“Hustle culture” has been a term for the past decade or so. It somehow became a badge of honor to prove that you're working the hardest, longest, and most stressful job around. You can handle it, you're making money, putting in the hours, but what do you have left at the end of the day? This constant grind is what Mindy likes to call the “death race to FI” due to its unnecessary harshness on your free time, relationships, and mental health.Pete McPherson foresaw this “hustle culture” taking over his life when he quit his sixty-hour week accounting job and decided to start his own business. This wasn't the first, or second, or fiftieth time Pete had started a business, and he was driven to never set foot in an office again. He wasn't making phenomenal money the first year, but he made enough to provide for his family, and that was enough for him.Mindy and guest host Sarah Putt from OT 4 Lyfe talk with Pete about the rarely discussed downsides of chasing early retirement and financial independence. Make no mistake, even if you decided to work twenty hours a week, like Pete, you can still make plenty of money all while being able to watch your favorite movies in the middle of the day or spend time with your kids!In This Episode We CoverThe detriment of “hustle culture” and why working hard doesn't mean burning yourself out The importance of having an available safety reserve in case you get let go from a jobJumping into entrepreneurship and developing the grind to make it workLearning from your mistakes and seeing every failure as a lessonPicking your “good enough” number and living life on your termsWhy time freedom is the ultimate goal of FI, not exorbitant wealth And So Much More! Pete McPherson & I immediately connected on our journey away from “The American Dream” and that’s why I’m so excited for you to listen in today. Pete is the founder of Do You Even Blog? An award-winning blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to helping creators build impactful and profitable online businesses. Upon meeting Pete, I immediately resonated with his journey out of corporate and his struggle to make his side-hustle succeed. We both gave up the idea that we were supposed to get day-jobs, work our way up, and make a lot of money -- with the price being all of our freedom. Today, we’re going to talk about Pete’s struggles, failures, and everything he overcame in order to finally find success in this industry and how others can do the same. Let’s get into it! Pete and I talk about: Pete’s journey from being a CPA/Accountant to a full-time podcaster and blogger How Pete’s road to success came from trying again and again...and again Pete’s effective advice on growing your email list The important question you should ask yourself about your dream business Pete’s advice for those struggling to get traction in their side hustle The belief Pete had to change about himself to get where he is today My favorite quotes from Pete: “It's not the fancy website. It's not the fancy microphones that we paid $400 for. It's not the super complicated outreach pitch emails that we scripted word for word it's us being humans, building real relationships and having experience. You have to have that part experience to understand your audience and your offer” “something that I think really only comes from experience and launching products and failing, trying to sell services and failing, trying to grow a blog, traffic downloads, email lists and failing is enough experience to get clarity.” “Keep an open mind and always keep an eye out for what is working in addition to the like, okay, that didn't work. Why not? Or that didn't work time for the next thing.” “There is no one path for everyone. There's just not, there might be some that are fairly similar, but it's not exactly the same. And so it takes time to figure out your path.” [fusebox_transcript] Bio: Pete McPherson is the founder of Do You Even Blog, an award-winning blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to helping creators build impactful (and profitable) businesses on the internet. We get emails all the time about people wondering how to start their own blogs and how to make money from a blog. The first thing I will tell them is it is definitely not a get-rich-quick business, it takes a ton of effort and a little bit (or a lot) of time. Truth-be-told, I started Money Peach in March 2015 and didn’t see any revenue at all until December of that same year. I would imagine I put in close to 1,000 hours of blogging...not a great hourly rate in the beginning, right?! Now, I definitely don’t share this to scare you away from blogging, because just like anything in life...the reward is often worth the wait! Today, I am extremely grateful that the newbie blogger in 2015 never gave up. Today Money Peach provides a very incredible income for our family and it wouldn’t have ever happened with the labor of love in the very beginning. But what about you and your blog, right? This is why I am bringing on my good friend Pete McPherson - founder of “Do You Even Blog?” and an absolute expert and all-star when it comes to starting and monetizing your next blog idea. Pete has been a blogger for over a decade and has literally had over 40 failed blogs before reaching a ton of success with Do You Even Blog? Therefore, Pete knows a thing or two when it comes to starting a blog, growing a blog, and our favorite - MAKING MONEY through a blog. In fact, Pete is now generating just under $10,000 per month with his blog he started just 14 months ago. In this episode, Pete and I talk about... • How to get started even if you’re not quite sure where to start • The best places to start for FREE • Pete’s three tier approach to monetizing a blog • Why Pete spends so much time building out the FREE stuff first on his blog • How to monetize your blog when you have very little traffic • The biggest mistakes newbie bloggers make and how to avoid them All the show notes, links and anything Pete and I mentioned can be found at https://www.moneypeach.com/session111

Don’t think you can afford to live a life you’ve designed yourself? Think again! Pete McPherson from Do You Even Blog shares how he risked it all to live a life with more meaning. Long description: As I mentioned at the beginning of this episode, I ended up randomly meeting Pete McPherson from Do You Even Blog at a party at FinCon this past October. I liked him right away. He was so friendly, funny and full of energy. So when he non-pitched me to be a guest on my show, I couldn’t resist! And what’s even better, I was a guest on his show, the Do You Even Blog Podcast (listen to my episode here). In this episode, we talk about how Pete made the risky move of leaving his cushy corporate job to do something crazy and start his own online business. Now, you may be thinking, why did he do this? Especially when he has a family? Well, it really came down to him wanting to start living a life that had more purpose and that he designed himself. Up until he made that change in his life, he felt like he was making choices based on what he thought he was supposed to do, not what he wanted to do. And because of that, he felt unfulfilled. Money really doesn’t buy you happiness. It’s a tool, and it’s up to you to use it the way you want. You can either earn money doing something you don’t really like, and then spend that money on stuff you think will make you happy (even if for a limited time). Or, you can take the risk to do something else, earn less, but spend the money you do earn to live a life that’s more intentional. This idea of intentional living and designing your own life has become a bit of a theme on the podcast, and I think for good reason. The more millennials I talk to, the more I see a big shift happening. We’re realizing that the dream of a white picket fence, two cars and a stable job just isn’t cutting it anymore. We want more. And not more stuff, more out of life. As Pete mentioned, he has made some special videos for all my listeners at doyouevenblog.com/momoney, so make sure to check them out.
