In this episode, Dr. Justin Grimes, founder and CEO of Stick With It and Apply to Graduate School, shares his expertise on enhancing graduate school enrollment through strategic enrollment management (SEM). Drawing on his extensive experience in higher education and diversity, equity, and inclusion in graduate education, Dr. Grimes offers practical strategies and insights for institutions looking to navigate and improve their graduate enrollment processes. Key Discussion Points: The State of Graduate Enrollment: · Recent reports show a 6.9% decrease in graduate enrollment over the past decade, with engineering experiencing a 16.1% drop. · This decline is notably significant among underrepresented minority and domestic students. Differentiating Recruitment and Enrollment: · A clear distinction between graduate admissions (reviewing applications and making enrollment decisions) and recruitment (actively attracting and engaging with prospective students). · Effective recruitment involves orchestrated communication and marketing to a diverse group of potential students. Marketing, Sales, and Value Proposition: · Institutions must understand their value proposition and ensure public perception aligns with their identity. · Marketing strategies should target potential students and clearly communicate the benefits and outcomes of the graduate programs. Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM): · SEM is a comprehensive process to achieve optimal recruitment, retention, and graduation rates. · It encompasses marketing, recruitment, and admissions, considering the academic context of the institution. Stages of the Enrollment Funnel: · An outline of various student types in the enrollment funnel: Potential Students, Prospective Students, Applicants, Admitted Students, and Enrolled Students. · Each category requires tailored strategies and communication. Pathway Opportunities and Community Partnerships: · Establishing partnerships with community colleges, HBCUs, and other organizations can create seamless transitions for underrepresented students into graduate programs. · Examples include FUSE at the University of Georgia and the Graduate Feeders Program at Florida A&M University. Recruitment Strategies and Data: · Utilizing data to understand trends, gaps, and future directions is crucial. · Institutions should analyze their demographics, faculty representation, and peer comparisons to identify areas for improvement in diversity and inclusion. Differences Between Recruiting for Masters and Doctoral Students: · Master's recruitment should focus on the immediate career benefits and ROI, while doctoral recruitment should emphasize research opportunities and expectations. Three Key Takeaways for Higher Education Presidents and Boards: Allocate student resources effectively to support areas crucial for student success, like counseling, childcare, and housing. Analyze data to identify equity issues, especially in funding, and understand recruitment trends. Develop a strategic plan to address recruitment needs, involving alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners. Final Thoughts This episode provides valuable insights for higher education leaders looking to enhance their graduate school enrollment strategies. Dr. Grimes' expertise offers a comprehensive understanding of SEM, emphasizing the importance of tailored recruitment, strategic partnerships, and data-driven decision-making in increasing graduate school enrollment. I was interviewed by Julie Rose for her "Stick With It" series where I open up about my personal journey of facing uncomfortable situations, particularly one where my identity as a feminist conflicted with my role as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I share the emotional and challenging experience of reaching out to someone within my faith for an interview, only to be rejected based on my online writings. The rejection not only felt personal but also challenged my sense of belonging within my faith community. I describe my initial gut reactions, the subsequent email exchanges, and the ultimate resolution between us. This episode explores the complexities of identity, stereotypes, and the power of having difficult conversations. I hope listeners feel inspired to confront discomfort, seek understanding, and bridge gaps in their own lives. Hey there! I'm Jill Weisenberger … … a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, certified health and wellness coach and certifiable food lover. Changing my habits and thoughts brought me greater health and more joy. I've helped thousands of others improve their health too. I remember when I thought it was a personal weakness that my lunch started at a fast food restaurant and ended with chocolate. Why didn't I simply do what I knew was right? After some soul-searching and a few (or a lot) of missteps, I did. Bit by bit, I created my healthy habits and a bucket of energy by setting myself up for success, relying on solid routines, changing my mindset, and dropping that useless view that eating and exercise are either all good or all bad. With relief, I discovered that not eating perfectly isn't a personal weakness. I can help you too. Building good habits can be hard. Half of dieters give up within one week of starting. So what is the answer to lasting change? How do you make it easier to achieve? Dr. Sean Young studies behavior change. He's helped people develop good eating, sleeping, and exercise habits. He literally wrote the book, “Stick with It: A Scientifically Proven Process for Changing Your Life-for Good.” In episode #211, I covered how to break bad habits. So in this episode of Best in Wealth, we're going to cover how to stick with it and build good habits in 2023. [bctt tweet="How do you “stick with it” and build good habits for the new year? Find out in this episode of Best in Wealth! #wealth #retirement #investing #PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning #RetirementPlanning #WealthManagement" username=""] Outline of This Episode [1:29] What are your good habits? [4:54] Step #1: Small steps beat big dreams [6:28] Step #2: Call for backup (do it with friends) [7:46] Step #3: Why is it important? [8:41] Step #4: Make it easy to accomplish [10:35] Step #5: Act before you think [12:23] Step #6: Make sure you reward yourself [13:58] Step #7: Build a routine [15:57] Answer these three questions Step #1: Small steps beat big dreams Focusing on small steps allows you to achieve goals faster. It keeps you happier and more motivated to keep trying because you get rewarded more frequently. Consistency is the most important part of building habits. It's not a habit when you aren't consistent, right? If you want to create a new habit, simplify the behavior to make it easily achievable. You're more likely to stick with it. Step #2: Call for backup Just like you need an accountability partner to break bad habits, you need one to help you develop good habits. Be around people who are doing what you're doing. Social support and competition foster change. If you want to become healthier, don't hang out at the bar—hang out at the gym. Spend time with people who are aligned with your goals. [bctt tweet="Just like you need an accountability partner to break bad habits, you need one to help you develop good habits. Find out why in this episode of Best in Wealth! #wealth #retirement #investing #PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning #RetirementPlanning #WealthManagement" username=""] Step #3: Why is it important? Why do you want to build this habit in the first place? When a doctor says, “Change your diet or you'll be dead in six months,” you're motivated to change. Why is making this change important to you? What answer(s) to this question will motivate you? Motivations around money, social connections, and health stick the most. Step #4: Make it easy The more hoops you have to jump through to accomplish something, the less likely you are to do it. When you're trying to break a bad habit, you want to make it as hard as possible to do that thing. It's the opposite with building good habits. What can you do to simplify it and make it easier? According to Sean's research, if you make it 3–20 seconds easier to start, you're more likely to do it. To make completing our morning workout easier, we set out our workout clothes on the bathroom counter. I'll even get our water bottles ready. [bctt tweet="What can you do to simplify a good habit to make it easier? I share some ideas from Sean Young's book, “Stick With It,” in this episode of Best in Wealth. Check it out! #wealth #retirement #investing #PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning #RetirementPlanning #WealthManagement" username=""] Step #5: Act before you think Don't try to change your mind so your behavior will change. Change your behavior and your mind will follow. People think...
When you encounter a perspective that contradicts your own, the natural instinct is to either shut down or push back. But staying with that discomfort can pay off. Maybe it deepens a relationship or leads to some fresh insight. Top of Mind is launching a new series called “Stick With It” where we talk with people about a time they encountered a perspective that felt challenging, chose to stick with that discomfort, and they're glad they did. In this episode, we speak with a couple of friends – one is Black, one is white – about embracing tough conversations as they wrote a book together about race. And host Julie Rose shares a “Stick With It” story of her own. I'm sure some of you knew this day would come! I can not finish this challenge without talking about journaling. My second episode of this podcast is How to Start a Journal Practice and Stick With It, which is the most listened to by far! So if you haven't started a journal practice yet, you may want to check that episode out. But I thought for this last day of the episode I would revisit a specific type of journaling which includes meditation. SAVOR THE GOOD Our brains are Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones. When you have a positive experience ...savor the experience. Try this: Sit in a comfortable position, lower your gaze or close your eyes and bring awareness to your breath. Notice on your inhale the cool sensation of your breath, then again on the exhale- the warm sensation. Spend a minute or so just focusing on the breath. Then think of a positive experience you had in the last 24 hours. Take a few minutes to remember the experience, recall the feelings you had, the details of the experience- the sights, smells, or sensations. This experience could be a quite small moment ex. watching the sunrise or a conversation you had. Then take 2 minutes to write about your experience. This activity helps us to shift our focus on the good we see and experience but all too often are quick to forget…SAVOR IT. Thank you to all that completed this challenge with me!!! Until next time, be well.

Most people are doing content just for the sake of doing content. Just because they “need to be out there” in front of their prospects. That has led to many people publishing what today's guest, James Carbary, calls #CommodityContent So how do we move away from that and create compelling thought leadership content? That's what we talked about in this conversation. Here are some of the #GoldenBoulders:

Another silent killer of your fitness journey is negotiation which by definition is "discussion aimed at reaching an agreement." We like to stay in the discussion phase but really struggle to move on to the agreement or decision phase. We so often say we are going to do something but then we allow ourselves an out by engaging in this back and forth, teeter totter type of mental game. MAKE A DECISION and STICK WITH IT. It's awfully simply, but not easy to actually execute. In this episode, Caleb breaks down the 3 primary ways in which we must make a firm decision with our fitness journey and how this will give you clarity and structure in order to move forward and reach your goals!

