Things that can be reset: timers, bones, electronic devices. Other things that can be reset: bantercasts featuring the BBC's youngest and most relevant broadcasters. For this year, Messrs Elis James and John Robins hit the big reset button, and changed to a groundbreaking linear podcast-first broadcast-second podcast way of broadcasting, something that most had previously thought impossible. After John had introduced the show in cod-Shakespearean describing 5 Live's annual social, there were flickers of hope. When Tony Blackburn stopped by ostensibly to read from his masterwork Poptastic!, but ended up laying into Dave's latest jingle, there were tremors of belief. And when Elis explained how John was once sacked for sadness from Deal or No Deal, the writing was on the wall; this new way of broadcasting was working. The reset was complete. So sit back and bask in the best bits of the Elis James and John Robins podcast since The Great Reset. And we'll be back with regular programming on Friday.Your top notch correspondence has been one of the best parts of the show, so keep on sending it in to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp the show on 07974 293 022.
Here we are for episode 572! In which Paul and Martin discuss two further years of pop hits from the 1950s - 1958 and 1959! Of course, Ikk also joins us to sing his version of some of these chart-toppers! Our next episode, #573 sees two different road-trips heading on out for the day; with varied levels of success! Oh, and we also meet Silent Simon! Well, kind of we do! Email us at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have any comments - you can even send me a sound-file and I'll include it. The music is by Shy Yeti and Luca. Sound effects by Paul C and Soundbible. All other content of this episode is Copyright Paul Chandler, 2022. Episode 572 was recorded between the 11th and 12th May 2022, with an additional scene with Paul and Cromitty re-recorded on the 11th September 2022.
My guest in this episode is Jeff Smith, MP. A recent press article highlighted that the number of ‘career politicians' in Westminster who have never had what most of us would recognise as ‘a proper job'. It also said working class politicians were ‘an endangered species. I'm delighted to say that Jeff bucks both of those trends. Whilst Jeff grew up in a political household and studied Politics at Manchester University being an MP was never in the plan, as can be seen by his subsequent career choice. After graduation he became the Entertainments Officer for Manchester Students Union which led on to a career as an event manager and DJ. He performed regularly at V Festival and numerous club nights including Poptastic in Manchester and Star in Leeds. He had lived almost all his life in Manchester and in 1997 he started to combine his DJ work with being a member of Manchester City Council. This eventually led in 2015 to an unexpected opportunity to become the MP for his ‘home seat' of Withington in Manchester and he successfully regained the seat for Labour (from the Liberal Democrats). Last December, he was appointed as Shadow Minister for Sport, Tourism, Heritage and Music, a role for which he is clearly uniquely qualified. Jeff's musical tastes and choices are as interesting as his CV. Like me he is a Springsteen devotee, and he gets a special Music Talks Award for choosing my favourite ever song – Thunder Road . His song choices are:60's All My Loving The Beatles 70's Thunder Road Bruce Springsteen 80's What Difference Does It Make? The Smiths 90's 12 Reasons Why I Love Her My Life Story00's Grey Day (Paper Faces Mix) Zoot Woman10's Love Song Lana Del Rey20's I've Got You Under My Skin Frank Sinatra

Today we are catching up with Conor Collins, a Visual Artist based in Manchester, England, who is known for making artworks using unconventional materials such as diamond dust, blood, and hate speech found on social media. He first moved to Manchester to study, and it was here that he found Poptastic, a club night targeted mainly at students that played an eclectic mix of music. We caught up to discuss getting comfortable with rejection, sleeping with your school bully, and pee-shyness (which seems to be a recurring theme on this show!). Did you ever go to Poptastic, or have any memories of Manchester's Canal Street that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! Bonus points for embarrassing photos! You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - @lostspacespod And, whilst you're at it - go give Conor some love - his website can be found at https://www.conartworks.com/, and he is on Instagram and Twitter @conartworks.

Managed to nab the great Chris Hughes (T4F producer & Merrick from Adam & The Ants) for a 2 hr interview recently. As John Lennon once remarked in song "Life is what happens to you while you're trying to finish episode 2 on a series of Tears For Fears podcasts.." (slight paraphrase there)Apologies - work, family, hospital stay (NOT the dreaded C-19) got in the way. But nothing (I say NOTHING) will deter us in our quest following Roland & Curt through the 80s jungleland to pop perfection (and horrific hairstyles - even for the 80s).Songs included;Mothers TalkShout! Note: THE FIRST 15 SECONDS ARE A JOKE! STICK WITH IT!!!And we are back! Back!! BACK!!! with an act very much defined by this glorious decade; Tears For Fears. Not picked purely cos their hometown is located not 30 miles from 80sography Central. If location was the definer then this would be part 1 of 4 of Douggie Alsopp’s Banjo Ragtime Razzamataz combo from Lechlade. And it’s not (that's further down the line between Huey Lewis and The Cure*).First up we explore the early years of Roland and Curt; the ska-inflected/infected early band, the failed singles, the breakthru single and The Hurting LP. And more besides (including b sides). For over 30 years, John Hamilton has been Mr Poptastic in Manchester’s Gay Village. Currently bar owner of Bar Pop on Canal Street, he’s perhaps best known as the founder of Poptastic, a gay club synonymous with 90s/early 2000s gay Manchester. As Viva La Diva, you can still catch John entertaining the masses at one of Canal Street’s most popular bars every single week. We spoke to John the week before Manchester Pride 2019 about the ups and downs of his first 30 years in Manchester.
Doyenne of Manchester's gay scene for MANY years, John Hamilton is known to all and sundry as 'Mr Showbiz' as he's organised many a mad party night! I've known him for a long time, but do I really know him? No! Listen in and find out what John really is, behind the glitter and sequins :-)
As well as potentially the most controversial and heated Sacred Cow ever, this week's podcast has John and Elis' best opening link too. Plus the duo discuss class, real ale, The Goonies, and Producer Dave's upcoming holiday. There's tales of petty squabbles and grudges alongside Winner Plays On, Textual Healing and more from Tony Blackburn's autobiography Poptastic. Remember you can get in touch with the boys on sunday@xfm.co.uk if you want to get involved, and you can listen live every Sunday from 10am til 1pm on Xfm.

Rewind 30 years to the 1980s. Hairstyles may best be forgotten but the pop music of the time had more to recommend it. Punk was fading into softer, more electronic genres as music technology evolved. The ‘New Romantics’ emerged as a dominant force in music championing fantasy and the imagination with bands such as Spandau Ballet and Culture Club enjoying chart success. The early part of the decade saw a revival of Ska whilst the charts were later dominated by pop producers Stock Aitken Waterman. Take a trip down music memory lane and recall the significance of the 80s on the music scene. Speakers include Gary Kemp (musician, songwriter and actor) and Pauline Black (lead singer of The Selecter, song writer, broadcaster and author). The event will be chaired by Robert Elms (writer and broadcaster).
