The Empire Podcast delivers yet another cracker this week, folks. Guest-wise, Chris Hewitt has a lovely Zoom chat with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the husband-wife screenwriting team who have become the producers and custodians of the Planet Of The Apes franchise. Here, Chris chats to the pair about how they revived the Apes franchise, how they became a partnership with The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, and their time working on Avatar sequels with James Cameron. [26:10 - 44:53 approx] Then, Daisy Ridley — Star Wars' Rey herself, and the star of this week's Young Woman And The Sea — pops into our studio to have a natter with Alex Godfrey about swimming, sand, and injuries. Oh, and she makes a desperate play for free Honest Burgers, one we can fully get behind. [1:06:17 - 1:22:44 approx] Then, either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to tackle a question from the Empire Podcast subreddit, discuss (most of) the week's movie news, including the latest casting for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and review Young Woman And The Sea, giant alien spider horror Sting, and The Beast. Well, Chris, Helen and James haven't seen The Beast, so they recruit Beth Webb and Alex Godfrey to review that for them. Enjoy.

En 2017, War for the Planet of the Apes offrait une très bonne conclusion à la trilogie. You are asked to co-write the next Avatar, but that movie needs to make over 2 billion dollars to break even – do you say yes? Really? No really? The last Avatar was 12 years ago… and movies, the movie business and movie-audiences have changed drastically since then. Would Avatar: The Way Water float like Rose… or sink like Jack? Rick Jaffa who along with his wife, Amanda Silver has penned The Planet of the Apes films, Jurassic World, Mulan – to name just a few - discusses James Cameron's brilliance, risk taking and legendary temper. ALSO: James Cameron sent Rick & Amanda so much information that Rick feared for his marriage. The mechanics of writing a movie that smashes box office records all over the world, from China, to Mongolia, to Slovakia and EVEN in war-torn Ukraine. How difficult is it to sit in a room and creatively write scripts with a man who admittedly will nail gunphones to the wall when interrupted? The behind-the-scenes story of how Rick and Amanda defied Hollywood and made a CGI chimp the star of their $100,000,000 blockbuster. Jason & Peter also enter the Titanic floating door debate and offer some brilliant solutions. Buckle up, listeners – we're heading to Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest movies of all time, and our guests today are two of its talented co-writers. You might know Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver as the screenwriters behind the brilliant Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and 2015's Jurassic World. If you're familiar with those movies, you'll know exactly why legendary director James Cameron chose the pair as collaborators for this sequel to his 2009 sci-fi fantasia – both of those franchises snuck sideswipes at man's exploitation of the natural world into their exciting set-pieces and blockbuster action. The Way of Water is a much more complex movie than the first Avatar, with a lot more moving parts, some of which are seeds for movies to come (this is the first in a number of sequels that Amanda and Rick have also worked on, in production now). The film picks up with our heroes from the first movie, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), fighting another battle fourteen years after the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains – parenthood. The pair have had a family and now have an even more pronounced reason to protect their land from the colonisers from Earth, seeking to make Pandora man's new home, having wrecked their own.Rick and Amanda – who have been married since 1989 and collaborating since 1992's The Hand That Rocks The Cradle – told us all about how the Way of Water's screenplay came together. We get into exactly how they, Cameron and fellow co-writer Josh Friedman brought back the villainous Colonel Quaritch, the Mowgli-esque origins of new character Spider, and the environmental truths about our own climate change-stricken world that the film takes aim at. There's also a thorough breakdown of that death in the film's final act, and Al at various points attempts to speak Na'vi. Badly, naturally.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Avatar: The Way of Water is a 2022 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and TSG Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios, it is the sequel to Avatar (2009) and the second installment in the Avatar film series. Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald reprise their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in an additional role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement. In the film, Jake Sully (Worthington) and his family, under renewed threat from humans, seek refuge with the Metkayina clan of Pandora. Cameron stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it was successful, and he announced the first two sequels in 2010, following the widespread success of the first film, with the first sequel aiming for a 2014 release. However, the addition of two more sequels, for a total of five Avatar films, and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, preproduction, and visual effects. The filming process, which occurred simultaneously with a currently untitled third film, began in Manhattan Beach, California, on August 15, 2017. The filming location moved to Wellington, New Zealand, on September 25, 2017, and concluded in late September 2020 after three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of $350–460 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. Following repeated delays in the expected release schedule, Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in London on December 6, 2022 and was theatrically released in the United States on December 16, 2022 to positive reviews. Critics praised the film for its visual effects and technical achievements, but criticized the plot as thin and the runtime as lengthy. The film has grossed over $955 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2022. Organizations such as the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Avatar: The Way of Water as one of the top ten films of 2022. The film also received numerous other accolades, including nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

