"We try to answer two questions before we say yes to a job or embark on a spec script: Why does the protagonist need this movie? And the other is: Why tell this story other than to make money? That was our attitude going into Jurassic World. That was our attitude going into Avatar," says screenwriter Rick Jaffa about how he and his writing partner Amanda Silver approach tackling a large film franchise.  On today's podcast, we sit down with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to discuss their blockbuster new film Avatar: Fire and Ash, the follow up to 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water. Husband and wife, the accomplished duo have also written and produced some of the biggest and most lucrative movies in Hollywood history, including the Planet of the Apes trilogy and Jurassic World. They generously share their techniques for worldbuilding, including doing tons of research to help keep the world grounded in science and fact, and always starting with character. They also share their mind-bending pitch for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. "What we said was, we want to take an ape from Pinocchio to Moses," says Jaffa. Silver adds, "Pinocchio meaning,  I want to be a real boy – to Moses – and leading his people to the Promised Land. And that was basically the pitch."  They also describe creating the exciting new Avatar character Varang (Oona Chaplin), of the Ash People and how she magically came to life on the page. "At first, when you don't know this character at all, and it's just a piece on a playing board to move around for your plot, you're trying to figure things out. But soon they hopefully start speaking for themselves… And then once we started writing her, we got through the first scene with her, we looked at each other and said, 'My God, the world's going to fall in love with this character!'" says Silver.  To hear more, listen to the podcast.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is a 2025 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Distributed by 20th Century Studios and produced by Lightstorm Entertainment, it is the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and the third installment in the Avatar franchise. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet reprise their roles from the previous films.Cameron, who had stated in mid-2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in early 2010 following the success of the first film, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a December 2015 release. However, the addition of two more sequels (four in total), and the development of new technology required to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ash started shooting simultaneously with The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming completed in late December 2020, after over three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of over $400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. The film is dedicated to editor John Refoua, who died in 2023, and producer Jon Landau, who died in 2024.Avatar: Fire and Ash had its world premiere at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on December 1, 2025, and was released theatrically in the United States on December 19, and has grossed $347.3 million. Critics praised the visuals, characters, performances, and action sequences, though many were divided on the plot, screenplay, and runtime.[b] Two additional sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in various stages of production and are scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

James Cameron has returned to take us on a third trip to Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash is now out in cinemas worldwide and I finally, FINALLY had the chance to see the film yesterday after a long week of packing and traveling. This has easily been one of my most anticipated films of the year and pretty easily so because back in September 2022, I fell in love with this franchise. Finally having the chance to see the first Avatar in cinemas during its theatrical release-release was a game-changing cinematic experience for me and completely changed my perspective on a film that I felt very lukewarm to before that point. And then in December, Avatar: The Way of Water became a smash box office hit and, as far as I'm concerned, surpassed the first film by almost every single measure of quality. So, is the magic and awe of Pandora still alive? Is Avatar: Fire and Ash the best film in the trilogy? Find out all the answers in this review!Avatar: Fire and Ash:Directed by: James CameronScreenplay by: James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda SilverStory by: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Shane SalernoBased on charaacters created by: James CameronProduced by: Jon Landau, James CameronExeucutive Producers: Richard Baneham, Rae Sanchini, Peter M. FitMama, I have a treat for you today! I brought on the brilliant minds behind The Dirty Laundry Podcast, Co-Hosts Amanda Silver and Alex Howard are talking about all things separation and divorce. With a strong belief in ditching the stigma and bringing information to the masses, they are on a mission to normalize separation and bring some levity to this difficult process. We did just that in today's interview with laughs, stories, serious talk and awareness about this often (and unnecessarily) shameful topic that is a part of reality for many FitMamas. My sister Alex Howard and I are children of divorced parents and her co-host Amanda Silver has gone through the divorce process and these two have made it their life's mission to ditch the stigma attached and make the experience a better one for their clients. Both women are family mediators who are leading experts in this area and are all about alternative dispute resolution and using the tools of communication, active listening, and probing questions to allow parties to explore their grievances and decide upon an agreement together. Separation can be a most difficult and confusing time for an individual and their families, and these two hope to alleviate some of that stress through their roles as Family Mediators. You are asked to co-write the next Avatar, but that movie needs to make over 2 billion dollars to break even – do you say yes? Really? No really? The last Avatar was 12 years ago… and movies, the movie business and movie-audiences have changed drastically since then. Would Avatar: The Way Water float like Rose… or sink like Jack? Rick Jaffa who along with his wife, Amanda Silver has penned The Planet of the Apes films, Jurassic World, Mulan – to name just a few - discusses James Cameron's brilliance, risk taking and legendary temper. ALSO: James Cameron sent Rick & Amanda so much information that Rick feared for his marriage. The mechanics of writing a movie that smashes box office records all over the world, from China, to Mongolia, to Slovakia and EVEN in war-torn Ukraine. How difficult is it to sit in a room and creatively write scripts with a man who admittedly will nail gunphones to the wall when interrupted? The behind-the-scenes story of how Rick and Amanda defied Hollywood and made a CGI chimp the star of their $100,000,000 blockbuster. Jason & Peter also enter the Titanic floating door debate and offer some brilliant solutions. Buckle up, listeners – we're heading to Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest movies of all time, and our guests today are two of its talented co-writers. You might know Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver as the screenwriters behind the brilliant Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and 2015's Jurassic World. If you're familiar with those movies, you'll know exactly why legendary director James Cameron chose the pair as collaborators for this sequel to his 2009 sci-fi fantasia – both of those franchises snuck sideswipes at man's exploitation of the natural world into their exciting set-pieces and blockbuster action. The Way of Water is a much more complex movie than the first Avatar, with a lot more moving parts, some of which are seeds for movies to come (this is the first in a number of sequels that Amanda and Rick have also worked on, in production now). The film picks up with our heroes from the first movie, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), fighting another battle fourteen years after the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains – parenthood. The pair have had a family and now have an even more pronounced reason to protect their land from the colonisers from Earth, seeking to make Pandora man's new home, having wrecked their own.Rick and Amanda – who have been married since 1989 and collaborating since 1992's The Hand That Rocks The Cradle – told us all about how the Way of Water's screenplay came together. We get into exactly how they, Cameron and fellow co-writer Josh Friedman brought back the villainous Colonel Quaritch, the Mowgli-esque origins of new character Spider, and the environmental truths about our own climate change-stricken world that the film takes aim at. There's also a thorough breakdown of that death in the film's final act, and Al at various points attempts to speak Na'vi. Badly, naturally.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Despite this movie having pretty favorable reviews among critics and incredibly favorable reviews among audiences, it pains us to be haters since we love movies so much and people aren't supporting new films the way we used to. It's led Dave to drink. He didn't get drunk because he turned 50, it's because an actual critic called Avatar: TWOF a "Smurfahontas Stodgeathon", which is horesheet.