This week we get down with some PASSION. And during a pandemic, no less! While that is definitely challenging, we still all find ways to look into what it means and how to find it. The podcast is in four segments, and here’s this week’s breakdown: Segment 1: Rock Your Life with Amy: Amy asks a lot of questions this week. She also gets into not feeling passion at the moment, what this week's affirmation brought to her life, and how allowing herself to feel pushed her to get deeper to find what she is truly passionate about, and how you can too. When we are triggered, what is that showing us? Segment 2: The Interview: This week's it's with Wes Hurt, the founder of CLEAN Cause organic sparkling yerba mate drinks which provide 50% of all their profits to support recovery from alcohol and drug addiction through sober living scholarships which you can find out more about at clean cause .com. Wes is also a husband and father to two children and lives in Austin and is a recovering addict. Wes and I get really real really fast, which we both prefer. We talk about stripping away the layers to find what’s underneath the surface of exterior passions. Wes raises strong questions within this, too. He asks, “Would I be proud of what I do today if the pandemic eliminated next week? And how will I be seen by people, and the actions I made and the way I handled it, if it stopped? THAT is my new litmus test by the decisions I make.” We get into regrets, what makes our character, our places of purpose, powerlessness, and, yes- what truly matters and what we truly care about when we face death. Segment 3: Go Aff Yourself with Jill Faulkner of stickwithit.co. This week Amy and Jill talk about the company she founded and her passion for that. We get into hobbies and side hustles, music, and whether or not we lose passion in the process of doing the work, sometimes? The Aff this week seems beautifully prescient for the times we are living in right now. Allowing ourselves to feel overwhelming and powerful emotions moves us both to explore this idea in all its contexts. And we end with Jill thinking about recharging and giving, and what she needs now, and it follows perfectly with what Wes talks about in The Interview. This week’s Aff is: I Let Myself Feel. Segment 4: BYOBBB -Build Your Own Brand, Biz + Brain with Bijou Finney: We both feel depleted of passion and get real about our struggles with our brands and businesses. We dive into how this affects our brands and our businesses. We discuss the luxury of passion and the fight or flight response that can be attached. Bijou has been on an entrepreneur call and discusses the general climate of that, when products or services are not needed at this time. What do we do when passions feel extinguished? Our takeaway is to mix it up when we are feeling limited, and find time to fan your embers and take care of yourself. Please rate, review, and subscribe! Time to rock that BRAIN this week, and we could probably all use it with waht's going on in the world right now.... the virus, the shelter in place orders.... How are we coping and how can we maximize this time for our minds? The podcast is in four segments, and here’s this week’s breakdown: Segment 1: Rock Your Life with Amy: Amy explores what we can do with this time we've got on our hands, the habits we can build, the surrender that we are asked to make now, and how paying attention to our sleep can impact our brains. And Amy gets personal this week with a reframe realization of an issue she's had her entire life. Segment 2: The Interview: Art Markman, Ph.D. of Psychology and Professor at UT, author of several books including Smart Thinking and most recently, Bring Your Brain to Work, and he has the podcast "Two Guys on Your Head." Art is great at explaining how our brains function at times like we are currently experiencing. We cover motivations, emotions, habits, how not to make a decision about what we are “supposed to be feeling” right now, what we can do to leave work when we are working from home, and so much more. And what's most important right now? He says, "Take the time to rethink. Do I want to do things differently while I have the chance? [This time] is a really great chance to rethink the way that we interact with the people that are closest to us and to make that better." Learn more about Art HERE. Segment 3: Go Aff Yourself with Jill Faulkner of stickwithit.co. This week Amy and Jill talk about the effect that affirmations have had on our brains over the years of doing them; subconscious negative patterns of thought that we may choose because they are familiar; and Jill has a big aha! moment. This week’s Aff is: I Work With My Brain. Segment 4: BYOBBB -Build Your Own Brand, Biz + Brain with Bijou Finney: Bijou and Amy both have had cases of zombie brain; they cover sales in the time of coronavirus and how to focus on the clients you already have; how our brains work with choice; and ultimately, this week's grand takeaway about reframing and how we can work to find the good in any situation. In a week that can feel dark, we are working on rocking our LIGHT. In Amy's Rock Your Life, she talks about ketamine, finding our light, and how times of darkness can be the most important moments to go within and do the work to find our light and nurture it. The Interview is with Alli Waddell of Illumma Ketamine Infusion Clinic of Austin, and she speaks about her personal journey to mental health after depression, bulimia, and suicidal ideation, and how she has found her light and helps others find theirs. Go Aff Yourself with Jill Faulkner of stickwithit.co covers lightness in body and mind, and our aff this week is "I Step Into The Light." On Build Your Brand with Bijou Finney, we get into the very timely discussion of how businesses go through cycles of light and dark. BONUS content at the end: Austin360 Radio's interview with Alli to learn more about Illumma Clinic. More at amyedwards.com/blog.