A first look at the new Microsoft service that leverages Windows 365 infrastructure to stream secure, ready-to-code developer workstations on demand. Setting up a dev box is extremely arduous for both geographically distributed and co-located development teams. As a developer, you're configuring different environments, weekly, and monthly, for new projects or team members. And it's not unusual for you to have costly over spec'd physical machines under your desk or hosted virtual machines set up for specific projects. As a developer, you may need to access and work with sensitive source code or elevated privileges on your local dev environments to install custom tools in SDKs. It can be a difficult task for IT to give developers the flexibility they need while keeping devices secure. Head of product for Microsoft's developer division, Amanda Silver, joins Jeremy Chapman to share the benefits of the new Microsoft Dev Box service; a self-service experience for quickly creating dev environments when you need them. And if you manage developer teams, you'll see how to efficiently configure and assign dev boxes that include the right tools for the job. ► QUICK LINKS: 00:00 Introduction 00:48 The benefit of Dev Box 03:12 How does Microsoft Dev Box work? 04:28 Developer experience of Dev Box 05:13 How to connect to your Dev Box 07:33 How to get it up and running 08:23 What is a dev box pool? 11:08 Security & Management of Dev Box 12:45 How to get started ► Link References: Get on the list for the public preview of Microsoft Dev Box: https://aka.ms/DevBox-SignUp ► Unfamiliar with Microsoft Mechanics? • As the Microsoft's official video series for IT, you can watch and share valuable content and demos of current and upcoming tech from the people who build it at Microsoft. This time, we're taking a look at the classic reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes and along the way we ask, how has Andy Serkis never won an Oscar, is this movie a really long vacation ad for California and just how plausible is a cure of Alzheimer's? Let's dive in… Cast & Crew Directed by Rupert Wyatt: His first film, The Escapist, was the darling of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and afforded him the opportunity to direct Rise of the Planet of the Apes Starring Andy Serkis as Caesar: Serkis has managed to carve out a career as an actor, producer and director. Following his motion capture performance in Peter Jackson's King Kong, Serkis was on the top of the list to give life to the main character of Caesar. James Franco as Will Rodman: Franco has had an interesting career to say the least. After rising to prominence on the television show Freaks & Geeks and later in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, Franco has also appeared on soap operas, stage and has tried directing several times. At this point in 2011, he was just coming off an Oscar nominated performance in 127 Hours. Tobey Maguire was actually the first choice to play Will Rodman. Freida Pinto as Caroline: This was one of four films Pinto appeared in during 2011 and had risen to international fame following her starring role in the Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire Also Starring: John Lithgow as Charles Rodman Brian Cox as John Landon Tom Felton as Dodge Landon David Oyelowo as Steven Jacobs From Tim Burton to Rupert Wyatt Believe it or not, this was not the first time 20th Century Fox attempted to reboot the Planet of the Apes franchise. Tim Burton had directed a remake of the original 1968 film that was released in 2001 and had starred Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter with Charlton Heston making a surprise cameo. The film was a critical disappointment as it currently holds a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes but managed to gross over $350 million. The journey to get the remake off the ground had taken close to 20 years and following the financial success of the remake, plans for a sequel were drawn but were cancelled with Tim Burton even going so far as to stating he'd “rather jump out a window” than return to direct a follow up. Fast forward to 2006 when screenwriting team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver began developing a script involving chimpanzees and genetic testing. That script would eventually become Rise of the Planet of the Apes and kick off a reboot franchise as they were quickly becoming a trend in Hollywood starting with films like Batman Begins and Casino Royale. Jaffa and Silver had the daunting task of rebooting an iconic franchise but decided to go back further and explore the genesis of a world dominated by intelligent apes. They worked backwards from the mythology mentioned in the film including the first ape named Caesar and that the first uttered was “no”. Andy Serkis and the Art of Performance Capture   Andy Serkis has widely been recognized as a pioneer of performance capture following his performance as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings film series and as Kong in Peter Jackson's King Kong. While this recognition hasn't translated to awards as the Academy doesn't recognize performances like those, he has been cited for not only his performances but also his contributions to the technology required of performance capture and his work as he coached his fellow performers in his films. While performance capture is used sporadically in Hollywood, it has become the norm for actors in video games with games like The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption II, L.A. Noire, God of War (2018) and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice being recognized as prime examples of utilizing performance capture for maximum effect. Hopefully one day, the Academy or other major awards will begin to recognize the power and work that can come from these type of performances. Who's the Better Villain?
