THE PLANET OF THE APES series has become an institution. For whatever reason, audiences get a kick out of seeing intelligent apes taking over the world. With the 2011 reboot film, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the series took off once more after being dormant for many years. The fourth film in the reboot, THE KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2024), was recently released to some acclaim.Intelligent chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) sees his village destroyed and his clan taken prisoner by renegade apes. He goes off to save all he can. On his journey, he is joined by Raka (Peter Macon), a Bornean orangutan, and Mae (Freya Allan), a human, and their journey leads them to Proximus (Kevin Durand) who has set up a coastal ape city where Noa's clan may have been taken to.The film is directed by Wes Ball, written by Josh Friedman, inspired by the novel by Pierre Boulle. Besides Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon, and Kevin Durand, the film's cast includes William H. Macy, Dichen Lachman, and Travis Jeffery. Receiving good reviews from critics and audiences alike, your co-hosts take a look at the latest film in the franchise and gives their thoughts.
It's the film everybody hated the ending of when it came out, but are there some redeeming qualities about Spielberg's alien epic? Nostalgia Critic takes a look at Tom Cruise's, War of the Worlds. War of the Worlds is a 2005 American science fiction action-thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp, based on H. G. Wells' 1898 novel, The War of the Worlds. Tom Cruise stars in the main role alongside Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, and Tim Robbins, with narration by Morgan Freeman. It follows an American dock worker who must look after his children, from whom he lives separately, as he struggles to protect them and reunite them with their mother when extraterrestrials invade Earth and devastate cities with giant war machines.

What a wonderful day! Hayley has made her way out west for an LCD Soundsystem concert, which means your intrepid hosts are in the same room recording live in person for the very first time, as we took our best gals to see 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on laser IMAX at the old SilverCity Coquitlam on a great trip through the many suburbs of Vancouver. And because they were in the room listening along during the recording anyway, J Mo and Haylz are joined on the mic by their respective life partners (platonic or otherwise) as Sydney Beaudin and Ashley Olson make their triumphant podcast debuts. It's an off-brand episode as we break the format to talk about a movie we saw in theatres, recorded mere hours after we had all just seen it. Directed by Wes Ball, written by Josh Friedman, and starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, Travis Jeffrey, Lydia Peckham and William H. Macy, Kingdom has a tough act to follow in the Caesar trilogy but still manages to offer its own unique thrills thanks in no small part to its overgrown ruin, post-apocalyptic setting. It's also a perfect demo reel for Ball to show he was the perfect choice to make a live action Legend of Zelda movie. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is of course currently in theatres everywhere, and will no doubt be streaming on Disney+ about five weeks from now. Other works discussed in this episode include Videodrome, The Fly, Crimes of the Future, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Scanners, Cosmopolis, Maps to the Stars, A Dangerous Method, The Maze Runner, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Lord of the Rings, Abigail, Real Steel, Deadpool & Wolverine, I.F., Harold & The Purple Crayon, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Twisters. We'll be back next week recording separately from our respective provinces as we welcome Mad Max: Fury Road into the podcast canon. That one is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. You can also grab it for $5 on Blu-ray from the discount bin at your local Walmart. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

En 2017, War for the Planet of the Apes offrait une très bonne conclusion à la trilogie. We are so much more then what we are assumed to be on the surface....On this very special episode we dive into the realm that is short film and take a look at a piece that was shortlisted for the BAFTA's and the Academy Awards. It's time for 'The One Note Man'.A musical man lives a careful life. Each day is like the next, just how he likes it. One day, however, misfortune and fate collide, breaking his routine and rocking his world forever. In our increasingly dour, serious and stressful world; 'The One Note Man' is a simply but glorious experience of individuality and humanity that will staple a smile on your face so fast you may never shake it off. It's a beautiful piece of cinema and a testament to the importance of the short form of filmmaking. We had the unique please of sitting down with Writer/Director George Siougas and Executive Producer Josh Friedman to talk about the origins of it all, the importance of short form cinema and ultimately always trying to live our dreams.