In this special BONUS episode, you can prepare for coronavirus closures and get online learning tips for teachers and schools. Teachers and administrators listen up! In this candid interview, I chat with Jennifer Pearson, a tech coach who recently evacuated from China due to the Corona Virus. Jennifer's school has been relying on home learning and online learning with their students in China for several weeks now. Jennifer shares tips, tools, and best practices for this special situation. And it's not what you think! Jennifer helps us focus on the right things during this difficult time. FREE Webinar: Online Learning Tips for Teachers and Schools Jennifer and I will also be doing a FREE Webinar on this topic on Tuesday, March 10, at 4 PM CST. You can participate live and ask questions, or watch the recording. Either way, register here, so you don't miss it! REGISTER FOR THE FREE WEBINAR It's important to note the big differences between online learning "snow" days, and the seriousness of closing because of something like the Corona Virus. The time period could be much longer. And while we may use some of the same tools and strategies, the stress and emotions that students and teachers experience during a time like this will be very different. Let's remember Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Listen to the full interview: Below are tips and takeaways from Jennifer for facilitating home learning with students when your school campuses are closed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), or other extenuating circumstances. Jennifer says, "Get a plan!" We cannot sit back and just hope for the best. We need to have plans in place so we can react accordingly. Coronavirus Closures? Online Learning Tips for Teachers and Schools by Jennifer Pearson 1. Online Learning Doctrine In this new frontier of online learning, everyone will need a little guidance as to how things should work when schools are closed for long periods of time. Our school created an online learning doctrine very quickly in reaction to the coronavirus closures. A document outlining some basic guidelines for teachers from your school's administration will clear up any gray areas. A document informing parents what they can expect from the school during online learning would also be comforting to parents. 2. Get Comfortable Take a pic of your workspace, post it, and ask students to show you theirs. Show students what makes a good workspace, and how to create their own. 3. Choose a Platform and Stick With It. This platform should be one that students have used before, and one which they are comfortable. Google Classroom, Seesaw, OneNote, or Microsoft Teams are all useful. 4. This is NOT the Time for New Tech Tools! Students need routine and structure during this time. Their way of learning has been changed; their environment has been changed, their routine has been changed, do NOT introduce new tech tools, and expect students to use them for learning during the first month of Online Learning. You can have new content or new tech, not both. Go for the content at this difficult time in students’ lives. 5. Use a Checklist Post a checklist every day to help students make sure they do all of their work for the day. In a long feed of posts, it is easy for students to lose track and become unsure of what they’ve accomplished and have yet to accomplish. Checklists can look different depending on the platform. Here’s an idea to use in Google Classroom: Make a topic with the day of the week and everything that will be posted for the day. Specialists can access the Google Classroom and add to the topic. You can schedule the topic for the week and allow Specialists access to schedule all of their assignments for the week ahead of time. 6. Video, Video, Video! Your presence as a teacher and trusted adult in students’ lives is important to the daily routine. Your students miss you! You know your students are accustomed to your way of instructing, it helps them construct meaning. Your voice and presence is important for your students. They need to see and hear you every day. This does not mean a video conference with them every day. It means you record yourself saying, “Good Morning,” every day and recording video instructions every day. Keep it short, light, and cheery. No one needs a fifteen minute lecture video. Screencastify, Flipgrid, and even your iPhone screen recorder will work for this. 7. Reduce the Workload by Half I know this is not a popular idea. I don’t mean less Reading and less Math; I mean choose three subjects for the day. Monday may be Reading, Math, and P.E. Tuesday can be Science, Math, and Music. Wednesday is Social Studies, Art, and Reading. What you will soon come to find out about online learning is that it takes twice as long to do half as much. There are many reasons for this, but I challenge you as an adult to stay focused on the internet for three hours and see how many times you get distracted. Minds wander, comprehension breaks down, and it isn’t hard to get a digital hangover. 8. Consolidate Work Consolidate work as much as possible for students. Fewer clicks, fewer distractions. Try not to send them to tons of websites, sort through different databases, no WebQuests. Put everything you can into a Slide deck or a Nearpod lesson. Every time students have to go search for something, there’s a chance they will get distracted. 