Der amerikanische Pianist Brad Mehldau gehört zu den derzeit erfolgreichsten Musikern des Jazz. Sein Markenzeichen: Er verwendet gern Stücke aus der Popmusik. Erst vor einigen Wochen ist ein ganzes Album mit Songs von den Beatles erschienen. Jetzt hat Mehldau auch eine umfangreiche Autobiografie veröffentlicht. Darin geht es um musikalische Erfahrungen im New York der frühen 1990er-Jahre, wo er seinen musikalischen Stil entwickelt hat, aber auch ernste persönliche Probleme lösen musste.

Esta semana, dedicamos una nueva edición de Rebelión Sónica, al nuevo disco del importante pianista, compositor y arreglador musical estadounidense, Brad Mehldau, “Jacob’s Ladder”. Editado el 18 de marzo recién pasado por Nonesuch Records, “el álbum presenta piezas que reflexionan sobre las escrituras y la búsqueda de Dios a través de música inspirada en el rock progresivo que Mehldau amaba cuando era un joven adolescente y que fue su puerta de entrada a la fusión que eventualmente lo llevó a descubrir el jazz”. A su vez, el disco cuenta con colaboraciones de destacados músicos, entre ellos, el mandolinista Chris Thile, la cantante Cécile McLorin Salvant, el baterista Mark Guiliana, la cantante Becca Stevens y el saxofonista Joel Frahm. “El conducto musical del disco es el rock progresivo”, señaló el mismo Mehldau. “El prog fue la música de mi infancia, antes de que descubriera el jazz. Fue mi puerta de entrada a la fusión de Miles Davis, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra y otros grupos, que a su vez fue la puerta de entrada a más jazz. El jazz compartía con el progresivo un alcance expresivo más amplio y ambiciones a mayor escala que la música rock que ya conocía”. “El progresivo de Rush, Gentle Giant y Emerson, Lake and Palmer aquí solo insinúa el rango conceptual, compositivo y emocional del género (…). Evitar un enfoque de tributo directo a todas las canciones, y opté en algunos casos por extractos o reelaboración de temas”, concluye Mehldau. En esta ocasión, escucharemos composiciones originales y adaptaciones de piezas de Rush y Gentle Giant. Como es tradición, Rebelión Sónica se transmite por radio Rockaxis los miércoles a las 10, 17 y 23 horas -se repite los domingos a las 19 horas-, con la conducción de Héctor Aravena.