As a production assistant first coming up in the film and television industry in New York, Josh Friedman always saw his fellow crew members not as job competition, but as collaborators. Once he'd moved up to assistant director, Josh decided to share what he'd learned as a PA, and wrote "Getting It Done: The Ultimate Production Assistant Guide." His number one advice to production assistants is to listen. “More often than not, everybody is so excited to be the hero, to be the problem solver, to speak up and get the attention.” says Josh. “But they don't hear everything that's being asked. So this might be a two-part question. And they're only answering the first part without hearing the second part, which is actually more important.” With Crew Me Up, Josh and his partners have created a new job and networking app that connects filmmakers and production crew to film and TV jobs posted across different regions. It all started when he had to replace a crew member while on a shoot in Texas, and had a very hard time finding anyone local who could work. Crew Me Up allows users to build a profile that hosts information such as their availability calendar, resume, website and IMDB page. Instead of job listings that people apply for, users can directly find other members on the platform, and hire them directly. They can also join Crew Me Up groups, where there's many active film communities. The app also provides vendor and services listings for camera rentals, post production, and more across different regions. Sometimes, our podcast is slightly more based in story. Other times, we really nerd out. This one is DEFINITELY more of the latter, so bring your note book! Dr. Josh Friedman is a Psychologist by trade who brings multiple decades of experience to our show today. He recognized that many patient's needs were not being properly met early on into his career. Instead of just accepting things as they were, he dedicated himself to studying more and more in order to figure out how he could best serve the people he worked with. Because of his dedication, he has a very unique set perspectives when it comes to dealing with mental health naturally (he even went through FDN)! Our main focus for this podcast, though, will be Dr. Friedman's favorite method for supporting individual's mental health: amino acid therapy. If you haven't ever heard of this before, or even if you just know very little about it, buckle up! This episode will completely change your perspective on how simply you can get those with even severe mental health issues feeling better in a short period of time. We hope you enjoy this episode, and ask always, any questions can be asked @fdntraining on Instagram. Just DM us! **LINK** to the Amino Acid Therapy Chart Dr. Friedman Mentioned: Click HERE. Passionate about helping those with mental health issues get well and stay well naturally? Functional Diagnostic Nutrition could be a great fit for you! Visit fdntraining.com/call to talk with one of our Course Enrollment Advisors. WORK with Dr. Friedman: https://moodhealing.com/ About Dr. Friedman: Dr. Josh Friedman earned his doctorate in Psychology from New York University and did post-doctoral training in Psychoanalysis from the Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology (TRISP) in New York City. After working in the field for a few years, he realized that something was missing from traditional mental health treatment. Curiosity and a chance meeting led him to discover the world of Nutritional Psychology, which teaches that many psychological issues are caused or made worse by underlying biochemical/nutritional deficiencies. Along the way he became certified as a yoga teacher, incorporating the emphasis on breathing techniques, meditation and movement into his work, as essential tools for working with mental health at the deepest levels. To enhance his effectiveness in helping people heal and grow, he became certified as a Holistic Health Counselor at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and went on to earn a Diploma of Comprehensive Nutrition (Dip.CN) from Huntington College of Health Sciences. He has been lead to go deeper into the biochemistry of mental health by becoming a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, a Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and studying with mental health nutrition greats such as Julia Ross, MA, Dr. Charles Gant, MD, and Dr. William Walsh, Ph.D. Dr. Josh started Alternative Mental Health Solution to help people find and fix the ROOT causes of their mental health struggles.
