It serves as a prequel to previous films, being set in the Northern Great Plains in 1719. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison. It stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, and Bennett Taylor. The story revolves around a young Comanche woman, Naru, who is striving to prove herself as a hunter. She finds herself having to protect her people from a vicious, humanoid alien that hunts humans for sport, as well as from French fur traders who are destroying the buffalo they rely on for survival. Development of the film began during the production of The Predator (2018), when producer John Davis was approached by Trachtenberg and Aison, with a concept that they had been developing since 2016. In late 2020, the film's title was revealed to be the codename for the fifth installment in the franchise. Filming took place around Calgary during the summer of 2021, with most of the film being filmed in English, with some sequences being shot in Comanche and French as well. A full Comanche language dub was provided for the film, with the cast reprising their roles, thus making it the first feature film to do so. Prey premiered at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2022, and was released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film in the United States and on Disney+ and Star internationally on August 5. The film received positive reviews from critics. In 1719 in the Great Plains, Naru, a young Comanche woman trained as a healer, dreams of becoming a great hunter like her brother Taabe. While tracking deer she witnesses strange lights in the sky, which she believes to be a Thunderbird and a sign she is ready to become a hunter, but is actually the dropship for an alien hunter. Later Puhi, a warrior of the tribe, is taken by a cougar. Naru accompanies the search party, which tracks and finds Puhi near death. She tends Puhi's wounds and gives him an herb called orange totsiyaa, which lowers his body temperature to slow his bleeding. Naru returns with the search party and Puhi while Taabe stays behind to hunt the cougar. Finding large, unusual tracks and a skinned rattlesnake, Naru circles back with Paake and reunites with Taabe. The three set a trap for the cougar but it kills Paake. Plot[edit]
Hollywood cinema has often featured Native American men in Westerns as brutal, hypermasculine barbarian warriors, and Native American women as hyper-sexualised or a quiet subservient. They'd also often be portrayed by white actors in brownface. How remarkable that a Predator prequel aimed to set this injustice right?Despite not being of Native American descent, director Dan Trachtenberg and writer Patrick Aison knew that they needed to make this movie as authentic as possible to the 1700s in the Great Plains, and not only did they get the advice of the Native communities, they involved them in every aspect of making Prey, and this started with producer Jhane Myers - the VIP of this movie.Myers was instrumental on the authenticity and representation of the Comanche in Prey, as well as ensuring that a variety of roles, both in front and behind the camera, were First Nations people, with Native interns in the crew at all levels, as well as first time Native actors, led by an impeccable lead performance by Amber Midthunder. But the greatest contributions came from community and tribal elders, who advised not only on language and specific tribal culture, including weapons, customs, face painting and regalia. Comanche is classified as a severely endangered world language, which makes it even more incredible that we got a Comanche dub of this movie. It's more important than ever to preserve this language.Prey is as authentic to Comanche tradition as it can be, and it's the best Predator movie by far. Yeah, I said what I said. Elle Fanning is set to star in Badlands, the latest instalment of the Predator franchise, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who helmed the successful Prey. While plot details and Fanning's role remain under wraps, the film is generating significant buzz. Prey followed a young Comanche warrior battling a Predator and received critical acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations. Trachtenberg co-writes Badlands with Patrick Aison, known for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Fanning recently starred in The Great and The Girl From Plainville. A direct sequel to Prey is also in development, with Badlands moving forward first. No release date has been announced.

John from The Wicked Wild joins Caitlin to cover Prey, the newest installment in the Predator franchise. John is an expert on Predator, and he was able to walk me through some of the lore and easter eggs that I missed. And we both loved this one! It has cool themes around gender, siblings, and the dynamics of predators and prey (and prey that becomes a predator herself). Thanks for joining, John!
So for our first back-to-school episode of Slashers Podcast, Jake, Mikey and Ade delve into the titular Hulu premiere of Prey. As you may or may not, Prey is actually a prequel to Predator, as our favorite out of this world hunter stalks and kills people and animals during the Northern Great Plains in North America in 1719. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison and stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLegro, Michelle Thrush, and Julian Black. Join us to discuss how this film is not woke, how much we actually enjoyed this prequel, and how it pays homage and respects one of our most beloved franchises. On another note, find out why this film was such a curse to record, as we literally had to reschedule it dozens of times and Jake was almost electrocuted. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing PREY (2022), a Hulu original currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+. The film, written by Patrick Aison, from a story by Patrick Aison and Dan Trachtenberg, is directed by Dan Trachtenberg. The film follows Naru (newcomer Amber Midthunder who we hope to see more of) a young woman in the Comanche Nation circa 1719. We are introduced to her and a day in her life where she obviously yearns for more but because of the social order of things has been relegated to more of the women's work roles. She's intelligent and a skilled hunter - things that come in handy and help her on her journey. Things escalate quickly and a dangerous menace is out in the woods and she takes it upon herself to engage it head on and save her village. Gorgeous locales, costumes and a solid script make this a fantastic addition to the franchise and a MUST WATCH. The film is 1 h and 39 m and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. It's been thirty-five years since Arnold lathered himself in mud and shouted the now iconic internet meme, “Get to the chopper,” in Predator, and against all odds, the franchise has found new life in the latest entry streaming on Hulu, Prey. In today's special The Cinematic Schematic podcast interview, we are spotlighting some of the incredible behind-the-scenes talents that helped bring Prey to life! Coming right off the heels of the critically and financially underwhelming The Predator(2018), director Dan Trachtenberg(10 Cloverfield Lane, The Boys) and Patrick Aison's new take on the iconic hunter was greenlit and this time, things looked a little bit different. Audiences would be sent back in time 300 years, and instead of following a bodybuilder or wisecracking action movie hero with guns, this story would star a Comanche nation woman named Naru who uses her wit and determination to face down the 20th Century Studios alien icon. Before we go any further, we know what you're thinking…are these really the best people to tell a Comanche story? Following the initial pitch, in steps Jhane Myers, a Comanche and Blackfeet American Indian who is known for her attention to detail and dedication to producing, Native language, and […] The post How Prey Sets a New Standard for Indigenous Representation With Producer Jhane Myers and Sunrise Tippeconnie – The Cinematic Schematic appeared first on The Cinematropolis.

After directing the critically acclaimed sequel “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Dan Trachtenberg began developing an idea for a new “Predator” filmed based on the existing property owned by FOX Studios. It was a long and arduous process but one that Trachtenberg was willing to take after he first fell in love with the original film when he was only in the sixth grade. He then teamed up with screenwriter Patrick Aison to craft an original story that didn't necessarily have ties to any of the other spinoff films, particularly the one being developed by another writer and director named Shane Black. Unfortunately, Trachtenberg's dream project soon became a bit of a nightmare after FOX was bought out and merged with Disney and that put his film into upheaval. Eventually the new powers-that-be at the studio gave Trachtenberg the greenlight but he was told that his film wouldn't get a theatrical release and instead would be a straight to streaming product for Hulu, which was building an audience under the Disney umbrella. That didn't stop Trachtenberg and company from making a film that felt far bigger than anything a streaming service could hope to contain as he centered his story around a Predator landing on Earth in the 1700s and it soon clashes with a Native tribe including one particularly strong willed girl who is determined to make the creature her first real kill…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to sharpen our axes and make sure to stay away from the mud pit as we review the 2022 film “Prey”….