9. Capture Kids' Hearts Capturing kids’ hearts is essential during a time like this! Respond to their assignments with voice or video whenever possible. Teach them where to look for your response. If you want students to redo something, teach them the procedure for this too. 10. No Hard Deadlines. Everyone’s situation is unique and different during home learning. Johnny may not be able to do his assignment until mom gets home from work, while Susie has to do her assignment in the morning before her dad leaves for work. No two homes will be the same. Technology can also make it difficult for students to complete work on time. As the Technology Coordinator of a school, I’ve run into many tech problems in my own home during online learning that interrupted my work and my children’s schooling. The deadlines are not as important as the relationship you are saving by giving students grace. 11. Do Not Assign Partner Work. Again, everyone’s situation is unique and different. Stress levels will be raised if students not only have to worry about their own situation but also their partner’s home situation. 12. Get Away From the Computer as Much as Possible. All that screen time is bad for you and your students. Be creative with your assignments and incorporate their physical, living space. We have the opportunity to show the learner how to apply their knowledge to their everyday environment. For ideas, see my blogpost on Unplugging Home Learning. 13. Send Home a Weekly Email to Parents. In most home situations, parents will be trying to support their children in their learning. Especially for younger students, parents want to know what their child will be doing each week. An overview of their assignments or a simple check-in will assist parents who are trying to make home learning work. 14. Give Students Choice Choice boards and learning menus work great for this! Not only will offering choice engage students more, but it will also give options to parents who may not understand an assigned lesson. 15. Use a Video Conferencing Tool. Use a video conferencing tool to keep in touch with your students. Publish a weekly meeting schedule that gives students a daily option to join a meeting and send the schedule to parents in their weekly email. Leave this meeting as an option that anyone in class can join and have fifteen minutes of face time with their teacher and peers. You can use this time to clear up some misconceptions about an assignment or allow students to chat so they don't feel so alone. Some students will never join a meeting, and some will choose to meet every day. Grace and patience is the name of the game. Treat the entire situation with an open mind and heaps of grace and patience. Check out this online learning template from Nadine Gilkison: Make a copy of her template! FREE Online Learning Tools and Resources for Schools Affected Many companies, like Google, are making premium features and tools available to any schools that need them during this time. In this episode, I speak with Courtney Petaccio. Courtney is someone I met a long time ago and we’ve kept in touch through the years in terms of fitness, lifestyle, and even training tips. She is truly accomplished athlete… A bit of a cinderella story in terms of fitness. Like many, Courtney used to go through life not really worrying about fitness, nutrition, or a healthy lifestyle. On the outside, she looked like a healthy person, but on the inside, her fitness and nutrition choices were not doing her much good. Some of us can certainly relate I’m sure. Over the past 10 years, Courtney has become inspired to go above and beyond in her own fitness journey, as well as dedicating herself to motivating and helping others. One of the most extraordinarily fit people I know, Courtney has made a complete 180 and I was honoured to have the opportunity to hear a bit more about her story… Even though we are worlds apart, I consider her one of the biggest motivators on my own journey. Here are some of a few bullet points I took away from this conversation.. To hear more, be sure to check out episode 40 of the Breaking the Barrier Podcast! 1. There's so much more to health and a healthy lifestyle than the surface physical traits. Paying attention to the inside goes a long way. 2. Don't make excuses for yourself or others. They won't do you any good and won't advance you on your journey. 3. Role models can go a long way in helping you toward your goals. Just bear in mind that to copy anyone else's plan, may not be the best approach. Ethics is a great thing to emulate but make sure your plan is for YOU. 4. Part of the journey is not reaching your goals... That's ok. It teaches you to get back up and how to push through. Always get back up and learn the lesson. 5. Never stop learning. There's always something to pick up and there's always something that can help you improve your life, fitness, nutrition, etc... 6. Self control comes in many different forms. Identify what your weakness might be and try to work on it little by little. 7. If you can get past the point of not seeing results right away, it will become worth it like you wouldn't believe! STICK WITH IT! 8. Every day is a new day and you have the opportunity to figure out how you can be better than "yesterday". 9. Life can be a bit of a minefield but if you can try your best to stay positive, things will get better and the time you feel down will pass faster. 10. Be wary of wanting quick fixes and extreme diets/fitness trends. Take your time and be willing to be patient to get the best results. There is no one perfect fix and there are many different options. 11. Knowing your "why" is one of the most important aspects of setting goals for yourself. 