Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we'd like to wish you a Happy New Year 2024 with this encore episode for first episode of our third season. Our guest today is talking to musician Rachel Haden about her father, influential jazz bassist Charlie Haden. Rachel was kind enough to talk to us about so many things including her memories of growing up as a triplets and going for walks with jazz trumpeter Don Cherry when the Haden's lived in New York. This led us down the path of many other genres of music including country, punk, jazz, indie rock and much.more as the Haden's all sang and played instruments growing up. Thanks dad. We learn about the Rachel's time on the road with Todd Rundgren, her band That Dog, Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance as well as Beck, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger and more. While we were at it we also discuss jaco Pastorius, Ornette Coleman, Ry Cooder, Jack White, Mike Watt and others. It's a very fertile musical well we draw from when talking to a Haden family member like Rachel as there are so many avenues and styles of music she and her family are connected to. The story spans 1930s Iowa where Charlie was part of The Haden Family Band, who rivaled the Carter Family in popularity in the Midwest and runs all the way to the 2020's with the release of Rachel's solo albums including making music with Charlie's son-in-law, comedian Jack Black of Tenacious D. In 1979 ontmoet Toots de onstuimige jazzbassist Jaco Pastorius. Niet lang daarna delen ze het podium en is het publiek getuige van de unieke chemie tussen beiden. Pastorius vindt in hem de stabiliteit die hij in zijn eigen leven mist, maar ook voor Toots zijn de jaren 70 en 80 op privé vlak eerder tumultueus. Het is in deze periode dat er in het liefdesverhaal tussen Toots en Brazilië een sleutelhoofdstuk wordt geschreven: nadat de Brazilianen het album 'Elis & Toots' (met zangeres Elis Regina) te horen krijgen, sluiten ze hem meteen in hun hart. Later maakt hij met de 'beau monde' van de Braziliaanse muziekscene het dubbelalbum The Brasil Project. Na een fenomenale comeback in Bozar in 1986, harkt Toots de laatste decennia van zijn carrière de eerbetonen bij elkaar. Het genie van de Marollen krijgt (eindelijk)waar hij recht op heeft en blijft ook nog op hoge leeftijd verder spelen. Operation Pastorius was a failed German intelligence plan for sabotage inside the United States during World War II. The operation was staged in June 1942 and was to be directed against strategic American economic targets. The operation was named by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, chief of the German Abwehr, for Francis Daniel Pastorius, the leader of the first organized settlement of Germans in America.

Por estas fechas, hace ahora unos 34 años, moría, arrinconado en un hospital y después de haber recibido una paliza de un portero de discoteca, el hombre que revolucionó la forma de tocar el contrabajo, un tipo que derrochaba alma de jazz y espíritu punk, un hombre que paso sin esfuerzo de la cima a la autodestrucción, un hombre que tenía un talento innato y que llegó a la fama muy rápidamente pero que debido a su diagnosticada bipolaridad alimentada con sus excesos, le ocasionó la muerte a edad muy temprana, a los 35 años. Hablamos de uno de los mejores bajistas del mundo: Jaco Pastorius. Hoy vamos a recordarle escuchando el primer álbum de su trilogía Live in New York City, un disco grabado en vivo en la ciudad de Nueva York en noviembre de 1985. Su primer corte... Dania.