaware nearby, unconscious, and Amy finally lets the Doctor know that she is pregnant. Before they can react, the astronaut appears. Amy reaches for Delaware's gun, while the astronaut lifts its helmet, revealing the face of a young girl. Before she can stop herself, Amy fires upon the astronaut. Continuity The envelopes each contain the date 22 April 2011 (the day prior to the first broadcast of this episode), and coordinates (). River Song tells Rory that she and the Doctor are travelling through time "in opposite directions." She comments that a day is coming when "he'll look into my eyes, and not have the faintest idea who I am. And I think it's going to kill me." In the episode "", the meets River for the first time (from his perspective); at the conclusion of that story, River is killed saving people trapped inside the Library's core. The control panel River Song and Rory find in the underground tunnels is the same control panel that was found in the upstairs flat in the episode "".[] The TARDIS had been previously turned invisible in the story . When Canton first leaves the TARDIS, the Doctor remarks, "Brave heart, Canton." This is a reference to the 's recurrent statement to , "Brave heart, Tegan." The older Doctor is seen with a diary similar to River Song's at the beginning of the episode, swapping notes with River. Outside references In Amy and Rory's home, Rory is watching the film . The Doctor then runs up and waves at the camera. In the White House toilets scene, Joy believes the alien to be something from . River notes that the were created in the Doctor's honour, laughing and talking about Jim the Fish. The Doctor calls River Song Mrs. Robinson. That is a reference to a book called from 1963 by . In the film from 1967 plays the older Mrs. Robinson. She seduces the young . Prequel On 25 March 2011, a short exclusive scene serving as a prequel for the first episode was released on the show's official website. The prequel depicts () receiving a recorded phone call of a girl's voice while sitting in the . The girl, whose voice the president appears to recognize from a previous call, begs him to "look behind you", warning him that there is something there. The president angrily refuses and the line goes dead; the camera then pans around him to show an out-of-focus, inhuman figure standing to the president's right. Production Writing Show runner and episode writer Steven Moffat (pictured) created the Silence to compete with other creatures in the past in terms of "scariness." The episode was written by , who took charge as show runner since 2010. Having also written the following episode, "", Moffat wanted the 2011 season to start with a two-part story in an attempt to begin with more gravity and a wider scope in plot. In the episode following the broadcast of "The Impossible Astronaut", Moffat states it was one of the darker episodes of the series, but it still maintained the same level of humour. The inclusion of the Doctor getting killed felt like a series ender for some of the producers, but was actually there to "kick it off." In writing the death scene of the future Doctor, Moffat wanted to acknowledge to the audience that are not invincible, and could still die permanently if killed before regeneration, a fact the series previously acknowledged in . In creating the Silence, the alien antagonists of the episode, Moffat wanted them to challenge other monsters in past in terms of "scariness." He felt these creatures are a "much bigger deal." Amy Pond's pregnancy will be involved in a story arc as the series progresses. Cast notes In October 2010, it was announced that , who appeared in other past science fiction series including , and , would make a guest appearance on the series. Sheppard described playing Canton as a "dream job," and wished to appear in another of Moffat's works, including . Even though Sheppard is an English actor, it was his first appearance on British television. For the scene depicting the older Canton Delaware, it was planned that Sheppard would appear older using makeup effects; he successfully suggested instead that his father, , play the role. American actor Stuart Milligan was cast as President Nixon, which he found exciting, having played other presidents in the past including . Prosthetic pieces were applied on his cheeks, nose and ears to resemble Nixon as much as possible. He also practiced how Nixon would speak, but initially found it difficult since he had to wear fake teeth. Milligan previously appeared in the animated special as the voice of Colonel Stark. Filming and effects Karen Gillan (centre) was genuinely upset filming the death scene of the future Doctor. This pair of episodes marks the first time that Doctor Who has filmed principal photography footage within the ; the American-produced of 1996 was filmed in Canada. Some second-unit establishing shots of New York and the Statue of Liberty were filmed on Liberty Island for the episode "", but none of the cast of the episode were involved in the shoot. Filming took place in the state of . For the opening shot for the location, director wanted it to be epic so that the audience could recognise where the episode was set. The crew wanted to add as many American icons as they could into those shots, including a hat, a 1950s and a yellow . Moffat, having enjoyed writing episodes featuring River Song, wanted to give her an impressive entrance. Haynes had Alex Kingston block the Sun light from the camera angle and blowing smoke from her revolver. The scenes involving the picnic and the future-Doctor