12. Do what is best for YOU. Ep3. I'm learning folks. Every time I sit down to record with someone I find out something new. In this episode, I'm grateful to some advice from soon-to-be guest, Jason Dibbs, for telling me to always have a Plan B when recording.Today with Sheree there was a moment when I could have given up, could have said, 'Sorry Sheree, this just isn't going to happen in exactly the way I want it to.'But that's not what happened. This is a podcast about people who find a way, despite the obstacles, no matter what it takes. When I met up with Sheree we face background sound issues, memory card storage space issues and my own inexperience as a podcaster. We found a way though. So around the 22, 23 minute mark of this pod when there's a distinct change in the quality of audio, STICK WITH IT. What Sheree has to tell us is worth it.Her story is filled with courage and commitment. She is not afraid to make bold moves in her life, to take a risk. This is a great chat and I'm honoured that Sheree would share her stories with me.Do it up.You can catch up with Sheree and what's she's up to here:Keeping up with the Penguins - http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/Twitter - @shereestrangeHuffPost - https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/author/sheree-strange/Medium - https://medium.com/@shereestrangeAnd, Sheree MCs each month @ https://www.facebook.com/thesydneypoetrylounge/Thanks to:eight and a half for "Piece by Piece" - www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U_MC4mabNMTara Ward for the art and design - www.tarawardphotography.com.au/Podcast homepage - https://widtaabbqs.home.blog/

I feel like now is a good time to share my NUMBER ONE tip on how to stick to your resolutions with you. Are you ready? Wait for it… DON’T MAKE THEM! Yep….don’t make them! Why I Don’t Make Resolutions I don’t make resolutions anymore, I realised it made January all the more depressing when within a week….ok ok, within a day or two….my plan to ‘cut out carbs’ inevitably fails. Plus, living like that is not really living! You’re constantly in a state of deprivation, always focusing on what you ‘can’t’ have….it then inevitably becomes ALL you want and that is HARD…it’s also VERY unhealthy. A Negative Way To Start Your Year The way I see resolutions is that they tend to end up being ‘fault picking’ exercises and an excuse to just highlight everything you think is wrong with yourself. They are usually inherently negative. Not a great way to start your year off. Why We Can’t Stick To Resolutions Did you know that only 8% of us are actually successful at sticking to them?? 8%!! Why? A big reason is you’re leaving too much to chance. Resolutions are far too ‘fluffy’, they tend to not be either specific enough or measurable. Psychological research also shows that something called ‘ironic mental control’ exists and essentially means that the harder you focus on NOT doing something or being a certain way, it actually makes you do it more. They call it the white bear problem. When someone says ‘don’t think about a white bear’ what instantly comes to mind? And the more you try NOT to think about it, the stronger the image becomes. Normally we even set resolutions already believing we’re going to fail! We’re also not that into them! Know WHY You Want To Achieve Them If you don’t have a solid motivation, and a solid reason ‘why’ you want it then you’re more likely to give up or procrastinate. If you connect to WHY you really want something you’re FAR more likely to achieve it. Ask yourself how things would look for you this time next year if you DID achieve it and if you want it bad enough it will be SO much easier to motivate yourself. Can you see why it’s so difficult?! It Doesn’t Happen Overnight People expect to break habits OVERNIGHT which is near impossible, and when you ‘fail’ it can really damage your self worth. EVERY year since I can remember I essentially tried to starve myself in January and resolved to lose a stone in weight in a ridiculous amount of time. I’ve been through YEARS, at least half my life of yoyo dieting and i set myself up for failure time and time again by thinking that just by deciding it’s what I wanted then it would happen straight away. Shift Your Focus 2017 was the year that changed the cycle. I changed my thought process and shifted my focus, I didn’t focus on the negative thing I wanted to change, having too many spare tyres, and made a conscious decision to be more healthy. I’d been struggling with arthritis and Patellofemoral pain syndrome in my knees so I was always uncomfortable and in pain and something needed to change. I said at the beginning of the year I wanted to find an exercise I could do to improve the pain…and a nice little 20lb weight loss was an added bonus that came with it. So I ended up achieving what I wanted by attaching it to something that was actually positive, bigger and more important than wanting to be thinner. I started by making the decision to go to 2 Bikram yoga classes per week, I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a Bikram yoga class but let me tell you on days you have one of those (1.5 hours in 40 degree heat!) you will NOT want to drink in the day or even the day before, you will drink WAY more water than you would normally and you will NOT eat heavy meals! So you don’t feel like you’re going to pass out or be sick you will make MUCH healthier choices naturally with zero effort. Make Goals Instead Or Resolutions! Pick positive goals, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic (but don’t be afraid to dream big!) goals ideally that directly conflict with what you do want to give up and also allow you to create the new positive habits you want to create with far less effort. Make sure you add in WHEN you want to have achieved it by. So pick goals that REALLY motivate you! Get Accountable! If you’re intent on