- Pastorius nació el 1 de diciembre de 1951, en Norristown, Pensilvania, hijo de Jack Pastorius, batería y cantante de orquesta, se aficionó pronto a la música y siguiendo los pasos de su padre, empezó tocando la batería. Un accidente deportivo le imposibilitó seguir con el instrumento y, aprovechando la oportunidad de una vacante de bajista en el grupo que tocaba por aquel entonces, se compró un bajo por 15 dólares y pasó a ocupar, sin más, el puesto de bajista de la banda. Con, más o menos, 17 años, Jaco empezó a apreciar el jazz y, con grandes esfuerzos, consiguió comprarse un contrabajo acústico. La humedad de su casa hizo que el instrumento se agrietara y quedara sensiblemente perjudicado, así que, lo cambió por un bajo eléctrico, un Fender Jazz Bass de 1962 , al que, posteriormente, le quitó los trastes para emular así el sonido acústico. Teen Town, Jaco Pastorius al bajo. Atención. J Pastorius no tuvo una vida fácil, todo lo contrario, muy pronto se vio con la obligación de alimentar a su familia. Se casó a los 18 años con Tracy, una camarera que realmente fue el amor de su vida. Con solo 22 años Pastorius había formado una familia y ya tenía dos hijos. Su oportunidad le llegó de la mano de Bobby Colomby, batería de la banda Blood, Sweat & Tears. El tal Bobby quería ligar con Tracy pero ésta le dijo que estaba “casada con el mejor bajista del mundo”. Bobby le siguió la broma y dijo que le gustaría oírle tocar. Jaco llegó a la sesión descalzo, un bajo y una pelota de balón cesto. Empezó a tocar y dejó a todos con los ojos como platos. Colomby se lo llevó a Nueva York y allí empezó todo. Pastorius empezó a escalar los peldaños que habían de llevarle a lo más alto. Empezó a grabar con los mejores: Ian Hunter, Pat Metheny, con Jony Mitchell, que por cierto, lo definió como “el bajista de mis sueños”. Y fue entonces cuando recibió la llamada de Joe Zawinul, líder de Weather Report. Se habían conocido durante una gira por Miami en 1974 y un años después, cuando la banda se quedó sin bajista, Jaco se incorporó al grupo. Con su aportación, y en pleno auge del jazz fusión, la Weather Report dio un salto de calidad enorme. Pronto empezó a desplegar toda su valía en el escenario. Además de sus solos, su puesta en escena se hizo espectacular. Baste con recordar su truco de espolvorear talco por el escenario para poder deslizarse con sus pies descalzos con pasitos que emulaban a su admirado James Brown. Todo un número. Estando como estaba a merced de sus debilidades, el mundo de Jaco Pastorius se vino abajo. Se pasaba los días deambulando totalmente borracho y pasaba del llanto a la risa en segundos. De repente, su colegas empezaron a evitar tocar con él porque nunca sabían en qué podía terminar la aventura. Jaco se quedó solo con sus demonios. Cuando Nueva York le dio la espalda y se convirtió en persona non grata en todos los sitios nocturnos, decidió volverse a su pueblo, donde los bares poco a poco también le fueron cerrando las puertas. En una entrevista grabada en video, el entrevistador inicia la conversación con una catarata de elogios. Pastorius, con los ojos inyectados en sangre, la mirada perdida y el rostro de alguien diez años mayor, solo atina a contestar: “¡Consígueme un show!”. La gran paradoja: el mejor bajista del mundo no tenía dónde tocar ni caerse muerto. Al final lo hizo el 21 de septiembre de 1987. Unos días antes había sido expulsado del Midnight Bottle Club. Cuando empezó a patear la puerta, el portero del local le propinó una tremenda paliza que le provocó una hemorragia interna masiva. Fue hospitalizado y nunca volvió a la calle. Su agresor se declaró culpable de cargos de homicidio involuntario y finalmente sólo pasó cuatro meses en prisión. Supongo que son legión los bajistas a los que su prolífica y, desgraciadamente, corta carrera, ha inspirado para tocar su instrumento de una forma distinta. Jaco Pastorius, otro gran músico. Y nada más, os espero a todos la próxima semana. Hasta entonces… ¡Buenas vibraciones!