dying took place on the shore of . The suit worn by the future-Doctor's killer was a fabricated replica of an Apollo space suit. It was waterproofed as the killer came out of the water, and in real life space suits were not designed to be used in water. In filming the death scene the filming crew noticed that Karen Gillan was genuinely upset and "was acting her heart out." In filming the "Viking funeral" scene, Haynes wished to film it during the . However, the sun set over the desert, so was instead filmed during , as the sun rose over the water. Kingston had to genuinely slap Matt Smith several times in a scene because it was difficult to fake. Kingston recalled that after a few takes, Smith got red cheeked and grew frustrated at having to do the sequence over and over again. The Oval Office set was constructed at in South . Because the production crew had access to several pictures and plans of the real office, they were able to replicate it in almost every detail. The main problem for building the set was the plastering; the crew normally plaster one wall at a time for normal rooms, but because the Oval Office was round, they had to do the entire set at once. The American-style diner scene when the companions reunite with the Doctor in this episode is actually located in . The film the Doctor intruded was done by Smith dancing in front of . The episode opens with a still-caption tribute to actress , who died from on 19 April 2011. Sladen had previously appeared in the series as companion , and as the same character on the spin-off series . Broadcast and reception Broadcast and ratings "The Impossible Astronaut" was first broadcast on in the on 23 April 2011 at 6 pm. The episode also aired on in the United States and in on the same day. It aired on in on 30 April. After its original broadcast in the United Kingdom, "The Impossible Astronaut" received preliminary overnight ratings of 6.52 million viewers, a 36.7% audience share in its timeslot. Despite winning its timeslot, ratings were down by 1.2 million from the previous series premiere "", meaning it has the lowest ratings of all the opening episodes of the series since the shows revival in 2005. The episode became the second highest rated programme of the night, behind , which attracted 8.99 million on . Critical reception The episode was met with positive reviews from television critics. Dan Martin of reacted positively towards the episode, believing the cast performed better than the previous . He stated "Steven Moffat has thrown away the rule book and made Doctor Who as, you imagine, he's pictured it should be his whole life. Killing the Doctor leaves the shape of the series mapped out, raises the bar so that no one is safe, and sees Amy, Rory and River facing a terrible dilemma." Martin liked that "Amy's numbed horror ramps things up to a series-finale level on intensity from the off," and then switches "into an Oval Office comedy of manners," and "morphs into gothic horror and finally flings you to the ground with its cinematic cliffhanger." He was also positive towards the American setting, and "our eccentric British foursome bumbling through it," believing the series raised its game with this." With regards to the Silence, Martin believed it was "a standard Moffat psychological trick, but the most refined to date." Morgan Jeffery of called the episode "a fantastic launch for the sixth series," adding "the Doctor Who team's US location shooting has certainly paid off, lending these early scenes a grand scale that the series could scarcely have expected to achieve in 2005, let alone in 1963." Commenting on the future-Doctor's death, Jeffery said "seven minutes in, a nation's collective jaw dropped as The Doctor — this show's lead — is mercilessly gunned down. This plot twist is simply stunning, and it's difficult to imagine even casual viewers not sitting up to pay attention at this point." Jeffery also believed that the series regulars were on "top form," adding "the more abrasive aspects of Amy Pond's personality seem to have been toned down this year, and Karen Gillan responds with her best, most sympathetic performance to date. Arthur Darvill also lives up to his recent promotion to full-time companion. His comic timing is simply superb, but he excels too in the episode's darker moments." Jeffery rated the episode five stars out of five. Gavin Fuller of believed it was "a cracking start to the first part of the 2011 series, with the shocking ending of Amy seemingly shooting a girl making one keen wait for the conclusion next week to see how it all resolves itself," as well as enjoying the concept of the Silence. Rick Marshall of believed that "Steven Moffat and the Doctor Who crew offer up yet another great episode," but also said the "big cliffhanger will likely cause more than a few fans' heads to explode." In addition, Marshall believed the alien antagonists "give the a run for their money in scare factor." Simon Brew of Den of Geek thought the episode was "a triumphant return for Doctor Who, bubbling with confidence and throwing down story strands that hint at an engrossing series." Brew liked Sheppard's performance as Delaware and Darvill's increasing presence as Rory. Brew also complimented Haynes' work in the United States, saying it was an improvement from "", which featured British actors attempting to play with American accents. Tom Phillips of said the 1969 US setting were "beautifully used," and enjoyed the "spookiness" of the Silence. However Phillips felt the episode would be "a bit hard to get into" for new viewers.