Buckle up, listeners – we're heading to Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest movies of all time, and our guests today are two of its talented co-writers. You might know Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver as the screenwriters behind the brilliant Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and 2015's Jurassic World. If you're familiar with those movies, you'll know exactly why legendary director James Cameron chose the pair as collaborators for this sequel to his 2009 sci-fi fantasia – both of those franchises snuck sideswipes at man's exploitation of the natural world into their exciting set-pieces and blockbuster action. The Way of Water is a much more complex movie than the first Avatar, with a lot more moving parts, some of which are seeds for movies to come (this is the first in a number of sequels that Amanda and Rick have also worked on, in production now). The film picks up with our heroes from the first movie, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), fighting another battle fourteen years after the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains – parenthood. The pair have had a family and now have an even more pronounced reason to protect their land from the colonisers from Earth, seeking to make Pandora man's new home, having wrecked their own.Rick and Amanda – who have been married since 1989 and collaborating since 1992's The Hand That Rocks The Cradle – told us all about how the Way of Water's screenplay came together. We get into exactly how they, Cameron and fellow co-writer Josh Friedman brought back the villainous Colonel Quaritch, the Mowgli-esque origins of new character Spider, and the environmental truths about our own climate change-stricken world that the film takes aim at. There's also a thorough breakdown of that death in the film's final act, and Al at various points attempts to speak Na'vi. Badly, naturally.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. After Jeff, John, and Dave rant about how critics are doing film-goers a great disservice (Owen Gleiberman, click-baiting Avatar haters), the boys discuss Avatar: The Way of Water. Despite this movie having pretty favorable reviews among critics and incredibly favorable reviews among audiences, it pains us to be haters since we love movies so much and people aren't supporting new films the way we used to. It's led Dave to drink. He didn't get drunk because he turned 50, it's because an actual critic called Avatar: TWOF a "Smurfahontas Stodgeathon", which is horesheet. And because it eases the pain of being alive as a human, as opposed to a Na'vi. Anyway, our job is to keep it positive, and we mostly do! We get critical- with love- in the spoiler section, but crack a tinny and spend some time with us. Does the subplot about our heroes being framed as spies for China stealing national secrets have parallels to real life events? Did Evel Kinevil ever jump his stunt bike over a mushroom cloud? Tim Westmyer (@NuclearPodcast) and returning special guest Kevin answer these questions and more. Nearly thirty years after his death, Isaac Asimov's acclaimed Foundation series—long deemed unfilmable—has been adapted for the screen. Co-created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman for Apple TV+, season one of Foundation recently concluded with its tenth episode, and seven more seasons have been proposed (season two is already confirmed). The production itself is an impressive feat; Asimov's mythology is remarkably expansive, encompassing an entire galaxy over the course of a millennium and including a host of characters and locations. Another challenge for the writers is that while Asimov was a brilliant science fiction world-builder, his plotlines—though at times riveting—do not achieve the humane depth required for inspiring significant admiration, empathy, or repulsion towards any of the characters. Ultimately, what Goyer, Friedman, and their team have produced is not a faithful adaptation of the source material; the broad strokes of the story remain, but it has essentially been reinvented with engaging human complexities, intriguing subplots and backstories, and diversification of the characters. Throughout the premiere season of this thorough revamping (dare I say, enhancement?) of the Foundation saga, several interesting philosophical themes are explored. These include intergenerational justice (specifically, our moral obligation to people of the very distant future), the existence and nature of the soul, and our longing for a grand narrative that gives life significance and makes sense of the human condition. Like all good science fiction, Foundation goes far deeper than exciting, futuristic story settings and flashy starship battles; it offers thoughtful viewers plenty of big ideas to ponder. The few discussed here—intergenerational justice, the nature of the soul, the human need for a grand narrative of existence, and the power of myth—fit beautifully within the worldview of Christian theism, but they're deeply problematic for a materialist paradigm. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Melissa Cain Travis about her spoiler filled online-exclusive article, “Religious Robots and Other Curiosities: Exploring Philosophical Themes in Apple TV's Foundation Series.”https://www.equip.org/article/religious-robots-and-other-curiosities-exploring-philosophical-themes-in-apple-tvs-foundation-series/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/early-access-to-online-exclusive-articles-faqs/We'd also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal.