Alphonso Johnson es un músico de jazz y jazz fusión estadounidense especializado en el uso del bajo eléctrico y del Chapman Stick. Nacido en Filadelfia, Pensilvania el 2 de febrero de 1950. Johnson inició su carrera musical como trombonista, pero a finales de su adolescencia se decantaría definitivamente por el bajo eléctrico, inscribiéndose en la Philadelphia Music Academy para seguir los cursos de John Lamb, por aquel entonces el bajista de la Duke Ellington Orchestra. Como él mismo precisó, su actividad profesional se inició en 1968, pero sus primeras actividades de cierta importancia datan de 1972, cuando con tan sólo 21 años recorrería el mundo con la orquesta de Woody Herman, participando al mismo tiempo en la grabación del álbum “The Raven Speaks” de este último. Para entonces, el músico mostraba una inusitada facilidad técnica en su instrumento y había desarrollado un estilo de ejecución muy personal. Su presencia en el grupo de Chuck Mangione atrajo la atención del gran saxofonista de jazz Wayne Shorter, quien en 1974 le propondría para la grabación del disco Mysterious Traveler en sustitución de Miroslav Vitous. El músico contribuiría con dos composiciones para el disco Scarlet Woman y Cucumber Slumber, con un corte funky que presentaba el bajo de Johnson situado preeminentemente en la mezcla. El bajista permaneció aún dos años en la banda, durante los que, además de participar en las giras mundiales del grupo, y registrar un segundo disco para Zawinul y Shorter, grabaría su primer disco de debut en solitario, Moonshadows. Sin embargo, en 1976 Johnson fue sustituido por Jaco Pastorius a mediados de la grabación de Black Market, un disco que cuenta, no obstante, con una fuerte presencia de Johnson en temas como Black Market, Gibraltar o su propia composición Herandnu. Tras abandonar Weather Report, Johnson decidió concentrarse en su propia carrera como solista, grabando Yesterday Dreams en 1976, un álbum que vería su continuación un año más tarde con Spellbound. En este último disco, Alphonso Johnson empleaba ya el Chapman Stick, un instrumento que había descubierto en 1976 y que seguiría utilizando en grabaciones y directos de manera intermitente desde entonces. En 1979 Johnson pasa a formar parte del supergrupo CBS All-Stars, una banda compuesta por el saxofonista Tom Scott, el guitarrista Steve Khan y el baterista Billy Cobham y con la que grabaría un solo álbum en directo. Con la entrada de la nueva década, Johnson iniciaría su actividad como productor con la presentación en 1983 de la banda sonora original de “Sound of Sunshine…Sounds of Rain”, un filme infantil que recibiría una nominación a los Oscar de ese mismo año. En 1984 el bajista se une a la banda de Carlos Santana en sustitución de David Margen. Johnson permaneció tres años en la banda, grabando dos discos (Beyond Appareances, de 1985 y Freedom, de 1987) y participando en una gira mundial con el guitarrista mexicano. Tras su paso por Santana, Alphonso Johnson continuó su actividad como músico de sesión acompañando a algunos de los más grandes nombres de la escena del jazz contemporáneo, como Wayne Shorter, Flora Purim, Quincy Jones, Lee Ritenour, The Crusaders, John McLaughlin o Sarah Vaughan. En 1997 Alphonso editó “Abraxas Pool”, con el grupo Abraxas, formado por antiguos miembros de Santana. Durante 1998 y 1999 formó parte del grupo Jazz Is Dead, junto a Billy Cobham. En el año 2000 participó en una gira con antiguos miembros de Grateful Dead en sustitución de Phil Lesh, antes de unirse de nuevo a Jazz is Dead y a la banda de Gregg Rollie, el organista original de Santana. A este impresionante curriculum de colaboraciones hay que añadir la intensa actividad docente que ha ejercido el músico desde la mitad de la década de 1980: Además de haber contribuido a la edición de varios métodos didácticos, Johnson ha impartido clases en algunas de las más prestigiosas academias de música moderna del mundo, incluyendo la Mesar Hause Institute of Music de Tokio, la Bass School of Music de Colonia, el Musicians Institute, o el Los Angeles Music Academy de cuyo departamento de bajo eléctrico es director desde 1997. Entre los numerosos artistas con quien Alphonso Johnson ha colaborado, podemos citar a: Chet Baker, Santana, Weather Report, The Crusaders, Bob Weir, Chuck Mangione, George Duke, En Vogue, Wayne Shorter, Sérgio Mendes, Tony Williams, Joe Williams, Gregory Hines, Neal Schon, Tom Coster, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Eric Gale, Ronnie Foster, Allan Holdsworth, Cannonball Adderley, Stanley Clarke, Woody Herman, Eddie Henderson, Flora Purim, Quincy Jones, Lee Ritenour, Phil Collins, Tom Scott, Steve Khan, The Whispers, John McLaughlin, Jeffrey Osborne, Sarah Vaughan, Dori Caymmi, Pino Daniele, Carl Anderson, Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer o Jimmy Page. La entrada de Johnson en Weather Report sustituyendo al virtuoso contrabajista Miroslav Vitous, supuso un nuevo sonido para la banda, más moderno, afilado y funky. Sin embargo, su posición histórica como antecesor de Jaco en el grupo ha ejercido en Johnson una doble influencia que no siempre ha resultado positiva para el bajista, pues al tiempo que la asociación de ambos nombres ha contribuido a divulgar la obra de Johnson entre críticos y aficionados, ha empañado también sus contribuciones bajo la enorme sombra de Pastorius. Sin embargo, las aportaciones de Johnson van mucho más allá que el simple papel que ha jugado como predecesor de Jaco Pastorius en Weather Report: en su obra, el artista desarrolla una voz absolutamente diversa que merece, por méritos propios, un puesto de honor en la historia del bajo eléctrico.