making this year the year that you finally achieve what you really want to then get an accountability buddy or hire a coach (personal trainer for health or personal development coach for everything else!) that can get you there. Resolutions tend to be BIG changes we want to make that can be overwhelming, but if you have someone to help you break it down into smaller steps and keep you accountable then you’re on your way to success! Use a journal or a habit tracker to keep you motivated and on the right track. There are lots of printable versions on Etsy or Pinterest that you can put up on your wall so you see it every day. Celebrate Celebrate every teeny tiny little win along the way, promise yourself a treat once you achieve it for motivation. I like to get people to do this when they’re setting goals, often they would hit them and then it would be straight onto the next one with no reflection or time to appreciate what you’ve achieved and the milestone that you’ve hit. It Takes Time Know that it will take time and you have to push through the hard bit to create the new neural pathways that allow you to form the new habits you need and THEN get you to the god stuff where it all becomes so much easier, it just becomes something you do. Give yourself that time and understand it’s not supposed to be an overnight shift, it WILL be hard, it WILL be effort but if it’s worth it to you then STICK WITH IT and appreciate you are retraining your brain and KNOW that eventually it will become second nature. If you want a head start with this then book your ticket for Positive Pants Planing Live now. The next 3 full price tickets purchased will get a bonus 45 minute 1:1 call with me. In this podcast, Professor Sean Young talks to Dr Raj Persaud about his bestselling book Stick With It, in which he analyses the science behind not just achieving our goals, but making lasting behaviour change. He argues that it is the process rather than the person that needs to change, and offers practical advice to help anyone successfully alter their actions and improve their lives.
I actually allowed for my listeners to take an exhale in this podcast because we redefined consistency. I encouraged my listeners to stop holding themselves to the unrealistic standards of someone else's definition of consistency, and to define it for themselves- and then to STICK WITH IT!

People often times know what they need to do to reach their goal, or know what the “right decision" is, but they still don’t do it. It’s that old knowing-doing gap idea. And much of the popular literature about how to create better habits and change your behavior, are, unfortunately, based on weak science. The good news is, there is solid scientific research on how to change behavior and stick with this new behavior...and we're going to discuss it in today's podcast. My guest, Sean Young, is on the leading edge of this research. Sean is Associate Professor at the School of Medicine at UCLA, a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, and Executive Director of the University of California Institute for Prediction Technology and the UCLA Center for Digital Behavior. Sean's new book, "Stick With It," details a "scientifically proven method for changing your life -- for good."
The key is how to SUCCESSFULLY begin a Weight Lifting Program, so that you STICK WITH IT. Details in this episode!
Leneen Faith is a wife, mom of three, elementary school teacher, author, and CEO. Despite her full plate, she continues chasing her dream of inspiring children to be kids of character! The dream nearest and dearest to her heart is her children’s brand, The Adventures of Peacebe and the Heartwatch. Peacebe is currently an 8-book character education series that’s already in 20 schools. However, Leneen’s dream is for her brand to become a cartoon on a major cartoon network. Leneen is a firm believer that you can never be too busy to chase your dream and fulfill your purpose. TWEET: “Learn ways to inspire #children to have good #character with #LeneenFaith” Chasing the Dream How is a dream born? Dreams come in different ways to different people, but Leneen says her dream came as an idea that “popped into” her head way back in 2005. She wrote out her first Peacebe story, but then shelved the idea for FIVE years. She knew her inspiration was to teach kids about character through her writing, so she persevered until her idea became an 8-book series that teaches that “it’s cool to be a kid with character and values.” TWEET: “I want to teach kids that it’s cool to have #character.” #LeneenFaith Taking the Next Step Once you have grabbed hold of your dream, what do you DO with it? Leneen knew it would take action on her part to see the growth of her dream. She took a year off from teaching to knock on doors and talk to school principals about getting her series into schools. Her persistence paid off, as the series is now used in 20 schools! The dream doesn’t stop there, as Leneen admits she sometimes let fear get in the way of growth. The most important step is to STICK WITH IT! She now plans another year of hiatus from teaching to market the series to more schools and more avenues. She is going after it ALL! TWEET: “This time around, I’m going to do it a little bit better.” #LeneenFaith Chasing the Dream WITH your Family Who can you rely on for support in chasing your dream? Leneen turns to her family, especially her brother David, who partners with her in illustrating her books. Being raised by a single mom, Leneen and her five siblings were taught the value of a good attitude, hard work, and waiting. Leneen says there is no one else she would want to “do this” with besides her family. TWEET: “There’s no substitute for a good attitude and hard work.” #LeneenFaith Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“You have to realize that your dream is bigger than you. It will take pressure off you and give you a bigger purpose. Putting pressure on yourself keeps you from being creative.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:35] Leneen’s busy life and how she finds a single focus [3:51] The lifelong dream to be a teacher [4:33] Leneen’s children’s brand and how it came to be [7:23] Inspiration for the series from being a mom and teacher [8:25] The beginning of many more ideas for the series [9:29] How the series found its way into 20 schools [10:55] The focus on a year of marketing [12:50] Chasing your dream with family [15:15] Topics covered in the first series [17:15] Feedback from parents, teachers, and students [19:15] Figuring out the publication process [21:55] The cartoon dream and MORE! What an amazing Masters tournament! I’ve been a Sergio fan since the scissor kick at Medinah. He’s only a few years older than me and I’ve always related to him with my game. We both have tons of lag coming into the ball which means timing is hugely important, and a fiery personality can lead to some very steep emotional, and statistical, highs and lows in a round. When Sergio had the three shot lead on five everything seemed to be falling into place perfectly. But as Justin Rose made his push followed by Sergio’s stumble at the turn everyone started talking about if he could “hold on”. From what I had just watched during those first three holes of the back nine he absolutely could hold on.One of my favorite quotes is “don’t follow a bad shot with a dumb one”, from Craig Jones of Face First Golf. That’s exactly what Sergio had done in the past but he avoided today. He was grinding out pars and not giving up while making bogeys. He was smart, took his medicine (unplayable lie) on 13, and showed world class skill to save a par. RIght then and there, you could feel the momentum switch. This happens all the time in golf. You just need one good shot, heck, sometimes just one good bounce and it’s like a switch goes off inside you where you know that from now on you WILL hit every shot flush and confidently. Sergio goes on to keep his cool, even when the lead slipped away. He knew his game, he knew his plan, and he stuck with it. He didn’t let what was happening around him influence it at all. That’s the biggest lesson we can learn from Sergio. Make you plan and STICK WITH IT! Too many times amateurs get one bad bounce, make one wrong decision, or take one bad swing and decide to scrap the entire plan for the round. They never stop to think that golf is a game of averages and there’s a pretty decent chance that if they continue down the path they laid out ahead of time the good bounce, good swing, and great decision will come. What would happen if every time you felt a bump in the road you pulled into an auto shop and had them check our your car? You wouldn’t get anywhere! Trust your plan, you made it for a reason. The other thing that we can learn is from the low amateur, Stewart Hagestad, and his post tournament interview with Jim Nantz. When asked about how he did it, he said played within himself and made very committed golf swings. He stuck to his game plan and played great that week. The other thing he said that I loved was that “Bogey’s won’t kill you, but doubles will.” These are all important keys to solid golf, especially for higher handicapped players. Play within yourself means quit fantasizing about that one time you hit an 8 iron 184 yards. It was probably down wind off a cliff, that’s not your normal game. Play your averages and when in doubt, take extra club, because you swing will rarely be perfect. When Stewart talked about making committed golf swings, he means picking a shot that you’re going to hit and sticking to that plan throughout the swing. Essentially the micromanager version of what Sergio taught us. This can be harder to do than you would think, but with the right kind of practice you can make it a part of your game. For my money the Think Box, Play Box drill is best way to put this into action with your game. If you’re having a hard time with that, try the seven second drill from Dave Heinen. It will take away any time that you have to waffle over the ball!
Join us today for Women Lead Radio as Michelle Bergquist, your host of Women Who Lead, interviews Monetta Plassmeyer, Inventor & President of Mettano Design. Monetta chats with Michelle Bergquist about her entrepreneurial journey. Monetta created a product based on her personal need. Hear the story behind the name of the Stick With It® palette. Mettano Design and Stick With It Palette is a Veteran-owned business! Monetta Plassmeyer traveled frequently and was frustrated with the disorganization and clutter of her cosmetics. She searched for a solution and found several customizable magnetic palettes on the market that only accommodated metal makeup pans–but not everything she carried was metal. She had wood-handled brushes, plastic containers, stainless steel implements, and tin makeup pans. Monetta knew there had to be a better way and set out to create a solution, and the result was Stick With It ®. As the CEO and Co-Founder of Connected Women of Influence, Michelle Bergquist is a passionate advocate for women in business. At Connected Women of Influence, we believe that more women need to lead in business and everything we do is center-focused on designing platforms, programs, connections and collaborative opportunities for b2b women to prosper, succeed and lead the way in business today!