Jaco Pastorius fue, tal y como él mismo se definía, el mejor bajista eléctrico del mundo. La egolatría y la arrogancia que marcaron su personalidad, fueron de la mano de un genio musical innato, una creatividad musical sin limites tanto como compositor como intérprete virtuoso en su instrumento, el bajo eléctrico sin trastes, del cual se puede considerar prácticamente creador y gran maestro. Durante su breve vida, dejó su impronta en el grupo de jazz fusión Weather Report, en el que permaneció cinco años a partir de mediados de la década de los años setenta. Sus propios registros discográficos son más bien escasos, dos álbumes de estudio, "Jaco Pastorius" y "Word of Mouth" y alguna grabación en directo como "Invitation" registrada en los últimos años de su carrera, son el exiguo testimonio de su arte, pero ha sido más que suficiente para haber creado una escuela en la que se han formado varias generaciones de bajistas desde entonces. La enfermedad mental y las adicciones protagonizaron los últimos años de su vida. Una época de lamentable decadencia física y artística que finalizó con su dramática muerte en el mes de septiembre de 1987, a la edad de 35, tras una pelea en un club de Wilton Manors, en Florida. Having played with the likes of John McLaughlin, Chick Corea and Hiromi, Hadrien is also an established artist in his own right having released 2 albums to critical acclaim. I managed to catch up with him backstage at Melbourne's Bird's Basement jazz club while he was in town with the Zawinul Legacy featuring Scott Kinsey and Kirk Covington from fusion legends Tribal Tech. Corey Brown started out on the "traditional" music school path. Starting out at the University of North Texas, Corey left and became a graphic designer. He began developing on the web in the early 1990s. Fast forward a few years, and he created Squidoo with bestselling author Seth Godin. Squidoo became one of the most-visited websites ever with over 85 million monthly visits. Corey fused his passion for the bass with his passion for the web in unexpected and impactful ways. First, he created and ran the official Jaco Pastorius web site, working on it from 2002 to 2007 and again in 2014. Next, worked on the Portrait of Jaco… the Early Years box set. He designined and produced the packaging for the release in 2003. But Corey wasn't done with innovating for the bass. In 2008, he founded no treble, which turned into the most popular online bass magazine on the web. With over a dozen regular contributors and hundreds of thousands of monthly visits, no treble has re shaped the way bassists worldwide connect with and learn from each other. Nazi spying operations in New York City didn't end with the Duquesne. Germans were reeling from the obliteration of their vast spy ring, and ample resources were dedicated to rebuilding German espionage in the USA.  This effort started with Operation Pastorius: a well- researched but poorly- executed effort to send saboteurs to bomb aluminum and magnesium plants, major bridges, and major railroad junctions.  This was a time when the German American Bund was going strong. However, it did not go as planned. Gil Goldstein is an arranger, composer, educator, pianist and accordionist. He has arranged projects for artists including Michael Brecker, Esperanza Spalding, Boz Scaggs, Michael Franks, Dave Sanborn, Chris Botti, The Manhattan Transfer, Paul Simon, and Pat Metheny, and produced projects for Bobby McFerrin, Jane Monheit, Mike Stern, Jim Hall and Randy Brecker…and more.His book, The Jazz Composers Companion, is in its third edition.Gil’s meeting and subsequent work with Gil Evans had a profound effect on his professional trajectory. Goldstein would become the piano player in Gil Evans band for the final years of Evans career, and when Gil Evans passed away, it was Gil Goldstein who kept the flame alive as the musical director of the band.This is an extremely deep conversation. The first half is an overview of Gil’s early development and career, and the second half is a treasure trove of information for anyone interested in arranging. Gil explains how he thinks about arranging, specifically the importance of the overtone series, the fibonacci sequence, and ultimately the idea of the “universal musical mind”. He says, “You have an intimate relationship that is not coming from your brain – your choices are so organic that you almost don’t have a choice.
